Earlier this year, Microsoft officially ended its $1/£1 free trial offer for new Xbox Game Pass subscribers. The deal returned shortly after but it has now been tweaked again, shortening the trial period to two weeks. Now, just days ahead of Starfield's launch, the trial offer has been removed again.

When Microsoft first ended the $1 Game Pass trial, it stated that it would be evaluating new promotions in the future. The offer was reintroduced this summer and a few weeks ago, was tweaked again to cut the trial period down from a full month to two weeks. Now as spotted by Eurogamer, Microsoft has removed the trial option from the Game Pass sign-up page.

All of these tweaks have arrived just ahead of Starfield's launch. Those with a Game Pass membership can pay £34.99 to upgrade to the premium edition and get five days of early access, or play the standard version of the game at release. Given that Microsoft wants to maximise Starfield's earnings potential, it is easy to see why Microsoft may want to pause the trial offer around the game's launch.

Moving forward, I think we can expect to see Microsoft's Game Pass trial offer become available periodically, in the months leading up to first-party game launches, with a pause taking place around the time of a big launch. We don't know of the trial offer will be back in time for Forza Motorsport's release date in October.

KitGuru says: This didn't happen around the time of Halo Infinite's launch but doing this for future major releases does make sense, as many people start new accounts to take advantage of the Game Pass offer.

A couple of weeks ago, leaks indicated that Nvidia would soon offer GeForce Now RTX 3080 memberships in one-month batches, in addition to being available as a six-month long subscription. This week, that membership has officially rolled out and the GeForce Now library has expanded with a few more titles.

Nvidia has now to introduced a 1-month option for those looking to subscribe to GeForce Now’s RTX 3080 tier. With the addition of the 1-month option, the RTX 3080 tier offers the same flexibility as the priority membership, which has always had 1-month and 6-month subscription options. The RTX 3080 tier is expensive though, coming in at £17.99 per month.

As we see every Thursday, today Nvidia has also rolled out some new games for the GeForce Now library. Six games have been added to the service, including:

  • Buccaneers! (New release on Steam)

  • Distant Worlds 2 (New release on Steam)

  • Ironsmith Medieval Simulator (New release on Steam)

  • Bus Driver Simulator (Steam)

  • Martha is Dead (Steam)

  • Survival Quiz CITY (Steam)

KitGuru Says: Turtle Beach make some pretty good headsets but lots of pro gamers are actually sponsored and have their equipment supplied to them from companies like Steel Series or Razer. A sponsorship programme may have made more sense.  Do any of you guys own a Turtle Beach headset? What do you think of it?

One of the biggest problems for any successful MMO, is how to deal with Gold farmers. The often bot-controlled, repetitive questers that just grind away in order to build up in-game gold and then sell it to other players for real-world cash, often through some illegitimate site. It not only messes with the game's economy but can put players at risk by forcing them to go down these unsavoury routes if they want to buy gold. Runescape developer Jagex however, has found a way to almost eliminate the practice: a bond system.

These bonds are available to buy straight from Jagex as an in-game item. They can then be ‘consumed,' to give the player an extra 14 days of membership, or they can be sold for in-game gold. This essentially gives players the ability to buy gold if they want it, since there will always be those that are happy to trade their in-game money for real play time.

They can also get you into the Runescape lottery with free “spins.”

The reaction was immediate, with the community seeing a drop off of as much as 81 per cent of illegitimate gold trading. “While we anticipated that the launch of Bonds would impact the flow of illegal wealth into the game, we are thrilled the initiative has resulted in such a strong and immediate impact,” Jagex told PCGamesn. “This action lays the foundations for RuneScape to continue going from strength to strength in its second successful decade!”

The community is really pleased with the bond system as well apparently, with players able to buy membership with in-game gold, it's letting long term – but perhaps poorer gamers – gift membership time to friends. The bonds can also be traded in for tickets to Runefest, a Runescape convention, the third of which is set to take place in just a few days time.

Kitguru Says: Good for Jagex. It takes a much more understanding approach to player actions to implement something like this. Like certain parts of our contemporary society, there are activities that people are going to take part in, whether you threaten to ban them or not. The best way you can improve the experience for players is to make it so they don't have to go somewhere shady to do it and you can then use profits from that to improve the game for everyone. It's a win win.
