Federal prosecutors in the states have said that data from Megaupload users could start being deleted by Thursday this week. The lawyers for the defense however are trying to fight the procedure, saying that they are less able to defend themselves in court if data is removed.

US prosecutors have blocked access to Megaupload and seven men are charged, including founder Kim Dotcom. The site is said to have broken copyright, serving movies, applications and tv shows to millions of people across the world. The defense lawyer has said that people share their own data and files, including movies and personal documents.

The files are stored on servers which are paid for by Megaupload. The government has frozen the account however and those companies are now not being paid for their services.

Carpathia Hosting and Cogent Communications Group may start deleting data on Thursday … two of the primary storage companies involved with Megaupload. Attorney for Megaupload Ira Rothken has said that 50 million Megaupload users are in danger of data being wiped, unless action can be taken to stop the files being deleted.

Kitguru says: Megaupload is based in Hong Kong, although US authorities say they have grounds to act as some of the leased servers are based in Virginia.
