O2 users began experiencing troubles yesterday, as the UK network experienced exceptional downtime. Fortunately, the day-long outage has come to an end as customers report the ability to go online and services return to normal.

A staggering 32 million UK residents were directly affected as a result of the interruption, either through O2 or third-party providers that piggyback the same network – such as Tesco and Sky. O2 also provides a range of services that suffered as a result, from Oyster card readers to security systems that rely on GSM (Global System for Mobile communications).

“The cause of today's network issue is in certain nodes in the core network resulting in network disturbances for a limited number of customers across the world, including in the UK,” explains Swedish telecoms company Ericsson, which provides the software blamed for the problem. “We have been working hard on resolving the UK data issue since early this morning. The faulty software that has caused these issues is being decommissioned.”

Ericsson and O2 issued a joint apology reading that they “fully appreciate it's been a poor experience and we are really sorry,” while the former conducts “a complete and comprehensive root cause analysis.” Ericsson will undoubtedly be pressured by O2 and the third-parties affected for reassurance as well as potential compensation, while customers remain unclear whether or not they will see recompense.

O2 will be facing scrutiny from its customers in the coming months, as the company is pressured to implement more countermeasures in future. Unfortunately, Huawei remains one of the only competitors on the market, which has been shunned from BT’s core network.

KitGuru Says: This is a particularly sore spot for those that suffered loss of earnings during the downtime, but I can’t say it’s been pleasant for anyone as an O2 customer myself. Personally, I would be happy with reassurance that it won’t happen again but reimbursement wouldn’t go amiss either. Were you affected by the outage?

Hutchinson Whampoa, the parent company of UK mobile network, Three,  has confirmed that it is hosting “executive negotiations” with Telefonica to acquire O2 for £10.25 billion. This news comes just a few days after rumors of a potential purchase began to fly around.

In a statement from Hutchinson, a company spokesperson said that these negotiations will take place over a few weeks: “Hutchison Whampoa, parent company of UK telecom operator Three UK, announced that it has entered into exclusive negotiations with Telefónica over a period of several weeks for the potential acquisition of Telefónica's UK subsidiary, O2 UK.”

The deal would involve £9.25 billion in cash along with deferred interest payments of up to £1 billion. Sky and TalkTalk were also previously reported to have been looking to acquire the O2 mobile network in an attempt to compete in the mobile market.

However, if Three were to purchase O2 it would suddenly become the largest network in the UK and as a result, this acquisition will likely be opposed by other networks as well as anti-trust watch dogs. O2 was previously due to be purchased by BT last year but the company opted to acquire EE instead.

KitGuru Says: If O2 were to be acquired by Three then it would become the biggest network in the UK, overtaking EE. This will likely raise some anti-competitive concerns as the UK market would have a significantly reduced number of major mobile networks available.

The UK's four largest networks, EE, O2, Vodafone and Three have all agreed to work together to improve the country's patchy coverage areas by 2017. These particular coverage spots can often receive a signal from one or two networks, while those tied to other companies will find themselves without signal.

The four big networks are aiming to halve the number of areas where only one or two networks can receive a signal over the next two years, which should greatly improve reception- particularly in rural areas. Full coverage will be boosted from 69 per cent to 85 per cent by 2017.

Total blackout spots will also see a significant reduction, with two thirds of them disappearing. This proposal will reportedly see £5 billion invested in to the network infrastructure.

This is likely a response to the government attempting to pass legislation that would allow UK phone owners to switch between networks whenever they can't receive a signal. Rather than letting that law come to pass, the networks settled and decided to do more on their part to improve coverage- as they should.

KitGuru Says: While it is nice to see the networks put a plan in place, there is no guaranteeing that they will deliver. We see broadband companies making plans to improve infrastructure all of the time and we often see them miss deadlines or in some cases, give up entirely.

One of MSDN's most recent blogs goes into detail about Microsoft's efforts to vastly improve wireless connectivity in Windows 8 to the point of even providing native connectivity support for 3G and 4G networking.

As it stands now, specialized applications from hardware providers are required for mobile connectivity. The idea of Windows 8 being able to handle everything on its own (including built-in data activation and usage tools) would make for much more simplified and seamless connectivity.

I can see many other positives of going this route as well, one of which would make Windows 8 intelligent enough to automatically disable the mobile connection when a recognized WiFi network is within range.

Check out the video below for a demonstration on how it's all coming along.

Kitguru says: Yet another sign to suggest Microsoft's best OS ever is on the horizon?
