ECS is back with a new round of mini PCs. The new Liva Z5 Plus, Liva Z5E Plus and Liva Z5F Plus are built for industry-specific applications, with the ability to connect up to four displays to power things like electronic whiteboards, airport flight systems and Point of Service systems.

The new Liva Z5 series is powered by Intel 13th and 14th Generation Core processors, offering up to 10 cores to efficiently handle tasks, as well as support for WiFi 6E, enabling fast data transmission speeds and playback. While small and compact, these systems also support multiple storage drives, so they can be upgraded with M.2 NVMe SSDs, or a 2.5-inch SSD or HDD. To ensure high-speed connectivity, the system also boasts two 2.5G ports and support vPro and physical TPM for added security.

Designed for vertical industry applications, LIVA Z5 Plus and Z5E Plus are certified as Intel Edge Software Recommended Hardware. Serving as ideal solutions for multi-display industrial needs, they boast 4K/UHD image processing, two HDMI ports, a DisplayPort and USB Type-C with Alt DP. The Z5E Plus, in particular, features four COM interfaces, seamlessly connecting to various industrial applications such as POS systems for quick checkout processes and barcode scanners for accurate tracking and management of goods.

In addition to supporting a multi-display solution for up to four screens, the fanless design of the LIVA Z5F Plus provides an ideal solution for industrial environments, where dust accumulation can lead to maintenance costs and shorten a system's lifespan.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Intel had decided to end production of its NUC mini PCs, but left the door open for OEMs to make their own branded NUCs. Now, Intel has announced a new partnership with Asus to produce future NUC systems.

Moving forward, Asus will manufacture and develop NUC systems instead of Intel. However, this is a non-exclusive license, meaning that other OEMs could potentially work with Intel in the future to produce NUCs. It is a similar concept to Valve's Steam Machines, with multiple vendors to choose from and a licensed brand tying it all together.

Sam Gao, Intel Client Platform Solutions General Manager, said: “Our NUC systems product team delivered unique products that spurred innovation in the ultra-small form factor market. As we pivot our strategy to enable ecosystem partners to continue NUC systems product innovation and growth, our priority is to ensure a smooth transition for our customers and partners. I am looking forward to ASUS continuing to deliver exceptional products and supporting our NUC systems customers.”

Asus will be making 10th Gen and 13th Gen powered NUC systems, in addition to developing future designs under a new business unit known as ASUS NUC BU.

Computex 2023 is just around the corner. Ahead of the event, some companies have already begun revealing their new products, including ASRock, which plans to show off new motherboards, monitors and Mini PCs at the event.

One of the highlights at Computex 2023 will be ASRock's impressive lineup of monitors. The showcase will feature six existing products and new gaming and business models. Among the notable displays are the PG558KF and PG32UMF.

The PG558KF is a 55-inch display boasting an 8K resolution. On the other hand, the PG32UMF is a Mini-LED gaming monitor offering a 144Hz refresh rate, 1152-zone local dimming, and remarkable HDR 1400 with 97% DCI-P3 wide colour gamut support. Both high-end models feature HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 interfaces, a USB Type-C PD3.0 90W fast charging (upstream) port, and four USB Type-A (downstream) ports, providing gamers with a wide range of connectivity options.

Additionally, ASRock will unveil the PG27QF2A IPS gaming monitor designed with mainstream specifications. It offers QHD resolution with a high refresh rate of 165Hz. The monitor features a brand-new Phantom Gaming design and includes an exclusive built-in WiFi antenna, ensuring stable WiFi reception on PCs and resolving latency and lag issues for online gaming.

Furthermore, ASRock has plans to launch the A27FE and A24FE models in the second half of the year. These entry-level monitors are equipped with FHD IPS panels, a 100Hz refresh rate, and support for AMD FreeSync technology, effectively eliminating screen tearing and stuttering. These models can be used across various applications, including business, education, home, and gaming.

ASRock is also unveiling new motherboards, including the high-end Z790 Nova WiFi 7. This board is equipped with the latest WiFi 7 and 5 Gbps LAN, offering users high-speed internet whether they connect a cable or go wireless. Designed to support power-hungry CPUs, the board features a 20+1+1 SPS Dr MOS, 20K long-lasting capacitors, and a 2oz inner layer PCB. ASRock is also showcasing the Z790 Riptide WiFi and Z790 Lightning WiFi models for the mainstream market segment. These motherboards feature superior VRM and PCB designs and toolless M.2 heatsinks.

Introducing the Taichi Lite series, ASRock acknowledges the increasing luxury of motherboards, particularly in the high-end segment. With boutique-looking designs and fancy RGB effects, motherboard prices have skyrocketed. However, ASRock aims to change this trend. Based on the existing Z790/B650E Taichi models, the Z790/B650E Taichi Lite retains 100% of the original specifications, including a 24-phase VRM for vCore, USB4 Type-C, and Gen 5 M.2 support. The Taichi Lite series focuses purely on functionality, performance, and durability, bringing high-end motherboards to a lower price point.

Finally, ASRock is also announcing its new DeskMeet series of Mini PCs, powered by Ryzen 7000 series processors, with support for DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 SSDs. There will also be a DeskSlim model, which shrinks down the volume of the chassis to just 6.5L.

Xiaomi has been in the PC market for a long time now, selling laptops, peripherals and monitors, but the company hasn't yet released a desktop. That will soon change, with Xiaomi preparing to launch a new small form factor PC.

According to Wccftech, Xiaomi was planning to announce two systems during the Xiaomi Mi 13 launch event, but undisclosed circumstances forced the company to postpone it. Still, a small group of people had the chance to see both upcoming SFF PCs.

One of the systems is the Xiaomi Mini Host. As per the photos, the system has no hardware installed besides a 100W SFF PSU (custom form factor). However, it seems the chassis can hold a 2-slot desktop GPU, even if the 100W PSU might not be enough to power it. At the moment, it's unclear if the system is based on an Intel or AMD platform. Based on the marketing material, the system will run Windows.

The other system is a NUC-like mini-PC powered by the AMD Ryzen 7 6800H, a 45W APU with RDNA2 graphics (Radeon 680M graphics). This system will be available with and without storage and memory. The model with no storage or memory will reportedly go for 2999 RMB (£352). The other model will come with 16GB DDR5 RAM and 512GB storage, costing 3999 RMB (£469).

Minisforum has been pretty active recently, having launched a couple of mini PC models already this year. The latest mini PCs are a cut above the rest though, featuring Intel Tiger Lake processors, paired with Nvidia RTX 30 series GPUs, all in an incredibly slim package.

There will be two models for now – the NUCX15 and the NUCX17. After looking at the photos (via Wccftech), the first thing we've noticed is the Intel skull logo, usually seen on the company's NUC gaming systems. However, compared to most Intel NUCs, the new Minisofrum mini PCs look considerably thinner, despite their specifications. Such systems will need proper cooling to deal with the generated heat, hence why the casing has a full-vented side panel and a few vents on the rear.

The NUCX15 will likely be the most accessible, as it packs a Core i5-11400H Tiger Lake chip and an RTX 3060 GPU. For the NUCX17, there's a Core i7-11800H Tiger Lake CPU and an RTX 3070 GPU. The remaining specifications are shared between the two models.

Measuring 80x260x394mm, the NUCX systems will support up to 64GB of DDR4 memory and two M.2 2280 SSDs. You can buy the NUCX PCs with or without storage. However, buying with an SSD will have Windows 11-Pro installed. Connectivity interfaces include an HDMI port, an Ethernet port (RJ45) and Thunderbolt 4 port on the rear, a 3.5mm audio-out jack, 3x USB-A 3.2 ports and an SD card reader on the I/O front panel. Pricing and availability is still TBC.

The Corsair One may have been around for a few years now, but it remains a stylish and visually unique small form-factor gaming PC. It's very well built, with aluminium side panels with a lovely black finish, as well as two RGB LED strips running down the front of the unit, which you can see in action in the video above. It even passed the wife test, as my Mrs said she would be happy for it to stay in the living room hooked up to the TV, and that's no small achievement!

Both side panels feature triangular cut-outs to allow for some ventilation (more on that later), but it's also good to see a very healthy selection of ports. The front panel has two USB 3.1 Gen1 ports, as well as a USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C and an audio jack, all easily accessible. Round the back of the unit, there's a ton of options too, including six full-size USB Type-A ports, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, as well as 7.1 audio jacks, 2.5Gb Ethernet and WiFi 6E antennae. The graphics card provides three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.1 video outputs.

The top of the unit features a grille section, and we can just about make out a case fan directly below. This is the only system fan in the Corsair One, as the PC uses what Corsair calls a ‘convection-assisted liquid cooling system'. If you've seen other Corsair One models, it hasn't really changed, but the system uses two closed-loop liquid coolers, one on the CPU and one on the GPU, with the single fan in the roof drawing air through the internals and exhausting it out of the top of the chassis. We've seen this work to great effect in the past, but of course today we will be doing a thorough look at the thermals later in the review.

To access the internals of the PC, a small button is pushed on the back of the machine, and that releases the top fan. This is a Corsair ML140 unit, though Corsair told us they have tweaked the rpm range to make it more suitable for use in the Corsair one, and it is possible to swap this out for any other 140mm that you might want.

Once that is out of the way, four small screws can be removed from the chassis, and they release the side panels which can be hinged open to access the internals. As viewed from the front, the left-hand side houses the motherboard and PSU, while the graphics is on the right side of the unit, connected via a riser card.

Speaking of the motherboard, Corsair is vague in its spec-sheet, claiming only a ‘Z690' board is used, but we found it to be an MSI MEG Z690i Unify – a suitably high-end mini-ITX motherboard, so Corsair is clearly not cutting corners there and it is a great pairing with the i9-12900K. Our model has 64GB of DDR5 memory too, two 32GB sticks. I was a little disappointed to see bare green PCBs for this models, with no Vengeance LPX heatspreaders for instance, but you can't see the internals when the system is closed so it hardly matters.

Just below the CPU block, a heatsink covers the 2TB NVMe SSD. I assumed this would be a Corsair MP600 unit, but closer investigation reveals it is in fact a Samsung PM9A1. We test the speeds later in this review (and, spoiler alert, it is absolutely fine), but I found it strange that Corsair weren't using one of their own SSDs in the Corsair One. I asked about this and Corsair told us the exact SSD used ‘entirely depends on stock levels at the time of manufacture, however we [Corsair] of course prefer them to be MP series wherever possible.'

Below the motherboard area, we can note the PSU, a Corsair SF750 80+ Platinum unit. This is a very high quality power supply and gave us no problems at all during our testing, and it's good to see Corsair put in effort to keep the cables as tucked away as possible, leaving the internals as accessible as we could hope for from a 10-litre chassis.

Over on the right hand side of the machine, we find the graphics card, with Corsair using a PCIe 4.0 riser cable to allow it to be mounted opposite to the CPU, and it is clearly vertically mounted too. Corsair is using a very custom cooling setup for the RTX 3080 Ti. The GPU itself is liquid cooled, but we can note the use of a few copper heatpipes, and two heatsinks – one on the VRM and one on the memory, which are actively cooled with 80mm fans. It's also worth noting the card is left at reference clocks (1665MHz boost) and the power limit has not been raised from the default 350W.

On the topic of cooling, it's worth just touching on the two radiators used to cool the CPU and GPU. Both measure 20.4mm thick and 148mm wide, but the CPU radiator is shorter, with a length of 200mm, compared to 272mm in length for the RTX 3080 Ti. The GPU is the higher-power of the two so this makes sense, plus the CPU side does need to be shorter to allow fresh air for the power supply.

From a technical perspective, it is highly impressive what Corsair has managed to achieve in such a compact chassis and the One is certainly one of a kind (if you excuse the terrible pun). The only real fault I can find with the build is that upgrading the system looks tricky at best, and potentially impossible at worst. The CPU side of things is definitely less complicated, though an i9-12900K should last years, especially if you're gaming at 4K.

The GPU side, however, is the real problem. It is technically possible to swap out the graphics card as it is using a standard PCIe x16 slot. However you have to factor in the bespoke cooling hardware, which is highly unlikely to be a direct fit on a next-generation graphics card. Even if you tore all of that out and just put in an air-cooled card, not only would you be highly space-constrained, but almost certainly power and thermally constrained too, as next-gen GPUs are not shaping up to be particularly frugal with the power draw.

Confirming the core spec with CPU-Z and GPU-Z, the CPU of choice in the i300 is Intel's i9-12900K, offering eight P cores and eight E cores. Intel's spec lists a maximum Turbo power of 241W for this SKU, however do be aware that Corsair has limited this to 165W in the BIOS, but more on that on the next page.

The graphics then is the reference-clocked RTX 3080 Ti. Interestingly, GPU-Z lists Palit as the subvendor, though we would assume the card itself is just using the reference design for maximum cooling compatibility.

Corsair's iCUE software is also on hand to control things like the RGB lighting and also the fan profile, where there is a choice between the Default or Extreme modes. You can also check for firmware updates and set alerts when either CPU or GPU temperatures exceed a specified threshold.

Minisforum is back with another mini PC, but this time around, there is a very interesting twist. The new Minisforum B550 system is an AMD-based mini PC, equipped with a Ryzen 5000 CPU or APU, as well as a docking station, so you can run an external GPU for additional performance.

As reported by CnBeta (via Tom's Hardware), the Minisforum B550 mini PC comes with an optional docking station, which can be used to connect a dedicated graphics card to the system via a PCIe 3.0 x16 interface.

The docking station supports external GPUs of any length through a PCIe 3.0 interface. Additionally, the docking station has space to house an SFF/ATX PSU to power the GPU, as the system doesn't need it. Instead, it uses a dedicated 120W power adapter.

As for the mini-PC itself, it supports Ryzen 5000 chips with up to 12x cores and 65W TDP, including the Ryzen 5 5600X, the Ryzen 7 5700G and the Ryzen 9 5900. In addition, there's space for 2x M.2 PCIe 3.0/SATA slots and 2x SO-DIMM DDR4 memory modules, and it features a 1G LAN, USB-A 3.2 and USB-C ports, a DisplayPort, 2x HDMI ports, and 3.5mm audio connectors.

KitGuru says: In its basic form, the system looks quite ok for office use and casual gaming. However, once you hook it up with a dedicated GPU, it will perform better in almost any task you throw at it, but at the cost of a larger form factor. Users will have to decide whether the extra performance can compensate for the bigger footprint.

KitGuru says: It's not every day that we see a mini PC using liquid metal to cool the CPU. However, as components demand more power, they also generate more heat, so it wouldn't be far-fetched to see liquid metal become standard in the future.

Intel's next generation NUC is coming soon and recent leaks have given us a good look at its planned specifications. The Intel NUC 11 Extreme Compute Element is a small, graphics card-sized PC designed for very compact cases. Despite its size, it looks like Intel won't be cutting down on anything, offering up to a Core i9-11980HK CPU and 64GB of RAM.

Just like the previous NUC 9 Extreme, the slide leaked on Chiphell shows that the NUC 11 Extreme, codenamed “Driver Bay”, will have three CPU tiers to choose from. Options include Tiger Lake-H45 Core i9, Core i7, and Core i5 processors. These processors will be paired with up to 64GB of DDR4-3200 SODIMMs in a dual-channel configuration.

The slide further details the NUC 11 Extreme specifications, which include 3x M.2 slots for PCIe 4.0/3.0 storage and support for Intel Optane Memory M10, H10 and Optane SSDs. For display connectivity, there's an HDMI 2.0b connector and 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports, supporting up to 3x 4K displays with the Intel iGPU. The mini-PC will also feature 6x USB-A 3.1 connectors, Intel 2.5G and/or 10G network interfaces, Bluetooth 5, and Wi-Fi 6.

Comparing both the NUC 9 Extreme and the NUC 11 Extreme, both units seem to be similarly sized with some aesthetic differences. The single 8-pin power connector is at the same position as its predecessor, on the top right corner. The cooling solution has been modified with a slightly bigger fan and located closer to the centre. The cover has also been changed, replacing the old Intel logo with Intel's skull.

We recently spent some time modding the Intel NUC 9 Extreme, so if you are interested in mini-PCs, be sure to check out our series on that, HERE.

KitGuru says: The NUC 11 Extreme is shaping up to be very powerful, especially for its size. Have any of you used an Intel NUC before? What do you think of the upcoming NUC 11 Extreme?

The PN50 is aimed at businesses, both office and retail, those that just want a compact system and even home-theatre setups. Since it’s so small it can easily be tucked out of sight where other systems would struggle to fit, and can even be attached to the back of a monitor via the included VESA mount. Weighing less than 1kg, dimensions of 115 x 115 x 49 mm and a sleek black, brushed, aesthetic the PN50 will suit any home or office setup.

As this is a barebones system it does not come supplied with any storage drives, RAM or even operating system. Of course, depending on your use for the system will depend on what you choose to install but for our test purposes we chose 16GB of G-Skill Ripjaws SO-DIMM DDR4 3200MHz RAM and 1TB WD Blue SN550 NVMe SSD.

Installation is easy, even if you’re not a confident PC builder the instructions are clear. I don’t think you should be put off and I’d give it a good 8/10 for how easy it is to install or even upgrade.

If you take a look at the specifications above, connectivity wise, it really does have a lot going for it, more so than a lot of full-sized systems. This is excellent for business users as well as home use too. On the front we also have one combination audio jack for line in, mic in and headphone out, dual-array microphones for use with Windows Cortana and an IR receiver for use with a remote control, which is another great feature that will appeal to businesses and a 3 in 1 micro-SD card reader.

Chuwi, a Chinese computing device manufacturer, has just unveiled what it calls the “world's smallest Mini PC”. The LarkBox is about the size of an apple, but don't let the small footprint deceive you, as it's more than capable of streaming content in high-resolutions, including 4K.

Weighing only 127g and measuring 61x61x43mm (LxWxH), the Chuwi LarkBox is designed to be moved around easily. Besides its small dimensions, it's also “lighter than most phones on the market”. Given its design, the Larkbox can be used in a multitude of scenarios, such as taking it to your workplace, using as an entertainment centre, and even installing it at the back of a monitor (via VESA mount), to create an All-in-One PC.

The LarkBox comes equipped with an Intel N4100, paired with the integrated UHD Graphics 600, 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM and a 128 GB SSD. Additionally, there's a MicroSD slot that supports up to 128GB of extra storage. These specifications should allow it to playback 4K content without hiccups.

The low TDP processor, with about 5W of power consumption at standby, alongside the active cooling system installed in the LarkBox manage to keep it stable under load, while keeping the noise generated to a minimum. The connectivity options include 2x USB Type-A ports, 1x USB Type-C port, 1x HDMI port, 1x 3.5mm headphone jack, and support for Bluetooth 5.0.

Pricing and availability details of the LarkBox were not shared.

Gigabyte’s line of Brix Mini-PCs has been treated to a refresh, the Brix series is being equipped with the latest Intel 10th generation Comet Lake mobile CPUs offering even more power inside the tiny form factor PC.

The Brix range of Mini-PCs from Gigabyte features an ultra-compact form factor measuring just 46.8 x 119.5 x 119.5 mm and an internal capacity of 0.6 litres, with the upgrade to 10th generation Intel Comet Lake mobile CPUs inside the Gigabyte Brix means even more processing power will now be available in this tiny package.

Gigabyte has equipped the Brix Mini-PC series with a range of different Intel processors in the past, with the likes of 6th generation Skylake and more recently Celeron J1900 CPUs offering a range of different configurations to suit the needs of various users. The latest Intel Comet Lake mobile processors seem like the ideal candidate for the Brix with their 15W TDP meaning they should be easy to keep cool and maintain optimal core frequencies.

New Gigabyte Brix devices will include anything from the dual-core Intel Core i3-10110U right up to the hexa-core Intel Core i7-10710U powerhouse, with memory support in the form of two SODIMM slots allowing for up to 64Gb RAM to be installed. The new Brix systems also include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity with dual HDMI 2.0a output to support 4K/60 resolution.

I/O connectivity includes six USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, 3.5mm audio output, Gigabit Ethernet and a single RS232 COM port. The Brix supports add-in cards for an additional Ethernet port and second RS232 COM port to be added, as well as VESA wall mounting support via 75×75 or 100×100 wall mounting brackets.

Last year, Intel and AMD made its collaboration official, with plans to launch a new chip packing an Intel CPU and an RX Vega M GPU with HBM2 on board. At CES we got more details on specific specs for all five G-series processors and now this week, we have our first good look at performance. An engineering sample of Intel's upcoming ‘Hades Canyon' NUC mini PC has been benchmarked, showing decent 1080p gaming performance from the Intel/Radeon chip.

The folks over at Playwares managed to get their hands on the Kaby Lake and Vega powered mini PC, featuring the top end Core i7-8809G. This particular processor comes with 4C/8T, a base/boost speed of 3.1/4.2GHz and an RX Vega M GH GPU with 24 CUs, 1536 Stream Processors, 96 TUs, 64 ROPs and 4GB of HBM2 on board. Elsewhere in the system is 16GB of DDR4 RAM running at 2133MHz and a Samsung 960 Pro 1TB M.2 SSD.

With these specs at 1080p resolution, the Intel NUC managed an average frame rate of 52.59fps in Rise of the Tomb Raider at ultra settings. In Assassin's Creed Origins, it managed 34fps at ultra settings, in Rainbow Six Siege it managed an average of 96fps and in PUBG it scored 65 frames per second on average using a custom preset.

With scores like that, it looks like Intel's Kaby Lake-G mini-PCs will be more than capable for gaming at 1080p and high detail settings. Some games may need to be dialed back a bit, but considering the CPU and GPU are running on the same chip, these are impressive scores.

At CES today, we had the chance to swing by the Zotac booth, where they were showing off a new and improved MEK 1 mini gaming PC. The original Mek 1 PC launched quite recently based around Intel's 7th Gen Kaby Lake processors. However, the new version we saw today makes the jump to Coffee Lake.

The new MEK 1 will feature an 8th Gen Coffee Lake Core i7 processor, which naturally means that a new motherboard will also be in place with a revised chipset to support it.

If you can't see the gallery above, then please consider disabling Adblock. It has been known to interfere with our gallery tool.

Graphics card options range from the GTX 1060, 1070Ti and GTX 1080. The version we saw demoed today was the GTX 1070Ti model, sporting 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM. The chassis measures in at just 414mm long by 118mm wide, so there is a lot of power shrunk down into a small package.

Other features include a 450W power supply, a 240GB SSD and a 1TB HDD for additional storage. Some versions of this system will come bundled with a keyboard and mouse, giving you almost everything you need to get up and running out of the box.

We don't have exact pricing just yet, but we were told that the new MEK 1 mini PC will cost somewhere in the region of $1400 to $1650.

KitGuru Says: Zotac has been experimenting with mini PCs for a few years now and this looks to be its most powerful yet. Have any of you ever considered downsizing from a full size desktop to something smaller and more portable? What do you think of the MEK 1?

Last year, the Remix Mini was one of the most successful campaigns on Kickstarter, with 21,975 backers pledging $1,647,155 to fund the innovative mini-PC. Today, we look at the Remix Mini as it is now available for general purchase and assess whether it is worth the £50 asking price.

If you do not already know, the Remix Mini is not just a typical mini-PC. What makes it special is that it runs an adapted version of Android 5.1, named Remix OS 2.0. According to Jide Tech, this makes it the ‘world's first true Android PC.' In this review we put the Remix Mini through its paces and let you know whether it is worth the cash.

Early last year we reviewed the ECS LIVA X, and now there is an updated version – the X2. On the face of it, the LIVA X2 has changed slightly, as it is now white not black, and it has rounded, rather than square, edges. We will also look at how the internal hardware has changed and see if it makes the X2 a compelling purchase.

Admittedly, the ECS LIVA X2 is a good-looking mini PC. It is also worth pointing out it is not a ‘barebones' system like others we have seen at KitGuru where you need to install memory and storage. Rather, the LIVA X2 comes fully built with or without Windows installed, depending on your preference.

One thing to point out is that this review is of the 2GB RAM/32GB eMMC model – as opposed to the 4GB RAM/64GB eMMC variant of the X2. With Windows, the X2 costs around £240, and £160 without.

How effective is the Revo One as a mini-PC solution?

Over the last few months my colleague Leo Waldock has reviewed several ‘barebones' mini-PCs, including the Gigabyte BRIX S and the Asus VivoPC to name a couple. The Acer Revo One differs from such mini-PCs as it is not a barebones system – rather, you are buying a fully built and functioning PC.

That said, there is one area where users can chop and change things – that area being the system storage. By default, this particular model reviewed (part number DT.SYYEK.013) has an in-built 60GB boot SSD, and two 2TB HDDs. It is the HDDs we are interested in as they are both fully removable.

As you can see in the photos above, there are two removable drive caddies which slot into the two SATA ports on either side of the mini-PC. Drive removal is entirely tool free, as you just pop the protruding clip upwards to first remove the caddy, and then slide the HDD out of the caddy itself. From here, you can swap in any 2.5″ drive of your choice.

By default the two 2TB Samsung HDDs are configured in RAID 1 – which mirrors data across both drives. This protects your data should one drive fail, so it is very understandable that Acer have included this option – as the Revo One seems to be intended as a media PC, having your films and music protected from drive failure makes a lot of sense. However, if you wish you could break up this RAID 1 configuration, and thus enjoy the full 4TB storage. Personally I'd be inclined to leave it be, as for a mini-PC, 2TB is a fair amount of storage – and RAID 1 protects you from drive failures. Still, the option is there for those who may want it.

Aside from functioning as a media centre – which is clearly the intended purpose of the Revo One as a bluetooth remote control is supplied, and there is even a remote control app available – the Revo One would even make a decent desktop PC for your general computing tasks. This is thanks to the Broadwell-U i5-5200U CPU (2.2GHz which turbos to 2.7GHz), which is a good little performer. Obviously it is a laptop processor, but it is more than able to handle general office tasks such as web browsing, emailing and word processing. Considering the relative processing power, with a generous 8GB of RAM, this mini-PC begins to seem rather versatile.

It should go without saying that the Revo One is not for gaming. I have seen the integrated Intel HD 5500 graphics unit a few times now, and it simply lacks the grunt necessary for real games. Still, the Revo One gives fast benchmark scores, particularly in the video encoding test – 6:57 is the quickest encode time I have seen from any PC that I have worked with here at KitGuru.

Thermal dynamics and power consumption

power

As you can see, temperatures inside the Revo One are absolutely fine – a peak of 79 Celsius during Prime95's Small FFTs test is warm but well within the thermal limits of the CPU. Power draw is also just what we would expect from a system based on the Broadwell-U architecture.

Closing Thoughts

The Acer Revo One RL85 acquits itself very well in almost all areas.

It has a sleek and stylish modern design, with a good array of connectivity ports and display outputs – meaning dual-monitor setups are supported. The ability to remove hard drives (entirely tool-free, I might add) is also a great addition to the design of the Revo One, giving users ultimate control over the storage in their mini-PC.

main
While the included remote control and large storage space suggests the Revo One is intended primarily as a media PC, the Broadwell-U Core i5-5200U CPU is very capable in its own right if you want to use the Revo One as a traditional desktop PC. For everyday tasks the system is nice and responsive – it just won't handle the latest games.

So all-in-all it is a very capable and tidy system. The one drawback seems to be the pricing, which currently stands at £649.98. This does feel like a lot for a small, mobile-powered mini-PC. Consumers may wish to consider the DT.SYYEK.016 Revo One, which is almost identical – there is just no boot SSD and ‘only' 2TB storage as standard, rather than 4TB. This model is available for £479.99, which does seem more reasonable.

So on that basis, I have to withhold the highest award from this particular Revo One as it is rather pricey. Still, it is a very good little system and I would encourage readers who may be looking at a mini-PC (for either media or general tasks) to seriously consider a Revo One – even if it may not be this exact model.

You can buy the Revo One RL85 DT.SYYEK.013 for £649.98 inc VAT from Ebuyer.

Pros

  • Small and attractive mini-PC
  • Two swappable drive bays
  • Core i5 is a good performer
  • Supports dual-monitor setups

Cons

  • Rather expensive for what you get

KitGuru says: The Revo One is a well-built mini-PC, and packs in a fair amount of grunt into its small chassis. The only downside is the price, which seems rather steep for a mobile-powered system.

Intel Corp.’s NUC [next unit of computing] small form-factor PCs offer decent performance and are rather small. Unfortunately, such systems come with limited choice of processors and cannot be upgraded. By contrast, mini-ITX systems support all types of CPUs, can be upgraded, but are considerably larger. In a bid to offer small dimensions and a choice of CPUs, Intel proposes a new mini PC form-factor: 5×5.

Intel’s 5×5 is an all new form-factor for upgradable personal computers that has around 0.85 liters volume and around 39mm height. The core component of the 5×5 platform is a new mainboard with 140mm*147mm (5.5”×5.8”) dimensions, around 30 per cent smaller than mini-ITX, but considerably larger compared to motherboards inside NUCs. The mainboard has an LGA socket, two SO-DIMM slots, an M.2 connector for solid-state drives, a port to plug Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card, a SATA port, two USB 3.0 connectors, two HDMI outputs, Gigabit Ethernet and so on.

intel_5x5

According to Intel, 5×5 mainboards will support all processors with 35W and 65W thermal design power, which gives a broad choice of components to system integrators or end-users. Unfortunately, the Intel 5×5 platform does not support any PCIe x16 slots for graphics cards, unlike mini-ITX, which will prevent gamers from adopting such systems.

The newly-announced Intel 5×5 form-factor will require new PC chassis and new CPU coolers. However, it will provide PC makers and DIY end-users with a lot of flexibility in terms of possible configurations, something that NUC simply does not offer. It is unlikely that a lot of people upgrade SFF PCs in general, but an ability to install different processors is an important feature.

intel_5x5_1

At the Intel Developer Forum 2015 the chip designer demonstrated a prototype of a 5×5 mainboard equipped with an LGA1150 socket for “Haswell” and “Broadwell” processors. Commercial systems will likely feature LGA1151 sockets for higher-performing “Skylake” central processing units. Moreover, Intel might consider adding its “Alpine Ridge” controller to the design in order to enable USB 3.1 type-C and Thunderbolt connectivity. Such port could allow addition of ultra-fast solid-state drives and external graphics solutions, something that gamers and creative professionals will appreciate.

Intel does not reveal when the first 5×5 systems are set to hit the market, but it is possible that the first PCs adopting the new form-factor will become available already next year if Intel starts to produce 5×5 mainboards itself or persuades makers of motherboards to make such products.

KitGuru Says: Intel’s 5×5 form-factor sits between mini-ITX and NUC. It is not as flexible as the former and is not as small as the latter. The only tangible benefit that the 5×5 has over NUCs is a wide choice of microprocessors, which is good, but is it enough for the industry to embrace a new standard? The new 5×5 platform makes a great sense from Intel's business point of view. The amount of Intel's content per one 5×5 box can be extremely high (an expensive LGA CPU with high-performance integrated graphics, an SSD, network and USB controllers [should Intel decide to integrate “Alpine Ridge”], etc.). Furthermore, inability to upgrade graphics sub-system will force consumers who demand better performance in video games to switch the entire box instead of just graphics adapter, which shrinks upgrade cycles. But will the industry bite? Only time will tell.
