Nvidia Corp. is gearing up to introduce its GeForce GTX 990M, an all-new graphics processing unit for laptops. Despite expectations, the company will continue to use its GM204 chip for its new adapter designed for gaming notebooks.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 990M graphics processing unit for mobile computers will use fully-fledged GM204 processor with 2048 stream processors, 128 texture units, 64 raster operations pipelines and 256-bit memory interface. The GPU operates at 1190MHz, according to ComputerBase, which tried out Asustek’s new ROG GX700 laptop powered by the new GPU.

nvidia_geforce_gpu_maxwell_gm104_650

The new GeForce GTX 990M should demonstrate performance on par with desktop GeForce GTX 980, which means that the new graphics adapter will be the highest-performing graphics solution for mobile computers. Thermal design power of the fully-fledged GM204 is pretty high, hence, the GeForce GTX 990M will be used only for ultra-high-end laptops.

Previously it was expected that Nvidia will use a version of its GM200 graphics chip for its GeForce GTX 990M adapter. However, even at low clock-rate, the GM200 may be too hot and power-hungry for laptops.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

The key feature of the Asus ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Ti graphics adapter is its hybrid air-liquid cooling solution. Two high-quality fans along with advanced radiator and DirectXU H2O vapor-chamber should be enough to cool-down the graphics adapter, but enthusiasts with custom-built liquid cooling solutions will be able to plug the card to their pump and enjoy the benefits of liquid cooling. According to Asustek Computer, the cooling system of the ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Ti guarantees up to 5°C lower GPU temperature than Nvidia’s reference cooler out-of-box and up to 30°C lower GPU temperature when connected to a liquid cooling system.

asus_poseidon_geforce_gtx_980_ti_4

Clock-rates of the Asus ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Ti graphics adapter – 1203MHz/1228MHz (base/boost) for GPU and 7GHz for 6GB of GDDR5 memory – are lower compared to frequencies offered by the Asus Strix GTX 980 Ti. Moreover, the latter also has more advanced VRM and pre-overclocked memory. Asus positions its Republic of Gamers products above Strix lineup but the ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Ti is slower than the Strix GTX 980 Ti.

asus_poseidon_geforce_gtx_980_ti

Peak compute performance of the ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Ti is around 6.77TFLOPS, or around 10 per cent higher compared to that of the GeForce GTX Titan X, which boasts with 6.144TFLOPS of FP32 processing power.

The Asus ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Ti is available now worldwide.

Asustek Computer is also working on its Asus ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti, which will be the company’s highest-performing single-chip graphics card based on an Nvidia GeForce graphics chip.

Nvidia Corp. is mulling to reconsider prices of select high-end graphics cards in order to further strengthen its positions in the market advanced graphics solutions. If the company proceeds with the plan, it will get considerably harder for Advanced Micro Devices to regain market share it lost to Nvidia in 2014.

AMD’s recently introduced Radeon R9 300-series graphics cards are based on “Hawaii” and “Tonga” graphics processing units that have been available for several quarters and demand for such adapters is not strong in the channel, two sources with knowledge of the matter have revealed. AMD’s new flagship Radeon R9 Fury X graphics board is powered by a brand-new “Fiji” GPU and offers higher performance than its predecessors.

Even though Nvidia has a substantial competitive advantage over its rival even after the latter introduced its new products, the company is considering ways how to improve sales its high-end graphics cards.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_art

One of the ways to boost sales of GeForce products is to reconsider pricing of GeForce GTX 980 Ti and possibly GeForce GTX 970/980. Prices of GeForce GTX 980 Ti and GeForce GTX 980 are very competitive in the U.S., but in Europe and the U.K. they are pretty high. In a bid to make its GeForce GTX 980 Ti more popular, Nvidia may decrease its prices, at least in some countries, according to a market rumour.

If Nvidia changes prices of its GeForce GTX 980 Ti and GeForce GTX 980, AMD will have to reconsider prices of its Radeon R9 Fury X as well as Radeon R9 390X in a bid to stay competitive.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

Nvidia Corp.’s latest ultra-high-end graphics cards offer unbeatable performance and do not really have direct rivals. Unfortunately, when it comes to prices, not everything looks truly good, especially in Europe. Fortunately, stores like Overclockers UK and their partners this week offer substantial discounts on Nvidia’s flagship product.

The suggested retail price of the Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card is £899 in the U.K. Many graphics boards cost more because they come with custom cooling systems and are factory-overclocked, some adapters cost a little less to attract attention. For a limited time only, OcUK, Palit and Zotac will offer their GeForce GTX Titan X graphics cards for £799.

All flagship Titan X graphics boards are made by a contract manufacturer under Nvidia’s supervision. The company then sells add-in-boards to its partners, which is why all GeForce GTX Titan X graphics adapters look similar. As a result it does not really matter what brand name does a Titan X carry: they are all equally good from quality point of view.

gdc-2015-nvidia-unveils-its-titan-x-gpu_z2g2.1920

The Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X is based on the GM200 graphics processing unit with 3072 stream processors, 192 texture mapping units, 96 raster operations pipelines and 384-bit bus. All Titan X graphics cards are equipped with 12GB of GDDR5 memory operating at 7GHz.

Keeping in mind that initial demand for Nvidia’s new flagship is over, there is GeForce GTX 980 Ti that offers similar performance and there is AMD’s Radeon Fury incoming, it is about time for resellers to start reconsidering premium prices of the GeForce GTX Titan X.

Asustek Computer is working on a new Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti-based graphics card that promises to offer no-compromise performance. The new adapter is based on Asus’ own design and will feature increased clock-rates and an advanced cooling system. The board is demonstrated at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan.

The Asus Strix GTX 980 Ti will utilize a highly-custom printed circuit board developed by Asustek Computer in-house that will feature enhanced multi-phase voltage regulation module for the GPU and memory designed to ensure maximum stability and overclockability. Default clock-rates of the graphics card will likely be increased by 10 – 15 per cent compared to Nvidia’s recommended frequencies.

The Strix GeForce GTX 980 Ti will also use all-new DirectCU III cooling system with three 10cm fans and 10mm copper heat-pipes to ensure low temperatures and headroom for further overclocking. The fans automatically shut down when the GPU is under light load.

asus_strix_geforce_gtx_980_ti

Like the rest GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics adapters, the Asus Strix GTX 980 Ti will carry Nvidia’s GM200-310 graphics processing unit with 2816 stream processors, 176 texture units, 96 raster operations pipelines and 384-bit memory interface. The board will be equipped with 6GB of GDDR5 memory.

Asustek’s Strix-series products are designed for gamers and deliver considerably higher performance compared to devices based on reference designs. However, Strix products are not Asus’ top-of-the-range offerings. It is possible that eventually Asus will release GeForce GTX 980 Ti-based graphics adapter that will be a part of the ROG Matrix Platinum family, which is designed to provide absolutely best levels of performance and overclockability. Asus GTX 980 Ti ROG Matrix Platinum could feature 14-phase VRM, various tweaks for extreme overclocking and other advantages.

The Asus Strix GTX 980 Ti will likely hit the market in late July or early August. Pricing is unknown, but naturally it will be higher than default $649/£550/€749. The hypothetical Asus GTX 980 Ti ROG Matrix Platinum could be launched this fall.

In an unexpected move, Nvidia Corp. reconsidered recommended pricing of its graphics cards following the introduction of its GeForce GTX 980 Ti early on Monday. Unfortunately, the GeForce GTX 980 Ti will be considerably more expensive in Europe than in the U.S.

Nvidia will sell GeForce GTX 980 Ti for $649 in the U.S., not $799 as reported last week citing an online store. In addition, the company will lower the price of the GeForce GTX 980 to $499 from $549. The cost of the GeForce GTX 970 will remain at $329, whereas the GeForce GTX 960 will retain its recommended retail price at $199.

While the MSRP of both GeForce GTX 980 Ti and GeForce GTX 980 seems to be very competitive in the U.S., the same cannot be said about the prices in Europe. The official manufacturer’s suggested retail price of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980 Ti for the U.K. is £549 including value added tax (VAT), which is $752. The MSRP of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti for Eurozone is €739 – €749 ($824 – $835), depending on the country, which is considerably higher compared to the price in the U.S.

The reason why Nvidia decided to set the price of its new GeForce GTX 980 Ti so high in Europe is completely unclear. The price of Nvidia’s single-chip flagship – GeForce GTX Titan X – has been declining and gamers with unlimited budgets will prefer to get the top-of-the-range solution even though it is more expensive.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti is based on the GM200 graphics processing unit with 2816 stream processors, 176 texture mapping units, 96 raster operations pipelines and 384-bit memory bus. The new graphics cards carry 6GB of GDDR5 memory operating at 7GHz.

KitGuru Says: Nvidia’s prices for Europe continue to disappoint. First, Nvidia made its GeForce GTX Titan X considerably more expensive in the European Union compared to the U.S. This time the price of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti in some European countries is nearly $200 higher compared to the MSRP of the product in the United States.

An online store from the U.S. has started to take pre-orders on Nvidia Corp.’s upcoming GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics adapters, which are expected to be introduced next week. If Nvidia does not change the price of the upcoming graphics card at the last minute, then the GeForce GTX 980 Ti boards will cost around $800 per unit.

Bottom Line Telecommunications, a U.S.-based online store that is known for listing unreleased hardware, recently started to take orders on EVGA’s lineup of GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics cards. The add-in boards are equipped with 6GB of memory and similar outputs (one DVI, one HDMI, three DisplayPorts), which may indicate that they are all based on the reference design, but feature different clock-rates and cooling systems.

EVGA’s GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics cards cost from $799 to $827, depending on frequencies and coolers. An independent source with knowledge of Nvidia plans confirmed to KitGuru that Nvidia’s suggested retail price of the reference GeForce GTX 980 Ti is $799. The official SRPs for the U.K. and mainland Europe are unknown, but expect something like £550 and €750 – €799.

While everything about the GeForce GTX 980 Ti seems to be finalized and set, there could be major last minute changes incoming. According to South Korea-based HWBattle web-site, Nvidia may set the price of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti to $649 and cut the price of the GeForce GTX 980, which currently retails for $549. This information has not been confirmed by any source so far, but if it is true, this could be a serious deal breaker, especially considering the fact that the adapter is set to be bundled with Witcher 3 and Batman Arkham Knight, notes WccfTech.

Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card is based on the GM200-310 graphics processing unit with 2816 stream processors, 176 texture mapping units, 96 raster operations pipelines and 384-bit memory bus, according to various unofficial sources. Graphics cards makers will be allowed to pre-overclock GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics adapters and even design their own printed circuit boards for them.

KitGuru Says: Given the fact that performance of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980 Ti will be very close to that of the flagship GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card, it is very unlikely that Nvidia will sell this card for $649. Perhaps, Nvidia has a plan in place to cut the price of its GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 980 Ti graphics adapters if they are challenged by AMD’s forthcoming “Fiji XT” solution. However, the latter is not expected to hit the market next week, hence, at least initially Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980 Ti boards will cost $799/£550/€799.

As the launch of Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card is approaching, more details about the upcoming add-in-board get revealed. Two web-sites have published specifications of the new enthusiast-class graphics solution from Nvidia as well as the first photos of the reference GeForce GTX 980 Ti adapter. As expected, the novelty will be very similar to the flagship GeForce GTX Titan X, but will not match it.

Nvidia’s forthcoming GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card will not be powered by the GM200 graphics processing unit with maximum configuration, according to an excerpt from a presentation published by South Korea-based Hardware Battle web-site. The GM200-310 GPU will feature 2816 stream processors and 176 texture mapping units. It is unknown whether the graphics processor has reduced amount of raster operations pipelines and a cut-down memory interface (akin to that of the GeForce GTX 970’s 224-bit + 32-bit memory bus), but the card carries 6GB of GDDR5 memory, according to market rumours.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_980ti_unofficial_2

VideoCardz reports that reference Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card features 1GHz/7GHz clock-rates for GPU/memory, however, actual add-in-board manufacturers will be able to overclock the GPU. In fact, high clock-rates of actual GeForce GTX 980 graphics adapters from Nvidia’s partners will likely compensate for reduced amount of execution units compared to the GeForce GTX Titan X.

The first images of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti prove that the card uses the same PG600 printed circuit board as the GeForce GTX Titan X with some minor tweaks. The graphics card has product ID 699-1G800-0030-800 B2. The upcoming high-end solution from Nvidia will use the same cooling system as many of its predecessors, so the adapter will likely be rather quiet.

It is expected that Nvidia’s partners will be allowed to design their own PCBs and cooling systems for the GeForce GTX 980 Ti. It is possible that at the Computex Taipei trade-show in early June at least some of proprietary GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics cards will be demonstrated.

Pricing of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980 Ti is still unknown.

KitGuru Says: It was completely illogical for Nvidia to use the fully-fledged GM200 for the GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card, which is why it slightly reduced the amount of execution units inside the chip. Considering the die size of the GM200 and its possible yield, it is likely that eventually Nvidia will offer a yet another graphics adapter powered by the chip. There are rumours about the GeForce GTX 980 Metal, but its possible specifications are yet to be discovered.

Nvidia Corp. may announce its GeForce GTX 980 Ti at the Computex Taipei 2015 trade-show early next month, a rumour claims. It is also expected that sales of the new graphics card will start right after the announcement. Unfortunately, specifications of the product are still unknown.

PC Games Hardware reports that Nvidia decided to postpone the launch of its new high-performance graphics card from May to early June. The reasons for the delay are unclear, but Nvidia is in a very comfortable position at the moment because its arch-rival AMD does not have a direct rival for the GeForce GTX Titan X. While AMD’s partners sell dual-chip Radeon R9 295X2 solution – which is the world’s fastest graphics card – many enthusiasts prefer single-GPU graphics adapters.

The upcoming GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card is expected to carry GM200-310 graphics processing unit. It is unclear whether the GM200-310 has the same configuration as the GM200-400, which powers Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X. The Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X graphics adapter features the GM200-400 graphics chip with 3072 stream processors, 192 texture mapping units, 96 raster operations pipelines as well as 384-bit memory interface. The GPU operates at 1000MHz/1075MHz base/boost frequency.

PCGH reports that actual performance and specification of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980 Ti will determine its price. The graphic card will naturally cost more than the original GeForce GTX 980, but will be more affordable compared to the GeForce GTX Titan X.

Nvidia’s partners will be allowed to design their own printed circuit boards and cooling solutions for the GeForce GTX 980 Ti. If Nvidia announces its new graphics adapter at Computex, actual graphics cards will be demonstrated at the trade-show. Unfortunately, it is unclear whether manufacturers of graphics cards will demonstrate their own versions of GeForce GTX 980 Ti.

According to market rumours, Nvidia is also developing yet another GM200-based graphics card, which is called GeForce GTX 980 Metal Edition.

Computex Taipei 2015 starts on the 2nd of June, 2015.

Although it was expected that Nvidia Corp.’s upcoming GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics adapter will be powered by the very same chip as the GeForce GTX Titan X, it now turns out that the new graphics board will be based on a version of the GM200 graphics processor with a different configuration of execution units.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card features the GM200-400 graphics chip with 3072 stream processors, 192 texture mapping units, 96 raster operations pipelines as well as 384-bit memory interface. The chip operates at 1000MHz/1075MHz base/boost clock-rate. By contrast, the upcoming GeForce GTX 980 Ti will use the GM200-310 graphics chip, reports VideoCardz web-site.

NVIDIA_GeForce_GTX_900series_KeyVisual_HD_003

Nvidia marks graphics processing units with dissimilar configurations differently. For example, both GeForce GTX 970 and GeForce GTX 980 are powered by GM204 GPUs, but the number of activated SPs, TMUs and ROPs is different on these two graphics cards. As a result, the GTX 970 chips are marked as the GM204-200, whereas the GTX 980 processors are marked as the GM204-400.

The GM200-310 marking may indicate that the configuration of the graphics processor of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti will not be the same as that of Nvidia’s flagship graphics card. One thing that is clear at the moment is that the GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics board will carry 6GB of GDDR5 memory.

KitGuru Says: It is clearly logical for Nvidia to use a cut-down version of its GM200 for the GeForce GTX 980 Ti. The company has a lot of GM200 chips with defects and it needs to sell them somehow. At the same time, the company's product lineup requires a graphics solution that will be faster than the GeForce GTX 980, but slower than the GeForce GTX Titan X.

Nvidia Corp. has reportedly reconsidered its plans concerning its rumoured add-in cards powered by the GM200 graphics processing unit. The higher-end GeForce GTX 980 Ti is now expected to be released as early as in the middle of May. In addition, the GPU developer is working on something called GeForce GTX 980 Metal.

According to a report from a Chinese web-site, Nvidia has moved the launch window of its GeForce GTX 980 Ti to 16th – 26th of May. The graphics card will be based on the code-named GM200 graphics chip with 3072 stream processors, 192 texture units, 96 raster operations pipelines as well as 384-bit memory interface. The GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics adapter is projected to carry 6GB of GDDR5 memory onboard, which will be its main difference compared to the high-end GeForce GTX Titan X, which features 12GB of memory.

Nvidia needs GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card in order to better compete against upcoming AMD Radeon R9 390-series from its arch-rival. Final specifications of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti are unknown, just like the price.

TitanX_Stylized_08

In addition to the GeForce GTX 980 Ti, Nvidia is also reportedly working on something called GeForce GTX 980 “metal enhanced version”. It is unknown what it is, but it is highly likely that this graphics adapters is based on a cut-down version of Nvidia’s GM200 GPU. Since nothing particular is known about yields of Nvidia’s largest graphics processor to date, it is impossible to guess configuration of its cut-down version with disabled processing units.

Price and performance of the GeForce GTX 980 Metal, if it ever sees the light of day, will be higher than those of the GeForce GTX 980, but lower compared to those of the GeForce GTX Titan X. Pricing of the solution will depend on performance and availability timeframe.

Nvidia Corp. has finished development of the rumoured GeForce GTX 980 Ti reference design, media reports claim. Moreover, the company may advance its launch in a bid to steal media attention from AMD’s forthcoming Radeon R9 390-series graphics adapters.

General specifications of Nvidia’s upcoming graphics card currently known as the GeForce GTX 980 Ti have been finalized, according to reports from SweClockers and Chiphell. The graphics board will get the fully-fledged GM200 graphics processing unit with 3072 stream processors, but “only” 6GB of GDDR5 memory. By contrast, Nvidia’s current flagship graphics card – GeForce GTX Titan X – carries 12GB of memory.

Since the GM200-based GeForce GTX 980 Ti will likely get printed-circuit board that is very similar to that of the GeForce GTX Titan X, development of the PCB hardly took a lot of time from Nvidia’s engineers.

Nvidia’s partners among graphics cards makers will be able to design their own PCBs for the GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card, one media report claims. Therefore, it is logical to expect companies like Asustek Computer, EVGA and other to design advanced GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics adapters with sophisticated 14-phase voltage regulating modules, enhanced PLL circuitry, improved GPU power plane and other innovations. Such graphics cards will likely be factory overclocked to provide incredible performance.

Earlier it was reported that Nvidia intended to release its second GM200-based graphics adapters in summer or fall, but the fresh rumours indicate that the company may release its new graphics board around the time when competing AMD Radeon R9 390-series solutions (allegedly based on the code-named “Fiji” silicon) hit the market in June. In the past Nvidia used to release new products right after its arch-rival launched its latest offerings. For example, the company launched its GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics card two days after AMD released the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT.

The price of the graphics adapter currently known as the GeForce GTX 980 Ti will be around $699 – $799. Performance of the graphics solution will be comparable to that of the GeForce GTX Titan X and at present it is unclear how exactly Nvidia will position two similar graphics solutions on the market.

KitGuru Says: Keeping in mind that the information about the GeForce GTX 980 Ti is unofficial and mostly comes from one or two sources, take it with a huge grain of salt. In fact, unless Nvidia deliberately wants to steal media attention from the Radeon R9 390-series graphics adapters, it does not need to release another GM200-powered graphics solution any time soon. Even the name of the adapter is in question since it leaves Nvidia no options regarding the name for a graphics board powered by a cut-down GM200.

Nvidia Corp. has reportedly slightly changed launch schedule of its GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card powered by the GM200 graphics processor. The latest market rumours suggest that the new adapter will hit the market in September and will be a part of the company’s product refresh this Fall.

Previously it was reported that Nvidia intends to release its GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card this summer, possibly to compete against AMD’s Radeon R9 390-series add-in-boards. While in the past Nvidia did release new graphics cards in summer, the move is generally unusual: end-users tend to buy new graphics adapters in Fall, whereas OEMs acquire new hardware even when it is not released officially. The plan to launch something new in September looks more logical.

TitanX_Stylized_08

Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti is expected to be powered by the fully-fledged GM200 graphics processing unit with 3072 stream processors, 192 texture mapping units, 96 raster operations pipelines as well as 384-bit memory interface. The main difference between the GeForce GTX 980 Ti and the GeForce GTX Titan X is expected to be the size of frame-buffer: 6GB of GDDR5 on the GTX 980 Ti vs. 12GB on the GTX Titan X.

As the GM200 graphics processing unit is extremely complex and record large, it is inevitable that there are GPUs with damaged compute or fixed-function units. Therefore, Nvidia needs to create a graphics adapter that will use GPUs with disabled parts and will be positioned below the GeForce GTX Titan X, but above the GTX 980. Keeping that in mind, it is highly likely that Nvidia will release not one GeForce GTX 900-series graphics card featuring the GM200 chip, but two of them: one with fully-fledged GPU and another with a cut-down version.

The recently introduced code-named GM200 graphics processing unit will not power only the GeForce GTX Titan X as well as the Quadro M6000 graphics cards. According to a media report, Nvidia Corp. is working on the GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics adapter, which is expected to rival not only the GeForce GTX 980, but even the GeForce GTX Titan X.

Nvidia plans to use fully-fledged GM200 graphics processing unit for the rumoured GeForce GTX 980 Ti, according to SweClockers. The graphics solution will feature 3072 stream processors, 192 texture mapping units, 96 raster operations pipelines as well as 384-bit memory interface. Moreover, clock-rate of the GPU is projected to be increased to around 1.1GHz. The only difference between the GTX 980 Ti and the GTX Titan X will be the amount of onboard memory: 6GB vs. 12GB, if the report is to be believed.

The new graphics solution is expected to hit the market this summer at the price of around $699. If the timing is correct, then the GeForce GTX 980 Ti will be positioned directly against AMD’s rumoured Radeon R9 390-series graphics cards.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_titan_gm200_maxwell

Nvidia needs a graphics aadapter that will be positioned below the GeForce GTX Titan X in order to sell GM200 graphics processing units that have non-functional execution units. Since GM200 graphics chip is incredibly complex and large, it is inevitable that there are GPUs with damaged compute or fixed-function units. Traditionally, companies disable broken parts of the chip and use such ASICs on less expensive graphics adapters. If both GeForce GTX Titan X and GeForce GTX Titan X use fully-fledged GM200 GPUs, it is unclear how Nvidia plans to sell cut-down GM200 graphics processors.

KitGuru Says: Existence of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics in Nvidia’s roadmap was predicted along with the emergence of the GeForce GTX Titan X months ago. While Nvidia’s plan to introduce the GTX 980 Ti is not surprising, specifications of the product are rather hard to believe in. The company needs to sell partly non-functional GM200 GPUs, but the GTX 980 Ti uses fully-fledged GPUs Nvidia also needs to refresh its graphics cards lineup this fall without introducing any new chips. To do the latter, it is logical for Nvidia to introduce GeForce GTX 985, 975 and 965 based on the GM204. However, offering GeForce GTX 980 Ti and GeForce GTX 985 at the same time is hardly a good thing since this will confuse buyers. In short, neither the name – GeForce GTX 980 Ti – of the product, nor its specifications look trustworthy right now. KitGuru will investigate the matter.

It took professional overclockers less than a week to prove that Nvidia Corp.’s latest GM200 graphics processing unit also known as the “Big Maxwell” can run at clock-rate that exceeds its default frequency by two times.

Vince “K|NGP|N” Lucido, one of the world’s top overclockers who collaborates with EVGA and owns a company that produces accessories for extreme cooling, this week managed to overclock a reference Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card to whopping 2020MHz for the GPU and 8200MHz for memory. The particular graphics board is currently the highest-performing single-chip graphics adapter on the planet.

TitanX_Stylized_010

The heavily overclocked GeFore GTX Titan X graphics card was cooled down using liquid nitrogen (LN2). It is unknown whether Mr. Lucido had to increase voltages of the GM200 GPU and the GDDR5 memory to achieve his remarkable result.

Using his test system based on an Intel Core i7-5960X processor overclocked to 5672MHz (also cooled-down using liquid nitrogen), an EVGA Intel X99 mainboard and 16GB of 3.30GHz DDR4 memory, Kingpin scored 24027 points in 3DMark FireStrike and 11612 in 3DMark FireStrike Extreme benchmarks, which are both new world’s records for single-GPU setups.

geforce_Gtx_titan_x_2200mhz_3dmark

As it turns out, Nvidia’s GM200 is a great overclocker despite of the fact that it contains 8 billion of transistors and was tuned for maximum energy efficiency, not for maximum overclockability.

Since Nvidia does not sell its GM200 graphics processors to its partners, but supplies them GeForce GTX Titan X graphics cards produced under its supervision by a contract manufacturer, we will hardly see any custom designed GM200-based graphics adapters any time soon. However, as soon as voltmodders find out how to increase voltages on reference GeForce GTX Titan X graphics cards, expect new records from professional overclockers.

KitGuru Says: The world’s record GPU frequency is 2.30GHz (set by Nvidia’s GM204 GPU several weeks ago). It will be tremendously interesting to see the maximum frequency of the GM200 and its performance at that clock-rate.

It is not a secret that Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card was designed to be an ultimate graphics card for enthusiasts, who usually overclock their hardware. The graphics adapter offers very high performance out-of-box, but, as it appears, even the best things can be improved by overclocking.

Specialists from PC Games Hardware flashed an Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card with a modified BIOS that increases voltages of graphics processing unit and memory. Thanks to increased amount of power available to the components, the graphics adapter could be overclocked to 1550MHz/8000MHz (core/memory). The journalists used Arctic Accelero Xtreme IV to cool-down the graphics card.

GeForce_GTX_TITANX_Stylized_03

Exact voltages of GPU and memory were not revealed, but the reporters indicate that the graphics board managed to remain perfectly stable at 1.50GHz/8GHz in all games in 4096*2160 resolution. Not all titles worked stably at 1550MHz GPU frequency. Still, even at 1.50GHz GPU clock-rate the graphics board demonstrated unprecedented performance for a single-chip graphics adapter.

It is surprising that Nvidia’s GM200 graphics processing unit, which contains 8 billion of transistors, can run at 1.50GHz at all. Typically, complex GPUs are hard to overclock.

KitGuru Says: Looks like the GM200 graphics processor will be a good overclocker, just like its predecessor, GK110. What remains to be seen is whether the GPU will be able to hit 2GHz and higher clock-rates, like the “Big Kepler” did when cooled-down using liquid nitrogen.

Despite of early rumours, Nvidia Corp. decided not to increase recommended price of its top-of-the-range GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card from $999 to $1349 in the U.S. However, at current exchange rates and with value added taxes in Europe, the graphics adapter will be considerably more expensive in this part of the world than in the U.S.

Typically companies like Nvidia and AMD adjust prices in different parts of the world so that to make them more or less similar and avoid “grey” imports from one country to another. However, due to the recent meteoric rise of the U.S. dollar against many currencies, this will not be exactly the case this time, which is why the latest GeForce GTX Titan X graphics adapters will be significantly more expensive in mainland Europe and the U.K. than in the U.S.

The official manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) of the GeForce GTX Titan X in the United Kingdom is £879, which is around $1300. Overclockers UK offers only two graphics cards at such price price-point: one from OcUK itself and another from Palit. All other graphics boards cost more than that. Nvidia’s flagship offering will cost 30 per cent more in the U.K. than in the U.S.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_titan_x

Due to different taxes in various countries in Eurozone, the GeForce GTX Titan X will cost €1149 in Germany, €1199 in France, Spain, Holland and Belgium, €1249 in Italy and the Baltic states as well as €1269 in Finland, reports Fudzilla.

The top-of-the-range graphics board from Nvidia will be priced at CHF 1199 ($1212) in Switzerland, SEK 11999 ($1293) in Sweden, NOK 11199 ($1387) in Norway and DKK 9499 ($1363) in Denmark.

Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card is powered by the GM200 “Big Maxwell” graphics processing unit with 3072 stream processors, 192 texture mapping units, 96 raster operations pipelines and 384-bit memory bus. The graphics adapter carries 12GB of high-speed GDDR5 memory onboard. A contract manufacturer makes all GeForce GTX Titan X graphics boards under the supervision of Nvidia.

Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X will be available in stores later this month.

KitGuru Says: While demand for ultra-expensive graphics cards is not really flexible and Nvidia will hardly sell a lot less GeForce GTX Titan X adapters because of high prices, it is still a bit sad to see that the difference between European and the U.S. prices is now higher than ever and exceeds 30 per cent in many cases.

VideoCardz has managed to obtain alleged benchmark results of Nvidia’s upcoming flagship graphics card. The web-site does not reveal such essential information as testbed configuration, driver versions and other details, it also does not disclose whether its journalists tested the new graphics card themselves or obtained results from third-party sources.

Based on the numbers published by VideoCardz, the GeForce GTX Titan operating at its default clock-speeds of 1GHz/7GHz (GPU/memory) scores:

  • 22903 points in 3DMark 11 Performance, which is 34.8 per cent faster compared to reference GeForce GTX 980;
  • 7427 points in 3DMark 11 Extreme, which is 39.9 per cent faster compared to reference GeForce GTX 980;
  • 17470 points in 3DMark FireStrike, which is 36 per cent faster compared to reference GeForce GTX 980;
  • 7989 points in 3DMark FireStrike Extreme, which is 36 per cent faster compared to reference GeForce GTX 980;

If the benchmark results are accurate, then the GeForce GTX Titan X performs just as expected: around 33 per cent faster than the GeForce GTX 980 in typical cases. For more detailed performance results, check the source.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Traditionally, take all unofficial benchmarks with a grain of salt because Nvidia can still update drivers or even alter clock-rates of commercial graphics cards. Nonetheless, given specifications of the GeForce GTX Titan X, it is logical to expect the board to have 33 – 50 per cent performance advantage over the GTX 980.

Nvidia Corp. made quite a surprise this week, when it unveiled its forthcoming top-of-the-range GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card at Game Developers Conference. Unfortunately, the company decided not to reveal a lot of details about its new flagship graphics card and while we do know that its performance is high, we have no idea how high it is. A good thing to know is that Nvidia plans to disclose all the details about the adapter in mid-March.

Nvidia plans to make public all technical specifications and key performance figures of the GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card at its GPU Technology Conference that kicks off on the 17th of March. It is possible that on the same date Nvidia will also reveal additional details about its product and architecture roadmaps and give a glimpse into the future of graphics processing units and GPGPU technologies.

There are a few things that we know about the GeForce GTX Titan X from official and unofficial sources already. The graphics card is powered by the code-named GM200 “Big Maxwell” graphics processing unit that is expected to feature 3072 stream processors, 192 texture units, 96 raster operations pipelines and 384-bit memory bus. The GM200 contains about eight billion transistors and is the world’s most complex GPU ever created. The GeForce GTX Titan X carries 12GB of 7GHz GDDR5 memory, has TDP of around 250W and supports up to 4-way multi-GPU configurations. The price of the card is expected to be around $1349, based on information from unofficial sources.

Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X will outperform previous-generation GeForce GTX Titan Black in all modern games and applications except those that require double precision FP64 compute capabilities. Even the GM200 will not be able to beat its predecessor, the GK110, in high-performance computing tasks (e.g., simulations) that require FP64.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story, but confirmed that it will reveal more information about the Titan X during its GPU Technology Conference.

While it is still unclear whether virtual reality technology will be adopted by the mass market, it will certainly be adopted by core gamers and video game developers. As a result, Game Developers Conference this year is flooded with various VR demos and hardware. Nvidia Corp. is naturally following the trend. The company will not only position its new top-of-the range Titan X as an ultimate VR solution, but will also introduce multi-GPU technology for VR gaming.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_titan

While the Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X is definitely not designed for the mass market, but rather for hardcore gamers, who demand the highest performance without compromises, the graphics card is used across the GDC trade-show to drive various virtual reality demos. Apparently, Nvidia wants to position its highest-performing graphics adapter as an ultimate solution for VR gaming. In particular, the GeForce GTX Titan X is used to drive the following demos at various venues at GDC:

  • Back to Dinosaur Island by Crytek
  • Thief in the Shadows by Epic Games and WETA Digital
  • Showdown by Epic Games
  • Return to Dinosaur Island, Thief in the Shadows, Showdown by Oculus
  • Unity 5 by Unity
  • Portal, Job Simulator, TheBluVR and the Gallery demos by Valve

Without any doubts, the Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X will be an extremely powerful graphics solution. However, when it comes to no-compromise gaming, only sky is the limit. At GDC Nvidia announced enhancements to its VR Direct software with new support for VR SLI 2-way multi-GPU technology and asynchronous time warp (ATW).

crytek_vr_dinosaur_island
Crytek’s VR demo let viewers get up close and personal with a tyrannosaurus rex.

The VR SLI will work differently than contemporary multi-GPU technology. Traditionally, multi-GPU configurations either use AFR [alternate frame rendering] or SFR [split frame rendering] technologies to either render subsequent frames on multiple GPUs or split one frame into two parts and render them simultaneously. Nvidia’s VR SLI enables developers to assign a specific GPU to each eye to scale performance and reduce latency. When VR SLI is combined with GeForce GTX Titan X, it unlocks an incredible level of graphics performance and quality.

Yet another important component of essential VR set of technologies is support for asynchronous time warp (ATW), a low-latency rendering technique that requires to schedule and execute compute and display operations independently of the graphics queue. ATW allows to reduce perceived latency by adjusting a rendered image (essentially, by generating intermediate frames) based on head-tracking input (or based on other things). Nvidia claims that its drivers now provide application programming interfaces for GPU scheduling controls (which most probably means that ATW could be used only in case of DirectX 12 or Vulcan APIs). The ATW technology is also supported by AMD.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_titan_x

An alpha developer driver with VR SLI and ATW support is now in the hands of various software developers, according to Nvidia.

Previously it was reported that AMD used its upcoming flagship Radeon R9 graphics card to demonstrate Showdown VR demo by Epic Games at its press event at GDC. Besides, AMD claims that Epic has another system featuring the GPU in its own booth running the same demo.

KitGuru Says: Nvidia uses VR hype in a bid to promote its new GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card, which is not surprising at all. It is great to see that Nvidia now supports VR SLI as well as asynchronous time warp rendering, it will eventually pay off in better VR titles and experience. However, those, who plan to get a GeForce GTX Titan X should clearly understand that even this graphics card will get outdated by the time when the first virtual reality titles developed from scratch get published.

Nvidia Corp. demonstrated its upcoming GeForce GTX Titan X graphics cards in its booth at the Game Developers Conference and allowed the press to take pictures of the board. Just like its single-chip predecessors from the ultra-high-end league, the novelty uses an ultra-quiet cooler, is multi-GPU-capable and is not very power hungry. Moreover, the card is already in production.

Legit Reviews has published a lot of GeForce GTX Titan X’s photos and revealed some additional peculiarities about the graphics card that promises to be the fastest single-GPU graphics solution on the market for some time thanks to massive amount of stream processors, 12GB of GDDR5 memory and Nvidia’s “Maxwell” architecture.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X will continue to use blower-type dual-slot cooler introduced two years ago along with the original GeForce GTX Titan. The new cooler is completely black and has holographic word “Titan” embossed on it. The cooling solution is expected to remain very quiet and efficient. The length of the graphics card seems to be similar to that of its predecessors.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_titan_legit_reviews_s1

The new flagship graphics adapter from Nvidia has two MIO connectors for multi-GPU SLI configurations, one 6-pin PCIe and one 8-pin PCIe auxiliary power connectors, three DisaplyPort, one HDMI as well as one DVI output. This means that the graphics card can support 2-way, 3-way or 4-way SLI multi-GPU configurations (just because someone thinks that 3072 stream processors of the GM200 are not enough to play games fine and 12288 SPs are just what the doctor ordered) and will not consume more than 300W of power, which is not that lot by modern standards.

The graphics card, which Legit Reviews pictured, featured all the stickers typically found on commercial graphics cards that are in production. Therefore, Nvidia can probably start to ship the new Titan X graphics card shortly.

The card carries 24 GDDR5 memory chips and has a rather sophisticated voltage regulator module.

Nvidia Corp. unexpectedly unveiled its highest-performing single-chip gaming graphics card at the Game Developers Conference on Wednesday. The new GeForce GTX Titan X will emerge on the store shelves in the coming weeks and will be the pinnacle of the “Maxwell” architecture. Let’s recap what we already know about the GeForce GTX Titan X and what should we expect from it.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card with 12GB of onboard GDDR5 memory will be powered by the code-named GM200 graphics processor that contains over eight billion of transistors. The GPU, which is also known as the “Big Maxwell”, is the most complex graphics processor ever made. 12GB of memory indirectly confirm that the graphics processing unit sports 384-bit memory bus, which, given the “Maxwell” architecture (and ROP to memory controller ratio), points to 96 raster operating units. Earlier it was reported that the GM200 would feature 3072 stream processors and 192 texture units, which seem to be accurate information.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_titan_x

The “Big Maxwell” is projected to offer around 33 – 50 per cent higher performance than the GeForce GTX 980, given its configuration, depending on applications. However, keep in mind that Nvidia’s “Maxwell” was not designed to handle professional computing tasks, therefore, it does not support native double precision FP64 compute capabilities. Even the GM200 will not be able to beat its predecessor, the GK110 in high-performance computing tasks (e.g., simulations) that require FP64.

nvidia_gm200_gpu_geforce_titan_unofficial

If Nvidia managed to maintain transistor density of the code-named GM204 graphics processor with the GM200, then the chip itself should be pretty large, about 615mm², which will result in extremely high cost. If the GM200’s die size is indeed 615mm², then a 300mm wafer can produce hold only around 95 of such chips. TSMC’s revenue per wafer processed using 28nm fabrication technology was $5850 last year. Therefore, even if GM200’s yield rate is at 100 per cent (all dies are good and can run in full configuration), one chip should cost Nvidia over $61 without testing and packaging. At 85 per cent yield, one GM200 chip costs the GPU designer around $73 without testing and packaging.

The GeForce GTX Titan X graphics board will carry 12GB of GDDR5 memory running at 7GHz. 12GB of memory is not only excessive for today’s video games, but is also very expensive. For some reason, Nvidia decided not to use SK Hynix and Micron’s premium GDDR5 components capable of running at 8GHz, but even current memory sub-system provides 336GB/s of bandwidth, which is a lot. Keeping in mind that Nvidia’s “Maxwell” GPUs use memory bandwidth very efficiently, the new GeForce GTX Titan X should demonstrate unbelievable performance in ultra-high-definition resolutions, such as 3840*2160.

The ultra-expensive GPU and a lot of memory will naturally make the new Titan X a very expensive graphics card. Previously it was reported that the board will cost $1349 in retail when it becomes available.

Keep in mind that many of the details about the GeForce GTX Titan X are yet to be confirmed by Nvidia at the GPU Technology Conference later this month.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The real surprise about the GeForce GTX Titan X is that Nvidia decided to install 12GB of GDDR5 memory on a consumer-class graphics card. This will ensure that the board’s performance will not be limited by memory capacity any time soon, but this naturally increases the price. What remains to be seen is how high performance of the new Titan X will be in real-life applications. While the board will clearly leave behind existing graphics solution, it is not completely clear whether it is worth $1349.

Nvidia Corp.’s code-named GM204 graphics processing unit has once again managed to set a new frequency record for graphics processing units. A well-known overclocker has succeeded in pushing the frequency of the GPU to 2.30GHz clock-rate, but could not eventually replicate the record because of high humidity.

Steponz, a leading overclocker from the U.S., has overclocked his EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB graphics card to 2300MHz for the GPU and 8712MHz (2178MHz*4) for GDDR5 memory. The GM204 GPU voltage (VDDC) was increased to whopping 1.212V and the graphics board was cooled down using liquid nitrogen (LN2). When later he tried to push the clock-rate to 2.30GHz, the test system malfunctioned because of high humidity.

“Had 2300/2200, but last three seconds setup went bad,” said Steponz in his comments over at Hwbot.org. “Really bad humidity here today. Going to play tomorrow too. […] If they humidity wasn't so bad, 2300MHz would have been there, just so much water everywhere and in the pot.”

Using his test bed powered by an Intel Core i7-5960X processor clocked at 5.815GHz (also cooled-down using liquid nitrogen), a Gigabyte X99 SOC Champion mainboard and 16GB of 3.10GHz DDR4 memory, Steponz scored 10459 points in 3DMark FireStrike Extreme (using the graphics board functioning at 2.30GHz/8712MHz), which is the world’s new record for a single-GPU setup. He also scored 48193 points in Catzilla 720p benchmark (using the card operating at 2278/8812MHz), the highest result for a single-GPU system ever achieved.

Steponz specifically mentioned that the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB was a “monster card” thanks to massive amount of enhancements designed to improve overclocking potential. Nearly half of a year after the release of the board, overclockers still manage to set new records using this graphics adapter and push the GM204 to its limits.

KitGuru Says: With the “regular” EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified hitting 2.30GHz on GPU, it is now even more interesting to see what the improved version of the graphics adapter – the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Kingpin Edition – can do. Will we see GM204 hitting 2.40GHz?

Jen-Hsun Huang, chief executive officer of Nvidia Corp. on Tuesday wrote an open letter to the company’s customers covering the recent GeForce GTX 970 controversy. The head of the GPU developer admitted that the company failed to communicate how memory sub-system works on the GeForce GTX 970, but said that the graphics card should still be considered as a “4GB” adapter. He promised not to make the same mistake again.

“Some of you are disappointed that we didn’t clearly describe the segmented memory of GeForce GTX 970 when we launched it,” wrote Mr. Huang. “We invented a new memory architecture in Maxwell. This new capability was created so that reduced-configurations of Maxwell can have a larger framebuffer. […] GTX 970 is a 4GB card. However, the upper 512MB of the additional 1GB is segmented and has reduced bandwidth.”

Although Mr. Huang admitted that the GeForce GTX 970’s memory sub-system works rather oddly, he did not reveal why the company incorrectly stated the amount of raster operations pipelines (64 instead of 56) and level-two cache size (2048KB instead of 1792KB).

“Unfortunately, we failed to communicate this internally to our marketing team, and externally to reviewers at launch,” Mr. Huang acknowledged.

This is the not the first time Nvidia admits is mistake and blames poor communication within the company for the incorrect advertising. However, Nvidia offers no compensation to customers, who bought the GeForce GTX 970 based on specifications of the product.

Last week an end-user sued Nvidia for incorrect advertising and demanded a refund from the company.

KitGuru Says: While it is good to see that Nvidia’s chief executive officer takes the GeForce GTX 970 issue very seriously, he did not reveal anything new and did not propose anything to owners of the graphics cards. While it is obvious that the GeForce GTX 970 is a great performer for the money, it is clear that many people are disappointed with the fact that they did not get what they paid for (and some even report about issues like micro-stuttering, which is a clear driver problem) and providing them some kind of a compensation would be a good step. It is unknown why Nvidia does not want to give anything back to its customers in this case.

The full text of Jen-Hsun Huang’s letter reads as follows:

Hey everyone,

Some of you are disappointed that we didn’t clearly describe the segmented memory of GeForce GTX 970 when we launched it. I can see why, so let me address it.

We invented a new memory architecture in Maxwell. This new capability was created so that reduced-configurations of Maxwell can have a larger framebuffer – i.e., so that GTX 970 is not limited to 3GB, and can have an additional 1GB.

GTX 970 is a 4GB card. However, the upper 512MB of the additional 1GB is segmented and has reduced bandwidth. This is a good design because we were able to add an additional 1GB for GTX 970 and our software engineers can keep less frequently used data in the 512MB segment.

Unfortunately, we failed to communicate this internally to our marketing team, and externally to reviewers at launch.

Since then, Jonah Alben, our senior vice president of hardware engineering, provided a technical description of the design, which was captured well by several editors. Here’s one example from The Tech Report.

Instead of being excited that we invented a way to increase memory of the GTX 970 from 3GB to 4GB, some were disappointed that we didn’t better describe the segmented nature of the architecture for that last 1GB of memory.

This is understandable. But, let me be clear: Our only intention was to create the best GPU for you. We wanted GTX 970 to have 4GB of memory, as games are using more memory than ever.

The 4GB of memory on GTX 970 is used and useful to achieve the performance you are enjoying. And as ever, our engineers will continue to enhance game performance that you can regularly download using GeForce Experience.

This new feature of Maxwell should have been clearly detailed from the beginning.

We won’t let this happen again. We’ll do a better job next time.

While only a small fraction of GeForce GTX 970 owners plan to return their graphics cards to stores following a scandal with the product's specs, there are still quite a lot of people, who got upset not only because the company originally published incorrect specifications, but because it decided to remain silent even after the mistake was uncovered. Apparently, those people have decided to take Nvidia Corp. to court because of it.

Andrew Ostrowski, individually and on behalf of all others similarly situated, this week filled a class-action suit against Nvidia in the U.S. district court for the northern district of California. The complaint accuses Nvidia and Gigabyte Technology of misleading advertising, unfair business practices, unlawful business practices, and deceptive business practices. The lawsuit seeks a jury trial as well as disgorgement, restitution, injunctive relief and all the other damages and reliefs permitted under California law.

Back in January it was discovered that Nvidia incorrectly declared the amount of raster operations pipelines (ROPs), actual memory bandwidth, capacity of L2 cache and the amount of high-speed onboard memory for its GeForce GTX 970 graphics adapter. Instead of 64 ROPs, the GPU features only 56 ROPs; actual usable memory bandwidth at present is less than 224GB/s; the L2 size is 1792KB, not 2048KB; and the amount of memory should be indicated as 3.5GB + 0.5GB because only 3.5GB can be accessed with maximum data-rate due to limitations of the cut-down GM204 architecture of the GeForce GTX 970.

“The defendants engaged in a scheme to mislead consumers nationwide about the characteristics, qualities and benefits of the GTX 970 by stating that the GTX 970 provides a true 4GB of VRAM, 64 ROPs, and 2048 KB of L2 cache capacity, when in fact it does not,” the lawsuit states. “Defendants’ marketing of the GTX 970 was intended to and did create the perception among purchasers that the product was, in fact, able to conform with the specifications as advertised.”

GTX_970_Style

Nvidia has admitted that it incorrectly stated specifications of the GeForce GTX 970. The company said that all performance limitations associated with the specs cannot be cured with a driver update. However, the GPU developer did not promise any compensation to owners of such graphics cards. Moreover, Nvidia unofficially wants to distance itself from the scandal, according to a media report. By contrast, numerous retailers and graphics cards makers accept returns of the GeForce GTX 970 graphics adapters or provide partial refunds to their owners. Only between 1 and 5 per cent of owners have so far returned their GTX 970 add-in-boards.

Since the lawsuit is a class action one, it may be joined by other people, who believe that Nvidia and Gigabyte deceived them with the GeForce GTX 970 specifications.

Nvidia declined to comment on the lawsuit, reports PCWorld web-site. Gigabyte did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Usually proceedings like this one last for years, hence, do not expect any results any time soon. In fact, one of the reasons why the lawsuit was filled was the fact that Nvidia decided admit its mistakes, but offered nothing back to gamers. Keeping in mind that mobile Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M graphics processor is also affected by the same memory and ROP issues as the GeForce GTX 970, expect notebook gamers to slam Nvidia too…

Although Nvidia Corp.’s partners will clearly suffer financial losses because of the scandal with incorrect specifications of the GeForce GTX 970, the designer of graphics processing units does not plan to admit its mistake at all costs, according to a media report.

Even though return rates of the GeForce GTX 970 are very low, Nvidia does not want to take responsibility for incorrect specifications and memory allocation issues. The company officially claims that the GeForce GTX 970 was designed this way and that its performance is rather high despite of the fact that it has 56 raster operations pipelines, 224-bit memory bus and 3.5GB of memory.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_970

Nvidia has not apologized to its customers for incorrect specifications and does not want to admit any guilt because this will give its partners an opportunity to ask for material compensation, reports Heise.de. Profit margins of graphics cards makers are pretty low, which means that for them even 1 – 5 per cent return rate could result in losses.

Since Nvidia does not want to admit its guilt, it is now illogical to expect any kind of compensation to the end-users.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

Steponz, a leading overclocker from the U.S., has managed to overclock his EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB graphics card to 2250MHz for the GPU and 8712MHz for GDDR5 memory. The graphics board was cooled down using liquid nitrogen (LN2).

At present 2.25GHz is the world’s record clock-rate for any graphics processing unit, which is 49MHz higher than the previous record set by Vince “K|NGP|N” Lucido several months ago. Unfortunately, the frequency of GDDR5 memory did not make it to 9GHz, another record set by Mr. Lucido last November using the same graphics card.

Using a test-rig powered by an Intel Core i7-5960X processor clocked at 5.815GHz (also cooled-down using liquid nitrogen), a Gigabyte X99 SOC Champion mainboard and 16GB of 3.10GHz DDR4 memory, Steponz scored 10075 points in 3DMark FireStrike Extreme benchmark, the highest result for a single-GPU setup ever achieved.

The EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB graphics card is among the highest-performing GM204-based graphics adapters that money can buy. Thanks to major improvements of PCB design, the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified has been the graphics card of choice of extreme overclockers for months since it has enabled great GPU and memory overclocking results.

Recently EVGA launched its new GeForce GTX 980 K|NGP|N Edition graphics card with ACX 2.0+ cooler and additional enhancements in design. It is expected that the new printed-circuit board and other tweaks will enable overclockers to further push the limits of Nvidia’s GM204 graphics processing unit.

KitGuru Says: Looks like the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified still has some overclocking potential left since nearly 50MHz frequency increase seems rather significant at such extreme clock-rates. It will be tremendously interesting to see what the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Kingpin Edition is capable of. Vince “K|NGP|N” Lucido achieved 2.20GHz GPU clock-rate on the card relatively easy, but so far he has not publicly tried to boost the frequency further. Will it hit 2.30GHz?
