The Watch Dogs franchise is one of Ubisoft’s most frustraiting, not due to its quality, but simply due to the fact that it’s a series with a great deal of potential being hampered by typical Ubisoft gimmicks. It is therefore interesting to see that a manga based in the world of Watch Dogs is now available.

As reported by MangaMoguraRE, a new manga is being released called Watch Dogs Tokyo. Drawn by artist Kamo Syuhei (Gangsta: Cursed) & written by Shirato Seiichi, the manga is releasing its first chapter later today.

Currently, no official English version has been announced, however fan translations are commonplace in the manga community, and so it won’t be too long before Watch Dogs Tokyo is readable in multiple different languages.

According to MangaMoguraRE, Watch Dogs Tokyo will be about “a special new infrastructure system from a company called Bloom Japan used by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to change people's lives. However this new system does in fact also harbor a great darkness.”

This isn’t the first time a manga has been released based on a Ubisoft IP. Unfortunately, all previous releases were limited in their length. With no new Watch Dogs game announced, it will be interesting to see if this story ties into an upcoming sequel, or if the team is simply experimenting with taking advantage of different mediums.

Completed manga comic series fare far better with piracy than those series which are ongoing, according to a new study. Research suggests that manga readers will more readily pirate content if a series is still ongoing, but if it's completed, they might not know it existed without a pirated version.

The relationship that piracy of all kinds has with official content is one that's been debated for years. While copyright holders and lobby groups are steadfast in their opinion that it harms sales, that's not always what the research says. With regards to manga it seems, they are sometimes correct, but it's more to do with whether the series is finished or not.

This latest research comes out of the Faculty of Economics at Keio University, headed by professor Tatsuo Tanaka and it showed that while manga is pirated on a large scale, it's not quite as negative as many publishers would have you believe. Using data acquired following a big anti-piracy crack down, the report suggests that completed series were negatively impacted by the move.

“Since completed comics series have already ended, and publishers no longer do any promotion for them, consumers almost forget completed comics,” Tanaka said (via TorrentFreak). “We can interpret that piracy reminds consumers of past comics and stimulates sales.”

Attack on Titan is a regularly pirated ongoing manga series.

He did however see a correlation between unfinished manga series and piracy, in that availability for free online, did seem to decrease sales of those particular comics.

With that in mind, Tanaka proposes a new method of tackling manga piracy. In an ideal world, ongoing series would be taken down from pirate sites, but completed series would remain, as they act as free promotional material for the series, even if they offer the complete collection for nothing.

“In this case, deleting piracy files of ongoing comics only is the first best strategy for publishers regardless of whether the total effect is positive or negative, because the availability of piracy files of completed comics is beneficial to both publishers and consumers,” he adds.

KitGuru Says: Although KitGuru doesn't condone piracy in any guise, it's easy to understand how it can act as a marketing tool. If you can try something out for free and can easily access the full, retail version at an affordable rate, that's a pretty good promotional system.

Sword Art Online is soon going to be a virtual, reality if IBM has anything to do with it. The longtime technology firm announced that it is sponsoring the development of a VR MMO based around the manga/anime series known as Sword Art Online: The Beginning. It's listed with a 2016 debut date, though details remain very thin on the ground right now.

Welcome to Sword Art. Good luck leaving.

Announced in an entirely conceptual trailer, the game is shown to be in development, with some of the more iconic scenes from the Sword Art universe appearing on dev stations and within design tools. At the end we're shown a person putting on a generic looking VR headset before stepping into an unknown virtual world.

Presumably the Sword Art one. Presumably too, the game is further along in development than we might think, as the IBM website is taking applications over the next couple of weeks for a prototype alpha test set to take place towards the end of March in Tokyo. There are 208 slots open for people to join the trial.

Unfortunately the fact that the prototype test will take place in Tokyo, means it is only open to residents of Japan. You also need to be at least 18 years old and be happy with being photographed and videod during the demo.

When all applications have been accepted by by 4th March, the chosen couple of hundred will be chosen from the applicable by lottery.

KitGuru Says: Heading to a bespoke location for a prototype Sword Art Online? I'm not saying IBM is going to stop people from leaving, but I wonder what it has planned?

Marvel crossovers are some of the most fun comics to read, if for no other reason that you sometimes have to pinch yourself to realise someone actually made a mashup between Marvel, Zombies and the Evil Dead. The next one is set to be equally bizarre as it's with Shingeki No Kyojin, known in the Western world as Attack on Titan.

The reveal that this was going to be a real thing comes from Senior VP of creative & creator development at Marvel comics, C.B. Cebulski. “I loved “Marvel Team-Up” and “What If?” as a kid. I would spend hours dreaming up my own crossovers and alternate reality stories,” he began on Twitter. Suggesting initially just a musing by a fan of the genre.

“As I got more into manga, I always imagined how cool it would be for the Marvel characters to cross into the pages of manga worlds,” he said, before dropping the big bomb of a reveal:

“If you ever wondered, “What if the titans from Hajime Isayama's “Attack on Titan” attacked the Marvel universe?”, you'll find out soon!!”

Understandably, this prompted many people to question if he was kidding. Marvel might feature large enemies for its heroes to battle and wanton destruction is certainly a common theme in both universes, but the comparatively relentless Manga is known for regularly slaying characters that have been given plenty of panel time, often in a brutal fashion. Comics while often dark, rarely stray into such depressing themes.

Clearly though Cebulski wasn't playing, as he posted the above image shortly after, announcing that “this was not a joke,” and that the Marvel universe and the Attack on Titan one would be crossing over in just two weeks time. In Japan, though whether that means it's set in Japan, or that the crossover comic will be available there first, wasn't clear.

KitGuru Says: Either way we don't have long to wait to find out. Since this is just a fun little non-canon spin-off, it should be interesting to see what it's all about. What do you guys think will happen in it?
