Each month, Nintendo updates its Switch Online service with a couple new games, giving subscribers the opportunity to play some of the console manufacturer’s most known and loved video games from its past. With November soon to be upon us, Nintendo has now announced next month’s ‘free’ N64 titles.

Making the announcement, the console manufacturer said “Party like it’s the year 1999 (and 2000)! Hit some Dice Blocks and become a Super Star in Mario Party and Mario Party 2, originally released for the Nintendo 64 system, coming to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members on 11/2 [2nd of November].”

The Mario Party series has had its ups and downs – including on the Nintendo Switch itself – and so it is exciting to see two of the most core and quintessential Mario Party games come to the system. What’s more, thanks to it being part of Nintendo’s Switch Online service, subscribers will be able to play online with friends for the first time.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack may not be the best value in gaming, but with each month, the service is certainly becoming more and more worth it.

One of the most surprising announcements at Nintendo’s recently held Direct was the reveal that the long-elusive GoldenEye 007 would be leaving its Nintendo 64 shackles and would be coming to the Switch. Even more surprising however is the fact that the game is set to also come to Microsodt’s Xbox consoles – though with some upsides and downsides.

Making the announcement on the Xbox Blog, Craig Duncan, the Studio Head at Rare said “Since its original release in 1997, GoldenEye 007 has remained a beloved classic in the hearts and minds of millions of fans worldwide. Today, we’re excited to announce that a new generation of players will soon get to experience the genre-defining stealth shooter gameplay for themselves, faithfully recreated to preserve the action and excitement of the original while adding new features for the modern age of gaming.”

The game will retain all of the original title’s features, including the campaign, local split-screen multiplayer, and even all of the cheats available within the original N64 game. That being said, it will also be ‘Enhanced’ with some modern conveniences such as dual analogue stick support; native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD; a stable frame rate and game achievements.

Though it does come with many enhancements, it is unfortunate to see the game not seeing online multiplayer support as is possible with the Switch re-release of GoldenEye 007.

There is no release date for GoldenEye, but when it does, it will be available across the Xbox One family as well as the Series X|S devices – both through Game Pass and as a free update to Rare Replay owners.

Nintendo has slowly but surely been filling out its Nintendo Switch Online subscription service with titles from its N64 library. In a surprise announcement, it was revealed that one of the most prolific yet elusive Nintendo 64 titles – GoldenEye 007 – is coming to NSO.

Nintendo recently held its latest Nintendo Direct where the console manufacturer announced (among many other things) that GoldenEye 007 would be joining its Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass service. This is especially notable due to the fact that the iconic game is based on the James Bond 007 IP, meaning the title is tied up in all kinds of different licensing agreements. This is doubly confused by the fact that the game’s development studio, Rare, is now owned by Microsoft/Xbox.

Fans of this 1997 FPS game will no doubt therefore be excited by the announcement that GoldenEye 007 is finally coming to Switch via NSO, meaning that the multiplayer title will also offer online play – an impossibility back in 1997 on the N64.

GoldenEye 007 wasn’t the only NSO game revealed, with 9 different titles announced to be coming across 2022 and 2023, namely:

  1. Mario Party – 2022
  2. Pilotwings 64 – 2022
  3. Mario Party 2 – 2022
  4. Pokemon Stadium – 2023
  5. Pokemon Stadium 2 – 2023
  6. Mario Party 3 – 2023
  7. Harvest Moon 64 – Japan Only
  8. Excitebike 64 – 2023
  9. 1080 – 2023

Each month, Nintendo adds one additional game to its library of Nintendo 64 titles as part of the company’s Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription service. Following on from last month’s game ‘Pokemon Snap’ NSO members are set to receive another N64 Pokemon game this month.

Coming to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack on the 15th of July, Pokemon Puzzle League offers “a new kind of Pokémon battle where the power and speed of your brain are just as important as the strength of your Pokémon! Join Ash, Brock, Misty, and many more characters from the Pokémon animated series as they gather in Puzzle Village to compete for the title of Pokémon Puzzle Master.”

Response to Pokémon Puzzle Master upon its initial release was surprisingly positive, especially considering the game’s genre. Since then, the game has remained within the minds of fans, and so initial reactions to the announcement that Pokémon Puzzle Master would be July’s new N64 game has been welcome indeed.

Of course, whether this justifies the added cost of the Expansion Pack is up to you, but slowly yet surely, Nintendo is fleshing out its N64 library on Switch.

For many, Pokémon Snap (1999) holds a special place in their heart, with the Nintendo 64 game offering Pokémon fans their first proper look at these pocket monsters in a 3D environment. As they have been doing since its launch, the Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack service is seeing one new additional game added per month – with June’s being the aforementioned Pokémon Snap.

Making the announcement, Nintendo said “Catching Pokémon is a snap! Travel to Pokémon Island and meet Professor Oak to begin a safari to take the best possible photographs of over 60 different Pokémon. The Pokémon Snap game, originally released for the Nintendo 64 system, will be available on 6/24 for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.”

Pokémon Snap may not be the longest game out there, with an average playtime clocking in at just 6 hours for a completionist run, but it is one of the more beloved Nintendo 64 games – especially if you grew up as a Pokémon fan during the era of Snap’s release.

Though it is undoubtedly frustrating to see only one N64 game added per month to the service, NSO’s games are permanent additions, meaning that hopefully given enough time the majority of the system’s library will be brought over to the Switch. Our coverage of May’s NSO game of the month (Kirby 64) can be found HERE.

Since its launch in October 2021, Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack has seen a new game added to the Nintendo 64 library roughly once per month. March’s game has now been announced.

From the 11th of March, those who are subscribed to NSO’s Expansion Pack can gain access to F-Zero X; the N64 release of the iconic racing franchise. F-Zero X specifically lets you “Choose from 30 different hover-car racers, including updated versions of the Blue Falcon and other vehicles from the original F-Zero game.”

With 29 other racers on the track, maintaining speed without crashing is tough – even more so thanks to the variety of game modes, which consists of “[trying] to win a Grand Prix Cup, get the fastest lap time in a Time Trial, or destroy the competition in a Death Race.”

Thanks to the online aspect of the game, you can also engage in full online multiplayer – theoretically allowing you to play in full 30-player lobbies (though Nintendo limits online to 4 real players). F-Zero’s absence in modern times has been felt by many fans of the franchise. Hopefully this newest addition is just the first step before a brand new F-Zero game. One can hope.

Finally, it is interesting to see relatively few SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis games being added. Aside from the 15 launch titles and a small drop of 3 games in December, there has been no news regarding additional games – though it is promised to come eventually. If the service is to justify its cost, then the SEGA side needs to up its value.

The Nintendo Switch Online service has seen some controversy since it launched. Offering a select number of older titles, NSO is the only legal way to play some of Nintendo’s most iconic games. Unfortunately, the quality of emulation has been lacking – though this has improved with a new update.

Nintendo recently released its version 2.0 update to the Switch’s online service, bringing with it a number of improvements to Nintendo 64 emulation on the handheld hardware. Previously, the service suffered from many issues including but not limited to inaccurate fog rendering, input lag and more.

Though not as big an update as the version number would suggest, as reported by Modern Vintage Gamer, The Nintendo Switch Online service’s 2.0 update brings with it:

  • Fixed fog effects across the board in both The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart 64 (including Kokiri Forest/Skulltula House/Choco Mountain/water temple room, etc)
  • Fixes to the crashes/save bug in Paper Mario
  • Input lag improvements (though still not as lag-free as native hardware)

While this may not seem like an update worthy of the version number 2.0, the improvements, fixes and changes introduced were much-needed, and takes the Switch’s NSO service from being unrecommendable to certainly usable. Hopefully the next update adds cosmetic improvements.

Despite the many disappointing aspects to Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pak, one positive is the service’s consistency when it comes to adding new Nintendo 64 titles. With that, February’s addition has now been announced.

Making the announcement, Nintendo said “Save Termina before it’s met with a terrible fate! The Legend of #Zelda: Majora's Mask comes to #NintendoSwitch for #NintendoSwitchOnline + Expansion Pack members in February!”

Majora’s Mask will mark the 12th Nintendo 64 game to come to the service, with the most recent being the Rare-developed classic Banjo-Kazooie, which arrived just yesterday, on the 20th of January.

Majora’s Mask is one of the series’ most unique and ‘out-there' titles, in which “Upon landing in the mystical world of Termina, Link must embark on an urgent quest to solve the mystery of the moon, save the world from destruction, and find his way back to the peaceful land of Hyrule in just three days! Use the Ocarina's power to manipulate time, and plan your schedule as you solve mind-boggling puzzles and dungeons!”

While the Nintendo 64 emulation leaves a lot to be desired, Nintendo has shown signs of improving it slowly over time. It was recently discovered that water reflections have now been restored during a pivotal boss fight in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Hopefully this shows a willingness on Nintendo’s part to be more flexible than they are known to be when it comes to accessibility, customisability, and overall player choice and options.

When Nintendo officially announced its Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) Expansion Pack, adding Nintendo 64 and SEGA games, many were left wondering just how often this service would be supported with new games. Currently, Nintendo is continuing its trend of releasing a new title each month – with Banjo-Kazooie coming next.

Shortly following the addition of Paper Mario to the Nintendo Switch Online’s N64 backwards compatibility service, Nintendo announced that one of the classic console’s best games will be coming next.

Making the announcement on Twitter the official Nintendo account said “Guh-huh! Head to Spiral Mountain when Banjo-Kazooie joins the Nintendo 64 games line-up available to #NintendoSwitchOnline + Expansion Pack members in January!”

It is exciting to see one of the most well-loved N64 games being added to the service – especially as Nintendo no longer owns the rights to the Banjo-Kazooie franchise (though that being said, current-owner Microsoft has previously shown a willingness to be flexible with the IP).

Of course, the NSO service does suffer from some issues still in many of the N64 games, so hopefully Banjo-Kazooie isn’t hit with the same problems. We will have to wait and see. Banjo-Kazooie is one of the highest rated games on the Nintendo 64, and so hopefully its Switch version is well-represented.

In the past, Nintendo would honour its legacy titles by offering them for sale through the eShop. With the Switch however, the console manufacturer opted to create a subscription service instead. Years after the last major update adding SNES titles, the Switch finally saw Nintendo 64 games release onto the platform via an Expansion Pack. This ‘Expansion Pack’ has now gotten its first update, but is only adding one new game.

Making the announcement, Nintendo revealed that the Nintendo 64 classic ‘Paper Mario’ would be coming to the Switch’s NSO + Expansion Pack service. Joining on the 10th of December, Paper Mario is the first entry in the spin-off RPG sub franchise, one which experiments with both art style and genre.

The game received universal acclaim from both critics and fans alike at the time with IGN claiming it to be “a fantastically deep, intuitively designed, and wonderfully rewarding experience complete with enhanced takes on old-school turn-based fighting mechanics and a statistic system that would satisfy any RPG fanatic.”

Even though there is no denying that Paper Mario is a valuable addition to the N64 Online service, offering just one game can be seen as being stingy by some – especially when PlayStation offers at least 3 modern games every month, and Xbox Game Pass manages to include all first party, and many major third party releases throughout every single month. Hopefully Nintendo rethinks their retro game strategy.

When the Nintendo switch Online Expansion Pack was first announced, many eagle eyed fans noticed that the European announcement video featured Nintendo 64 gameplay running at 50hz. While an accurate emulation of the European experience, some fans were disappointed by this decision. Fortunately, Nintendo has now confirmed that you can play at both 50hz and 60hz.

Taking to Twitter to clarify, the European Nintendo account confirmed that “All Nintendo 64 games included with #NintendoSwitchOnline + Expansion Pack can be played in 60Hz English language versions. Select games will also have the option to play the original European PAL version with language options.”

This poses a relief, as for some, the idea of playing these classic titles at 50hz was much less enticing. While N64 games originally ran at 50hz in Europe, this was never the intended refresh rate, with games being slowed down on all fronts including audio as a result.

Though not the creator’s intent, many European Switch owners may want to experience these classic games as they did back in the day on the original hardware. As such, it is nice to see Nintendo giving European owners the option to choose between 50hz and 60hz. There is no right or wrong, just options – and it is good to see Nintendo offering options.

Ever since the announcement of the Nintendo Switch Online service, many fans have been disappointed at the service’s relative lack of systems supported, with only NES and SNES games being added since the console's launch in 2017. Nintendo 64 games have finally been announced for the service – though fans will have to pay extra for the privilage.

Announced at the recent Nintendo Direct, the console manufacturer revealed that Nintendo 64 games will be coming to the NSO service. That is not all however, as in a surprise announcement, it was revealed that SEGA’s Genesis / Mega Drive system would also be coming to the service. These two consoles however are being included as part of what is being called the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack – costing extra money.

Launching in October, the games coming from the N64 are:

  • Super Mario 64
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • Mario Kart 64
  • Star Fox 64
  • Sin and Punishment
  • Dr. Mario 64
  • Mario Tennis 64
  • WinBack
  • Yoshi’s Story

The SEGA Mega Drive games being added meanwhile will be:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Contra: Hard Corps
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • Golden Axe
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • M.U.S.H.A.
  • Phantasy Star IV
  • Ristar
  • Shining Force
  • Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
  • Strider

The console manufacturer has confirmed that as with the NES and SNES, more games will be added later on, including:

  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Pokémon Snap
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
  • Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
  • Mario Golf
  • Paper Mario

Though the Nintendo Switch Online service is relatively cheap, it has historically offered very little. While it is somewhat disappointing to see these games being added for an extra cost, it could be justified as long as said cost for these systems is minimal. No pricing has been announced yet, so we will have to wait and see.

Ever since its founding in 1985, Rare has been the brains behind a number of classic video game titles and franchises, its most lucrative period of which was most likely during the Nintendo 64 era. One of the games which never made its way to the console however was Dinosaur Planet. Now thanks to an unreleased build, fans have been able to take a look at the game.

As announced by game preservationists ‘Forest of Illusion’ a December 2000 build of Rare’s unreleased ‘Dinosaur Planet’ has now been released. This build was reportedly obtained by purchasing the disc from a private game collector in Sweden for an unknown sum.

Following this, gameplay of the title has been shown off, 20 minutes of which can be found HERE thanks to Digital Foundry’s John Linneman who managed to get the game running on a Nintendo 64.

Dinosaur Planet was a 3D adventure game which was originally intended to release on the Nintendo 64. Eventually however, the game was restructured and released as Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube in 2002. It is interesting to see just how different the build is from the final game, and what could have been, had the game not been altered to tie into the Star Fox franchise (a decision which was reportedly suggested by Shigeru Miyamoto).

While it seems as though the Virtual Console is a thing of the past, NES games are available on the Nintendo Switch via its accompanying Online subscription. Nintendo could have plans to expand this roster of retro games if a datamine is to be believed, as code for a range of SNES games and other emulators has supposedly been uncovered within the source files.

After diving into the source code for NES Online, Nintendo modder KapuccinoHeck claims to have found a surprisingly long list of references to games originally released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). As noted by Polygon, there is currently a lot of overlap with the games housed on the self-contained SNES Classic miniature console.

This isn’t all too surprising, if the leak has credibility, considering the games currently circulating the NES selection on Nintendo Switch share many titles in common with the NES Classic. Of course, the leak shows some exceptions. While the SNES Classic-exclusive Star Fox 2 appears on the list, Breath of Fire 2, Pilotwings and Demon’s Crest happen to be new additions.

Adding to the findings is collaborator OatmealDome, who has seemingly discovered various emulators under different codenames. Kachikachi is otherwise identified as the same software used in the NES Classic, while Canoe is believed to be the moniker for the hinted SNES emulator. Two more “Emulator Types” were found under the names Hiyoko and Count. While first guesses would point to both Nintendo 64 and the long-hinted Gamecube emulators eventually coming to the Switch, Count is likely just the total number of emulators in programming language.

Of course, Nintendo has not announced any plans to bring SNES, Nintendo 64 or Gamecube games to the Switch, so it’s best to take this information with a pinch of salt for the time being. In the meantime, the company is continuously expanding its library of NES games, as Zelda II: The Adventures of Link and Blaster Master arrived just this week.

KitGuru Says: With just 29 games in total under the NES banner and an underwhelming social system, SNES games would be a welcome addition to entice subscribers. Still, I can’t help but feel that this is a poor effort from a company that’s heavily relied on its back catalogue in the past. Then again, I just miss Virtual Console. Would you like to see SNES, N64 and Gamecube games arrive one day?

The news about a western release of Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains wasn't the only big story from Nintendo yesterday. Not by a long shot. One that's likely to capture the imagination of a more wide reaching audience than the actions of a few survey corps members, is that the Wii U is getting a library of DS and N64 games, starting with Super Mario 64. And on top of that, there's a couple of updates on Mario Kart's upcoming DLC too.

While many N64 classics are set to be released on the Wii U over the coming months, Super Mario 64 is the first and it's available now! That makes sense, since it was one of the main launch titles for the N64 – along with Pilotwings – and is to date one of Nintendo's best selling games. It's launched along with a few other classics like Donkey Kong 64 and WarioWare: Touched for £9 each.

Beyond that exciting news however, Mario Kart 8's DLC is being brought forward and will release on 23rd April, instead of its intended May date. When released, it will add three new characters to the game, some new karts and accessories and two new sets of tracks to race on. Other additions include new racing suits for amiibo owners and a brand new 200CC mode, which will make braking a valuable skill in MK's races.

The internet was pleasantly surprised last week when a fan-made, HD remake of Mario 64's first level was made available online for people to play in their browser. Thanks to the power of the Unity engine, we could all be whisked back to the mid-90s, where Nintendo was ruling the roost with its new N64 platform. However we didn't get long to enjoy it, as Nintendo's lawyers soon caught wind, and after a complaint to Cloudare, they've taken the serving page offline.

Visiting the site now, simply takes you to a landing page detailing the takedown notice and the response of the individual who put the playable level up “for a friend,” in the first place. The notice cites Nintendo as being behind the claim.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8-2TF3Okyw']

Fortunately then, while you can't play the level in your browser anymore, you can still download it from developer Roystan Ross' site, who has it hosted in several different locations, with clear indication that this is a fan-project, with no commercial intentions and should therefore be legally allowed to exist and distributed.

It may be the case of course that before long Nintendo also pushes to take down these mirrors, but it seems likely that fans of the little remake will keep it alive through torrents and other file sharing services. If anything though, this should serve as a wakeup call to Nintendo that some of its classic games, Mario 64 specifically, would be very welcome if re-released with an HD facelift.

KitGuru Says: It may not have the cat climbing abilities of New Super Mario World 3D, but Mario 64 has some lovely level design and the HD visuals don't detract from the original styling which is great to see. Also that music is going to stick in my head all day.

Take this with a giant hunk of salt as there's little to go on with this one but some speculation from a random blog, but Nintendo might be working on a new Diddy Kong Racing. The person behind these rumours makes claims that can't be verified of course, but they also make some interesting points that could hint at a new version of the N64 classic being in the works.

According to WiiUDaily's source on this one, Nintendo was actually working with Donkey Kong Country makers, Monster Games, on a sequel to Diddy Kong Racing back in the late 2000s for the Wii, however after poor sales of Donkey Kong Country Barrel Blast and the DS version of Diddy Kong Racing, it was shelved.

Ultimately, the rumour is that the game became Excitebike Trick Racing, which came out on the Wii in 2009. Now though, a new Diddy Kong Racing is apparently in the works, having gotten a boost as a genre from the strong sales of Mario Kart 8. Supposedly Nintendo originally planned to show it off at E3 this year, but held back in-case it cannibalised the sales of the new Mario Kart.

If it does appear, it's expected to show up sometime in 2015.

Which characters would you want to see return? My favourite was always Bumper.

The plan is said to be an essentially updated version of the original, with a hub world adventure segment, as well as online and local cooperative and competitive play for races. The premise of the game is said to be all of Nintendo's lesser known characters, fighting out to see who's the best. Perhaps then they could be upgraded to join the ranks of the Mario Kart roster, alongside all of Bowser's children that nobody cares about.

Of course, which characters are present, will depend on whether Microsoft wants to sell the rights to its roster. Conker for one, is owned by Microsoft after Rare was bought up by the software giant in 2002.

KitGuru Says: If you want to jump straight to the source on this one, it's KevinCallahanGames, which is a brand new blog featuring just this post, but there's no ads anywhere so unless he was just hoping to stir up controversy as an experiment, it doesn't seem to be particularly worthwhile making all of this up.

What do you guys think?

Would you like to see some classic N64 titles remade and put on the Nintendo Eshop? I know some people who still own N64's and other retro consoles and it seems Nintendo knows too. A new rumour going around suggests that Nintendo is working on remaking several classic titles in HD, the remakes will be part of the ‘Reumagined' series for the Wii U.

The first title said to be getting the HD treatment would be Mario 64 with some added features. The game may allow two player co-op with both Mario and Luigi on the screen at the same time along with possible online and racing modes as well. Seeing this extra content would be a step in the right direction as usually when we get a HD remake it is just a graphics upgrade with nothing extra to make it feel like a new game.

The Reumagined series is said to span across seven titles and will cost $30 straight from the eShop, these will only be available on the Wii U. It's possible that the success of Zelda Wind Waker HD has got Nintendo thinking that more HD remakes will help get Wii U consoles into people's homes.

KitGuru Says: This is still just a rumour so take everything with a grain of salt but it would be interesting to see what titles come out and how this would affect Wii U sales. Would you guys be interested in seeing some older games revived for the current generation?

Conker's Bad Fur Day was one of the most unique games of its generation. It featured a foul mouthed, violent squirrel, hoards of movie references, toilet humour and sex jokes – all of it exclusively on the almost always family friendly Nintendo console, the N64. Over a decade after release, the people behind its creation have now come together to talk about it and it's awesome.

Be aware, that almost from the get go, the language and themes discussed are a wonderful homage to Conker's gameplay, so if you found the original game too much for your delicate ears, the people behind it are just as foul mouthed – so steer clear.

Otherwise here's the first episode (very NSFW):

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgtAXCaSlpk#!']

Some of the notably interesting snippets from this first outing, include the fact that Donkey Kong 64 cost a fortune, because it had to ship with the expanded N64 memory module, due to a game breaking bug in the standard version. Conker's resolution was stretched out to prevent the need of the memory expansion – and thereby keep the audience for the game as wide as possible.

Also, did you know that textures in the game were only 4kb in size? 32×32 pixels a piece. There was also a lot of competition between the “barns,” at RARE, the teams that were working on different games. They hated each other, in a friendly sort of way. This led to much competition between the team working on Banjo Kazooie and the Conker boys.

KitGuru Says: The following episodes also came out today, so there's a good few hours of swearing and derision of other game developers, along with Conker gameplay – or at least, menu play in the first part – to be had. So get watching.
