Mario Kart Tour initially launched in September 2019 to a great deal of buzz surrounding it. Bringing the iconic series to smartphones could have allowed for everyone to experience the best of Mario Kart. Unfortunately the game launched with a number of issues such as its control scheme, gacha mechanics, and a lack of true multiplayer. Now Nintendo is finally addressing one of these issues as the game’s multiplayer update is set to go live on the 8th of March.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the Mario Kart Tour page announced that you can now “Race against players worldwide to raise your grade under rules that change daily in Standard Races and Gold Races. When racing friends or others nearby, Rooms let you pick speed, item slot number, and more. Play your way when #MarioKartTour multiplayer launches Mar. 8, 8 PM PT! [4am 9th of March UK time].

Back in December, Mario Kart Tour hosted a multiplayer beta period, though it was only accessible to those who were subscribed to the £5/month Gold Pass. A second beta occurred near the end of January which was open to all. Real-time multiplayer is now finally officially arriving to the game, and will allow you to play with up to seven players both locally and online.

Though controls for the game are still much more simplified when compared to its console counterpart, it’s good nonetheless to see one of the game’s most requested features finally come to fruition. Mario Kart Tour was the most downloaded game on iOS in 2019, so it’ll be interesting to see how the launch of the multiplayer update will affect the game’s user base.

Apple recently hosted an event honouring the best games and apps of 2019. The company has since revealed which games were the most downloaded of the year. Nintendo’s ‘Mario Kart Tour’ took the top spot, despite only releasing in September. Other big winners include Minecraft and Stardew Valley.

Mario Kart Tour topped the charts for the most downloaded free iPhone game of the year. The game released at the end of September, to relatively mixed and negative reviews. It is therefore surprising to see that the title managed to become the most downloaded game of the year on iPhone in just over 2 months. That being said, the title did attain over 123 million downloads in its first month, so perhaps this achievement isn’t so surprising.

The most downloaded paid game on both iPhone and iPad was Minecraft. The title is consistently the most downloaded premium (paid) game of the month on the App Store, and is currently the best selling premium video game of all time, with over 180 million copies sold. The most downloaded free game on the iPad meanwhile was Roblox.

Other notable games on the list includes Stardew Valley. The indie farming title achieved 8th and 6th place on the most downloaded paid games for iPhone and iPad respectively. Call of Duty Mobile was the 4th most downloaded free game of 2019 on the iPhone. The first-person shooter was downloaded over 56.7 million times on Apple’s App store in its first week alone.

Lastly, Fortnite managed to stay in the charts. The battle royale game was the 8th and 6th most downloaded free game for iPhone and iPad respectively. The complete list of the most downloaded free and paid games on the iOS App Store can be found here.

Originally meant to launch in February, Nintendo delayed Mario Kart Tour to better improve quality and content. The company is now gearing up to test the game, as Android owners in North America and Japan receive a closed beta trial starting May 22nd.

Nintendo is currently accepting applications from now until May 7th on the official website. From May 22nd until June 4th, developers will be weeding out bugs and ensuring that Mario Kart Tour meets the same polish as Nintendo's usual triple-A titles. The company does warn that these dates might change without notice, so participants should keep up to date on the latest news once enrolled.

It looks as though there a number of requirements to meet before being selected. Along with current country restrictions, the company is only looking for people that have a Nintendo Account registered with a Gmail email address specifically. Those that truly wish to take part won’t miss out on anything by creating a new Nintendo Account though, as saved data from the beta test won’t transfer to the main game.

Only Android 4.4 or later devices will be eligible aside from current Android Q beta testers, with at least 1.5GB of RAM. Nintendo does state that even if the device satisfies hardware requirements, there might be other restrictions imposed by the settings. Mario Kart Tour is a smartphone-only title and won’t initially be available on tablets.

Participants will be required to sign an online non-disclosure agreement (NDA), and therefore prohibited from putting any videos or screenshots online. It might be a little while longer before we can see the game here in Europe.

KitGuru Says: Mobile games aren’t usually my thing, but Mario Kart Tour has me interested. While I don’t expect the same highs that I got from playing Double Dash or 64, I’m at least hoping it’s fun on-the-go.

Say what you want about Nintendo’s newfound focus on mobile gaming, it looks as though the company is treading lightly in the divisive market. Although Mario Kart Tour was meant to hit smartphones at the end of March, the game has reportedly been delayed and won’t be arriving until the summer.

Nintendo revealed the news during its quarterly earnings report alongside a record 9.41 million Switch consoles shipped between October and December. This is the second delay this year, following the announcement that Metroid Prime 4 had restarted development with Retro Studios.

According to The Verge, Nintendo stated that the delay of Mario Kart Tour was necessary “in order to improve quality of the application and expand the content offerings after launch.” This upholds the same standard that Nintendo carries across its flagship games, ensuring a stable release. It’s understandable that the game would take a little longer, given that Nintendo has a limited experience in the mobile market.

Not much is known about Mario Kart Tour, although it’s presumed that the game will take after Nintendo’s other mobile efforts with the inclusion of in-app microtransactions. The company is continuously perfecting this games-as-a-service model in order to keep launching around 2-3 mobile games per year.

KitGuru Says: Whether you’re in favour of mobile games or against them, it’s certainly respectable that Nintendo always endeavours to release a complete, optimised game regardless of platform. I doubt that Mario Kart Tour will give me the same whimsical feeling Mario Kart Double Dash once gave me, but I’m certainly willing to give it a go. What was your favourite Mario Kart game?

Nintendo has been experimenting with mobile games for a couple of years now, with smartphone games covering Super Mario, Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing. Now Nintendo has announced that Mario Kart Tour will be its next big mobile gaming project.

Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe recently surpassed the seven million sales mark on the Nintendo Switch. Now, Nintendo will be bringing the series to iOS and Android. Mario Kart Tour will be launching before the end of the current fiscal year, so any time between now and the end of March 2019.

Nintendo's announcement was left very vague. We don't know what changes Nintendo will make to the Mario Kart formula to make it more friendly for touch screens, nor do we know if this will be another paid or free to play game, as so far Nintendo has experimented with both.

We do know that Mario Kart Tour is another step in Nintendo's plan to make Super Mario a huge multi-media franchise. Nintendo's famous plumber had a big year in 2017 with Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Odyssey. We'll be getting Mario Kart Tour some time over the next year and finally, Nintendo has also greenlit a Super Mario movie, partnering with production studio ‘Illumination' with Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri on board as producers.

KitGuru Says: We all know how the last Super Mario movie turned out, so hopefully this one will be better. Aside from that, it will be interesting to see how Nintendo re-works Mario Kart for touch screens. What do you guys think of Nintendo's current Mario plans?
