Alongside this, Aspyr is already working on a second update, as well as server-side updates to continue to improve the multiplayer.

It is worth noting that there are still many negative reviews coming through on Steam, some of which have been posted or updated since the roll out of this first patch. With that in mind, it is probably worth waiting a while longer before picking up the game if you haven't already – although if you are a single-player person, then the campaigns do seem to be getting an uptick in positive feedback.

KitGuru Says: It seems like this game could have used with an extra few weeks, and perhaps a multiplayer beta test to really try and catch some of these issues early.

There was plenty of buzz when Aspyr announced plans to launch the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, bringing back the original two games with full online multiplayer. Unfortunately, the game's launch today has not gone as planned, swiftly garnering negative reviews due to major issues.

The Battlefront Classic Collection packages together remasters for the original Battlefront and Battlefront 2 games, promising a revival of the 64-player multiplayer servers and classic game modes, as well as some new map and character additions. The game also carries a £30 price tag.

At launch, roughly 10,000 PC players attempted to get into multiplayer matches, only to be met with a measly three available 64-player servers. Players also quickly ran into issues connecting to multiplayer sessions at all and when they could get in, bugs would soil the gameplay experience.

As a result of this, the game currently sits with a ‘mostly negative' overall review score on Steam, with many questioning how the game was allowed to release at all with its non-functional multiplayer. Aspyr has yet to comment on the backlash.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully Aspyr can quickly put out some fixes but the idea of only having three 64-player servers sounds insane to me. This is a Star Wars game, there was always going to be more than 200 players looking to play in large-scale matches.

Just yesterday, a gameplay trailer for Insomniac's cancelled multiplayer game, Spider-Man: The Great Web, appeared online. Many sources of this video have now been removed, but just 24 hours later, a second trailer for the game has leaked.

This trailer is more of a pitch trailer, with narration provided by Peter Parker voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal, before cutting to some gameplay clips, most of which are the ones we saw in the previous trailer. Currently, the trailer can be viewed via the tweet below, as spotted by Insider Gaming. It is likely that the video will eventually be taken down.

Many have pointed out that the game looks very polished and like it could have been ready for release. However, I think it is worth keeping in mind that Insomniac has many Spider-Man models cooked up already and a highly polished version of Spider-Man 2 to play around with for prototypes. It could have been an in-house trailer, based on very small examples of gameplay to showcase the idea behind the game – primarily aimed at impressing bosses to get the greenlight to really get the game done.

While these trailers for Spider-Man: The Great Web have leaked, very little else of it has been found in the Insomniac leaks, which leads me to believe that the game wasn't necessarily close to releasing soon.

Sony announced earlier this week that it would be laying off hundreds of staff members across the PlayStation business, including some team members at esteemed studios like Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games. With Guerrilla being hit, many were wondering if the long in-development Horizon multiplayer game had been cancelled, but it seems this is not the case.

Guerrilla Games has been experimenting with the idea of Horizon multiplayer since the franchise's inception. Code for multiplayer was found in both Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. However, these were small-scale experiments, rather than intended for release. Separately, Guerrilla Games has had another team working on a standalone Horizon multiplayer game, and more recently, a deal between Sony and NCSoft was forged, a partnership that is believed to involve a Horizon MMO.

Given that many other games have been cancelled in recent months due to layoffs, many wondered if Guerrilla Games' Horizon multiplayer game had suffered the same fate as Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Factions, but it seems that is not the case. Veteran games industry reporter, Jason Schreier, responded to questions about the project this week, stating that the multiplayer game has not been cancelled.

That doesn't mean plans won't change in the future, after all, Naughty Dog's standalone TLOU multiplayer game was in development for about four years before finally being scrapped. For now though, Horizon multiplayer is still in the works.

KitGuru Says: A Horizon multiplayer game could be good but I do worry that it is going to be a somewhat standard survival affair, albeit with an interesting world and lore. We've yet to see anything of the game officially though, so we'll have to hang tight for more details.

Since the release of The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog has been working away on an expanded multiplayer game to follow up on The Last of Us: Factions. Unfortunately, after several years of development, the studio has now decided to pull the plug.

In a statement published last night, Naughty Dog confirmed that it has decided to cancel ‘The Last of Us Online', the internal name used to describe the project. As Naughty Dog began “ramping up to full production” it realised just how much of an undertaking it truly was and that it would likely impact development of the studio's upcoming single-player games. Given that Naughty Dog is one of the best in the industry when it comes to story-driven games, it would have been a huge shame to see the company transition into a multiplayer-focused studio.

Naughty Dog specifically notes that if it continued with this project, it would have had to transform into “a solely live service games studio”. Like many Naughty Dog fans, those within the company did not want to go down this path. As a result, The Last of Us multiplayer project is no longer going to release.

It is unclear why Naughty Dog was attempting to build such a massive multiplayer project when many fans simply wanted a new version of the barebones multiplayer from the original The Last of Us game. Still, it looks like Naughty Dog will now refocus its efforts purely on single-player games once again.

KitGuru Says: A number of traditionally single-player studios have run into huge issues transitioning to live service multiplayer. Crystal Dynamics with Marvel's Avengers, Bioware with Anthem and PlatinumGames with Babylon's Fall are a few examples that immediately spring to mind. The jury is still out on Rocksteady with its Suicide Squad game, but there are plenty of other examples. Even Bungie struggled for years getting Destiny to a point that players were happy with, only for much of that effort to be squandered this year with the Lightfall expansion, which led to players dropping the game in large numbers.

Remedy recently updated investors on its roadmap of upcoming games, confirming that the Max Payne remakes are ready to enter production, while other titles like Control 2 are still in pre-production. The studio has now given a further update on Project Vanguard, its upcoming multiplayer game. While initially envisioned as a free-to-play title, it has since been rebooted into a ‘premium' game.

Remedy's upcoming multiplayer game, codenamed ‘Vanguard', will no longer launch as a free-to-play title. According to Remedy CEO, Tero Virtala, the game has evolved into a ‘premium' title, meaning it will have a price tag, rather than being free to download.

In an investors note, Virtala said: “We have made some great strides in free-to-play and multiplayer development in Vanguard. After a lot of careful consideration, we believe that taking on a new direction where the game will be built more around Remedy’s core competencies is the right way to go.”

Of course, being a premium multiplayer title does not mean that there won't be microtransactions, so we'll have to wait and see what the overall monetisation strategy is. With this change in direction, Vanguard will go back to the concept phase and will be given a new codename. The game is now being developed under the codename “Kestrel” and will be built on many of the features, assets and themes already designed for Vanguard.

KitGuru Says: It sounds like we're still quite a ways off from seeing Remedy's multiplayer game in action. With that said, the reboot will retain a lot of what was already built, so the concept phase may not last very long.

Modern Warfare 3 has officially launched. The game has already attracted some harsh reviews for its seemingly rushed campaign but many were still hopeful for the multiplayer. Unfortunately, there are early issues creeping up there, with Activision already removing several maps.

The Quarry, Rundown, Karachi and Scrapyard maps have all been temporarily removed from the game on the first full day of the game's release. The issue appears to stem from spawn locations not being implemented properly, leading to players spawning alongside enemies on these maps.

As Insider Gaming points out, the game did launch with 16 total 6v6 maps and three ground war maps, with more planned to come through monthly updates. There is no word on when these four maps will be reinstated in the game but the issue should be fixed up pretty quickly.

We've heard a lot about Sony's plans to make a big push into live-service games, seeking larger, recurring revenues than their single-player hits can provide. Originally, Sony had planned to ship around 12 live-service games by 2026 but that number has now been cut in half.

During Sony's latest earnings call, Sony President, Hiroki Totoki, explained that the company has opted to scale back its live-service plans a bit in order to ensure quality. As transcribed by VGC, Totoki said:

“We are reviewing this, we are trying as much as possible to ensure these games are enjoyed and liked by gamers for a long time. Of the 12 titles, six titles will be released by FY25 – that’s our current plan. The remaining six titles, we are still working on.”

Totoki added that this is the “total number of live service and multiplayer titles” planned in the mid to long term and it has no plans to drop the idea entirely. However, he notes that “game quality should be the most important thing”.

We already know about a few of Sony's live-service games, including a multiplayer Last of Us spin-off, a new game set in the Horizon universe and of course, Bungie is working away on games like Marathon and the next chapter of Destiny, although Bungie has reportedly ran into troubles of its own this year.

KitGuru Says: As long as Sony continues to still make great single-player games, and these multiplayer titles don't come at the expense of those experiences, then they should be able to transition into the multiplayer market smoothly without backlash. If the company took WB's approach and completely turned away from single-player to chase multiplayer-levels of monetisation, then there would certainly be uproar.

Earlier this year, we began hearing about two Far Cry projects. One of these is obviously Far Cry 7, the next single-player game in the franchise. However, there is also a multiplayer spin-off being developed and now, it appears that the team has settled on it being an extraction-based shooter.

Extraction-based shooters have become increasingly popular over the last few years but not quite to the same extent as the Battle Royale boom of the 2010s. Extraction shooters often have players dropping into an area, fighting both PvP and PvE enemies, collecting new gear for their stash and then extracting from the zone without getting killed. The most popular example here is Escape from Tarkov, but games like Call of Duty have also begun dabbling in extraction modes and popular streamer, Dr. Disrespect, started a whole game studio to work on his own extraction shooter.

According to Insider Gaming's sources, the Far Cry multiplayer project, known internally as Project Maverick, will be an extraction-based shooter. The game will take place in a fictional version of Alaska and players will be tasked with collecting resources to craft tools for survival, including guns, medical supplies and armour.

Currently, perma-death is in place, so if your character dies, you'll lose all your collected equipment and start over. There is no release date in place yet, but apparently Ubisoft is aiming for playtesting in 2024, followed by a full release in 2025.

KitGuru Says: I remember thinking Rainbow Six Siege wouldn't take off but Ubisoft proved me wrong there so perhaps the same thing will happen with Far Cry. That said, this is just one of a bunch of multiplayer projects Ubisoft has in the works and plans can change. XDefiant was originally revealed as a Tom Clancy shooter but the branding was later dropped in favour of launching as a new IP, so Ubisoft is not against the idea of pivoting.

Since then, the title has seemingly struggled to find an identity – with it reportedly now being put on ice.

Yesterday we reported that Naughty Dog followed many other studios in laying off a portion of its staff – in this instance cutting a couple dozen contractors. According to Kotaku, the bad news continues, as the studio’s long-in-development multiplayer title has reportedly been halted, saying “while not completely canceled, is basically on ice at this point.”

This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard about the studio’s multiplayer struggles, with Bloomberg claiming back in June that resources were being moved away from this title following reviews by Sony and live-service giant ‘Bungie’. It seems as though the situation has unfortunately not improved in the months since.

As mentioned, The Last of Us’ Factions mode was a genuinely fun and engaging time, and Naughty Dog seemed to be giving this standalone multiplayer title their all. Had the game managed to deliver a successful live-service system while featuring TLOU Part II’s excellent gameplay, then the team could have had a massive hit on their hands. Unfortunately, it seems as though the title may never get the chance to prove itself.

In recent years, Sony has been ramping up its development of ‘live service' games, in hopes of generating more recurring revenue through multiplayer hits, rather than consistently relying on single-player blockbusters. Sony reportedly has as many as ten live service games in development right now, but sources now claim that Sony is “uncomfortable” with this new direction.

Sony Interactive Entertainment President, Jim Ryan, is leaving the company in early 2024. During his time as head of SIE, Ryan spearheaded the launch of the PS5 console, the first wave of exclusive games and behind the scenes, he also worked on diversifying PlayStation revenue by bringing select games over to PC and by greenlighting the development of numerous live service projects.

According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, people at Sony are “uncomfortable” with the switch to live service game development. The model has proven to have risks in the past and plenty of other major publishers have failed to break into that market.

Sony acquired Bungie to assist in future development of live service games, which has led to delays in projects like The Last of Us Factions.

KitGuru Says: Ten live service projects is a bit much but I'd like to see Sony try its hand at a few, just as long as it doesn't come at the sacrifice of the single-player games PlayStation fans have come to expect.

During the most recent Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase, we got our first proper look at the campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Ahead of the game’s release on the 10th of November, the team have now confirmed that we will finally get to see what multiplayer looks like – alongside an update to the future of Warzone – on the 5th of October.

Making the announcement on their blog, the ‘Call of Duty Staff’ detailed when we would next be getting new info on the upcoming first-person shooter, saying “With the help of Call of Duty developers and community representatives, Call of Duty: Next is the premier showcase for Modern Warfare III Multiplayer, a look forward to what’s coming to Call of Duty: Warzone, as well as a livestream where updates from Call of Duty’s mobile experiences will be shared.”

They continued, “More intel on Call of Duty: Next will be shared in the coming weeks. However, be sure to save the date – October 5, 2023 – for this epic event.”

While many people do buy Call of Duty for its campaign, the multiplayer experience has always served as the franchise’s bread and butter, and so it will be interesting to see what gameplay changes have been made since 2022’s Modern Warfare 2.

While Grounded is a great survival game, many fans of Obsidian Entertainment became fans through single-player RPGs. At one point, Avowed was going to be more multiplayer-focused as part of an internal effort to entice publishers into helping with the project.

Prior to being acquired by Microsoft, Obsidian had spent decades as an independent studio and constantly had to hustle to keep things going. In a particularly bad period between projects, Obsidian turned to Kickstarter to fund Pillars of Eternity, a decision that ended up saving the studio from going under. Avowed is a new first-person RPG, set in the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity games.

In a portion of the Obsidian 20th Anniversary Documentary, co-founder Feargus Urquhart confirmed that at one point, he “really pushed” for Avowed to contain multiplayer, as it would enable him to sell it as a ‘more interesting game' to publishers in hopes of securing funding and partnerships to see the game through to release.

Looking back on this, Urquhart says that he now believes this was “the wrong decision” and ultimately, Obsidian did drop its multiplayer hopes, in part due to difficulties restructuring the team's usual workflow to accommodate for multiplayer and co-op gameplay. Now, Avowed is set to be the type of RPG most fans follow the studio for.

Avowed does not have a release date yet but it is expected to launch sometime in 2024 for PC and Xbox Series X/S consoles.

KitGuru Says: Most RPGs struggle to incorporate co-op in a way that makes sense to me or is completely user-friendly. There are usually some caveats and the gameplay experience is typically very different from a polished single-player game. Obsidian has Microsoft's backing now, so it will have the ability to try out new ideas in the future but in the meantime, sticking to single-player for Avowed will be considered the right choice by many fans.

We've known for a while now that Insomniac was at one point considering the possibility of adding co-op to its Spider-Man game. With Spider-Man 2 set to be more of a team-up effort between Peter Parker and Miles Morales, the idea of co-op gameplay has come up again, but Insomniac has now confirmed it is firmly committed to single-player for the time being.

Comments from voice actor, Nadji Jeter, who voices Miles Morales in the game, seemed to indicate that co-op might make its way into Spider-Man 2. Before that, datamining efforts found references to co-op and multiplayer within the game files for the first game. Due to this evidence, fans did begin asking Insomniac about this on Twitter and sure enough, the studio has replied to set the record straight.

Insomniac says that there won't be co-op multiplayer in Spider-Man 2, instead it will be “an epic single-player adventure” just like the original game. For some, this will be cause for celebration, as co-op and multiplayer features can often water down what otherwise could have been a great single-player game.

Sony will be going live with the PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday at 9PM BST. During the stream, we expect to see new gameplay for Spider-Man 2, alongside confirmation of a September release date.

While The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is traditionally a single-player game, fans have often wished for some form of co-op or multiplayer. The Skyrim Together mod was the most successful attempt at delivering on this, but it would seem that Bethesda might be looking to implement multiplayer elements in a more official capacity with The Elder Scrolls VI.

The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced alongside Starfield all the way back in 2018. Starfield is only just coming out this year, meaning the next Elder Scrolls game is likely at least another five years away. Bethesda is currently hiring for its Elder Scrolls 6 development team and the wording of one job listing suggests Bethesda is exploring adding multiplayer.

The job listing (via Tech4Gamers) is for an Associate Level Designer at Bethesda's Montreal studio. The listing does not specifically mention The Elder Scrolls 6. However, it does call for someone with experience using the Elder Scrolls Construction Set, the tools Bethesda uses to create content for its games. The position also calls for someone familiar with open-world multiplayer games.

The Elder Scrolls IP has dipped into multiplayer territory before with The Elder Scrolls Online. However, if this job listing was for ESO, it would be based at a Zenimax Online studio and since the game is already available, it would also likely be labelled as a job listing for ESO, rather than having the position shrouded in secrecy.

With all of that taken into consideration, it does seem that Bethesda is exploring adding multiplayer to The Elder Scrolls 6 in some form. Whether or not such a feature comes to fruition still remains to be seen. Bethesda also explored multiplayer ideas for Fallout 4, but that ended up being spun off into its own project, ultimately resulting in Fallout 76.

KitGuru Says: I think more RPGs should consider adding co-op gameplay, but have it handled in a similar way to Larian's cRPGs, allowing for each player to vote on important decisions as you progress through the story.

While the demo was only announced for PlayStation, and the game's upcoming VR mode will likely only be for PSVR2, it is believed that the free Mercenaries mode will be available across all platforms.

Resident Evil 4 Remake will release on the 24th of March for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5.

We've known for some time now that Guerilla Games originally envisioned its Horizon series as having a multiplayer component. Plans for this were scrapped early on in development of Horizon Zero Dawn, but recently, early footage of multiplayer gameplay has leaked online.

It would seem that after scrapping multiplayer plans with Zero Dawn, Guerilla Games had a small team also working on multiplayer tech during development of Horizon Forbidden West. As shown on Reddit in a now-deleted video, roughly ten minutes of multiplayer gameplay were shown, revealing co-op elements as players group up together to fight the machines.

As we know from the final game, multiplayer did not end up making its way into Horizon Forbidden West and it is unlikely to be a factor in upcoming VR title, Horizon: Call of the Mountain. However, Guerilla Games job listings suggest that the company is now working on a dedicated multiplayer spin-off game set in the Horizon world.

It has also previously been claimed that Sony is teaming up with NCSoft to deliver an MMORPG based on Horizon.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Judging from concept art and what we've seen so far, Horizon multiplayer would have been a Monster Hunter style co-op mode, with players grouping up to take on the robots. This idea could spin off into its own game, but it likely has little to do with the NCSoft rumours, which would likely result in a more traditional MMO.

One of the most consistent Ubisoft franchises is that of Far Cry, with the open world FPS series being generally liked across the board. It is therefore unsurprising to see that Far Cry 7 is reportedly in development. Interestingly, so too is a standalone multiplayer title.

As reported by Insider Gaming, Ubisoft currently has two Far Cry projects in the works – a single player experience codenamed Project Blackbird as well as a standalone multiplayer title dubbed Project Maverick. Interestingly, these two titles were once one, before being split up into separate experiences at some point during development.

A few details were shared in particular with regards to the multiplayer Project Maverick, with Insider Gaming claiming that the title has seen a great deal of evolution and change over the course of its development – though as it currently stands, the game is seemingly an extraction-based shooter set in the Alaskan Wilderness and will include genre staples such as permadeath; a backpack system; contracts; lootable chests; extraction zones and more.

Internally, these two titles are planned for release in ‘Fall 2025’ though with how far away that still is, anything can change between now and then.

The Far Cry series has in recent years focused on offering drop-in drop-out co-op within the single-player titles for a rather casual but fun multiplayer experience. It seems as though Ubisoft is opting to move away from such a tactic, and so it will be interesting to see just how different Far Cry 7 and the multiplayer games are from each other – as well as previous entries.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this latest leak? Did you enjoy Far Cry’s multiplayer? What do you want to see from a single-player only Far Cry game? Let us know down below.

It has long been rumoured that Guerilla Games is working on a multiplayer game set in the Horizon universe. Thanks to a number of new job listings, this fact has officially been confirmed, with multiple positions explicitly stating that the team is working on a co-op multiplayer Horizon title.

Making the announcement on their ‘LifeAtGuerilla’ careers Twitter page, the studio said “Join Guerrilla in Amsterdam as we work to expand the world of Horizon.”

With that, the studio explicitly stated for the first time that they are working on a multiplayer Horizon title, saying “We are continuing to create epic solo adventures for Aloy. But there is more. A new internal team is developing a separate Online Project set in Horizon's universe. Featuring a new cast of characters and a unique stylized look, friends will be able to explore the majestic wilds of Horizon together.”

With how many major positions are open for application, it is safe to assume that this title is still many years away. Fans of the franchise will not be left wanting however, as 2023 will see the release of the Forbidden West expansion ‘Horizon Burning Shores’ and those getting a PSVR 2 will be able to explore Horizon Call of the Mountain.

Furthermore, this multiplayer project is said to be separate from the Horizon MMORPG which is also in development – meaning there is a lot more Horizon coming our way in the near and far future.

After a successful beta, Infinity Ward has been working on further improving the now available multiplayer mode for Call of Duty Modern Warfare II. The developer has considered the community's feedback, leading to changes in various game systems, including UI, matchmaking, sound, and gameplay.

The patch brings many improvements over September's multiplayer beta. The highlights should be the tweaks to footsteps, the new aiming system for third-person multiplayer modes, and enhanced enemy visibility. Other changes include balance tweaks, UI and matchmaking updates, and less exploitable movement.

The full changelog can be found below:

Enemy Visibility

  • We have added diamond icons above the heads of enemies. This should make it easier for players to clearly identify opponents in the game.
  • Additionally, we've continued to tweak lighting and contrast for improved enemy visibility.

Audio

  • We've shortened the overall range of footstep audio which will allow enemy players to get closer to targets before they are able to detect footsteps. We have also continued to tweak teammate footstep audio, which will now be quieter following feedback from the Beta.
  • The in-world activation sound effect volume range for the Dead Silence field upgrade has been drastically decreased.

Third Person

  • Following feedback from Beta, aiming down sights will now stay in third person POV for low-zoom optics. Only high-zoom optics (beginning with the ACOG and higher) and special optics such as Hybrids and Thermals will revert to first person POV. We believe this will enhance the third person experience while keeping the gameplay balanced. The feedback on this mode has been very positive, and we will continue to explore its use as a modifier.

Weapons

  • We have continued to tweak weapons across the game following both feedback from Beta players and game data. Players can expect more specifics on weapon tuning as we continue to support post-launch.

UI

  • We have been working hard on numerous updates to our UI that make accessing and customizing your loadout more seamless. We've made improvements to navigation of menus and will continue to optimize our UX.

Movement

  • Slide, ledge hang, and dive have been further refined. We've also addressed some movement exploits following Beta.

Matchmaking

  • We have implemented some changes that aim to reduce lobby disbandment between matches. We look forward to testing this at a large scale and getting feedback.

For those who own the game on the PC but didn't download the patch yet, it might be worth knowing that it's 55GB in size. So, if your Internet is not crazy fast, you'll want to start downloading that update.

Back in January, Bandai Namco and From Software were forced to take the multiplayer servers for the Dark Souls series offline for the PC platform due to a major security bug. Last month, we learned that the team was close to bringing multiplayer back online, but things went quiet again. Now, PvP is finally back up for Dark Souls 3, with Dark Souls and Dark Souls II set to follow later.

In Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3, players can enable online functionality to invade other player's games and also be invaded. Unfortunately, a flaw with this system could grant Remote Code Execution privileges, enabling a hacker to worm their way into the PCs of unsuspecting players.

Since the bug was discovered right before the release of Elden Ring, From Software decided to take Dark Souls offline on PC for a while so it could finish up with Elden Ring and then properly work out a fix for the Dark Souls issue. Back in May, a studio spokesperson told PCGamer that the update would be coming soon. and in July, SteamDB showed that the developers were working on a Dark Souls 3 update.

Now over half a year later, From Software has officially announced that Dark Souls 3 now has its multiplayer back online. The studio also confirms that it is still working to restore online functionality to all other Dark Souls titles too.

Considering the severity of the bug, it seems that the development team had to go through quite a bit of effort to properly secure Dark Souls multiplayer. Hopefully the update can roll out to the other titles in fairly quick succession, but they likely want to see if any issues pop up with the new Dark Souls 3 update first.

KitGuru Says: Invasions are a big part of the Dark Souls experience and for some players, it is the best feature of the game. It has been a long time coming, but the fix has finally arrived for Dark Souls 3, and the remaining games shouldn't be too far behind.

Now that Spider-Man has officially broken free of PlayStation exclusivity and ended up on PC, dataminers have swiftly gone to work trying to figure out all of the game's secrets. As it turns out, at one point, Insomniac was considering a multiplayer co-op component for the game.

In the game files, dataminer ‘DniweTamp' found several strings pointing to co-op gameplay and file references to multiplayer. It would seem that at one point Insomniac was considering two playable characters in co-op mode, likely a combination of Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

Ultimately, Insomniac chose to not go ahead with this feature for the first game, or in the smaller standalone expansion, Miles Morales, which sees Peter Parker leaving NYC for a bit and leaving hero duties Miles.

Interestingly, Insomniac is currently working on Spider-Man 2 and the cinematic reveal trailer does hint at a closer partnership between Parker and Morales, with both of them fighting together. It is possible that co-op will make its way into the sequel, or perhaps Insomniac will stick to its current formula of having multiple playable characters at different points in the story.

Somewhere during one of several reboots for Skull and Bones, the game transitioned into a multiplayer-first title. Now, the game's director, Ryan Barnard, has given us more insight into what that means, noting that while the game has an ‘underlying story', narrative is not a focus of the game.

Speaking in an interview with True Achievements last week, Barnard said confirmed that “Skull and Bones is not a narrative-driven game”. Instead, there will be multiple NPC characters in the world that give you missions and there will be some story tied to that, but what really drives progression in the game is “Infamy”. Increasing your Infamy level will unlock new ships, weapons, armour and more to help you gear up for harder content.

Here is the full quote: “Skull and Bones is not a narrative-driven game, we have narrative pieces in the game, you'll meet important NPCs called Kingpins which have their own stories that you'll learn as you develop rapport with them by taking on contracts with them. There is an underlying story to the game with which we build the entire world lore, but that's not the main focus.”

Bernard adds that the team wants players to ‘create their own stories', a line often mentioned in the marketing for long-running multiplayer and live-service style games.

The full interview reveals more about gameplay, combat and exploration so it is worth reading if you are looking forward to Skull and Bones. The game will release on the 8th of November for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Stadia and Luna.

Back in January, Bandai Namco and From Software were forced to take the multiplayer servers for the Dark Souls series offline for the PC platform due to a major security bug. Several months later in May, From Software gave us a small update, stating multiplayer would come back online ‘soon'. Now two months later, the update appears to be imminent.

Now, as spotted by FromSoft-focused streamer, modder and dataminer, Lance McDonald, Dark Souls 3 has recently had several updates on the backend of Steam, showing that the developers are gearing up to roll out a new patch.

This update should restore online multiplayer to the Dark Souls games on PC. There may end up being a staggered schedule, with Dark Souls 3 coming back online first, followed by Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls Remastered. Hopefully this is something that Bandai Namco or From Software can confirm soon.

KitGuru Says: Invasions are a big part of the Dark Souls experience and for some players, it is the best feature of the game. Hopefully next month, the PC versions can finally be restored to normal.

Turtle Rock's last major game, Evolve, didn't really ever find success. While there was a lot of pre-release hype for the game, overly aggressive monetisation at launch put a lot of players off. Online functionality for the game eventually came to an end, but in a surprise move, Evolve seems to be coming back this year.

Evolve: Stage 2 had its multiplayer shutdown back in 2018 and several months ago, online functionality in Evolve Legacy, the original version of the game, also went offline. A discord channel dedicated to grouping up players got involved, with fans sending requests to 2K to reinstate Evolve's multiplayer, and 2K decided to get it done, as reported by NME.

Four years after initially closing down, Evolve: Stage 2 now has peer-to-peer and matchmaking online functionality once again. Additionally, players have found that Hunt mode now rewards rare skins once again, something that has been missing from the game since multiplayer originally shut down.

Of course, there still aren't that many Evolve players. Steam Charts shows that the game averages less than 100 peak concurrent players  per month, although this recent news has driven player numbers back up to nearly 300 concurrent players. If you do feel like revisiting Evolve at any point and need help getting a group together, the Evolve Reunited Discord is a good place to start.

KitGuru Says: I was very excited for Evolve before its initial launch and I still think the idea and gameplay had plenty of promise. Now that the game has been stripped down to just the core experience with less of a focus on monetisation, it might be worth revisiting.

Modders have been working on enabling co-op multiplayer for Skyrim for years in various forms, like Skyrim Together and Tamriel Online. Later this week, the most promising Skyrim multiplayer mod to date will launch – Skyrim Together Reborn.

Skyrim Together Reborn is a version 1.0 update to Skyrim Together, marking the mod's official release. As the name implies, the mod will enable multiplayer in Skyrim, allowing up to 5 players to explore and do quests together. The mod will even handle quest syncing so everyone progresses together.

Originally, Skyrim Together Reborn was supposed to have a beta before the final release, but after some last minute improvements, the dev team decided it could polish things up and jump straight to version 1.0.

As with any ambitious mod, there will be quirks and not everything will work perfectly at all times. With that in mind, if you're planning on downloading this, don't expect an ultra-polished multiplayer experience. There will likely be some issues, like networking errors or crashes while playing. The developers will fix lingering issues post-launch, but as with most mods, the team primarily consists of volunteers doing this as a labour of love in their spare time, so patience will be required.

Skyrim Together Reborn will be available on Nexus Mods as of the 8th of July at 4PM GMT.

KitGuru Says: It has been a while since I last tried Skyrim Together, so it is great to see that the mod is coming out and has been seen through to completion. Will you be looking to install this for some co-op Skyrim over the weekend?

Last month, 343 confirmed that it is finally ready to publicly test Halo Infinite's long-awaited campaign co-op feature. Today, the studio announced that the co-op beta will be arriving on the 11th of July.

This is in line with the roadmap 343 published around the launch of Season 2. Aside from online campaign co-op, 343 is also working on local co-op and split-screen, which will be arriving later in a separate update. Right now, the team is targeting the 11th of July to begin publicly testing Infinite's online campaign co-op, so assuming there are no last minute delays, Halo Insider members will be able to test the feature in less than two weeks.

To get into the beta, you will need to have registered for the Halo Insider program by the 5th of July. The beta will also require players to download a separate build of the game, as has been the case with previous Halo flights.

Assuming all goes well with the test, the feature should roll out to all Halo Infinite players fairly soon. Then in August, we should get updates on local co-op and split-screen. We should also hopefully hear more about Infinite's Forge mode too, as recent leaks suggest the mode is nearly ready.

KitGuru Says: Halo Infinite needed a lot more work post-launch than anticipated. Progress has been slow, but hopefully by the end of this year, all the necessary features for a truly great Halo game will be in place.

Last month, Supermassive Games announced a sudden change of plan for The Quarry – the game would no longer release with online co-op and the feature had been delayed to July. At the time, we wondered about the circumstances around this delay and now, Supermassive has explained what happened.

While previously Supermassive only stated that the delay would ensure “the best experience possible”, as every studio does when delaying a game, the company has now expanded on the situation further. As it turns out, Supermassive Games has part of its team based in Ukraine, and the country has been fending off a Russian invasion for months.

The company delayed the multiplayer portion of The Quarry to help move its remaining team members out of Ukraine, and new multiplayer servers had to be set up in Poland due to repeated attacks from Russia. This was all revealed by the game's creative director, Will Byles, in a recent interview with IGN.

Even with the added pressures of moving employees out of a warzone and getting them set up in a safe environment, The Quarry's multiplayer feature is set to go live on the 8th of July and is in the final stages of testing.

Back in January, Bandai Namco and From Software were forced to take the multiplayer servers for the Dark Souls series offline for the PC platform. The lack of online functionality is a temporary measure, as a bug that could grant an attacker Remote Code Execution (RCE) privileges was discovered. It has taken longer than expected to fix the issue, but online functionality will finally be returning soon.

In Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3, players can enable online functionality to invade other player's games and also be invaded. Unfortunately, a flaw with this system can grant Remote Code Execution privileges, enabling a hacker to worm their way into your PC by exploiting the game's code. With RCE, the attacker could obtain full control of a system without the owner's knowledge, making this a very serious issue.

The bug was discovered right before the release of Elden Ring, which was From Software's primary development focus at the time. With that in mind, we anticipated that Dark Souls would be fixed sometime in March, but several months have gone by without an update/ Fortunately, that changed this week, with From Software saying it is now in the process of bringing PC servers back online.

In a statement to PCGamer, a studio spokesperson said: “We are currently in the process of restoring the online servers for the Dark Souls series on PC. We plan to restore online service for each game progressively, bringing back servers for Dark Souls 3 once we complete the necessary work to correct the problem. We will provide additional updates as soon as the restoration schedule is finalised. We want to thank all our players for your patience and understanding as we work to fix this issue.”
