Way back in 2013, Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune set out to crowdfund a spiritual successor to the series in the form of Mighty No.9. The game was one of the first huge Kickstarter successes with over $3.8 million raised and while the game was initially due out pretty soon, it has now been delayed again.

Today, the team behind Mighty No.9 said that: “In preparation for the February release of Mighty No. 9 we have been working hard with our partners to resolve any network issues and porting work necessary to publish Mighty No. 9 on the various platforms. However, the issues relating to the network modes were more critical than expected, and it has become apparent that we will need to delay the game from its February 9th release date.”

“The reason for the delay is rooted in bugs inside the network modes, and specifically problems with matchmaking. There are two large reasons for this problem, one of them being the large number of platforms supported (the solution for each platform is slightly different) and the other stems from the fact that the engine we are using is no longer being updated which means adjustments for matchmaking and online code are being made manually”.

Those are some pretty major issues so it is easy to see why the game needed another delay. However, this isn't the first time the game has been delayed, the game was initially supposed to come out in April 2015 so backers have been left disappointed.

KitGuru Says: Mighty No.9 has gone through its share of controversies, even after raising much more than its initial funding goal the game went back for two more rounds of crowdfunding. The game has then been hit with multiple delays which has hurt fan confidence in the project a bit. Hopefully, the game will actually manage to make its Spring release date this time.

Mighty No. 9 is one of the more widely known Kickstarter success stories but so far, a release date had not been set for the game, which managed to raise $3.8 million during its initial crowd funding run. Now we know that the game is set to release on a wide range of platforms on the 18th of September.

We also know that physical copies are going to be made and Deep Silver will be publishing the game. The game will initially launch for the PC, Mac, Linux, Wii U, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. A PS Vita and a Nintendo 3DS version of the game will arrive later on.

In an effort to assure backers, Mighty No. 9 development studio, Comcept, explained that while Deep Silver is now on board as a publisher, the direction or creativity behind the game will not be affected. Also, those who bought the game on Kickstarter will receive a free DLC titled ‘The Ray'. Retail copy buyers will also receive this DLC but those who buy the game digitally will have to pay for it separately.

Mighty No. 9 will launch with 12 stages, a couple of extra hard difficulty modes and a New Game Plus mode for some extra replay value. There will be a single player challenge mode, a boss rush mode and some two player co-op modes allowing you to compete in speed-run races.

KitGuru Says: Mighty No. 9 has had some controversy behind it after the game attempted to get more money from backers with an additional two crowd-funding runs following the original Kickstarter pitch. However, it looks like the game is finally arriving.

Keiji Inafune is attempting to crowd fund even more content for Mighty No. 9, his spiritual successor to Megaman. The game was successfully funded on Kickstarter last year but Inafune attempted to gain more funding earlier this year by offering up more crowd funding incentives, such as an English language voice acted version of the game.

Now he is back for more, asking for $190,000 to make some DLC, despite the game already generating around $4 million and not being finished. Inafune's studio, Comcept, has announced that if it raises a further $190,000 by the end of the year, all backers will get some bonus DLC, featuring an extra level and boss.

Mighty No. 9 already has 67,000 backers and the two previous rounds of funding managed to raise around $4 million. However, seemingly in anticipation for a negative reaction to the announcement, Comcept discussed ‘potential DLC', stating:

“We want to stress that none of the developers have or would begin working in earnest on this DLC until their work is done on the Mighty No. 9 retail release”.

Here's the cost breakdown for the DLC:

Mighty No. 9 has had two successful rounds of crowd funding so far but three times might be pushing it a bit.

KitGuru Says: I was pretty amazed that Mighty No. 9 managed to hit its second round of funding, I wonder if people will be willing to buy in to it for a third time. What  do you guys think? Is three rounds of funding a bit much? Should the developer be trying to fund DLC before the main game is even finished or available?

Mighty No. 9 is coming back for a second round of crowd funding Japanese developer, Comcept has announced. Mighty No. 9 hit its funding goal last year, with 70,000 backers raising $3.8 million for the game.

The second campaign  aims to raise money for bonus content, the campaign is being run through PayPal this time. According to Comcept, it was feedback from fans that sparked this second round of funding.

So far only one stretch goal has been announced, if the campaign hits $100,000 the game will receive full english voice acting. This has also re-opened pre-orders for the game, backers can pre-order a digital copy for $23.

It looks like the game will be landing on Steam Early Access at some point as the $80 pre-order bundle will give access to the pre-release version of the game in addition to a digital retro-style manual, digital art book, strategy guide and soundtrack.

There will also be a Mighty No. 9 animated series, which also needs crowd funding. Although that is being handled by Digital Frontier, the production company behind the series.

Comcept released an FAQ regarding the second round of funding which states:

“The video game we proposed in the Kickstarter campaign last year is going to be completed with all of the funding we received from backers. For this new funding campaign we are looking to add new content to the game that we did not or could not add to the stretch goals during the original funding campaign.”

KitGuru Says: It's not often that we see a successfully crowd funded project come back for round two. What do you guys think of this?

The Mighty No.9 team have also released a 13 second video showcasing some gameplay with placeholder animations, giving backers an idea of how the game is going to look and turn out.

Mighty No.9 is expected to release in 2015, updates will be provided throughout the development process. The Kickstarter will finish tonight as the most successful Japanese Kickstarter ever. If you want to contribute you'll have to do it before then (update: the campaign has now closed at $3.845 million).

One last push might reveal that last mystery box and bag those last extra couple of features.

The press team behind Mighty No. 9 also recently released figures telling us that $57.58 was the backing average and that the campaign brought in 1,700 new backers per day, making around $97,000 every 24 hours.

KitGuru Says: Mighty No. 9 is shaping up nicely, but all of these extra versions could affect release dates. I wouldn't want to see one particular port pushed back a year in order to prioritise other versions.  Have you backed Mighty No. 9?

Mighty No. 9, the spiritual successor to Megaman, just hit $2.2 million on Kickstarter. This means the game will officially head to current generation consoles including the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PC, Mac and Linux. The game will play like a retro action platformer much like Megaman did, where you can also choose the order you fight bosses to get new powers. If the project makes another $1 million then it will also come to the Xbox one and Playstation 4 too.

Mighty No. 9
The design for Mighty No. 9 retains some of the Megaman style.

Like any Kickstarter there are plenty of backing options, ranging from $5 for forum access and your name in the backer credits, all the way up to $10,000 for dinner in Tokyo with the man behind the Megaman series, Keiji Inafune. Don't assume the $10,000 backing will get you to Tokyo or a place to stay though, as these aren't included in your backing reward. If you just want to pledge for the game itself, then that will cost you $20.

Your mission during this game will be to defeat the other mighty numbers. There will also be a documentary filmed on the development of this game filmed by 2 player productions, the same company that did the documentaries on Mojang and Double Fine's Broken Age.

Concept 2

The design of Mighty No. 2 looks a lot like a Medabot.

There is no release date set yet but we probably won't see the final product until late 2014.

KitGuru Says: Mighty No. 9 is looking good. It's shaping up to be the Megaman game fans hoped for – before Capcom cancelled it again.
