Being the first in the franchise without creator Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Survive was already in the firing line in the eyes of long term fans before it was discovered that the title would carry questionable microtransactions. In a bittersweet nod to the renowned predecessors, it seems that the development team behind Survive have left a secret message for the keen eyed.

The message is hidden within the game’s character creator, in which the player is shown a clipboard with their name on it alongside other soldiers. More notable of the bunch is Zero, a staple character of the franchise.

More interesting, however, is that Redditors have spotted that the first letter of each surname spells out “KJP Forever,” likely in reference to Kojima Productions, one of the core development teams for the Metal Gear series, headed by Hideo Kojima himself. The same can be seen again from the bottom upwards within another screenshot, slimming the chances of this being a coincidence.

Deepening the mystery, ‘Bastard Yota’ and ‘Cunning Yuji’ can be seen at the bottom of the list, perhaps in reference to Survive’s director, Yota Tsutsumizaki, and producer, Yuji Korekado. And interesting choice of prefixes for the two, if so.

Kojima Productions shut its doors in July 2015 after Konami’s rather public dispute with Kojima came to a head and the director was booted from the studio at the end of his contract. This resulted in Konami stripping Kojima’s name from any Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain box art before shipping in September 2015. Fortunately, Kojima Productions has reformed as an independent game studio and is currently working with Sony on Death Stranding.

While bittersweet and not particularly the magnum opus that Kojima wanted his name attached to, it’s nice to see an aura of respect between the two teams. Konami is publicly steering clear of any further controversy with the director, but did include a nod to the previous team as whole under its “special thanks” credit instead.

KitGuru Says: I have yet to play Metal Gear Survive before judging it, but so far things have left me a little doubtful. This does entice me to take another look, but knowing that I would have to pay $10 simply for something that should be included in the game, like save slots, definitely makes me want to turn a blind eye. How do you feel about Metal Gear Survive?

There have been many opportunities to slate Konami over the last couple of years following the publisher's fallout with Hideo Kojima. If you were hoping to push past that and approach Metal Gear Survive with an open mind, then I have bad news for you, because it seems that Konami's greed knows no bounds, as it will cost you $10 just to unlock a second save slot in the game.

Metal Gear Survive may have ended up being better than expected gameplay wise, but there is still plenty of microtransaction foolery going on. Konami is hoping to continuously make money on the game by selling SV coins, an in-game currency that is not earnable through gameplay. You start the game out with just one save slot, and to unlock another one, you'll need to spend 1000 SV coins.

Here is a breakdown of how much SV coins cost:

100 SV coins – $0.99
550 SV coins – $4.99
1150 SV coins – $9.99
3500 SV coins – $29.99
6000 SV coins – $49.99

So in short, it will cost you $9.99 just to get access to another save file. Alternatively, you could delete your first and only save if you want to start again, but that doesn't necessarily excuse the idea of charging for save slots in the first place.

Let's not forget that this isn't a free to play game either, it costs $40 in the US and £34.99 here in the UK. Oddly enough though, most of the Steam reviews on the game are currently positive, but if many more crazy microtransaction shenanigans come to light, then I imagine that will start to change.

KitGuru Says: The idea of charging for additional save slots in a game that you have to pay for seems insane to me. I haven't had a chance to spend much time in the game myself yet, but if the microtransactions end up being as bad as they seem based on this information, then I may just give it a miss. Have any of you played Metal Gear Survive yet?

Metal Gear Survive is an upcoming base defense game that has caused quite the controversy due to the nature of series creator Hideo Kojima’s departure from publisher Konami. Well, that and its push into the ongoing microtransaction crisis. For those that manage to look past that, however, here are the system requirements to run the title on PC.

Both the minimum and recommended specifications aren’t too strenuous, however the graphics card must be compatible with DirectX 11 and the processor should be running at 3.4GHz for a smooth experience. The game only requires 20GB of storage space, which is relatively small for modern game, however Metal Gear Survive is meant to act as a smaller-than-average triple-A title with this reflected in the price.

Minimum specifications:

  • OS: Windows 7×64, Windows 8×64, Windows 10×64 (64-bit OS Required)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-4460 (3.40GHz) or better; Quad-core or better
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 (2GB) or better (DirectX 11 card Required)
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 20 GB available space
  • Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

Recommended specifications:

  • OS: Windows 7×64, Windows 8×64, Windows 10×64 (64-bit OS Required)
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-4790 (3.60GHz) or better; Quad-core or better
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 (DirectX 11 graphic card required)
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 20 GB available space
  • Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card (Surround Sound 5.1)

For the best experience, Nvidia users are also advised to download the latest Game Ready Driver, which adds support for sharing the game in various different ways, from ShadowPlay Highlights (or is it Share now?) to screenshots.

Metal Gear Survive is set to launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on February 20th in North America and February 22nd in Europe. PC, however, will see a worldwide release on Steam from February 21st.

KitGuru Says: I know it’s blasphemy as a Metal Gear fan, but I am keeping an eye on the title. Since it’s built on one of the best video game engines out there, the Fox Engine, it’s hard to imagine it being anything but a good game. That being said, it could be hollow with very little to do. Will you be picking up Metal Gear Survive?

Metal Gear Survive entered open beta last week, hoping to wow everyone back onto the side of Konami after its debacle with Metal Gear creator, Hideo Kojima. While it unsurprisingly has great mechanics, Survive has opted to include both gameplay-affecting microtransactions and the requirement of constant online connectivity.

The title is set to release next month, giving players the first game in the Metal Gear series since its creator, Kojima, unceremoniously left Konami. Now, the publisher has revealed that Metal Gear Survive will require players to constantly be connected to the internet to play both multiplayer and singleplayer.

“Metal Gear Survive's online connectivity requirements were built to support a seamless integration between single player and co-op. This will also enable us to provide ongoing content post-launch,” explains Konami in an interview with Gamespot.

Microtransactions were discovered in the menu of the title’s beta last week, in which players have access to a store to buy currency. While this currency can similarly be earned via gameplay, the problem with this is that the purchases will provide stat boosts to the player character, giving them an advantage over others. Since Metal Gear Survive has both co-op and multiplayer, this seems like an odd design choice indeed.

The release date for Metal Gear Survive is staggered, with it landing in North America on February 20th, Japan on February 21st and the remainder on February 22nd. It will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

KitGuru Says: While I was willing to give the title a chance given that it sports the best thing about Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, it’s mechanics, I am now heavily reconsidering due to practices like this. Some people don’t have consistent internet connection and should have the right to play offline, whereas those that play online shouldn’t be at a disadvantage due to money. How do you feel about Metal Gear Survive?

Konami’s first Metal Gear game without creator Hideo Kojima by its side is set to release in February with an upcoming beta scheduled for next month. Unfortunately, PC users will be disappointed to know that they won’t be able to test Metal Gear Survive in January, but the publisher has released details of its single-player campaign to get everyone excited regardless.

As we already knew, Metal Gear Survive follows Big Boss’ soldiers who were present on Mother Base at the time of a strange phenomenon causing a wormhole to open in the sky. After pulling them into the vortex, the soldiers are dropped into an alternate world six months later, all according to the plan of a “mysterious organisation.”

Since this world is crawling with cystalised zombie-like “Wanderers”, Metal Gear Survive, of course, forces the player to survive by hunting for food, gathering materials and crafting weapons, gear and structures to help defend themselves. Base building is also an incredibly important mechanic, in which survivors you save throughout your journey will eventually join your cause.

“You never know when the Wanderers will attack your base camp,” says the narrator, “you have to be prepared for it at any time—don't forget to set your defences.”

Unfortunately for solo players, the stronger, more “powerful items and weapons” are locked behind the multiplayer component, in which players will be rewarded the recipes. This is likely to save to the individual account and be utilised in single-player, however.

It seems that melee weapons are preferable in this title, with ammo for ranged firearms being incredibly scarce. Wanderers also respond to noise, so melee weapons and even the bow are much more preferable. The latter also enables you to retrieve used arrows to reuse in the future.

Metal Gear Survive uses a similar mission system to its counterparts, offering a main line of missions to offer story and further the protagonist’s campaign, as well as side missions that can help build that character’s gear to better survive the harder missions later down the line.

Metal Gear Survive launches on the 20th and 22nd February in the US and Europe respectively.

KitGuru Says: While Kojima’s fans are unlikely to be swayed, I do like the look of the mechanics and can feel myself being enticed so long as I don’t consider it a true Metal Gear title. After all, the mechanics in The Phantom Pain (which it shares) are great. My main gripe is that I can’t realistically abbreviate it to MGS. What do you think of the new MS: Survive footage?

Metal Gear Survive was announced last year as the first title in the series after Hideo Kojima was very publicly released from Konami. Since then, the publisher has revealed that the title is set to receive a staggered launch depending on region, but will in fact be coming to PC as well as Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Those in North America should mark the 20th February 2018 off on their calendar, while those interested in Europe will have to wait a little longer as Metal Gear Survive is pegged to launch two days later, on the 22nd February. Pricing is to be confirmed for different regions but it won't come with a full priced, $60 price tag. The UK currently has a confirmed price of £34.99 for all versions.

So far, these dates only apply to the console version of the game, but the title is set to launch on Steam at some point down the line. Given that ease of developing for multiple platforms was the primary function of the Fox Engine, to which Metal Gear Survive runs on just as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain before it, it would be an incredibly silly move from Konami not to utilise its full potential.

The game is currently available to preorder, with the ‘Survival Pack’ as a special bonus for doing so. The Survival Pack includes 4 gold plated weapons, 2 additional gestures, 4 metallic survival scarves because, you know, it’s cold out there, “Kabuki” face paint, “Boxman (The Orange) accessory and a Mother Base nameplate similar to that earned in games like Call of Duty.

The premise of Metal Gear Survive has been met with mixed to negative reception, with many feeling like the direction of a zombie-apocalyptic survival game set in an alternate reality is a far stretch from Metal Gear canon. Of course, the game is likely to miss Kojima’s dash of ingenuity, but as far as lore is concerned, multiple realities isn’t that far out there.

Most of the series dabbles with alternate realities in non-canon ways, such as games like Metal Gear Acid, a collectable card game that integrates turn based combat over the signature Tactical Espionage Action. Another example is Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance’s Snake Tales, which are also not canon, but explicitly delve into the premise of other timelines.

KitGuru Says: While I am not totally invested in the idea of Metal Gear Survive, detaching myself from the expectations of a core Metal Gear title has me interested to see what they can produce on the Fox Engine. The gameplay of The Phantom Pain was fantastic, even if it was a far cry from the series peak, so more of that perhaps wouldn’t be the worst thing. Are you interested in Metal Gear Survive?

Kojima may not be working at Konami anymore but that doesn't mean we won't be seeing more Metal Gear. Konami has already released an MGS gambling machine in Japan and now the publisher is preparing a new spin-off for the series known as Metal Gear Survive. It's a zombie survival game, so hopefully you aren't completely sick of those just yet.

Metal Gear Survive is set in an alternate timeline between the events of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V. It will retain the stealth-action style that the series is known for, except this time you will be in a four-player co-op setting trying to survive against creatures and biological threats.

The official blurb reads: “In a struggle to stay alive on this harsh terrain filled with deadly creatures, soldiers who were previously on Motherbase now must work cooperatively in order to survive”. A trailer of the game was also released today at Gamescom.

Metal Gear Survive will be coming out on the PC, Xbox One and PS4 at some point in 2017.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: While this is being labelled as a survival game, it doesn't seem to have the same traits as many of the Early Access titles we see, like DayZ or Rust. Instead, it seems to be more of a survival horror title with an actual story. That said, we haven't seen much yet. What do you guys make of this? Will you be giving this a go, or will you be avoiding Metal Gear without Kojima's involvement?
