SteelSeries is launching its own line of gaming microphones for enthusiasts looking to have the best audio for comms or for streamers looking to upgrade their broadcast. Utilising AI, SteelSeries is able to offer pretty impressive background noise cancellation too.

With a 1″ capsule that is three times larger than average, the Alias can capture your voice more accurately regardless of your position towards the microphone. Moreover, there's the Sonar software, an AIO sound studio for managing all areas of livestream audio creation. Sonar is a single app that allows you to mix and route the sound of your applications as well as personalise the sound of your microphone with ClearCast AI noise suppression and a 10-band equaliser.

The standard Alias also offers LED level monitoring to clearly indicate if the microphone is muted or not, as well as noise levels. In addition, it also features a shock mount as part of the included desk stand, perfect to reduce unwanted vibrations. Alternatively, you can mount the Alias on a boom arm.

The Alias Pro is a step up over the original, bundling everything you need to broadcast to a single or dual PC, including a Stream Mixer (with customisable controls) and two USB cables. Because it uses an XLR connection, the Alias Pro is compatible with other sound equipment you may already possess, such as mixers. Like the standard Alias, it features a shock mount on the desk stand, and it's compatible with Sonar.

The Alias is now available for £179.99/€199.99, while the Alias Pro goes for £319.99/€349.99.

AVerMedia's latest microphone sets itself apart from the rest of the market as the world's first USB condenser microphone custom-tuned by DIRAC. The new AM350 aims to set “a new standard in audio recording”, empowering creators.

For those who don't know, DIRAC is an audio specialist company formed in the early 2000s. The company has its own patented audio tuning algorithms, intended to improve both home and professional audio solutions, from speakers and headsets to microphones.

The AVerMedia AM350 utilises the DIRAC technology, allowing for the capture of highly detailed audio. Typically, USB microphones suffer in quality compared to their XLR counterparts, so it will be interesting to see if the AM350 can close that gap.

The advanced audio clipping technology of the AM350 allows users to freely express their voice during energetic talking and powerful singing, resulting in distortion-free performances. If the noise reduction works well enough, you'll save time on recordings and post-production time, as you won't have to spend as much time ‘cleaning up' the audio.

The AM350 features a dual microphone pickup pattern design, offering both cardioid and omnidirectional modes. There is a headphone port on the microphone, so you can get zero-latency monitoring. The microphone also saves your most recent audio settings, so once you have it set up to your liking, you won't have to readjust it for future recordings.

Speaking of adjustments, the AM350 is paired with VibeEngine software, so you can customise voice settings. You'll also be able to choose between four DIRAC presets, based on whether you are recording a chat, an instrument, broadcasting live, or singing.

The AM350 USB microphone is available starting this week for $199.99. A combo deal including the microphone, shock mount and pop filter is also available at that price for a limited time. Currently, this is only available via Amazon US, but we'll keep an eye out for UK availability and pricing.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: On paper, the AM350 sounds like a good pickup. Are any of you currently considering getting a separate microphone for gaming or creative projects?

NZXT is expanding its peripheral lineup today with two new additions. If you are after a more compact dedicated microphone setup for gaming, streaming or recording, then you'll want to take a look at the new Capsule Mini and Boom Arm Mini.

The Capsule Mini caters to those who require a compact USB microphone for their setup. The Capsule is tuned to enhance speech in gaming environments, using analogue-to-digital audio with 24-bit/48KHz resolution. It uses a unidirectional polar cardioid pattern, so it should be able to block out mouse clicks and keyboard clacking.

The Capsule Mini comes with a little stock desk stand, but if you'd rather lift the mic up off of the desk, then you can also find the Boom Arm Mini, offering a smaller and more manageable boom arm option compared to most standard full-size offerings. It isn't as long as a traditional arm, making this ideal for smaller desk setups where space management is of importance.

The NZXT Capsule Mini microphone and the Boom Arm Mini will be available soon, priced at £59.99 each. The microphone is available in black and white colour options, while the boom arm is only available in black.

KitGuru Says: As someone with a bit of a cramped desk, this looks like an excellent option for saving space compared to a full-size mic and boom arm setup. Now we'll have to wait and see reviews to see how well it all works together.

Joby has been known amongst content creators for years thanks to the Gorillapod, one of the most popular flexible tripods for filming IRL content. Now, Joby is expanding from camera accessories and into the audio market, with a full range of new microphones to suit every budget.

As always, great video needs to be accompanied by great audio. With that in mind, Joby is introducing all-new pro audio gear, including a range of Wavo microphones for different use cases, and prices starting at under £70.

At the entry level we have the Wavo Lav PRO and the Wavo POD, costing £68.95 and £85.95 respectively. The former is a lavalier microphone, a highly sensitive mic with a very small footprint, protected by a a foam windscreen to remove vocal plosives or soft wind. The Wavo Lav PRO comes equipped with a 2.5m long cable, so you'll have no problem routing it and attaching it to yourself.

The Wavo POD on the other hand is a USB condenser microphone, utilising USB Type-C and offering both cardioid and omnidirectional pickup patterns. As you would expect, the microphone supports microphone stands, so you can remove the base and raise the microphone up from your desk for better audio.

From here, we get into Joby's high-end offerings, starting with the Wavo AIR, priced at £214.95. This is a wireless microphone kit, packing two lav mics for hands-free audio capture using a smartphone, or a camera using TRS and TRRS cables. The kit also comes with two transmitters, making them suitable for conducting interviews. In terms of wireless range, the Wavo Air is impressive, offering up to 50 meters of range, so you can record audio far from the camera to enrich video content.

The final two products in the lineup include the Wavo PRO DS, which will be available starting on the 4th of March for £228.95, and the Wavo PRO, which costs £257.95.

Starting off with the Wavo PRO DS, this is a shotgun microphone, sharing many components with Joby's flagship microphone, the Wavo PRO. The mic uses a seamless plug-and-play interface, a high-pass filter to clean sound and remove unwanted low frequencies while recording, integrated LEDs for battery and audio level monitoring and an onboard safe track for mono or dual channel recording.

The Wavo PRO naturally does everything the DS does but with a few extras baked in, including an intelligent hybrid analog/digital system to power active noise reduction, and Rycote technology to process and clear sounds made during on-the-go recording, like knocks against the microphone. Through an iOS or Android device, users can manage settings and monitor audio recording in real-time on their smartphone.

KitGuru Says: Joby's new line-up of Wavo microphones looks to be worth a look for all kinds of content creators, from those filming voice over at home to those conducting interviews to those filming bigger projects out in the wild.

Noise-cancellation products can come in many varieties, either in the form of software, headphones or microphones. Now ASUS has announced its latest addition to noise-cancelling microphone technology – known as AI Mic.

It is significantly more expensive than the Seiren X, but the LED display is certainly one of a kind.

If you are shopping around for some last minute gaming gear over the Christmas season, then AVerMedia is happy to oblige. Starting from today until the 29th of December, there are some big discounts on gameplay streaming and capture hardware.

The sale is taking place via Amazon UK this time around, with these prices being available for a limited time. Price cuts have been applied to the AVerMedia GC553 Live Gamer ULTRA, which is currently £40 off, bringing the price down to £159.99 for a 4K/60Hz capture card for consoles and PC.

For £139.90, you can get the GC513 Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus instead, which captures in 1080p/60 but includes a 4K pass through so you can still play games at full quality. The Live Gamer Portable also includes a PC-free recording mode, so you can record your footage straight to an SD Card and transfer it over later.

The GC311 Live Gamer MINI is the next capture device on sale, coming in at £99.90. This device offers 1080p/60 capture in H.264 format. It also offers low latency and compatibility with all current-gen consoles as well as mobile devices.

Finally, for the gameplay commentators and streamers out there, the AVerMedia AM310 USB microphone is also on sale for £59.90. This is a cardioid condenser microphone, making it a nice, cheaper alternative to something like the Blue Yeti. Since it is all powered via USB, it is compatible with macOS, Linux and Windows with no special software required to get started.

KitGuru Says: AVerMedia has released some good hardware over the course of 2019. Are any of you thinking about picking one of these up during the sale?

Blue microphones have been hugely popular over the years, particularly the Blue Yeti, which garnered plenty of praise and is still widely used by streamers and YouTubers. This week, Blue is introducing the Yeti X, an upgraded professional USB microphone complete with Blue's new VO!CE software to get the most out of it.

The Yeti X is a USB microphone rather than XLR, removing the need for a mixer or an amp and allowing users to simply plug in and be ready to go. Similarly to the original Yeti, the Yeti X is primarily aimed at streamers, content creators or podcasters, although the microphone will also serve you well for gaming sessions over Discord.

One of the biggest things here is the inclusion of Blue VO!CE technology, which gives users professional vocal effects and custom presets to adjust how they sound. The software also includes important tools like EQ, compression, de-esser, noise gate, limiter and more.

The microphone itself has a four capsule condenser array for picking up audio and an LED meter to provide a visual on vocal levels for monitoring. Similarly to the original Yeti, the X also has four pick-up pattern modes for audio, so you can choose between Cardioid, Omni-directional and bidirectional recording.

The Blue Yeti X is going to be available starting in October 2019. We don't have UK pricing just yet but over in the US, it will have an MSRP of $169.99.

KitGuru Says: I still use a Blue Yeti which has served me well over the years. Are any of you currently thinking about picking up a dedicated microphone? Would you consider the Yeti X?

AVerMedia has been around for quite a while, providing different ranges of products mainly targeted at content creators. Aiming to compete directly with Elgato, AVerMedia launched its 4K capable, HDR compatible PCI-express capture card that is priced at £249.95. Alongside our review of the GC573 Live Gamer 4K HDR Capture Card, we also take a look at the Live Streamer Mic 133 as well. This unidirectional condenser microphone has an MSRP of £69.99 and has DSLR, Android/iOS, and Mac/PC compatibility.

  • Quickstart guide
  • Cyberlink Powerdirector 15 product key card (4K Video editing software)

Installation of the GC573 capture card was incredibly easy to do, all it took was for me to locate a empty PCI-e slot in my motherboard, slot the card into its place, and then screw it down. I've always personally preferred having the PCI-e versions of capture cards as it removes the annoying mess of wires and keeps your setup clean looking as the HDMI ports are located at the back of the case anyway.

Software installation was pretty simple too. At first the card didn't seem to register – but after installing the AVerMedia Assist Central software I was able to download the much needed drivers and the RECentral software for the capture card. After this, my PC recognised it and vice versa, allowing me to see the device in the RECentral software.

Actually using the software to record the games from my PS4 Pro was rather delightful. I felt having the option to turn on the HDR recording for games that allowed it was pretty amazing, and having that feature built in to the capture card is fantastic. It definitely changes the way you look at your current games, as you can get more stunning, immersive visuals while playing. I never realised how comparatively dull Red Dead Redemption 2 looked on PS4 Pro, even with it being ‘enhanced,' but turning on that HDR option was breathtaking.

Another pretty cool thing the RECentral software allows you to do is actually change the codecs when recording or streaming – so instead of using the presets, you can adjust the FPS, Video Bitrate, whether you want it to record from CPU processing or the recommended Nvidia graphics cards, so you don't have to be stuck with what it thinks is best.

The gameplay capture while using the card looked and felt rather nice and fluid with all the settings I had chosen, whether it was 1080p/30fps, 1080p/60fps or 4K. It was just unfortunate that I couldn't really get the full capability out of this card, due to not having a 144Hz/240Hz monitor, while the PS4 Pro generally caps the frame rate in a lot of games, too.

You can buy the AVerMedia GC573 4K HDR Live Gamer Capture Card from Overclockers UK for £249.95 HERE

Pros:

  • Super easy installation.
  • Beautiful HDR compatibility.
  • RECentral can be used as a streaming platform.
  • 4K60fps support.
  • Full HD, high frame rate capture up to 240fps.
  • Lighting customisation.

Cons:

  • A little expensive.
  • RECentral is a little bit slow when changing settings.

KitGuru says: This card is definitely one to think about getting, especially if you have the compatible equipment making sure you get the most out of the experience. Not only for the FPS sides of things, but mainly for that HDR feature. That alone makes this capture card a great option.

The post Asus ROG Strix Magnus AURA – USB condenser gaming microphone first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Rode or Blue? Two well known manufacturers of desk microphones that ASUS are targeting with their Republic Of Gamers Strix Magnus USB condenser gaming microphone. At £199.99 it is a significant investment, but can the features and sound quality justify the spend? That is what we aim to find out today.

The Asus Aura feature supports up to 16.8 million different colour options which means hitting that exact colour match is possible, if a little time consuming. You can't really complain about the lack of variety or unique custom lights.

The microphone incorporates three individual 14mm condenser capsules which point in different directions to make full use of the three main recording modes. As mentioned in the title of this review it is aimed to the Gamer and content creator / Streamer.

  • Cardioid – Records from the front and is used for the solo streamer.
  • Stereo mode – to detect multiple voices from different angles.
  • ENC Mode – (environmental noise cancelling) this helps to prevent the Microphone recording mouse and keyboard clicks (and other background noise).

After using these three modes I can try to give you the run down on the positive and negatives of each.

Cardioid mode – with the adjustable microphone option this really is ideal for the streamer and I can see this being the main mode for most of the buying public. It is crystal clear when the microphone is positioned in front of you within the first metre or two.

Stereo mode I felt gave off an accurate representation of where two people would be in a room and allowed the streamers to position themselves and end up in either the left or right of the stereo field. Which when listening back to is quite a pleasant viewing experience.

ENC mode really didn't seem to remove a high percentage of background noise such as keyboard clicks. Yes it does mask some of the clicks but there are noticeable reductions in the quality of overall voice presentation. On play back you can notice changes as it restricts some audio waves that a human voice will produce.

Asus wanted to give you a high quality beefy sized braided cable but the 1.5m length is quite restricted. They offer the 5/8 microphone stand adaptor which can be attached to the bottom of the Magnus but I really couldn't find a space close enough to my desk to use it.

I can see it working fine with a desk clamp microphone stand. Honestly I was more than happy to just leave the microphone placed on my desk in front of my monitors as the size didn't restrict my view at all. Its very unobtrusive which earns it a bonus point – I am used to microphones taking up a lot of desk space.

I can say that the only issue will be vibration related noise interference as it is sensitive enough to pick up randomly generated movement noises such as elbows hitting off a desk.

Comparing this to the Blue Yeti is something I was very lucky to be able to do as I actually own one. After five years of ownership and all my good experience with it i could easily make the switch over to the Asus ROG Strix Magnus. I used to attend LAN events and would bring my equipment with me. I have never been a fan of the ‘microphone and headset combo' so from day one i have had a wireless headset. This was simply because the cables used to rub on my neck or get in the way when gaming.

I have loved the idea of having a separate microphone but my current USB microphone is really not designed for portability. The lightweight Magnus can be packed up within seconds as there is just a cable connecting it to the PC. It weighs about the same as an Xbox controller, so bonus points for that.

Closing Thoughts

The Asus ROG Strix Magnus really does satisfy my demands and requirements as a content creator and streamer, but I am really trying not to get too excited by it and look at the big picture – what reasons are there to buy it, or not to buy it?

Before I go any further there seems to be some confusion over UK pricing – we heard it will cost around the £120 mark, but Overclockers UK currently have it listed at £199.99 on pre order – which we would like to hope is a pricing glitch. We have emailed ASUS about this on Sunday and they confirmed the pricing should be around the £120 mark.

So at £119.99 the price is cheaper than the Rode NT-USB which costs around £145, but the Strix Magnus is the same price as the Blue Yeti. On that note alone Asus have positioned themselves well as it incorporates many aesthetically pleasing features that close competitors don't offer.

If you already have Asus Aura products in a system build then the RGB Strix Magnus is likely to appeal to you. We feel it looks like a weapon the transformers would carry around — the sharp edges give it a sports car feel and there is no doubt it catches the eye from every angle.

EDIT 30th May: After much confusion with ASUS reps the price has moved from £119.99 to £199.99 to £169.99. We can't keep track of how many times the price seems to have changed so don't blame us if its changed again!

The Asus ROG Strix Magnus is a winning product – it is built to very high standards and offers three modes to target specific audience members. The audio quality is first class and the ease to setup will appeal to a less tech savvy audience. It is also extremely portable meaning it will be ideal for LAN parties and big events when you don't want to compromise on audio quality.

The only thing ASUS need to address is the short cable they supply. It might not affect everyone but if you like to use a long dedicated mic stand, the 1.5 meter cable may not be long enough. I hope in future revisions ASUS supply an extension cable, or just supply a high grade braided cable at twice the length.

Discuss on our Facebook page, over HERE.

Pros

  • Portability.
  • Carry Case.
  • Thick Braided Cable.
  • Asus Aura RGB LED.
  • 1/4inch camera mounting.
  • Noise Cancelling feature.
  • Small and Very Lightweight.

Cons

  • Distorts your voice slightly at times (Using ENC mode).
  • Cable Length too short.
  • LED lighting behind the microphone.
  • No anti-vibration stand.

Kitguru says: The Asus ROG Strix Magnus is a fantastic, high grade microphone suited to a variety of tasks. Sound quality is killer, and it is immensely portable and easy to set up.

The G4ME Zero features a closed-cup design which is much more popular among gaming headset manufacturers than the open acoustic design that features of the G4ME One. We will discuss the performance implications of this design decision later on in the review.

Headsets are an integral part of any gamers arsenal, and the competition has been fierce in 2012. CM Storm have already produced an impressive gaming headset the CM Storm Sirus 5.1. It even seems the company have improved on a few things we didn't like, as the new CM Storm Sonuz is said to be lightweight and features larger ear pads.

Unfortunately, the CM Storm Sonuz doesn't support native surround sound and several of the Sirus key features, but it does boast larger 53mm drivers, which could improve sound quality. Additionally, the Sonuz is targeted at a much wider audience, being half the price of the Sirus.
