Despite what the rumours had suggested, Call of Duty’s annualised train has continued to truck along, recently releasing what was initially intended to be DLC as a full blown ‘premium’ experience in the form of Modern Warfare III. This latest entry has been mocked for its seemingly slapdash campaign, it's uninventive multiplayer suite of remade maps and a Zombies mode which eschews the ‘all-important’ round-based gameplay loop, instead taking the new Warzone map and slapping the barest of coatings of zombified paint on top. With all that said, MW3 has introduced a new gameplay function which may have just changed the first person shooter genre forever – akin to the creation of aiming down sight – the tactical stance.

You may think this to be hyperbole but I genuinely believe that what the folks at Sledgehammer Games have done with the newly introduced ‘tac stance’ could revolutionise the way all future first person shooters are designed. First thing’s first, let's go back a bit.

While Call of Duty may be seen as a stale and overdone series whose industry contributions peaked well over a decade ago, each successive entry has done more than you think to evolve and refine its gameplay – by far the most important element in a multiplayer shooter. Of course, one of COD’s first big moments of impact was the way it popularised aiming down sights. While in no way the first game to do so, 2003’s Call of Duty did have a pivotal role in the universal adoption of this functionality – so much so that it became the industry standard, adding an extra degree of dynamism and choice to any and all combat encounters.

Thanks to the invention of aiming down sights, players now had two different ways to shoot at an enemy – both equally as important and effective in the appropriate circumstances.

Aiming down sights allows you to target the enemy with precision, tightening the spread of bullets and offering a clear point of impact. Of course, in doing so you give up some level of manoeuvrability, preventing the player from sprinting and tightening their field of view – making you more vulnerable should you miss your shots. Additionally, the process of aiming down sights takes some time to activate. While merely a matter of milliseconds, it's these precious moments which can make the difference between life and death.

Alternatively, you could try and hipfire. This helps to maintain your momentum and movement capabilities but at the great cost of accuracy. Depending on your gun of choice and its attachments, hipfire spread means that you are able to shoot much faster, but are less likely to hit the target as precisely, relegating it to being utilised primarily in close quarter situations, or as a panic spray. Furthermore, if you're using a controller, each of these states have differing levels of aim assist, with ADS-ing allowing for a much stickier targeting system. But again, in the time it takes you to aim down sights and fire, the enemy might have sprayed a dozen or so bullets your way using hipfire – and if enough of them hit, well, then you're probably dead.

The introduction of aiming down sights did so much more for the FPS genre than one might first initially assume, especially when it comes to competing online against others. Adding this second branch of gameplay allows for significantly greater tactical opportunities and choices at any given encounter, be it a 1v1, a 2v1 or any other infinite number of combinations. This is why I believe the invention of a 3rd branch of gunplay (aka the tac stance) is so revolutionary.

For the uninitiated, the tactical stance – or tac stance – is a new alternate fire mode which when engaged changes the ADS toggle to a pretty cool looking left-sided stance and instead of bringing up your red dot sight or irons, your crosshairs compress and compact themselves to a much tighter spread while simultaneously offering a greater and more clear field of view when compared to standard ADS-ing (while also affecting aim-assist in its own unique way). Of course, As with the others, the tac stance does not come without compromises.

While significantly more accurate than hipfiring, you do not have that same level of pin-point precision that one could achieve with aiming down the sights. That being said, thanks to the decrease in time it takes to tac stance it can be highly beneficial in a number of scenarios. In fact, when it comes to Call of Duty, many of the engagements you’ll find yourself in are typically just a bit too far away to hipfire, but close enough that unless you’re using a submachine gun with a rapid ADS time, precious moments would be wasted by the time you can accurately fire at the opponent. The tac stance is perfect for these medium range encounters without removing the functionality of both ADS and hipfiring at the same distance.

The inclusion of the tac stance is purely additive and makes for 50% more opportunities and possibilities when engaging in any and all combat scenarios. As with both hipfire and aiming down sights, you can adjust the speed and effectiveness of your tac stance speed and spread using attachments, allowing you greater freedom in the ways you construct your loadout.

Thanks to the tac stance, players now have a great deal more opportunities to use different weapons in more varied scenarios. Worried about running around with an LMG due to just how long it takes to aim down sights? Tac stance can help you maintain viability even at medium or close ranges. Of course, the tac stance isn’t the be-all-end-all of first person shooters – it is simply another vital tool in a player’s arsenal.

Another way to look at the tac stance is to compare it to typical 3rd-person shooting mechanics. Despite staying in first-person, your weapon’s spread, recoil and handling functions much closer to that seen with 3rd-person games. One of the reasons for this is likely due to the fact that Modern Warfare 3 actually fully incorporated a 3rd-person mode into the game.

While it can sometimes be limited by the playlist you’re in, the likes of the Zombies mode allows for you to seamlessly switch between first and 3rd person at will. In doing so, your character now controls and handles like most other 3rd person shooters – just like with tac stance. While the introduction of the tac stance can quite clearly be traced to the newly introduced 3rd person mode, its origins actually stretch just a little bit further back.

2022’s Modern Warfare II brought with it the ‘canted laser sight’ which suspiciously would have your character aim their weapon in a left-leaning manner while using the laser to target enemies instead of your typical iron sights. Used mostly during night maps, the team at Sledgehammer Games clearly realised that the gameplay alterations brought about by the canted laser sight had significantly greater potential than it initially seemed. Using the canted laser sight as a base and combining it with the new 3rd-person mode’s ADS functionality has led to a vital additional ‘tactic’ which one could use whenever they deem fit or necessary.

Call of Duty has always been one of the faster-paced first person shooters, with the run-and-gun nature of the game going as far back as 2003’s Call of Duty 1. Not since that very first title do I believe that COD has introduced a mechanic as impactful as the tac stance. Yes, we have seen some pretty major gameplay additions over the years, from dolphin diving to sliding – and now both. The impact and potential of the tac stance is such that it now serves as a new umbrella mechanic which functions above the other additions. What I mean by this is that the tac stance doesn’t exist in its own little bubble, it works on top of and alongside other mechanics such as sliding – changing the gameplay and timings in a rather drastic manner.

Since the launch of MW3 we have seen more and more players slowly come to the realisation that the tac stance has a genuinely greater number of applications than initially thought. At launch, hardly any players seemed to use it with many even deeming it to be a useless gimmick, but having had an eye on the tac stance since before the game launched, it was one of the first new additions which I experimented with – and unsurprisingly I was crushing it in the multiplayer. As mentioned, medium range encounters saw me dropping enemies before they even had the chance to aim down sight. As more and more players have come to the realisation that the tac stance is much more than a visual difference, the competitive landscape of COD has evolved somewhat. The more people discover the benefits to using tac stance, the more exciting and dynamic encounters become.

As a huge and immediate fan of the tac stance, I hope more and more people come to find its many benefits, ultimately including the functionality in their moment-to-moment gameplay. If the feature finds enough of an audience then we will likely see more FPS games adopt the mechanic. Call of Duty is a trend setter, but unfortunately they also rarely add new underlying mechanics to the formula – and when they do it is normally gone by the next game.

The tactical stance genuinely has the potential to change the way first person shooters are played forever, and so I believe that should the tac stance return for 2024’s COD (or as long as another franchise implements a similar feature) then it could solidify itself as a staple of the genre, I’ll be curious to see whether the industry ends up adopting the tac stance. For my sake – and the sake of the FPS genre – I hope so.

Last year with the launch of Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward presented us with its take on the emerging ‘extraction shooter' genre with DMZ. Now one year on, support for the mode is being dropped.

As part of a new roadmap post for Modern Warfare 3's first season and content update plans, it has been confirmed that DMZ will not be getting any further updates. The content currently available within DMZ, including the currently in-game maps and missions, will continue to be accessible via COD HQ, or within Modern Warfare 2. However, the mode will not be carrying forward into the next version of Call of Duty Warzone, or Modern Warfare 3.

There will be no further content updates for DMZ and any progress made in the mode will not count towards Modern Warfare 3's battle pass.

Of course, this does not necessarily mean the end of an extraction mode within Call of Duty. Prior to Call of Duty Warzone, Treyarch experimented with its own battle royale mode called Blackout. We could see a similar situation here, where the developers take note of what worked with DMZ and then bring a similar mode back with all the improvements in place.

KitGuru Says: While initially billed as an alternative to games like Escape from Tarkov, DMZ just didn't have enough action and often felt quite empty. Still, I would like to see an improved, similar mode return in a future COD game at some point down the line, especially if we can get a similar leap to the one we had from Blackout to Warzone.

There's been a great deal of discourse surrounding the recently-released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Initially internally pitched as DLC for 2022’s MW2, the game was ultimately sold as a separate full-priced package. Of course, being Call of Duty, the game was undoubtedly going to sell well, and while we don’t yet have any official figures, the game has supposedly set new “engagement records.”

Taking to Twitter, the official Call of Duty page released a statement, saying “Thank you to our #MW3 community for setting new Modern Warfare engagement records.”

Expanding upon this, lead multiplayer studio Sledgehammer Games said “Thank you for a historic launch. Just two weeks in, MWIII has already set records with the highest engagement in the new Modern Warfare trilogy!”

Call of Duty is not one to shy away from sharing its financial success, and so the fact that engagement was used as the only metric seems to suggest that the game hasn’t sold quite as many copies as the last two MW entries.

That said, in a live-service Battle Pass-filled world, engagement is in many ways just as important as the number of copies sold, and so it will be interesting to see whether interest continues to be held over the next year.

The video game industry has – particularly in the past – been notorious for its toxicity when it comes to online gaming and voice chats. Being one of the biggest franchises in gaming, Call of Duty has always struggled to get some of its users to reign in such behaviour. The latest initiative by Activision sees the anti-toxicity team implement a new real-time voice chat moderation feature using AI to detect negative behaviour.

Making the announcement on their blog, the ‘Call of Duty staff’ said “Call of Duty’s new voice chat moderation system utilizes ToxMod, the AI-Powered voice chat moderation technology from Modulate, to identify in real-time and enforce against toxic speech—including hate speech, discriminatory language, harassment and more.”

They continued, “This new development will bolster the ongoing moderation systems led by the Call of Duty anti-toxicity team, which includes text-based filtering across 14 languages for in-game text (chat and usernames) as well as a robust in-game player reporting system.”

While the global release of this new initiative will go live with the launch of Call of Duty Modern Warfare III on the 10th of November, a beta of the new system is being tested right now in the US within Modern Warfare II and Warzone.

While using AI to detect toxicity could do a lot of good for the online space, there is the fear that it could flag up a bunch of false-positives. It’ll be interesting to see how this beta period goes – and whether this new tool ends up doing more good than harm. We will have to wait and see.

Ahead of the game’s release on the 10th of November, the team have now confirmed that we will finally get to see what multiplayer looks like – alongside an update to the future of Warzone – on the 5th of October.

Making the announcement on their blog, the ‘Call of Duty Staff’ detailed when we would next be getting new info on the upcoming first-person shooter, saying “With the help of Call of Duty developers and community representatives, Call of Duty: Next is the premier showcase for Modern Warfare III Multiplayer, a look forward to what’s coming to Call of Duty: Warzone, as well as a livestream where updates from Call of Duty’s mobile experiences will be shared.”

They continued, “More intel on Call of Duty: Next will be shared in the coming weeks. However, be sure to save the date – October 5, 2023 – for this epic event.”

While many people do buy Call of Duty for its campaign, the multiplayer experience has always served as the franchise’s bread and butter, and so it will be interesting to see what gameplay changes have been made since 2022’s Modern Warfare 2.

The reboot of Modern Warfare back in 2019 was met with a great deal of praise, due to the game running on a highly updated engine and offering a solid campaign. Last year’s Modern Warfare II saw a drop in its critical reception for various reasons. Though it was previously announced that there would be no new COD game this year – instead being replaced by an expansion – this is no longer the case, with Call of Duty Modern Warfare III set to be officially announced later this year.

As reported by Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, this year’s Call of Duty will be a standalone release, dubbed Call of Duty Modern Warfare III and will function as its own separate game from last year's MWII – despite what previous rumours claimed.

According to Insider Gaming, this upcoming release is being developed by Sledgehammer Games and will include a full campaign; multiplayer; Zombies and a new Battle Royale Map for Warzone 2.0.

Henderson also offered full details on the game’s key pre-launch dates, namely:

  1. Beta weekend 1 (PS4/PS5): October 6, 2023 – October 10, 2023
  2. Beta weekend 2 (PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S/PC): October 12, 2023 – October 16, 2023
  3. Campaign Early Access (PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S/PC): November 2, 2023
  4. Full Release (PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S/PC): November 10, 2023
  5. Season 1 Launch / New Warzone Map: December 5, 2023

Activision’s insistence on having a new Call of Duty every single year has not panned out well in the past, with many games launching to a less-than-stellar reception. This has been especially true for Sledgehammer’s Games – though in fairness the studio is seemingly constantly having their plans changed by upper management, and so it is not surprising to see that their games sometimes come out half-baked. Despite the evidence pointing otherwise, hopefully this isn’t the case.

Last year, it was widely reported that Activision would be skipping Call of Duty in 2023, instead opting for a premium expansion for Modern Warfare 2 with new maps to refresh the game for another year. Somewhere along the way, Activision seemed to scrap this idea in favour of turning the expansion into its own full-fledged game.

This week, Insider Gaming sources claimed that this year's Call of Duty will be revealed in August, an unusually late reveal for the franchise, which typically unveils new games in the early summer each year.

Interestingly, an additional leak has claimed more details. While Sledgehammer started off working on an expansion for Modern Warfare 2, it is now claimed that this year's game will be a full sequel to Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2, and it will be titled Modern Warfare 3.

According to the schedule leak, the announcement will come in August, followed by a round of beta tests in October. Then, the game should fully release in November.

KitGuru Says: Given how widely it has been reported that this year's Call of Duty was supposed to be DLC for the current game, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a little extra scrutiny hovering over this year's release.

After spending years away from the platform, Activision finally announced that it would bring all future published titles to Steam. This began with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II late last year and since then we have seen a number of missing Activision titles added to the platform. Though not the full library of missing games, a number of older Call of Duty titles have finally been brought over to Steam.

Available to purchase on Steam right now, Activision has brought over its 3 most recent Call of Duty entries, namely 2019’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare; 2020’s COD Black Ops Cold War and then 2021’s Call of Duty Vanguard. All three titles are currently on sale for 50% off, meaning you can get your hands on each of these games for £24.99 a pop.

With the addition of these three entries, there only remains a few COD titles which have yet to be added – those being Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered.

While each Call of Duty game does stand on its own merits, it is typical for the COD fanbase to move from game to game each time a new entry is released, and so the inclusion of these prior titles is somewhat less significant than it may initially appear.

Still, it is welcome nonetheless to see that slowly but surely all of Activision’s previously-exclusive titles are being unshackled from the Battle.net store.

For months now, we've been hearing that Activision plans to release an expansion for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 this year, in lieu of a brand new Call of Duty game. As it turns out, those plans have now changed. According to new reports, Sledgehammer's expansion has since grown into its own game.

Last year, it was claimed that Activision would not release a new Call of Duty game in 2023, but would instead look to expand Modern Warfare 2, giving Infinity Ward's latest another year on the market and a fresh injection of content in the form of new multiplayer maps and campaign content.

Now according to insider-gaming, this ‘premium DLC' developed by Sledgehammer Games has now expanded into its own game. It may still end up being a Modern Warfare title, but it won't be sold as an expansion for MW2. Apparently, there is some discussion as to whether or not to title it ‘Modern Warfare 3'.

Insider-gaming also seems to have inside knowledge of planned beta tests for this year's Call of Duty. Apparently we'll get the first beta weekend in October, followed by early access to the campaign for pre-order customers on the 2nd of November. The full release will then take place on the 10th of November.

Season 1 of Call of Duty MWII / Warzone 2.0 feels like it has only just begun, and yet we are already hearing about Infinity Ward’s plans for the game’s second season. Months ahead of its launch, the key art for Season 2 of MWII has leaked, revealing among other things, one of the DLC maps coming with the update.

As reported by Ralph Valve via ‘What if Gaming’ Season 2 of MWII / Warzone 2.0 will be bringing with it some familiar faces and places, as the World at War classic map ‘Castle’ is seemingly making a return – thanks to the leakage of some key artwork for the game’s second Season.

That is not all however, as the art also reveals that Warcom operator, ‘Ronin’ would be making a return following his appearance in 2019’s Modern Warfare.

So far, this is all that can be gleaned from the leaked artwork, and so we will have to wait for official details to be released by Infinity Ward. Season 2 of MWII is expected to go live sometime in February following the conclusion of Season 1. It is currently unknown whether there will be any time in between Seasons, and so exact dates cannot yet be calculated.

That being said, with Season 2’s key artwork already complete, Infinity Ward could release the details for Season2 at any time – though considering the fact that Season 1 still has multiple months to go, we will most likely not hear anything official from the team regarding Season 2 until the first Season is nearing its end.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II launched on the 28th of October to massive success, with the game breaking multiple franchise and platform records. This is all despite the fact that the game’s first Season of content has yet to go live. With Season 1 set to arrive on the 16th of November, Activision has now detailed exactly what will be coming with it.

Taking to their blog, the Call of Duty staff detailed what fans can look forward to with Modern Warfare II’s first Season of content, revealing the full suite of maps, guns, operators and more which are set to arrive on the 16th of November.

Season 1 of Modern Warfare II will be bringing with it quite a lot of content, including some features that many expected to be available at launch. Season 1 includes 6 new operators; 4 new weapons; 2 new maps (Shoot House at launch and Shipment mid-Season); a new Special Ops mission; a Raid; and a revamped Battle Pass where “Instead of a linear stream of tiers set out in a scrolling row along the bottom of your screen, your Battle Pass takes the form of a multi-Sector map” – giving players not only more freedom in choosing what to unlock, but also makes it more engaging while doing so.

Season 1 will also be bringing with it a number of modes and features which many expected to be there at launch, including a Hardcore playlist (renamed to ‘Tier 1’); player combat records; and a Prestige system.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare has already had a great start, but with the upcoming release of Season 1, it feels as though the real Modern Warfare II is only just about to begin. It’s a good thing at least that Season 1 is only coming two weeks following the game’s launch.

Since its release on the 28th of October, Call of Duty Modern Warfare II has continued to break records all over the place, with us having previously reported that the first-person shooter not only managed to achieve the biggest launch in PlayStation Store history, but also in the history of the franchise itself too, managing to make over $1 Billion in just 10 days. Now, the team has revealed just how much bigger MWII is on PC when compared to previous entries.

As reported on by the Call of Duty-focused CharlieINTEL, Activision revealed that “[MWII] Sales have been robust across all platforms, including on PC, where unit sell-through to date is approximately twice the level of recent strong titles in the series.”

That is not all, however, as according to the publisher “Modern Warfare II has set new franchise engagement records for a premium Call of Duty release, with hours played in the first 10 days more than 40% above the prior franchise record.”

This is especially impressive when considering the fact that Modern Warfare II has yet to see its first Season go live, meaning player engagement is likely to only increase from here on out – once Season 1 arrives on the 16th of November.

Over the past few days, we have seen a number of sales figures released for Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, with the game breaking concurrent user records on Steam as well as being the fastest-selling Call of Duty on the PlayStation Store. Now, Activision themselves have revealed that Call of Duty Modern Warfare II has achieved the largest opening weekend in the franchise’s history.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Call of Duty account said “To our community – THANK YOU for making #ModernWarfare2 the #1 Call of Duty launch of all-time! And we're just getting started.”

As part of a press release published to Business Wire, it was revealed that the game had made over $800 million in revenue within the game’s first 3 days on the market following its 28th of October release.

Speaking on this success, the general manager for Call of Duty – Johanna Faries – said “Thank you, Call of Duty players, for making Modern Warfare II’s launch one for the record books as well as the highest grossing entertainment opening of the year. It is our honor and privilege to deliver such a historic launch weekend for the best fans in the world.”

As mentioned, Modern Warfare II managed to become the highest grossing entertainment launch of the year, surpassing the likes of Box Office giants such as Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With MWII planned to see support for two years, it will be interesting to see just how much more the game is set to grow.

After years of substandard Call of Duty releases, the latest Modern Warfare II was expected to hit it big thanks to the success of 2019’s Modern Warfare. Early figures seem to back this up, with Modern Warfare II having the biggest launch ever for a COD on the PlayStation store.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official PlayStation account said, “Congratulations to @InfinityWard and @Activision on the biggest PlayStation Store launch EVER for a Call of Duty game (including preorders and day one sales).”

This announcement comes in the wake of the statement by Xbox head Phil Spencer which claimed that Microsoft plans to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for as long as there is a PlayStation console to release the games on to.

While Spencer’s statement primarily responds to the fears by fans following the desired acquisition of Activision Blizzard, it also clearly makes financial sense for Call of Duty to remain on PlayStation. It will be interesting to see just how big Modern Warfare II becomes, especially with its two-year post-release content plan.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II (2022) represents the first COD title in years to be released on the Steam platform. As such, we are able to see much more transparent data on how the game is performing. After half a decade away, COD’s return to Steam is record-breaking.

Recently, we discussed how Call of Duty Modern Warfare II launched to over 100,000 concurrent Steam players. While this was indeed the case, these figures only accounted for the game’s early access release – in which only the campaign was available.

With the full game out and playable now, including the quintessential multiplayer mode, Call of Duty Modern Warfare II’s launch weekend has seen more than 250,000 concurrent players on the platform (260,667 as of writing) – far surpassing any other COD game on Steam.

For comparison’s sake, the highest concurrent player count on any other COD game on Steam is 2015’s Call of Duty Black Ops III, which managed 63,681 players during its peak. Admittedly, the landscape has changed quite a bit since then, with each year seeing more and more video game enthusiasts come to be, but even when compared to its contemporary competition (Battlefield 2042’s 105,397 concurrent players), Call of Duty Modern Warfare II comes out far on top.

While impressive already, the game is likely to only go from strength to strength, especially once Season 1 releases and Warzone 2.0 drops.

After years away from the platform. Call of Duty is finally back on Steam. Modern Warfare II represents the first COD game to land on the platform since 2017’s Call of Duty WW2. Though the game has yet to even come out fully (with only the campaign currently available), MWII is already a huge success with nearly 100,000 concurrent users on Steam.

As reported by Benji-Sales on Twitter, Call of Duty Modern Warfare II’s early access launch – which saw those who pre-ordered the game able to play the campaign a week early – represents a major success for the franchise’s return to Steam.

With 94,655 concurrent players, Call of Duty Modern Warfare II managed to achieve the 3rd highest concurrent player count in the history of Call of Duty on Steam, only behind Black Ops (2010) and the original Modern Warfare 2 (2009).

As mentioned, 2022’s MWII has yet to release in an official capacity, with only the campaign currently available for launch. Considering the fact that MWII managed a healthy 3rd place despite the game’s biggest draw – its multiplayer – not being available yet is impressive to say the least, and suggests that when the full game does release on the 28th of October it will be huge. We will have to wait and see.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II is now mere days away from release, and as such, the pre-load for the game has gone live. Unlike previous years, the game’s file size is rather modest. That being said, in order to play Warzone 2.0 you still need MWII installed.

Ahead of its release on the 28th of October, prospective Call of Duty Modern Warfare II players can now pre-download the first-person shooter. While there were fears that the game would follow in the footsteps of previous titles – with regards to their overly inflated file sizes – it seems as though Infinity Ward has managed to keep this year’s COD reasonable in that regard.

Players are able to install Modern Warfare II in chunks, meaning if you only want to play the campaign, or only want to engage in the multiplayer mode, you can do so without needing to install the rest. That being said, no matter what, you will need to install the base game – taking up 34.7GB.

The full breakdown for the game file sizes (on Xbox Series S) is as follows:

  • Base Game – 34.7 GB
  • Campaign – 17.0 GB
  • Co-op – 3.9GB
  • Multiplayer – 8.0 GB
  • Warzone 2 – 5.2 GB

Modern Warfare II seems to be a major improvement when compared to previous years in terms of file sizes, and being able to install each part piecemeal is also welcome. The only negative seems to be the fact that Warzone 2.0 is still tied to the Modern Warfare client. Still Infinity Ward seems to have solved the growing issue of increasing game file sizes – of which they were previously one of the worst offenders. Hopefully they continue to optimise it further.

As with the 2009 original, 2022’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will offer a 3rd-person gameplay option as part of the game’s multiplayer suite of modes. 3rd-person mode was available to try during the beta – though it took much more of a hybrid approach. Following fan feedback, Infinity Ward has confirmed a number of changes coming to the 3rd-person mechanics at launch.

Making the announcement on Instagram, the official Call of Duty account showed off some of the changes that the MW2 team have been working on since the conclusion of the beta at the end of September.

During the beta, MW2’s 3rd-person mode would indeed see you play multiplayer matches through a 3rd-person lens, however any time you would aim down sights, the perspective would shift back to 1st-person.

This will no longer be the case with the game’s full release, with Infinity Ward confirming a number of changes to the mode, including the fact that aiming down sights will no longer shift you to a 1st-person perspective – except when you are using a scope with a 4x magnification or greater.

This shift to a full 3rd-person perspective has necessitated further tweaking to the mechanics of the game, with a shoulder-swap option now being added. It is currently unknown whether more changes are planned for the full release, but with the change to the 3rd-person mode coming so late into development, hopefully weapon handling, recoil and more are all accounted for accordingly.

Each year, ahead of the game’s proper release, Activision hosts a beta period for that year’s Call of Duty, giving fans early insight into the maps, guns, mechanics and more coming with the upcoming FPS. The beta period for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has ended, with the publisher now revealing that it was the biggest in franchise history.

Making the announcement on their blog, the ‘Call of Duty Staff’ said “Call of Duty players made the Modern Warfare II Open Beta the biggest Beta in Call of Duty history — the most players, most hours played, and most matches played across PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and PC platforms combined. Thank you, Call of Duty community!”

Call of Duty Warzone Mobile has also seen some impressive early success, with the studio revealing that “The Call of Duty community has already made Warzone Mobile the fastest Activision, Blizzard and King mobile game to top 15 million pre-registrations on Google Play”. though perhaps not as impressive as the results seen for MW2, the excitement surrounding Warzone for mobile is notable.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II is the sequel to the 2019 reboot which for many helped to revitalise the series. With both Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard seeing mixed receptions, there is a lot riding on the shoulders of MW2. If the beta is anything to go by however, then this will be a good year for Call of Duty.

Just as previous leaked predicted, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta will begin in September, although the exact dates have shifted a little. Previously, the beta was thought to begin on the 15th of September for PlayStation pre-order customers, but Activision has now confirmed a September 16th start date.

In an announcement over the weekend, Activision announced that the PlayStation exclusive beta for pre-order customers will run from September 16th to the 17th. Then, PlayStation owners can participate in an open beta, which is free for everyone to download, from the 18th until the 20th.

After that, there will be a crossplay beta, opening things up to pre-order customers across Xbox, PC and PlayStation. Pre-order customers will get access to the beta on September 22nd to the 23rd, and then the open beta runs from September 24th to the 26th.

That will leave Infinity Ward with just one month to analyse feedback and implement any last-minute changes before Modern Warfare 2's October 28th launch date.

Aside from the beta, Activision has also announced plans to reveal more on Modern Warfare 2 starting on the 15th of September. This live stream will include reveals for MW2, as well as Warzone 2.0 and Call of Duty Mobile. We may also get confirmation of the upcoming ‘Tarkov inspired' game mode, which recently leaked.

The Call of Duty franchise is in an interesting position currently. Though still one of the biggest games of the year every year, the latest game – Call of Duty Vanguard – has seemingly failed to meet sales expectations, with Activision putting the blame on the game’s World War 2 setting.

The first person shooter genre has experienced many shifts over the course of the past 20 years. Going from WW2 shooters to modern military shooters to futuristic shooters and back to boots on the ground, Activision has tried to keep the franchise fresh.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working, with the publisher announcing in their annual report (as reported by VGC) that “While Call of Duty remains one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time, our 2021 premium release didn’t meet our expectations, we believe primarily due to our own execution.”

The ‘execution’ in question pertains to the fact that “The game’s World War II setting didn’t resonate with some of our community and we didn’t deliver as much innovation in the premium game as we would have liked.”

The release of COD’s free-to-play Warzone game in 2020 served as one of the best and worst things to happen to the franchise. With the Battle Royale game shooting to success shortly following its release, the premium Call of Duty titles were stuck in an awkward position due to their comparative value being seemingly not worth it. Call of Duty is in an interesting and transitory place in its life and it will be interesting to see what the future holds.

Last night, Activision took the time to officially confirm a few recent leaks. Firstly, it is now confirmed that Infinity Ward is developing Modern Warfare 2 as this year's Call of Duty – a sequel to the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot, not to be confused with the original Modern Warfare 2, or its more recent remaster.

Not only will we be getting Modern Warfare 2 this year, but we will also be getting a new Call of Duty: Warzone “experience”, which ties in with recent rumours that Warzone 2 is in the works, which will remove the bloat accumulated in current Warzone and target next-gen consoles, giving the developers a fresh start.

Infinity Ward is working on both Modern Warfare 2 and the new version of Warzone, mirroring the development cycle for 2019's Modern Warfare and the original version of Warzone. After launch, we would expect to see Warzone development handed off to a studio like Raven Software, which currently handles Warzone content updates and patches.

There are no release dates yet, but we would expect to see Modern Warfare 2 in November, followed by Warzone a month or so later in December.

In the wake of Microsoft's proposed $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the publisher has been making some interesting announcements. Not only have we received information on new games from Blizzard, but we're also getting some early confirmation on this year's Call of Duty, with Infinity Ward now confirmed to be handling the 2022 release.

Just as expected, Infinity Ward will be behind Call of Duty 2022, which will usher in “a new generation” for the series. While the studio did not confirm it is working on Modern Warfare 2, there have been enough leaks around the game pointing in that direction.

During Activision Blizzard's quarterly earnings call, the publisher said that it is currently working on “the most ambitious plan” in Call of Duty's history. As reported by VGC, sources with knowledge of the game's development have revealed much of what this plan includes.

Currently, It is expected that Modern Warfare 2 will launch later this year, alongside another full refresh and a new map for Warzone.

This week, Call of Duty: Warzone was finally patched to support Nvidia's DLSS technology. Modern Warfare had limited RTX support at launch with ray-traced shadows but lacked Nvidia's performance saving AI-driven technology, but that changes today.

Call of Duty Warzone, which uses the same engine as 2019's Modern Warfare, now supports DLSS, which can boost performance by as much as 70 percent at 4K resolution.

As we can see from the graph above, DLSS provides a significant boost in performance mode across a range of graphics cards. The RTX 3080 for instance goes from 90 frames per second at 4K with maximum graphical settings to 134 frames per second. The last generation RTX 2080Ti sees a boost from 72 frames per second to 116 frames per second.

There are also significant gains to be had on entry-level RTX graphics cards, with the RTX 3060 gaining almost double performance with DLSS on, moving from under 50 frames per second to over 80 frames per second.

Call of Duty: Warzone continues to be one of the most popular online games around and also supports other Nvidia technologies, including Nvidia Reflex for minimal input latency and real-time ray-tracing effects.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is back in the news this week and unfortunately for Activision, it isn't for good reasons. The publisher has found itself in the middle of a copyright infringement lawsuit, claiming that the game ripped off a pre-existing character.

Clayton Huagen, a videographer and photographer alleges that Modern Warfare character ‘Mara' is based on a character called ‘Cade Janus' from November Renaissance. Huagen created the character back in 2017 while working towards creating a feature film starring her.

During this time, Huagen hired someone to model the character and created a portfolio of photographs featuring her with various military gear. The lawsuit claims that Activision/Infinity Ward copied these photos without permission and used them in development documents for Black Ops 4. Then, when it came time for Modern Warfare, the photos were copied again to create ‘Mara', an in-game character.

The lawsuit (via All Games Delta) seeks to “recover all monetary remedies from Defendants' infringement”, including “all of their profits attributed to their infringements”. So far, Activision has not commented on the matter.

KitGuru Says: Judging by the comparison photos, the two characters do look similar. Whether or not it is enough to warrant a court-ordered payout remains to be seen.

When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was released last year, it was met with a great deal of enthusiasm due in part to its focus on modernising the game’s engine, while also offering free and consistent content updates. Though each year is met with a new entry, talk surrounding Modern Warfare has persisted, as the game has now officially become the best selling entry in the entire franchise.

As revealed by Call of Duty news reporter Charlie Intel, 2019’s Modern Warfare is said to be “the best selling title in Call of Duty history” though no exact figures were given. This serves to be good news for the franchise, which has been somewhat on the decline since its peak in 2012, when Black Ops II sold 31 million copies.

The success of Modern Warfare could be attributed to a number of factors, including the revised game engine, which made the game feel much newer when compared to other entries in the series. The game also offered cross-play between all consoles and PC, making for a stronger online player base, perhaps helping with the online experience. The game also removed the controversial loot box system, replacing it with a Battle Pass offering only cosmetic rewards.

Last but not least, Infinity Ward released a free-to-play Battle Royale mode part way through the game’s life, which proved to be a major success in its own right. Cross-promotion and advertising between the two products could have led to increased success for both games.

Regardless of what the reason is, there is no denying that Modern Warfare was a massive success. It’ll be interesting to see whether this year’s Black Ops Cold War manages to reach the same highs as Modern Warfare, or whether it has launched in the shadow of Infinity Ward’s entry.

During the month of October, many live service games get into the spirit of Halloween, offering limited time game modes with a spooky twist. Call of Duty: Warzone is now joining the fray, with its Haunting of Verdansk event beginning from today, and running until the 3rd of November, including special appearances from Billy the Puppet and Leatherface.

The synopsis for the Haunting of Verdansk is as follows: “As Halloween draws near, a squad of operators drops in for what seems to be a normal infiltration into Verdansk… though there’s been back-channel chatter about some unexplained and odd occurrences across the remote areas of the map. Operators have been briefed about reports concerning a serial killer who wears his victim’s faces on his own. There’s scattered intel about strange sounds emanating from various locations within the warzone; and not least the piercing, creepy laugher of a ventriloquist doll….”

During this limited time event, a new trick or treat system is being implemented, which will see supply boxes “contain frights or frighteningly good blueprints and personalization items”. Furthermore, the Verdansk map can now be played at night, and will include “more than a few Halloween-themed frights.”

Another game mode being added is Zombie Royale which has been described as an “undead twist on Battle Royale where dead Operators use unnatural powers to feast on the living in order to rejoin their ranks!”

The classic Modern Warfare multiplayer will also see a number of limited time modes. Lastly, players can get their hands on a leatherface and Billy the Puppet bundle, allowing players to fulfill their Halloween fantasies.

The Call of Duty Haunting of Verdansk event begins today, and runs until the 3rd of November.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is almost a year old and during that time, the game has ballooned in file size, eating up as much as 250GB of storage space on PC. Soon, we'll be able to shrink the game though, as uninstall options are being rolled out.

As part of today's Modern Warfare patch, uninstall options will be added to the game. So similarly to Halo: The Master Chief Collection, you'll be able to uninstall parts of the game. Presumably, this will include an install/uninstall option for the campaign, multiplayer, Warzone and Spec-Ops.

We don't know exactly how much space you will save uninstalling each portion of the game on its own, but hopefully it will be enough to be worth it. Most people likely don't need the campaign installed at this point anyway.

This will be coming as part of Patch 1.28, so keep an eye out for a Modern Warfare update on Battle.net today.

KitGuru Says: Presumably, this patch will have more than this, but being able to save on disc space is bound to be the highlight here for PC players. Have many of you considered or gone through with uninstalling Modern Warfare due to its file size? Will you be changing your mind now that this feature is coming?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has had its share of cheaters since launch, especially in the free to play Warzone mode. Fortunately, Infinity Ward is catching up to them, with 20,000 accounts banned for using paid cheat software ahead of the Season Six launch yesterday.

A well known cheat subscription service has a lot of unhappy customers this week, as their software is now listed as detected and many paid subscribers have found themselves banned, as confirmed by forum posts, via Vice.

This particular cheat maker has been around since 2014, creating hacks for a slew of Call of Duty games, Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront. These cheats often include ESP, aimbot, triggerbot and tools to make it more difficult to differentiate between legitimate shooting and bot-usage.

Activision has also begun taking legal action against cheat software creators. Following this latest ban wave, we may see more cheat services served with legal complaints.

KitGuru Says: These cheat makers usually find a workaround sooner rather than later. For now at least though, the beginning of Modern Warfare's sixth season should be well protected. Have many of you encountered issues with cheaters in Modern Warfare recently?

The latest Call of Duty Duty title, Modern Warfare, has become infamous for its bloated file size and massive patches. That being said, the latest patch is most likely the most egregious. The first-person shooter recently released a patch which fixes a graphical bug that has been plaguing the title. While PS4 and PC users only needed to download less than 2GB, Xbox One owners were forced to download 66.3GB worth of data.

As reported by EuroGamer, the reason for this wide disparity is due to “an unforeseen bug with the Microsoft patch delivery process,” meaning that “this download requires Xbox users to redownload files they already have, but it does NOT impact the overall install size. We're working closely with Microsoft to ensure future updates are smaller in size” explained Infinity Ward.

While it’s good that the overall file size is not drastically impacted by this update, the game already takes up over 200GB on PC, and downloading a further 66GB is certainly not an enjoyable experience.

The same update for PlayStation 4 only requires 1.2GB, while PC players must download a 0.88GB patch (Warzone only) or 1.83GB patch (Modern Warfare and Warzone).

With next-gen consoles around the corner, and game files sizes expected to increase alongside the improved graphical performance, it’ll be interesting to see just how much space each game will take on the console SSDs.
