Recently, Microsoft announced two new studio acquisitions- Obsidian and InXile. Obsidian wasn't much of a surprise, as various leaks and rumours had pointed towards this for a while. However, nobody saw InXile as a potential suitor. It came as a shock to many fans of Wasteland and the studio's traditional CRPG approach. Now that things have settled a bit, InXile head, Brian Fargo, has begun discussing the impact this will have on the studio going forward.

Speaking with Eurogamer in an interview this week, Fargo revealed that Microsoft initially approached InXile back in April, so this deal has been in the works for quite some time. Before being picked up by Microsoft, InXile was surviving with around 70 full-time team members, with around 15 contractors that would do some regular work for the studio. Now that InXile is part of Microsoft's first party, the team will be growing by roughly 30 percent, allowing Fargo to fill in any missing gaps, such as a full time cinematics expert, a full time audio expert, new developers that specialise in lighting etc.

WIth Microsoft's backing, InXile won't have to turn to crowdfunding to get projects off the ground anymore, which is good news. Back in 2012, a studio could get away with raising around $3 million on Kickstarter and then selling additional units once the game was finished. Nowadays though, Fargo says that walking the line between double-A and Triple-A is more expensive than ever. Fargo initially planned to retire after shipping Wasteland 3 next year but now that money troubles are less of an issue, he will be sticking around for the long haul.

Time and resources are the most important aspects of this acquisition. Beyond that, Fargo is positive that Microsoft will continue to grant InXile its own creative freedom as a self-sustaining studio. There are multiple small teams within InXile working on different projects, many are chipping away at Wasteland 3, while others are focussing on bringing The Bards Tale 4 to console. Others are working on a new, unannounced project, which played a role in getting Microsoft interested in picking InXile up.

The full interview is well worth a read, but from the sounds of it, InXile will continue to operate as usual. The teams will remain small to medium sized, with tight-knit groups working on different projects.

KitGuru Says: InXile was a surprising, if not shocking pick-up for Microsoft. It will certainly be interesting to see what the studio does following on from Wasteland 3.

It has been a few months since Microsoft first formed ‘The Initiative', an ambitious first-party studio aiming to produce new, high-quality games for Xbox and PC. We've seen a wave of hires already, including top talent from other acclaimed studios. Now, The Initiative has added another big name to its roster- Tom Shepherd, who previously acted as the Technical Director for Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3 and Grand Theft Auto V.

The Initiative has been looking to fill important positions at the studio since June. As Windows Central reports, Shepherd's position hasn't been publicly confirmed yet but given his past experience, it would appear that he will be filling in the Technical Director role once again. Prior to joining Microsoft's studio, Shepherd worked at Rockstar for 11 years, helping on franchises including Midnight Club, Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne and Red Dead Redemption.

The Initiative has been recruiting plenty of talent from other areas of the industry too. This includes Brian Westergaard, who was a Lead Producer on Rise of the Tomb Raider and Senior Managing Producer on Sony’s most recent God of War game. The studio has also picked up Christian Cantamessa, who previously worked as the lead writer and designer on Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption. He also contributed his writing skills to WB’s Shadow of War.

Daniel Neuburger joined the studio earlier this year after co-directing the Tomb Raider 2013 reboot and its sequel. Other hires were Blake Fischer (Microsoft Director of Portfolio Planning), and Annie Lohr (recruiter at Treyarch, Riot, Respawn, EA).

We don't have any clues as to what game this studio will be making but chances are, it will be a new IP. Hiring is still going ahead, so it could be a few years before we see the first game announced.

KitGuru Says: The Initiative is reeling in talent from some of the most critically acclaimed studios of this generation, which is quite exciting. The studio will likely be focussing its efforts on a next-gen game, but hopefully we'll learn more about their game once the next Xbox is ready to be announced.

We've known since the start of the year that Microsoft Studio, Playground Games, has been working on a big RPG project. Currently, the rumour is that this will be a revival of the Fable franchise, in an open-world setting with a big focus on the single-player story. Now, the UK-based studio has begun expanding, hiring a wave of top talent to help develop the game.

Playground Games currently spearheads the Forza Horizon series for Microsoft. However, a second studio has been set up to work on this new RPG project. In the latest wave of hires, Playground added recruits from BioWare, Rocksteady, Ninja Theory, Guerrilla Games and EA. All of them will be working with Playground on this new open-world RPG.

Gamesindustry.biz gave a full rundown of the latest hires, starting with Scotty Brown, who was previously an environmental artist for EA Motive. Brown will be working alongside lead environment artist, Noel Lukasewich, who spent 13 years at BioWare working on Mass Effect.

Martin Lancaster from Rocksteady Studios will be acting as the narrative director on Playground's RPG. Chris Goodall will be acting as principal animator, he is coming over from Ninja Theory after working on Hellblade, DmC: Devil May Cry and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Joe McKernan will act as the UI designer for the game, after spending four years working on Horizon Zero Dawn at Guerilla Games and on Destiny 2 at Bungie.

Finally, the QA team has also expanded with Rob den Dekker, who will be the lead technician on the project. Previously, he has worked at Lionhead on Fable 1 and 2.

Phil Spencer teased that Playground Games is working on a big new project during its E3 press conference in June. While we already have solid rumours indicating that this will be a new Fable game, nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

KitGuru Says: I've been a big fan of the Forza Horizon series and from the sounds of it, Playground is putting together a solid team for its first foray into the open-world RPG genre.

Last year, we saw a huge rise in the number of Triple A games utilising loot boxes to make extra money. Two of the biggest examples were Battlefront 2 and Middle Earth: Shadow of War, both of which ended up removing those microtransactions. Now, Microsoft's Turn 10 Studio will be going down a similar path, with loot boxes set to disappear from Forza 7.

In a post today on the official Turn 10 website, Studio head, Alan Hartman, confirmed that the studio will be taking a step back from microtransactions as “players' expectations of games and their experiences have changed”. This will start with the removal of loot boxes from Forza 7 later this year.

In another player-friendly move, paid ‘Forza tokens' will not become a part of Forza 7 and will be avoided in Forza Horizon 4, which comes out in October.

It will take some time for loot boxes to be removed from Forza 7 as so many in-game items were attached to them. However, by the end of the year, they should be gone and we likely won't be seeing them at all in Forza Horizon 4.

KitGuru Says: While I don't really play the mainline Forza games, I do enjoy Horizon quite a bit. With that in mind, I'm glad to see Microsoft's studios going back to focussing on making great gameplay without worrying about additional microtransactions or odd gimmicks like prize crates. Do many of you play Forza? What do you think of this latest move?

The post Microsoft’s biggest E3 announcement was an investment in the future first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Microsoft's Xbox team has been in a tight position over the last couple of years. Sony has been doing tremendously well with high quality PS4 exclusives and so far, while Microsoft has been unable to answer back with anything of its own outside of the usual Forza/Halo/Gears releases. Fortunately, for the first time this generation, things seem to finally be looking up for Xbox, in large part due to a huge investment in new first-party studios.

Microsoft has been making promises to do better at various intervals since Phil Spencer first took over, but now, it looks like Xbox finally has the tools at hand to deliver. While much of this year's Xbox conference was still focused on third-party announcements, there is a storm of first-party content brewing, as Microsoft has added five new studios to its first-party lineup.

For starters, Microsoft is forming a brand new games studio over in the US known as ‘The Initiative'. This studio will be headed up by Darrell Gallagher, who was one of the leaders behind the Tomb Raider 2013 reboot, and its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider. Microsoft has also acquired Undead Labs (State of Decay) and Playground Games (Forza Horizon), that last one is very significant, as it is rumoured that they are also working on an open-world Fable reboot.

While Undead Labs and Playground Games were obvious acquisitions for Microsoft, two much more surprising studios were also picked up. Compulsion Games is now a Microsoft Studio, this team has been working on We Happy Few since Kickstarting the game, and while its original focus was to be a survival game, it has since been reworked to focus more on story.

The biggest acquisition of them all however, has to be Ninja Theory. Despite having a close relationship with Sony for Heavenly Sword on the PS3 and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice being a PS4 timed console exclusive, Ninja Theory has now joined Microsoft's ranks. Hellblade was a fantastic story-driven action game, and with the backing of Microsoft, that studio will be able to create bigger and better games going forward.

All of this is incredibly exciting news both for Xbox and PC gamers. There has been a growing feeling that the Xbox has been ‘coasting' so far this generation, but it looks like Microsoft is ready to take gaming seriously again, with big investments in future IP. However, while this is good news, it is far from being an overnight fix, so lets temper some expectations.

Many of these acquisitions are very recent, and in the case of Compulsion Games, their future Microsoft exclusive work will need to be put on hold while development wraps up on We Happy Few, which will still be a multiplatform release published by Gearbox. Microsoft isn't ready to even say the word ‘Fable' out loud, so that game is still a few years out and The Initiative is still in the hiring phase. Undead Labs only just released State of Decay 2, so their next game will also be some ways off. Ninja Theory could potentially be the furthest along with a new project, as the studio has been very quiet since launching Hellblade almost a year ago.

While we wait for these five new studios to get the wheels turning, Microsoft does have some promising games for next year. In 2019, we'll see the releases of Crackdown 3, Battle Toads and Gears of War 5. Halo Infinite may even see the light of day in 2020.

It has been frustrating waiting for Microsoft to pull some new exclusives out of the bag, and while there will still be a bit of a wait ahead, the future is looking brighter than ever. With all of these extra studios now under Microsoft's belt, I think we can reasonably expect at least two exclusives a year from 2020 onward, if not three. If one project is falling behind schedule (Crackdown 3, Scalebound), then Microsoft now has the fire power to ensure that there is something else on the way to pick up the slack.

The best part is, all of these future games will also be heading to the PC, so Microsoft has its bases covered on both fronts.

KitGuru Says: As much as I enjoyed seeing Spider-Man gameplay at Sony's conference, and Smash Bros at Nintendo, Microsoft's conference this year had me the most excited by far. A lot of games were third-party, but that shouldn't detract from the fact that it was a solid show all around. Exclusives are coming, it will take time, but it looks like Microsoft has found its fighting spirit again.

Age of Empires 2 has seen a bit of a resurgence this year. A few months back, Microsoft announced that Age of Empires 2 HD Edition would be getting a new expansion known as ‘The African Kingdoms' and now, that content is dropping tomorrow. As we knew from the announcement in April, Microsoft bought some outside help in for this release, calling on the team of modders behind the unofficial Forgotten Empires expansion.

A new teaser for The African Kingdoms expansion was posed to the Forgotten Empires YouTube channel this week:

Age of Empires 2

Microsoft has also launched a new mod manager Age of Empires 2, which should help those looking to install lots of workshop content. Some improvements to the multiplayer experience are also due to be made at some point. The new expansion launches tomorrow on the 5th of November, though we don't know if it will be free or a paid for expansion. If enough interest is generated then maybe we will see Microsoft start work on Age of Empires IV.

Microsoft Studios also recently revived Age of Mythology, which is 13 years old at this point. A new expansion is also arriving for that RTS.

KitGuru Says: I used to be a big fan of Age of Empires 2, I still play it from time to time now. However, I do wonder if people would rather see a totally new entry to the series, rather than an expansion to one of the older games in the series. Do any of you still play Age of Empires? Will you be trying out the new expansion?

These two studios have worked on Age of Mythology: The Extended Edition, which comes with the first game and the Titan expansion. They also worked on Age of Empires 2: HD Edition.

This all comes a few months after the announcement of a new Age of Empires 2 expansion, which was revealed back in April. Microsoft Studios did publish both Age of Empires and Age of Mythology, so it seems that the company is on a bit of an RTS resurgence scheme at the moment.

Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon will have a gameplay reveal on the 2nd of October during a livestream over on Twitch, so we will find out more then.

Following on from news that Xbox has a new boss, Phil Spencer, with plans to merge multiple departments together, including Microsoft Studios, the game development arm of the software giant is being hit by layoffs, with several staffers posting confirmation on Twitter; some of them, with links to their new Kickstarters.

While the fact that Microsoft Studios is being merged with the other Xbox divisions seems like a bit of a strong coincidence, Microsoft's statement on the matter seems to explain away the firings as more to do with working on new projects and moving in new directions.

“At Xbox, our goal is to constantly create new fun, social and interactive entertainment experiences,” it said in a statement (via VG247). “As part of our commitment to this goal, we are always evaluating our development priorities, and there are times when decisions need to be made to realign plans and refocus our efforts.

“Microsoft Studios continues to grow as an overall organization as we focus and invest in key priority areas that will drive future profitable growth.”

Some ex-staffers, like Patrick Loughman and Elbert Perez hit up their twitter with confirmation of their lay off, the former proclaiming his joy at being “free,” of the place, “while the latter linked followers to his new Kickstarter.

KitGuru Says: At least some are landing on their feet. Good luck to those that find themselves out of a job this morning.

Satya Nadella, the newly appointed chief executive officer of Microsoft Corp., continues to re-appoint executives in an attempt to create an efficient executive team at the software giant. In addition to the new team, we are starting to see changes that Mr. Nadella wants to bring to Microsoft. For example, the new head of Xbox division seems to think about video games beyond the console and across the whole Microsoft.

“I am incredibly proud of the talented Xbox employees around the world and believe, like they do, in the power of technology to bring games and entertainment to life across console, PC, tablet and mobile devices,” said Phil Spencer, the new head of Xbox division, in a statement. “It has been a remarkable year for Xbox and I am honored to lead the team at this incredible time for Microsoft and the games industry.”

microsoft_xbox_phil_spencer

It is also noteworthy that Mr. Spencer will report to Terry Myerson, allowing Microsoft to keep gaming close to the group developing operating systems across devices.

Originally, Xbox was clearly considered as a gaming/living room business of Microsoft. Over time, Microsoft introduced various new services, which are available not only on Xbox, but on other platforms as well. For example, Xbox Live, Xbox Music and Xbox Video can be used on a variety of devices. Apparently, that’s not all and going forward the integration of Xbox technologies into other platforms will only continue.

“Combining all our software, gaming and content assets across the Xbox team under a single leader and aligning with the OSG team will help ensure we continue to do great work across the Xbox business, and bring more of the magic of Xbox to all form factors, including tablets, PCs and phones,” said Satya Nadella, the chief exec of Microsoft.

microsoft_xbox_one_7

Earlier this year Microsoft executives already implied on renewed focus on video games in general and on video games for PCs in particular, but without elaborating. With the announcement of DirectX 12 for PCs, mobile devices and Xbox One, it looks like Microsoft may unify at least certain games across all of its platforms.

Obviously, exclusive titles for Xbox One will continue to exist, otherwise it will make no sense to make it and buy it. However, it looks like Microsoft wants to make Xbox much like Sony’s PlayStation division, which offers a lot of thing beyond the console for the living room. Moreover, Microsoft clearly needs a better approach to mobile gaming platforms, which are behind not only Apple iOS or Google Android, but to a large degree Sony’s PlayStation Portable/PlayStation Vita.

KitGuru Says: It remains to be seen what exactly will be done by Microsoft and how it will improve video games in general.
