Microsoft has been in desperate need of a re-design for its Windows 10 Store app for years and now, it looks like the big overhaul is finally happening. According to sources this week, Microsoft is working on a new version of the Store with fewer limitations, allowing a broader range of apps to be added to it.

As reported by Windows Central, a more developer-friendly version of the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 is on the way. Some changes will include allowing developers to upload unpackaged Win32 apps, as well as allowing developers to host their apps and updates via their own Content Delivery Network (CDN).

.

These new policies would allow some of the most popular apps to be available on the new Microsoft store app, including Steam, Chrome, Firefox, Epic Games Store, Discord, Battle.net, and many more. Moreover, Microsoft would finally add some of their best apps to the store, such as the new Edge browser, Visual Studio, and Teams.

The new app should follow the design theme of the upcoming Windows 10 UI refresh. Expect to see new icons, minimalistic layouts, and new animations. The report further suggests that the app will be updated monthly with new features and fixes. Large downloads and installations should also become easier to handle.

The Microsoft Store has become a good source of leaks over the last year. This time around, an early listing revealed Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy, indicating that we're getting a re-release of the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy soon.

The listing was eventually removed, but not quickly enough to keep the leak quiet. The Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy is supposed to be releasing on the 18th of March.

This is likely a re-release for current-gen consoles and possibly PC, rather than a set of remasters. Still, we may see some enhancements in place for next-gen consoles, like higher resolution and a 60 frames per second mode.

As you would expect, the trilogy includes all DLC released for the games. The Tomb Raider reboot journey will then continue in the form of a Netflix-produced animated series. Currently, there is no word on when we might see the next Tomb Raider game.

Recently, Ubisoft announced that Far Cry 6 would no longer be coming out in February 2021 and would instead release later in the year. A specific new release date has not been announced, but Microsoft may have accidentally confirmed the new date already.

On the Microsoft Store, the listing for Far Cry 6 has been updated with a new release date – May 25th 2021.

This lines up with Ubisoft's recent earnings call, during which the publisher told investors that Far Cry 6 would no longer be releasing in the current fiscal year, but that it would arrive within the April 2021-March 2022 period.

This new release date would mean that Far Cry 6 was only delayed by three months. Of course, we do need to await confirmation from Ubisoft before getting our hopes up.

KitGuru Says: It looks like Far Cry 6 will still be coming in the first half of 2021 for PC, current-gen and next-gen consoles. Are many of you looking forward to the next Far Cry game?

At this point, Microsoft has already committed to bringing all first-party games to Windows 10 in addition to Xbox. Unfortunately, the Windows Store just isn't up to scratch, leading many to ignore some of Microsoft's biggest PC titles. During XO18, Phil Spencer touched on PC support a little bit by committing to fixing the Windows Store.

Previously, the Windows/Microsoft Store was handled by the Windows team and Spencer didn't have much control over it. However, he has since been promoted to overseeing all of Microsoft's gaming efforts, giving him a much larger leadership role in the company. Phil Spencer will now be using that to take the store in a new direction.

While speaking with XO18 presenter, Julia Hardy, Phil Spencer spoke about listening to fan feedback, a common sentiment from Microsoft this generation. Afterwards, he specifically started addressing Windows, saying: ““I think we’ve got a ton of work to do on Windows. Windows is something I’m very committed to, I’ve heard the feedback about our Store. I’m going to take a bigger leadership role on what’s going on with the Windows Store, make it really tailored to the gamers that we know want to see the best from what we have to offer.”

Hopefully we'll start to see those improvements very soon, particularly since Microsoft now has a stacked deck of talented studios, all of which will be releasing games for PC and Xbox.

KitGuru Says: We know that Microsoft wants to bring Game Pass to PC and catch us up on some older exclusives like Sunset Overdrive. Hopefully all of this will arrive alongside a big update to finally clean the store up. Have many of you used the Windows Store recently? Has it given you much trouble? I remember having a very difficult time getting Gears 4 to install at launch.

At present Microsoft Corp. only sells applications with Metro-style “modern” interface in its Windows Store, possibly to ensure that all the apps it sells are optimized for both PCs and tablets. However, starting next year the company will change alter its policy and will start sales of apps that do not feature modern user interface.

“The Windows Store will also support more than just modern apps,” said Oliver Niehus, a software developer at Microsoft in a blog post that has been removed, reports Neowin. “It will add desktop apps, as well as other types of digital content. We will provide many different ways to pay for apps. And we'll provide an organization store within the public Windows Store, where an org can place their own curated list of public apps as well as specific line-of-business apps that their employees need.”

The move will make Microsoft’s Windows Store a considerably better place to get various kinds of software. Moreover, Microsoft likely plans to add music, videos and other content to its store, which will make it comparable to Apple’s iTunes and Google’s Play stores.

It is expected that the new Windows Store will be launched along with the Windows 10 operating system in the first half of 2015.

KitGuru Says: It looks like Microsoft wants to be considerably more flexible with its Windows 10 that it was with its Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Such flexibility – along with return of Start Menu and other improvements in Windows 10 – should help the new OS to get more popular than Windows 8, which has been criticized for the lack of Start Menu, Metro interface and a number of other things.
