Tragedy struck a gaming bar in Jacksonville during a Madden tournament this weekend, after a shooter killed two people and injured as many as 11 more, according to reports. Officially sanctioned by EA Sports, this has raised serious questions about the security measures in place to protect its attendees.

The Madden NFL 19 tournament was hosted across the weekend in Jacksonville’s Good Luck Have Fun (GLHF) Game Bar, with many of the participants livestreaming the event. The gunman was seen entering the premises around 1:30 pm EDT with at least one handgun equipped with a red laser sight. Three were found dead upon a SWAT team sweep, including the suspected perpetrator, alongside as many as 11 injured.

Two were shot while fleeing, but are believed to have sustained non-life-threatening wounds. Among the injured is complexity Gaming’s professional player Drini Gjoka, who was enjoying an impressive win streak before the tournament was attacked. In what has been the “worst day” of his life, Gjoka told Twitter how lucky he was that it was just his thumb that was shot.

The lead suspect has been identified by police and is believed to have been a regular Madden tournament attendee, even going as far as to win the Madden 17 Bills Championship two years ago. Reports of his motive remain unconfirmed, however it is believed he was either eliminated or disqualified earlier in the day. He was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing the total death count up to three.

The NFL said that it was “shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific tragedy” while EA stated how horrible the situation was, ensuring its “deepest sympathies go out to all involved.” Director of esports programmes for Twitch, Christian Tamas said that “unfortunately, this was a matter of when not if. Esport event security, in general, has been extremely poor over the years, we should've stepped it up long ago.”

KitGuru Says: It’s less about allocating more manpower to security and more about streamlining it to include pat-downs and measures that will prevent undetected firearms from entering the building. Our thoughts go out to all of the victims in this situation and we hope that this leads to better practices that will protect more people in the future.

Over the years, we have come to expect annual sports game releases. We see titles like Madden and FIFA pushed out on a yearly basis and sell millions of copies each time. However, things might not always stay that way, as EA's CEO, Andrew Wilson envisions a time where these games can switch to a ‘live service' model instead.

During an interview with Bloomberg this week, Wilson spoke briefly about a future that doesn't involve annual releases for games like FIFA or Madden. Instead, these games could switch to a digital ‘live service' or subscription model, with incremental updates throughout the year.

“There’s a world where it gets easier and easier to move that code around — where we may not have to do an annual release. We can really think about those games as a 365-day, live service”.

EA has been exploring the subscription model for some time now. It kicked off with EA Access, a subscription service that grants users access to a library of ‘vault' games, with newer titles added between 6 and 9 months after release. There are some challenges that EA needs to overcome first though:

“When we design a game that lives in a true streaming world, we have to think about screen size and session time. How does a Madden game that exists in the cloud manifest on your mobile phone, one minute at a time? How does that manifest on your 60-inch TV, an hour at a time.”

The video game industry is shifting more towards digital sales, not just in terms of the games themselves, but major publishers have also begun seeing an increase in post-launch content sales. Ubisoft recently saw DLC and microtransaction revenue surpass digital game sales for the first time. Take-Two is moving to include microtransactions in all future games following the success of GTA Online. It seems that EA is also moving towards a future like this, where selling a game is just the first step, with post-launch content and subscriptions keeping players monetarily invested for longer periods of time.

KitGuru Says: When it comes to sports games, a live service model seems to make the most sense, but it won't make sense for every genre, or every game. The challenge will be in figuring out where it works. We've seen that many gamers aren't keen when it comes to single-player games like Shadow or War, and there has been plenty of controversy surrounding loot crates in Battlefront II. Over time, publishers will figure it out, but for now, it looks like we can expect to see some continued experimentation.

“The Present and Future of Gaming for Race and Gender”

Kotaku’s personal appeal article echoes many of my own fears about the present and future of gaming in regard to race and gender. Although the proud father who authored the article is genuinely excited for his young daughter to experience video games, he is nonetheless concerned about absence of positive Black protagonists and the “exoticized and fetishized” existence of female gamers.
