Following the overwhelming success of Minecraft, we have seen the team at Mojang expand the IP outwards into other gaming genres. One such project was Minecraft Legends – a real-time strategy game featuring familiar Minecraft elements. Despite having launched less than a year ago, support for the game has now officially ended.

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Mojang detailed this final update – Lost Legends: Snow vs Snouts. With that, the team also revealed that support for the game has officially ended, saying:

“Since launch, we've listened to community feedback and implemented a series of changes and tweaks to make the game better. With that complete, we're now going to take a step back from development.”

They continued, “While we won’t be releasing any new content (i.e. updates, Lost Legends, or Marketplace DLC) for Minecraft Legends, the fun doesn't stop here. We'll continue having a blast playing the game alongside our community because those rowdy piglins are showing no signs of slowing down.”

Though it may not have had as long of a support cycle as something like Minecraft Dungeons – which recently saw its support end after a solid 3 and a half years – not every game needs to be a live service title, and so hopefully those who enjoy playing Minecraft Legends continue to do so.

As far back as 2014 there have been rumours circulating that a Minecraft movie was in development. We have heard bits and pieces regarding the film in the many years since, with the movie claimed to be arriving in 2025. Now, we have perhaps had the biggest piece of news so far, with Jack Black said to be playing the role of protagonist Steve.

As reported by Deadline, with production for the Minecraft film set to soon begin, Jack Black has officially been cast as Steve. So far, Black has been the only actor to have had his role confirmed. While we know that the likes of Jason Momoa and Emma Myers are featured in the film, their roles have not yet been revealed.

Minecraft marks the second major video game adaptation starring Jack Black, with last year’s highly successful Mario Movie seeing him take on the role of Bowser. Additionally, Jack Black is also said to be involved in the previously-announced Borderlands film.

Jack Black is known to be a fan of video games, with the actor even taking the lead role in 2009’s Brutal Legend game – lending both his voice and likeness to the title. With production on the Minecraft movie said to be finally underway, hopefully we will get a teaser trailer sooner rather than later.

Despite being by far the best-selling game of all time with more than 300 million copies sold, Minecraft on consoles has fallen far behind when it comes to receiving any tech upgrades – so much so that on the latest and greatest Series X, the game was still limited to just 1080p. After years of waiting, current-gen Xbox players can finally play Minecraft in 4K.

As reported by Windows Central, the latest build of Minecraft (Preview. 1.20.60.23) has added a small yet very significant upgrade for Xbox Series X and S users – with both consoles now able to run the game at a full 2160p.

For the uninitiated, prior to this latest update, the game ran at just 1080p on the Xbox Series X due to the fact that the Minecraft was never enhanced for the now-last-gen Xbox One X.

Additionally, the previously-announced ‘Super Duper Graphics Pack’ never came to fruition – nor did the advertised ray tracing mode – though it appears as though these have yet to be introduced.

Still, even though a mere resolution bump might not seem like much, for a voxel-based game like Minecraft it can be quite transformative, hopefully the PS5 version gets upgraded sooner rather than later – and that the ray-tracing patch is also on its way.

For years, Minecraft has been the best-selling video game of all time, with the creativity-focused sandbox surpassing 200 million copies back in 2020. Its sales trajectory has not slowed down, with the team at Mojang now revealing that the title has officially sold more than 300 million copies.

Making the announcement during 2023’s Minecraft Live event, the team revealed that across the many platforms which it is available on, the voxel-based survival sandbox has officially sold 300 million copies, with head of Mojang Studios – Helen Chiang – saying (as transcribed by WindowsCentral):

“As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks.”

They continued, “Our incredible community has built Minecraft into what it is today and what it will become in the future. We can't wait to share new Minecraft content and experiences in the years ahead.”

For context, the game hit 200 million copies back in May of 2020, with the most recent figures putting Minecraft at 238 Million copies sold back in April of 2021. Minecraft has been the best-selling game of all time for years now, but with this latest figure, its lead has only widened – with Grand Theft Auto V taking 2nd place at 185 million copies sold.

Of course, it is worth noting that Minecraft is available on pretty much any and all platforms, including Android and iOS and so the comparison isn’t quite apples-to-apples. Still, to see any paid game surpass 300 million sales is jaw dropping to say the least. It seems like only a matter of time before Minecraft reaches half a billion sales.

Following the overwhelming success of Minecraft, we have seen the team at Mojang expand the IP outwards into other gaming genres. One such project was Minecraft Dungeons – a dungeon-crawling spin-off which released back in 2020. As the game sees its post-launch support ending, the team are celebrating Minecraft Dungeons’ more than 25 million players.

In a blog post published to their website, the team at Mojang announced that Minecraft Dungeons has surpassed 25 million players, saying: “Today, on the day of Minecraft Dungeons announcement five years ago, we’re proud to share that our little game has hit a milestone and passed 25 million unique players!”

Unfortunately, with the announcement of this milestone comes the revelation that Minecraft Dungeons’ post-launch support is ending, with the team at Mojang saying:

“However, every journey has an end. As 1.17 was Minecraft Dungeons’ final update, our team has now moved on to new projects that continue to explore experiences in the Minecraft universe. This means that there are no new features or content updates planned for the game. We do intend to continue bringing new experiences to the Minecraft universe and give our team the freedom to keep exploring the types of games they're passionate about – just as they did with Dungeons!”

Earlier this year we saw the release of Minecraft Legends – another spin-off which instead tackled the RTS genre. It is interesting to see the many different experiences that Mojang have been able to mould Minecraft into. It’ll be curious to see what they are working on next.

Over the past few weeks, we have reported on a number of listings made by various game rating boards across the world, suggesting that Mojang are gearing up to release a current-gen upgrade for the ever-popular Minecraft. Despite the evidence, Microsoft has now claimed otherwise, stating that there will not be an upgraded version of Minecraft launching anytime soon.

A couple weeks ago the German games rating board published a new listing for Minecraft, with the platforms in question being the Xbox Series X|S. Following this, the ESRB also published a new listing for Minecraft mere days ago, adding further fuel to the fire that a current-gen upgrade would soon be upon us. Unfortunately, this is seemingly not the case, with Microsoft themselves releasing a statement to Eurogamer refuting the claims, saying:

“Given the number of platforms and geographies in which Minecraft is available, we periodically go through rating reviews and updates with different regional boards. This recent rating is not indicative of any new versions or platform support for Minecraft in the near future.”

For the uninitiated, Minecraft currently runs at just 1080p on the Xbox Series X due to the fact that the game was never enhanced for the now-last-gen Xbox One X. Additionally, the previously-announced ‘Super Duper Graphics Pack’ never came to fruition – nor did the advertised ray tracing mode.

A current-gen upgrade for Minecraft is long overdue and so it is disappointing to see that PS5 and Series X|S console owners will continue to be limited to a generations-old version of the title – especially considering the fact that Minecraft is by far the best-selling game of all time.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Microsoft’s statement? Do you think a current-gen upgrade is in the works? Why is it taking so long? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Minecraft is by far the best selling game of all time, with the creativity-focused survival sandbox pushing more than 238 million copies. Despite this, the team at Mojang have yet to upgrade the game for current-generation consoles, with the title only available via backwards compatibility. After waiting years, it seems as though current-gen console owners will finally be getting a native port of the game, with multiple game rating boards hinting at this fact.

A couple weeks ago we reported that the German game ratings board (GSK) published a new listing for Minecraft on the Xbox Series consoles – suggesting that the game would soon get its long-awaited current-gen upgrade.

While this has yet to be officially confirmed, another ratings board – this time the ESRB – has also updated its website to include a Series X|S version of Minecraft, making its release seemingly inevitable.

Currently, the game runs at just 1080p on the Xbox Series X due to the fact that Minecraft was never enhanced for the now-last-gen Xbox One X. Additionally, the previously-announced ‘Super Duper Graphics Pack’ never came to fruition – nor did the advertised ray tracing mode.

With the current version of Minecraft for consoles being so far behind, this Series X|S upgrade can’t come soon enough. Hopefully it includes all of the aforementioned features. We will have to wait and see – though the outlook is positive.

Minecraft is the best-selling game of all time, having shifted over 238 million copies across the game’s many platforms. While we are unlikely to ever see a Minecraft 2, the team at Mojang have been keeping the Minecraft name going with a number of spin-offs crossing many different genres. The most recent release – Minecraft Legends – has already managed to surpass 3 million players in just under two weeks.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Minecraft Legends account revealed that “#MinecraftLegends just launched and over 3 million players have already hopped in! We’re pleased to announce our first game update, which is starting to make its way to supported platforms right now!”

In going to their blog, we can see the full list of changes and improvements coming with this first hotfix, namely matchmaking improvements, performance and stability fixes and localisation changes – with more promised to be on the way in future.

For the uninitiated, Minecraft Legends is a real-time action strategy game which sees you “explore a gentle land of rich resources and lush biomes on the brink of destruction. The ravaging piglins have arrived, and it’s up to you to inspire your allies and lead them in strategic battles to save the Overworld!”

Being a first-party Xbox release, Minecraft Legends did launch day-one on Xbox Game Pass, and so it is worth noting that the 3 million players figure does not equate to the number of copies sold. Still, seeing over 3 million people give the game a go in less than two weeks is impressive nonetheless. It will be interesting to see how the title evolves over time – both in terms of the content offered as well as the player base.

For the second half of April, the console manufacturer has now detailed the full list of titles dropping onto the service over the next two weeks – including the likes of Minecraft Legends and the much-anticipated first-party vampire hunting game Redfall.

Making the announcement on their blog, Megan Spurr, the Community Lead for Xbox Game Pass said “We have a fresh batch of games, including many coming your way on day one with Game Pass! Sharpen your stakes, get your coffee, and prep your favorite lo-fi beats while you pre-install your next favorite game.”

With that, the list of games being added over the next two weeks is as follows:

  • Minecraft Legends (Cloud, Console, and PC) – Available Today
  • Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly (Cloud, Console, and PC) – April 20
  • Medieval Dynasty (Xbox One) – April 20
  • Homestead Arcana (Cloud, PC, and Xbox Series X|S) – April 21
  • Cassette Beasts (PC) – April 26

  • The Last Case of Benedict Fox (Console and PC) – April 27
  • Redfall (Cloud, PC, and Xbox Series X|S) – May 2

Though the list of new additions may not be the most industry-breaking, many of the inclusions are day-one Game Pass titles, namely: Minecraft Legends; Coffee Talk Episode 2; Homestead Arcana; Cassette Beasts; The Last Case of Benedict Fox; and of course, Redfall.

As always, a number of Games are also set to leave the service come the end of the month, including the infinitely playable Tetris Effect Connected. The full list of games being removed from the service can be found HERE.

While many Minecraft players continue to rely on the original Java release thanks to its abundance of community support, Microsoft have continued to support the Bedrock version, including multiple unique and interesting crossovers. Following the likes of Mario and Sonic, Minecraft x Mega Man X has now been announced.

Available now for the price of 1340 minecoins (roughly £6) the Mega Man X bundle does a great deal to translate the classic Mega Man X experience into Minecraft, with the description reading as follows:

“Dash through the blockiest Mega Man X world, charged with the original Mega Man X soundtrack and 14 classic skins from the series! Use The Blue Bomber’s arsenal of 9 weapons to fight an army of Mavericks, make your way through iconic levels, and defeat epic bosses.”

As can be seen from the trailer, the Mega Man X crossover includes a whole host of unique blocks, mechanics, enemies and an abundance of easter eggs for eagle-eyed franchise aficionados.

Fans of Mega Man have been woefully underserviced in recent years, and so it is exciting to see that Capcom have not forgotten about the Blue Bomber and co.

SkyBox Labs isn't necessarily known for the specific games developed by the studio. However, it has helped develop world-renowned franchises such as Halo, Age of Empires and Minecraft. NetEase has now acquired SkyBox Labs, hoping to bring some of that expertise into its ranks.

SkyBox Labs is a Canadian game studio founded in 2011 by EA veterans. Over the last 12 years, the studio has been mostly developing games with Microsoft Studios, such as Age of Empires II HD expansions, Age of Mythology and Rise of Nations extended editions, Halo series, and even Minecraft.

During that time, the studio still developed a few titles on its own, namely Dragon Arena, Parade Runner, Tastee: Lethal Tactics and Stela, and co-developed EA Sports UFC. At this point, the studio is working on Fallout 76, Halo Infinite and various Minecraft games.

According to NetEase Games, SkyBox Labs will work independently from its new mother company as it continues to develop games for PC and consoles with its current partners. According to Shyang Kong, co-founder of SkyBox Labs, the decision to acquire the Vancouver-based studio was to grow the company's presence in Canada and co-developing more AAA games for some of the biggest game studios worldwide.

Minecraft has a huge custom modding and custom server community, and with the rise in NFTs, some custom servers have been looking at ways to integrate blockchain and NFTs with unofficial Minecraft servers. This week, Mojang officially updated its Minecraft usage guidelines, banning NFTs and blockchain technologies from being used.

In a post titled ‘Minecraft and NFTs‘, Mojang confirmed that it will not support or allow NFTs with Minecraft, meaning using NFTs to sell custom skins or worlds for Minecraft is prohibited. Mojang also has “no plans” to implement blockchain technology into Minecraft for the foreseeable future, although they will continue to “monitor” the technology as it evolves in case a genuinely practical use-case does appear somewhere down the line. For now though, cryptocurrencies, NFTs and marketplace trading are not on the table.

“To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications nor may they be utilized to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, including worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods”. the post reads. “We will also be paying close attention to how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure that the above principles are withheld and determine whether it will allow for more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming. However, we have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft right now”.

While this will put off the NFT crowd, there are many other ways to integrate microtransactions into custom Minecraft servers, and some servers are aggressively monetised. This is also something that Mojang should perhaps be taking a look at as ultimately, Minecraft is a game marketed towards a younger audience.

KitGuru Says: Due to some of the monetisation systems already in place for some custom, unofficial Minecraft servers, there was some concern about growing interest in NFTs and crypto. With that in mind, some kind of statement from Mojang was needed.

With Mojang wrapping up work on Minecraft Dungeons, the studio has turned its attention to a new spin-off game. Minecraft Legends will be releasing next year as an all-new action strategy game developed in partnership with Blackbird Interactive.

In Minecraft Legends, players will discover a full of lush biomes and rich resources. But this beautiful land is on the brink of terrible change – the piglin invasion has begun and threatens to corrupt the Overworld. It's up to the player to make unexpected friends (including some classic mobs you’ll recognise from Minecraft) to form valuable alliances and lead the way into strategic battles against the fierce invaders from the Nether.

Minecraft Legends will have its own full campaign, containing “many surprises” for both newcomers and Minecraft veterans alike. The game will also feature online co-op as well as competitive multiplayer.

The game doesn't have an exact release date just yet, it is planned for 2023. Like many other games shown during the showcase today, this game should be coming in the first half of next year.

KitGuru Says: It'll be interesting to see a strategy-focused take on Minecraft. What did you all think of the gameplay reveal? Will you be giving this a go when it hits Game Pass?

Back in 2020, Mojang and Nvidia teamed up to implement full path-traced ray-tracing in Minecraft, releasing a bespoke version of the game on PC called Minecraft RTX. Recently, ray tracing showed up in the preview version of Minecraft for Xbox Series X/S consoles, but Mojang has since removed this, claiming that it does not have ‘near future' plans to ship this feature.

In a statement posted to Twitter last night, Mojang acknowledged the issue, saying that “prototype code for raytracing support on Xbox consoles” was included “inadvertently”. RT features have now been removed from the Minecraft preview on Xbox and we unfortunately do not know when, or even if it will ever return.

“The previous Minecraft Preview build available to Xbox Insiders inadvertently included prototype code for raytracing support on Xbox consoles. This early prototype code has been removed from Preview and doesn't signal near future plans to bring raytracing support to consoles”, Mojang said in a tweet.

Mojang has been working on improving the graphics in Minecraft for consoles in recent years. Prior to Minecraft RTX, Mojang had announced the ‘Super Duper Graphics Pack', but that was scrapped in 2019 due to performance issues on certain platforms. Now it is confirmed that Mojang is experimenting with a ray-tracing update on next-gen hardware, but the studio has not confirmed any plans to ship this.

KitGuru Says: Minecraft RTX looked incredible on PC, so it would be cool to see what Mojang can deliver with Xbox Series X hardware in particular. Unfortunately, it sounds like any potential ray-tracing update is still a long ways off from release.

One of the first games to take advantage of hardware accelerated ray-tracing on PC was Minecraft, transforming the simple blocky world into a visually accurate graphical showpiece. This ray tracing update is now coming to Xbox Series X|S owners.

As reported by The Verge’s Tom Warren, Minecraft’s latest Preview update has added native support for the Xbox Series X|S – as can be identified by the game icon now having the next-gen systems’ logo plastered on the front.

Currently, the exact details of this update are unknown, however the one major and immediately noticeable improvement comes in the form of ray-tracing being applied to the game.

Despite still being in preview, the ray tracing appears to be fully implemented, offering a major visual improvement to Minecraft without the addition of texture packs or 3rd-party shaders.

As with many of Minecraft’s other settings, the game’s ray tracing draw distance can be adjusted, leading to a scalable and user-adjustable experience. It will be interesting to see what performance looks like, and whether PS5 owners will eventually see this update.

Minecraft is the best selling game in the world, with almost 250 million copies sold. Despite this huge figure, it pales in comparison to the number of  video views that Minecraft has collectively amassed over the years. As announced by YouTube, Minecraft has now surpassed 1 Trillion video views on YouTube.

Making the announcement, YouTube revealed that “This year, Minecraft YouTube passed a nearly unimaginable milestone: Videos related to the game have been viewed more than one trillion times.”

Adding context to just how big of a number 1 Trillion is, the platform holder said “If each of those one trillion views were just one second long, that would add up to over 30,000 years. If each view were a Minecraft block 12 inches square, you could build a stack that reached from the Earth to the sun and back — with about seven million miles to spare. That’s how big one trillion views is.”

Alongside this, YouTube released a website showing off the various Minecraft trends on YouTube – from the most watched type of Minecraft content and game modes currently, to the top 50 videos and content creators from each year since 2010.

YouTube concluded by saying “As our data shows, it took around eight years for this community to generate 500 billion views, but only another two or so to double that and hit one trillion. What future heights they hit we can only guess at, but as with this milestone, it will be fun to watch it happen.”

Minecraft is a video game juggernaut that keeps finding its way to the top of the YouTube trends despite being more than a decade old. This shows not only the care and effort put into the game by Mojang, but also the hundreds of millions of fans across the world consuming and creating content.

While Minecraft is currently the best selling video game of all time, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V is slowly trying to make its way to the top spot. As part of Take-Two Interactive’s Q2 FY2022 results, it was announced that GTA V is now at 155 million copies sold.

With 5 million more copies sold over the course of the past fiscal Quarter, GTA V has now officially sold over 155 million copies. While still a far cry from Minecraft’s numbers (which currently sits at 238 million copies sold), GTA V continues to sell like hotcakes.

According to this fiscal report, GTA V is the best selling game of the past decade within the US, both in terms of unit and dollar sales. This is interesting to note, as Minecraft launched within the past decade, meaning that while worldwide Minecraft is at the top, in the US at least, GTA V seems to have outsold it.

Other interesting things to note is that with GTA V included, the franchise has sold over 355 million copies to date. While impressive in its own right, the fact that GTA V accounts for 155 million of that figure means that the game has almost outsold the entire rest of the franchise’s games combined.

All of this is without the release of the upcoming Expanded and Enhanced version, which is set to launch in March of 2022. With the game coming to a whole new generation of consoles, and GTA VI nowhere in sight, it will be interesting to see how many copies GTA V will have sold when all is finally said and done.

Xbox Game Pass has continued to improve this year with the addition of more first-party games and major third-party deals. November is shaping up to be one of the biggest months of the year, with a strong line-up of headline worthy titles.

While last month's big Xbox Game Pass releases included Back 4 Blood and Age of Empires 4, November is looking to top that with Forza Horizon 5, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Definitive Edition, It Takes Two, Minecraft and more.

Here are the biggest games now coming soon to Xbox Game Pass:

  • Grand Theft Auto San Andreas Definitive Edition (Console)
  • It Takes Two (Console, PC and Cloud)
  • Forza Horizon 5 (Console, PC and Cloud)
  • Kill It With Fire (Console, PC and Cloud)
  • Unpacking (Console, PC and Cloud)
  • Football Manager 2022 (Console, PC and Cloud)
  • One Step From Eden (Console and PC)
  • Minecraft (PC)

Surprisingly, Minecraft wasn't already on Xbox Game Pass for PC, so that ends up being a pretty major addition for this month. While the game doesn't generate many headlines nowadays, it still battles for the most game played in the world on a monthly basis, with millions of monthly active players.

Minecraft is the best selling video game of all time, with over 200 million copies sold, and 140 million active monthly users. Evenso, not everyone owns the game, and so in order to boost its Game Pass numbers, Xbox has now announced that Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition will be coming to the game subscription service.

Minecraft Live, described as “A celebration of all things Minecraft!” recently took place, bringing with it a whole litany of announcements. Alongside the news that Minecraft’s Cave & Cliffs Part II update is coming in “a month or two,” it was also revealed that both main versions of the game will be coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC in November under the same launcher.

Minecraft’s PC release offers two main different versions: The Bedrock Edition and Java Edition. Java Edition served as the original release for the game, and offers many advantages over the Bedrock Edition, namely mods, free user content and more.

Minecraft’s Bedrock Edition on the other hand sees less user support, but more support from Mojang and Microsoft, offering interesting paid DLC packs, official ray-tracing support and more.

No matter which version of Minecraft you prefer, it is good to see both PC Editions of the ever-popular game are being put onto Game Pass for PC. It will be interesting to see how this affects sales of the game on PC from this point forth – especially as Game Pass is estimated to have more than 30 million subscribers. Roblox is one of the biggest games in the world, played by over 200 million people every month. A large proportion of these players are children, and so as a measure of ‘protection’ the online social sandbox game has now banned hand holding, kissing, and “other romantic gestures in a romantic context.”

Roblox recently updated its terms of service, which alongside changes to the way that its IP is allowed to be used, has now banned a number of ‘romantic’ gestures in game.

To be more specific, Roblox announced that “Roblox is a safe space for meeting online friends, chatting, and collaborating on creative projects, but we prohibit content that seeks or portrays romantic relationships, including:

  • Animations of kissing, hand holding, or other romantic gestures in a romantic context
  • Experiences that depict romantic events, including weddings, dates, and honeymoons”

While this may seem odd initially, the game is heavily targeted towards – and played by – children, and so though such actions may not be inappropriate in isolation, they can be exploited and abused by adults attempting to groom children.

Though the actions taken by Roblox may be seen as slightly extreme, for many this is likely to be an acceptable move. Even if some may consider this to be censoring and policing one's actions, the fact that Roblox’s association with children is so high means that amajority of users will likely be willing to accept these changes in the name of safeguarding children.

Minecraft is the best selling video game of all time with over 200 million copies sold. Since Microsoft’s purchase of Mojang, the console manufacturer has been trying to capitalise on the IP releasing new and adjacent Minecraft games – to varying levels of success. The company continues to leverage the IP however, with two new Minecraft games reportedly in development.

Recently we reported that at least one Minecraft game was in the works, thanks to a leak discussing all future Microsoft games. As claimed by Windows Central now however, “There is more Minecraft coming. I know from trusted sources that Mojang has at least two all-new projects that aren't Minecraft or Minecraft Dungeons, although I have no idea exactly what those games might look like.”

While the idea of a Minecraft 2 has become a popular joke, there is always the chance that Mojang may go down that route – although this is highly unlikely. What is more likely is that new games set in the Minecraft world are in development.

Previous Minecraft games which have leveraged the IP include Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Earth and most recently, Minecraft Dungeons. All of these games took on different genres and so it is possible that these two new games will likewise tackle other gameplay styles.

Despite being the biggest game in the world, it seems as though the IP alone isn't enough to guarantee a success, as Minecraft Earth was shut down back in July of this year, and Minecraft Dungeons received mixed reviews across the board.

Mojang and Microsoft will likely always make money from the original Minecraft, though it seems any effort to expand the IP into a franchise has been less successful. It will therefore be interesting to see what these two games are, and whether they take lessons from the team’s previous failings.

As we all know, the pandemic and associated lockdowns keeping people at home led to a surge in gaming across all platforms between 2020 and 2021. Due to this, there was also a surge in malware attacks, using pirated games or mods as a vehicle for malware, leading to Kaspersky alone detecting over 5.8 million attacks in the past year.

In its game-related cyberthreats report, Kaspersky picked the 24 most popular PC games and the top 10 mobile titles of 2021. Using only PC titles, in Q2 2020, Kaspersky recorded 2.48 million detections, a 66% increase over the previous quarter. However, the number of detected attacks in Q2 2021 was reduced significantly, to 636,904.

On the other hand, the mobile gaming trends were slightly different, with the number of detections increasing by 185% from February 2020 (1138) to March 2020 (3253). Compared to Q2 2021, the number of attacks decreased by only 10%.

Out of the 24 games used by malware developers, Minecraft was the most common. That may be explained by its massive modding community, which distributes mods through unofficial platforms, “providing a convenient disguise for malicious payloads or unwanted software”. After Minecraft, there's Sims 4, which is then followed by PUBG, Fortnite, and GTA V. You can see how many times Kaspersky detected malware in these games during the past year (from Q3 2020 to Q2 2021) in the following table:

Game title Users Detections Files
Minecraft 184887 3010891 36336
The Sims 4 43252 1266804 5844
PUBG 26724 484528 10360
Fortnite 14702 267598 6109
GTA V 14261 187114 4953

The majority of files distributed under disguise were downloaders, applications that download unwanted software and adware to the infected device. Some of this unwanted software and adware include Trojan-Stealers, Trojan bankers and backdoors.

To prevent issues with malware, Kaspersky recommends users employ strong passwords, download apps from trusted sources and use reliable security solutions on PC and mobile.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru says: The number of detections might be decreasing, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be careful when downloading mods and other things. Instead of downloading from random pages on the Internet, try to find the official distribution channel of what you want to download.

2021 marks the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. While SEGA's big anniversary game will not be released until 2022, the blue blur has been making his way into a number of other games. Now it has been announced that Sonic the Hedgehog is crossing over with Minecraft.

Making the announcement on its blog, Mojang said “ I never have to make up an excuse for not voluntarily jogging, because now I have an infinite 3D runner at my fingertips. I can get all the need for speed my system craves in the different acts and procedurally generated locations instead. Boring forest trail? Tired beach route? Pass! I’ll stick to the Green Hills Zone and Chemical Plant Zone, thank you very much.”

Alongside a trailer for the DLC, revealing a rather faithful translation of Sonic’s gameplay recreated in Minecraft, the team revealed that “The rings aren’t the only thing that Sonic brought with him, there are also plenty of obstacles to dash past, bosses to defeat, and momentum to build as you run towards a high score.”

Finally, players can “celebrate Sonic’s birthday by joining the special server event! Starting soon, The Hive are hosting a two-week server-hub takeover featuring mini-games and a few festive surprises.”

Minecraft has crossed over with many different franchises, including Sonic’s old rival Mario himself. In lieu of a new game to celebrate Sonic’s 30th anniversary in 2021, Sonic in Minecraft seems to be an amusing way to celebrate.

Since its 1.0 launch all the way back in 2011, Minecraft has continued to receive major updates, with no clear indication of it slowing down any time soon. The latest update, titled the “Cave and Cliffs” update has now gone live, with Part 1 now available for all to enjoy.

The Minecraft Cave and Cliffs update Part 1 is available now for both the Bedrock and Java versions of Minecraft, and brings with it a litany of improvements and additions. Most notably, the update adds a number of new blocks and mobs.

Three new mobs are being added to the game: the axolotl, goats, and the glow squid. On the blocky side, small and big dripleaf, pointed dripstone, caves vines and glow berries, azalea and azalea leaves, flowering azalea and flowering azalea leaves, hanging roots, rooted dirt, moss carpet, and moss blocks are all being added to the game.

That’s not all however, as glow lichen, powder snow, deepslate blocks, and amethyst geodes are being added, allowing players to craft both spyglass and tinted glass.

The final major addition is copper, allowing players to craft lighting rods – to name just one example. Each new mob and block added to Minecraft can fundamentally change the way the game interacts and plays, and so the Cave and Cliffs update offers major changes to the way Minecraft is played. It will be interesting to see exactly how the new additions in part 2 serve to further change the game.

Minecraft is the best selling game of all time. With over 200 million copies sold, the next best-selling (GTA V) is over 55 million copies behind. With so many copies sold, it may be unsurprising to see a spin-off game perform well. Even so, Minecraft: Dungeon, the Diablo-style dungeon crawler, has proven to be a success, seeing almost 12 million players in one year.

Making the announcement on its website, as part of the game’s 1st anniversary, the team at Mojang revealed that Minecraft Dungeons has managed to amass 11.5 million unique players across 232 countries.

It is worth noting that Minecraft Dungeons is Available on Xbox Game Pass, which currently has over 23 million subscribers. This means that in theory, a large number of these players may not have purchased the game. That being said, currently Game Pass is only available in 41 countries, meaning that at least a significant portion of the players are paying customers.

Minecraft Dungeons launched on the 26th of may 2020 to a mixed critical reception, owing to the game’s inability to utilise the Minecraft IP, nor the dungeon-crawling gameplay to its maximum potential.

Still, if the over 400 billion blocks walked is anything to go by, players seem to be enjoying the game. It will be interesting to see how the game evolves over the next year.

KitGuru says: What did you think of Minecraft Dungeons? Did you play it? Did the game do justice to the Minecraft IP? Let us know down below.

Minecraft is the best selling video game on the planet. With over 200 million copies sold, the open sandbox game is far ahead of all other competitors in this regard. These figures only account for paid copies sold however. In mainland China, where the game is free-to-play, Minecraft has surpassed over 400 million registered players, for a total of 600 million across the world.

Back in May 2020 it was announced that Minecraft had sold over 200 million copies across all of its available platforms. This makes Minecraft the best selling game of all time, with second place going to Grand Theft Auto V (with 135 million copies sold).

As reported by industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, in Mainland China, Minecraft has surpassed over 400 million registered users. The reason for the distinction between regions is the fact that unlike the rest of the world, in China, Minecraft is free-to-play on mobile and PC and is published by NetEase.

With a population of around 1.4 billion people, Minecraft’s total penetration into the country arrives at around 28.5%, meaning one in every 4 people in China now own the game. Despite the massive figures, Minecraft is not the biggest free-to-play game. CrossFire, which is a free-to-play tactical first-person shooter, has over 1 billion registered users.

Still, there is no denying that Minecraft has achieved a level of success that few games will ever see, both in the premium and free-to-play market.

Minecraft was one of the first games to push cross-platform multiplayer between consoles, PC and even mobile. Minecraft Dungeons launched without cross-play multiplayer, but that will be changing soon, with a new update bringing together all console versions and PC.

Today during Minecraft Live, Mojang announced that Cross-Play is coming to Minecraft Dungeons in November:

As we can tell from the tweet above, that means friends across PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch will be able to play together, teaming up and taking on challenging dungeons.

Presumably, the next-gen Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will also be included in cross-play, with both consoles also set to launch in November.

KitGuru Says: Minecraft Dungeons was surprising to me. I went in not expecting much but I quickly began having plenty of fun levelling up and tackling different challenges. Have many of you played Minecraft Dungeons yet?

Just as promised, today the latest DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was announced. This time around, the team is bringing Minecraft Steve and Alex to the battlefield, as well as Minecraft themed maps to play on.

The announcement was made earlier this afternoon and has much of the Smash community talking. Minecraft Steve has been rumoured to be making an appearance in Super Smash Bros for a long time now. You can see the announcement trailer below:

Joining Steve and Alex is the Minecraft zombie and the Enderman. From the trailer, we can also see special Minecraft themed battle items and an evolving stage featuring the different biomes available in Minecraft.

More information is due to be shared on the 3rd of October during Minecraft Live, a digital convention that is replacing MineCon going forward.

KitGuru Says: To this day, Minecraft continues to be one of the biggest and most recognisable games in the world. With Super Smash Bros being all about collaborations with the most iconic characters across the industry, seeing Minecraft represented here isn't too surprising. Hopefully there will be more DLC collaborations to come, as the evolution of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been a joy to follow over the last couple of years.

For a while now, it was well known that Minecraft was one of the best selling games of all time. The open sandbox creation game surpassed 100 million copies sold back in 2016. Despite releasing all the way back in 2009, the game continues to sell incredibly well each month. Following the celebration of Mojang Studios’ 11th anniversary, Microsoft has now confirmed that the game has surpassed 200 million copies sold – a milestone for the entire industry.

As reported by The Verge, Minecraft has now officially sold over 200 million copies. These figures come from Mojang Studios’ owner Microsoft, who bought the Swedish studio back in 2014 for $2.5 billion.

Even more surprising perhaps is the fact that the game continues to be played by a massive number of fans. Despite releasing back in 2009, most owners of Minecraft are still playing it to this day, with the game seeing a reported 126 million players each month.

200 million copies makes Minecraft by far the best selling paid video game of all time – at least based on available data. Though a game such as Tetris has commonly been said to be the best selling game of all time, detailed figures are not available for the classic puzzler. Based on available data, Minecraft is far and away the best selling game of all time, with Grand Theft Auto V being a not-so-close second – with 120 million copies sold.

Though there exist games with a far higher player base (Fortnite for example recently surpassed 350 million players), Minecraft is the best selling paid game, meaning that each of those 200 million players gave money directly to Mojang Studios/Microsoft. With Minecraft continuing to be so successful, it’ll be interesting to see how many copies the game will have sold by the time it hits its 20th anniversary.
