Mitsubishi have released the 2012 i-MiEV at under $30,000 – the least expensive all electric car targeting the American market.

The car is a five door model with a 126 miles per gallon equivalent rating from the federal government in city driving. This is higher than the Nissan Leaf, at 106 mpg.

The rear wheel drive i-MiEV has been warmly reviewed by critics who say it has speed sensitive steering that works really well. The brakes are also said to be strong with a ‘realistic' feel. It takes between seven and 22 hours to fully recharge, depending on the charger used.

The entry level $29,975 model has a 66 horsepower electric motor, with a 16 kilowatt lithium ion storage battery and a one speed direct drive transmission.

The car is eligible for a one time federal tax income credit of $7,500. Buyers in America have to wait until they file their tax documents for the calendar year before claiming the credit. The car also has air conditioner, stability control, six air bags and traction control. It also has keyless entry and power windows with a 360 watt sound system on board.

Kitguru says: Sales should be good for this relatively inexpensive electric car.
