When Intel updated its Core models with the Sandybridge refresh, it turned its back on highly affordable overclocking – leaving that segment exclusively to AMD. The advent of the Intel Pentium Anniversary Edition looks to bring back at least one of these low cost options to fight with AMD.

While the majority of the mainboard noise at Computex was focused on the significant Z97 market for mainstream Intel chips, Mike Yang from Asrock was busy showing the flexibility of his design team with the Z97 Anniversary boards – available in both ATX and Micro ATX.

Given that most of the Z97 boards sold will probably be around the £100 mark in the UK, how will Asrock be able to offer these for £60-75?

“We have taken away everything that is not absolutely essential”, Mike told us.

“This is a stripped down design, where cost saving was the key driver for my design team”, he explained.

Mike continued, “If it was not absolutely essential for the final design, then it comes out”.

“We've seen this done in the past with legacy options on mainboards, for example support for parallel printing or serial mouse ports”, said Mike. “Now we have applied the same logic to the Z97. It has been designed for 100% affordable overclocking”.

Early samples of the 20th anniversary processor are already yielding clocks close to 4.5GHz around the web and with an expected street price a little over £53, the combination of low cost, dual core chip and one of Asrock's stripped down Anniversary Edition Z97 boards could be tempting for those interested in Intel overclocking – but without the ~£300 normally necessary to start.

It is available in ATX and MicroATX form factors, as you can see here.

KitGuru says: It's easy to see why Intel locked off its processors from a business point of view – especially with the market's predictions for their sales figures over the next 5 years, but we still love the idea of taking a Core i3 530 to 4.4GHz and slapping the performance of a Copre i5-750 at stock. Asrock's Annniversary Edition mainboards promise a little of that flavour.

After so many years of knocking out new processors with silky smoothness using its Tick-Tock production strategy, Intel's ‘Tick-ety-Tock' mis-step on Haswell has left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. All the more reason for the market to be interested in the X99 update – rumoured to be hitting the streets in Q3. Asrock seems ready for the change.

The days when Intel enjoyed controlled launches for new products seem to be over. The spluttering stop-start around Haswell, caught a lot of people by surprise and the Z97 launch wasn't any better.

Processors are thin on the ground (although KitGuru has the latest samples being tested as we speak) and everyone is left wondering how big an issue Intel is experiencing behind the scenes to cause such disorganisation.

At times like these, PR folks look around and hope for a bit of distraction. For Intel, that distraction could well take the form of the Asrock X99 Extreme6.

In what would appear to have been the first public outing of a full-blown Intel X99 chipset mainboard at Computex 2014, Asrock is planting a flag: Telling the world that it does not intend to follow when it comes to advanced design.

When the Asrock Z87 OC Formula picked up our Technical Excellence Award for 2013, it was for a product that had become a standard addition to the advanced testing labs for memory companies across the globe. Indeed we found it handled the highest performing memory with substantial overclocking headroom available.

Taking that ability to create fast-throughout boards and then adding in new technologies like DDR4, bodes well for Asrock's X99 offers.

Asrock's Mike Yang told us that his R&D team have spent a lot of time reducing latency in the new X99 boards.

The addition of 12k capacitors, while other companies believe that 10k is high, shows you the kind of focus Asrock is giving to Haswell-E performance.

While Haswell left a lot of people cold, the promise of new high-end CPUs in Q3 – on boards like these  – has us eager for new levels of performance. We have been stimulated.

KitGuru says: Will the combination of X99 ‘Wellsburg' and Core i7 ‘Haswell-E' be enough to restore Intel's reputation for nailing processor production?  We'll have to wait and see. Having seen the level of development that the mainboard vendors have put into their new products, we have no doubt that records will be tumbling in Autumn, like leaves off a tree.

While most of the PC using population is content snoozing around with 1600MHz memory, ADATA has just moved the goal posts a little bit higher. KitGuru pulls out a stop watch to investigate.

How much is anything worth?  It's an interesting question and one that permeates every aspect of life and society.

Passion can cloud judgement and so can greed. If you are passionate about overclocking and/or greedy for the highest numbers possible in every respect, then memory that comes with 3,100MHz written on the packet is going to represent desire in its own right.

Then there's the business argument for performance. So if you have a machine that's a little quicker, then maybe more work can be done in the same period of time – and you can make the financial argument for buying the fastest thing around. This argument for PC hardware is a little like buying 99 octane fuel for your car because it is more efficient. It might be true, but secondary behind the fact that ‘faster is just cooler'.

Rich people who are crazy about cars might buy a Bugatti. If the rumours about ADATA's XPG V2 pricing are true, then we know what memory Bugatti owners will be buying

.
And so we come to ADATA's new launch: XPG V2 3,100MHz DDR3 memory in dual 4GB stick kits.

So what about the actual product features?

  • Support for Intel XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles) version 1.3
  • Support for dual channel mode
  • RoHS compliant
  • Complies with JEDEC standards
  • Uses high-quality, 8-layer printed circuit boards and aluminium heat sink, effectively reducing the memory module temperature
  • Adopts Thermal Conductive Technology (TCT) thermal technology for heat dispersal
  • Supports Intel Core processors and the latest fourth-generation Z87 platform

According to ADATA, overclocking enthusiasts who want the very best performance available – with complete stability and JEDEC compliance – should find that this memory is totally compatible with Intel’s 4th Generation Core processors and Z87 Platform.

.
So what's the secret behind this ADATA XPG V2 3,100MHz technology?

Well it seems that V2 is the result of special cooperation between ADATA and Asrock. Interesting.

When clocked to its fastest certified speed, bandwidth on these modules is 24,800MB a second, which could be interesting for professional users who put 24×7 strain on workstations running products like After Effects.

Stores like Overclockers have 4x4GB Kingston Beast 2400MHz kits around the £139 mark. One step up from there would be the 8GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 2,800MHz kits available at £199. How much will ADATA be charging for the 3,100MHz kits?

KitGuru says: If this 8GB kit comes in higher than £300, then its target market will be very narrow indeed. Then again, Bugatti  does not design Veyrons based on mass-market-appeal.
