Matrox has announced today that it will collaborate with Nvidia to develop a new embedded GPU, purpose-built for high-density video walls. According to Matrox, the new embedded graphics will leverage Nvidia Quadro architecture to produce the best in class graphics cards for next-generation video walls.

This new partnership between Matrox and Nvidia will bring a new multi-display graphics card that will accelerate graphics-intensive video walls in commercial and 24/7 critical environments. It will be designed and built by Matrox using an Nvidia Quadro embedded GPU, Matrox will work alongside Nvidia to bring to market a new standard for high-density video walls.

“Matrox is thrilled to work alongside Nvidia,” said David Chiappini, executive vice president of research and development at Matrox. “This collaboration is yet another example of our commitment to expanding our video wall portfolio while customers continue to benefit from our graphics expertise.”

The new video wall graphics card will be a single slot design based on Nvidia Quadro embedded GPUs and will be capable of powering up to four 4k resolution displays per card. Installers and system integrators will be able to combine multiple cards in a single system that will have the power to drive up to 16 displays at once.

The Quadro based GPU will also include HDCP  support for the playback of protected content and a comprehensive set of advanced tools will be available to manage and customise the multi-display video wall setups via the Matrox PowerDesk desktop management software.

Matrox Graphics this week announced that going forward it will use AMD Radeon graphics processing units as well as their drivers for its forthcoming multi-display graphics cards. The move will help to make Matrox Graphics’ graphics cards more competitive on the market. The company hopes that its proprietary software will differentiate it from solutions by AMD or Nvidia. Corp.

Matrox Graphics is a rather legendary name in the world of graphics boards. The company has been building graphics adapters since 1978 and even used to develop leading-edge graphics processors in the 1990s and early 2000s. Unfortunately, Matrox ceased to develop high-end consumer-oriented graphics solutions in 2003-2004 after the launch of the Parhelia-512 graphics processing unit in 2002. While the company released several more graphics processors in 2005 – 2008 to add PCI Express and Windows Vista Aero acceleration technologies, they could not compete against solutions from ATI/AMD and Nvidia on the consumer market.

The new generation of Matrox graphics solutions will be based on AMD’s code-named Cape Verde graphics processing unit (GCN 1.0 architecture, 640 stream processors, 40 texture units, 16 raster operating units, 128-bit memory bus) that powers AMD Radeon R7 250X/AMD Radeon 7700-series graphics cards. Thanks to support for DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.4, OpenCL 1.2 and other new technologies, Matrox’s graphics adapters will finally be able to offer modern features and capabilities already provided by other graphics solutions.

Matrox claims that its soon-to-be-launched product line will enable unique features that solve real-world problems in enterprise, industrial, pro A/V, digital signage, security, command and control, and other professional applications. The solutions will be supported by Matrox PowerDesk desktop management software with critical productivity-enhancing features, which will be integrated to work with AMD’s professional display drivers.

“The AMD graphics core next (GCN) GPU we selected for our new product line allows Matrox to continue designing and manufacturing professional, reliable video cards. Matrox add-in boards strike the perfect balance between video output density, performance and power consumption,” said David Chiappini, vice president of research and development, Matrox Graphics. “Our enterprise and industrial customers will continue to benefit from Matrox multi-display board designs, easy-to-use PowerDesk software, direct customer support and long product life cycles.”

KitGuru Says: Matrox Graphics has made a very logical decision to move to AMD graphics processors. Customers of Matrox have probably demanded new features for years, but Matrox just could not provide them. As a result, the company’s market share has dropped to extremely low levels by now.

Although Advanced Micro Devices has been adding free games to its desktop add-on graphics cards for some time now, its market share continues to significantly trail that of Nvidia. According to recently released data from Jon Peddie Research, when it comes to discrete desktop graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia continues to outsell AMD by millions of units and has been doing so for years now.

Jon Peddie Research claims that the total available market of desktop add-in-boards (AIBs) in Q4 2013 was around 15 million units, which was only 3 per cent higher compared to the previous quarter. Moreover, the attach rate of AIBs to desktop PCs has dropped from a high of 63 per cent in Q1 2008 to 42.8 per cent in Q4 2013 (which was even lower than 43.4 per cent in Q3 2013). A good news for the market is that sales of dual-GPU graphics cards as well as adoption of multi-GPU configurations increased in the Q4 2013, reports JPR.

Shipments of AMD Radeon graphics cards for desktop decreased 3 per cent in Q4 2013 compared to the previous quarter, according to JPR. By contrast, Nvidia’s quarter-to-quarter desktop GPU unit shipments increased 3.6 per cent. Nvidia continued to hold a dominant market share position at nearly 65 per cent. By contrast, AMD shipped 35 per cent of discrete desktop graphics processors.

While the market of desktop discrete graphics cards is virtually controlled by AMD and Nvidia, companies like Matrox Graphics and S3 Graphics continue to ship standalone GPUs, albeit, in very small quantities, according to findings of JPR. In total, there are around 51 suppliers of add-in graphics cards worldwide.

KitGuru Says: The reasons why AMD cannot capture a significant chunk of the market away from Nvidia is completely unclear. When Nvidia GeForce could offer higher performance across the board, then the AMD Radeon was naturally less popular. But while now there is performance parity between competing solutions, higher popularity of the GeForce cannot be easily explained.
