Larian has already surpassed all expectations with the current version of Baldur's Gate 3 on PC and consoles but the studio isn't done adding new content yet. This year, the game will be getting official mod support, which will be cross-platform compatible, enabling console players to install mods for the first time.

PC players will already have access to a wealth of mods for the game via sites like Nexusmods. For now, console players are missing out on that content but as confirmed by Larian this week, they've been working on cross-platform mod support, which I imagine will work similarly to the cross-platform mods available for Bethesda games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim.

This update should also come with official mod tools, which will hopefully include an editor to allow users to create their own quests but we'll have to wait and see.

The system Larian has built still needs to be tested, so it could be a few months before this is all ready to roll out to the public.

KitGuru Says: Official mod support is coming and hopefully that also means tools for more comprehensive mods. Given its popularity, Baldur's Gate 3 will likely stand the test of time anyway, but as we've seen with games like Skyrim, a healthy modding community can only enhance the longevity of the game.

Bethesda has been releasing updates to Starfield since its release in September, mainly consisting of bug fixes and minor tweaks. However, the company recently announced that a major game update will be released early next year, addressing “in-progress” blocked quests. In addition, the developer also shared what the future holds for Bethesda's latest AAA title, including FSR 3, XeSS, mod support, city maps, and new travel methods.

To complement the fixes to “in-progress” blocked quests, the studio developed a new system to correct them without users having to roll back their saves. Furthermore, the early 2024 update will include Intel XeSS and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3). New gaming features such as maps that provide meaningful information while touring towns, PC editing tools, and in-game mod support will also be added in 2024.

Bethesda has also hinted at new ways of travelling in Starfield, although what this will entail remains to be seen. The first thing that comes to mind would be new vehicles, like a space rover for passengers.

The company has stated that these features will be released regularly, with fixes and updates expected every six weeks. However, they caution that they will only release hotfixes if they are safe for the game. In their words, “In a game this huge and active, we take a long time to test even the tiniest modification”. Finally, Bethesda plans to extend the game's narrative, although they have not yet announced a date forthe first story DLC.

While there is no official mod support for Halo: Reach on PC yet, Microsoft is keen to let players tinker around as soon as possible. To enable this, Halo: Reach on PC will have the option to disable anti-cheat, giving you the chance to play around with mods in private custom matches, as well as in the campaign.

Over on the Halo subreddit, one 343 Industries developer talked about how things will work at launch. While the team is “working to improve this down the road”, there is the option to bypass anti-cheat at launch to play with early mods. However, you will not be able to play online matchmaking games while doing this, so it is recommended that you keep backups of the game files so you can switch between the modded version and the normal version for online multiplayer.

Mod support is already a big part of Halo's history, with the original game still getting newly made modifications to this day. With the prevalence of online matchmaking and ranked competitive play nowadays, Microsoft needs to be a bit more careful in its approach but so far, we are getting off to a promising start with The Master Chief Collection.

There is no word on when ‘official' mod support will arrive but it will likely be much later down the line, as there are still several games that need to be brought to the PC version of MCC first.

Yesterday PC gamers rejoiced when Final Fantasy XV was finally announced for the platform. At the time, Square Enix promised that this would be the ultimate version of the game but that will stretch beyond graphical changes. Final Fantasy XV director, Hajime Tabata has confirmed that he is still planning to bring mod support to the PC version of the game.

Speaking with Rockpapershotgun at Gamescom today, Tabata explained that “one of the biggest things PC players can expect is mod support”. He then went on to add that right now, the team hasn't nailed down their mod policy yet or finished discussing the ins and outs of it but full details should be on the way soon.

Here is the full quote: “I think one of the biggest things PC players can expect is mod support. We definitely want to do it. We haven’t actually managed to get our full modding policy or discussions on that finished but at the moment we do really want to do it. We’ll have the full details around autumn time.”

“I think that whether we do it afterwards or have it at launch itself is something that depends on development… but I think we can try to get the modding into it as quick as possible.”

Now it’s all well and good saying a game will have mod support but how limited or open that will be depends on the developer and the tools made available. Fortunately, Tabata seems to understand that PC gamers want mods to be “as free as possible” with “as few limitations” as possible. Right now, the development team is looking in to how to achieve that, so hopefully we will here more on that front soon.

Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition launches on Steam, Windows 10 and Origin in ‘early 2018’ with all released DLC so far. Whether or not mod support will be available at launch remains to be seen but at least it is actively being worked on.

KitGuru Says: If Square Enix can match Bethesda’s level of openness when it comes to mod support for Final Fantasy XV, then this could end up being a very exciting release. What sort of mods would you like to see in Final Fantasy XV? Personally I’d be very excited to see some user-generated quest lines.

Just recently, Hello Games finally broke its silence and started patching No Man's Sky again. Things started off with the Foundation update, which focussed on base building and now this week, PC players will be getting a new patch focussing on mod support. This update should make it easier for mods to be installed and not be broken by future updates.

Aside from some mod support fixing, patch 1.12 also fixes some SLI issues, though users will need to disable TAA for things to run properly.

no-mans-sky-screenshot-e1480094071190

Here are the full patch notes:

  • [PC] Following reports of some people experiencing issues with the game while unsupported mods are installed, we’ve added mod detection which will show a warning screen on loading when mods are detected. A mouse click or button press will dismiss this screen. We have also introduced a new method for mod installation which should prevent player’s games from breaking when a new update is released. For details please see the ‘DISABLEMODS.TXT’ file in the \GAMEDATA\PCBANKS folder.
  • [PC] Allowed remapping of the build menu and quick menu commands to support Azerty keyboards.
  • [PC] We’ve enabled a temporary workaround for the SLI issues people are experiencing. If you are running in SLI, please disable TAA and the game should run. We are looking into a more permanent solution to this issue.
  • Fixed an issue which, in some rare cases, prevented NPCs from giving you mission critical dialogue.
  • Fixed a bug which could cause core items to be transferred from exosuit inventory to starship inventory.
  • Fixed a number of rare crashes (if you continue to experience crashes, please send a crash report and include your crash dumps).
  • [PC] Fix for monitor detection on PCs with 3rd party remote desktop or screen sharing applications.
  • [PC] Running the game via the .exe file should no longer give Steam Init errors.
  • Fixed an issue where underwater buildings could spawn without doors which in rare cases would mean the NPC missions could not be completed. (Note: If you are still being pointed to missing facilities during the NPC questlines, you can either claim a new base and re-build the NPC terminal, or if you have a Freighter, remove the NPC terminal from your base and rebuild it in the Freighter. The NPC should then give you new coordinates. We are still working on a more permanent fix for this issue).

Its not as big as the Foundation Update, but its a decent interim update to keep things running well until the next big feature patch, which we will hopefully start hearing about soon.

KitGuru Says: I don't see myself jumping back into No Man's Sky personally but I am glad to see the game getting important updates like this for those who still own the game and may want to play again. Have any of you tried No Man's Sky again since the last update?

Treyarch has said plenty of times in the lead up to Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 that it is setting out to make an excellent PC game. Now, it seems that the studio is going the extra mile to make good on that, by announcing mod support and custom map tools, both of which will arrive early next year after the game'a launch this week. These tools will be tested in March next year.

PC gamers often appreciate the inclusion of map making tools and mods when it comes to most games, which Treyarch knows given that mod and map tool support is often one of its most requested features.

Black-Ops-3_Stronghold_Broken-Arrow_WM

Obviously you won't be able to run mods on ranked servers. However, Treyarch plans to give PC gamers the tools to set up their own dedicated community servers, on which they can do whatever they choose. Things could take a while though, testing will enter the closed alpha phase in March next year, so who knows when the final product will arrive.

With these tools, Treyarch wants users to be able to make their own maps and game modes so this could very well end up being the best Call of Duty PC game to date. More information is due to arrive at some point in the future but for now, you will be able to grab the base game on the 4th of November.

KitGuru Says: This is actually pretty exciting news and may end up winning some PC gamers back to the series. Do any of you still play Call of Duty on the PC? What do you think of this announcement from Treyarch?

The Witcher 3 has had some basic mod support since it first launched. Creators were able to dig around the files and make tweaks to quite a bit of the game. CD Projekt Red wanted to make this easier, so it launched ‘ModKit' last week, so creators could replace models and mess around with things in a nice software package.

However, the ModKit isn't on quite the same level as the REDKit, which we saw launch with The Witcher 2. It seems that many were hoping for more advanced modding tools for The Witcher 3, allowing for mod creation on the level of Skyrim. CD Projekt Red spurred these hopes on last year, when it mentioned releasing a REDKit for The Witcher 3, in an interview with IGN.

2922742-modkit

Between that interview taking place and now, things have changed. While CD Projekt Red was apparently planning to release advanced mod support last year, this is no longer the case. The studio's community manager, Marcin Momot broke the news on Twitter over the weekend, when a fan asked for an ETA on a full featured TW3 REDKit.

“Any ETA yet for a Full Featured TW3 REDkit? Maybe after the AddOn's? Or is this (no offense) everything we get?” Momot replied to the tweet, saying: “This is the mod support for the Wild Hunt. At this moment we are not planning to release anything else.”

KitGuru Says: Skyrim has enjoyed the lengthy life that it has thanks to the continuous mod support. Sure, The Witcher 3 is a fantastic game but people aren't going to keep coming back over the years to play the exact same game over and over again. Advanced modding tools would have allowed for custom maps, quests and entirely new original content, which likely would have extended the life of the game significantly, as we have seen with Skyrim.

Studio Wildcard, the team behind the most recent early access survival game success story, ARK: Survival Evolved, has just released modding tools for the game. Since ARK runs on Unreal Engine 4, the developer teamed up with Epic Games to create mod support and tools for the community currently playing the game.

This means we will see custom content popping up for the game pretty early on as it has only been out for around one month. The title also has Steam Workshop support, which will make installing mods easier for those who don't like messing around with files in the game directory.

ARK: Survival Evolved has blown up over the last few weeks and has had a huge presence on both Twitch and YouTube, which adds to the amount of hype surrounding this game. It has already sold one million copies at around $29.99/£19 each so it has already become a pretty huge success despite not being finished yet.

It's essentially a survival game with RPG elements in the form of an upgrade tree and stat boosters. Players are put in this big open world inhabited by dinosaurs and they have to learn their way around, build bases, harvest food and you can also tame the dinosaurs you find. You can also start up tribes, which will allow you to find your friends easier. You will also be able to spawn at Tribe owned locations with a bed in place, which can be pretty useful.

If you happen to be a modder yourself, you can find all of the details, HERE.

Microsoft's E3 press conference has only been going for about half an hour but they really are killing it. Following the surprise announcement of backwards compatibility for  Xbox 360 titles on the Xbox One, Bethesda's Todd Howard took to the stage to talk about Fallout 4.

At that moment, many viewers were likely expecting platform exclusive DLC but no, instead Microsoft has made it possible for the Xbox One to support PC mods with Fallout 4, a feature console owners have been missing out on for years.

Screen-Shot-2015-06-03-at-15.06.00-e14333403867491

It makes perfect sense to kick off this feature with Bethesda as well, as titles like Skyrim and Fallout 3 have been a hit with modders for years. Aside from that, not much is known about how this feature works but we have been promised that Fallout 4 players on the Xbox will be able to browse and download PC mods.

It is worth noting that this all links back to Bethesda Net, the studio's new hub for mods. The new Doom title has a similar feature for consoles, with a level editor built in to the game, allowing users to share modded maps and challenges with those on other platforms.

A surprise game announcement landed on our doorstep this week. It looks like XCOM 2 is in the works and will be launching on the PC with procedural maps and mod support this November. XCOM 2 will be a sequel to the previously released, highly praised strategy title, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which received two expansions over the course of its release.

The sequel takes place twenty years after the events of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, at a time where aliens have solidified their place as rulers of the Earth. You're job is to win the planet back with a team of specialists.

XCOM

There is currently no word on console versions or tablet versions of the game although Mac OS X and Linux versions of XCOM 2 are being made. According to the official announcement, XCOM 2 is aiming to push the visual, gameplay and replayability boundaries of a strategy game- which is saying something, considering that XCOM: Enemy Unknown was already highly replayable.

This announcement came ahead of the E3 rush in a couple of weeks time. Maybe we will see some gameplay then.

The MMO variant of Final Fantasy could soon be receiving mod support, along with Final Fantasy XV cross-over content, according to the game's director and producer, Naoki Yoshida. The development team has listened to the player base calling for mod support and is now working on it.

Speaking with GameSpot at GDC, Yoshida said: “We’re working on mod support UI integration for those who are looking into modding. We’ve heard people and their desire for mod support and we acknowledge that. We’re working towards implementing it”.

final-fantasy-xiv-a-realm-reborn-1419408218

Players can also expect more legacy items and instances to make their way over to Final Fantasy XIV, including content from the upcoming Final Fantasy XV: “Every time we try to come up with ideas to incorporate elements from the Final Fantasy franchise and how to implement it in XIV, it’s not just about literally bringing the element in but making sure it’s enjoyable and integrates into the world.”

“The people who are familiar with the content and as well as those who haven’t had a chance to play the original games must have fun with it. Seeing people who are familiar with the content talking about it, we’re hoping it will get new players interested in playing previous Final Fantasy games.”

Exactly what content from Final Fantasy XV will make its way over to the MMO is still up for debate. Yoshida is currently in talks with the Final Fantasy XV director about it.

Saints Row IV is getting official modding support today as Volition Studios has released a software development kit to get the community started. The kit includes weapon models for the upcoming Gat out of Hell expansion pack, meaning we could see modded versions of new weapons before they are even officially released.

Saints Row IV already has an established modding scene but until now, content creators have been limited to what is in the game- the official SDK will allow for completely custom creations. Currently, there is no Steam Workshop support so you'll have to browse various websites and forums to find new content.

This release seems to be mostly aimed at weapon modifications rather than allowing users to create their own missions, change up the gameplay or even the map itself. If you're interested in modding yourself then there are tutorials around on the Saints Row Mods forums, such as this one.

KitGuru Says: Saints Row IV was a pretty fun game although the super powers included made it rather easy. Now that this SDK has been released, it might be worth installing again to check out all of the new mods. Have any of you guys ever created a mod for a game? I used to spend hours installing and  testing mods for Knights of the Old Republic myself but I never attempted to make my own.
