For the past few years, more and more titles have begun to accept and adopt cross-play between consoles and PCs. Until now however, EA had yet to join in. Finally, following the footsteps of games such as Modern Warfare, Minecraft and Rocket League, Need for Speed Heat will be adding support for cross-play – in what will be the final update for the racing title.

In an update on EA’s website, the General Manager of Criterion Games – Matt Webster – announced that “At Criterion, we've always believed that games are better with friends. We don’t want your platform of choice to be a barrier for that experience. So we're thrilled to let you all know that on June 9, Need for Speed Heat will be the first EA title to offer cross-play, meaning that players – regardless of their platform – can jump into Palm City together as one, united community.”

Though this news is undoubtedly exciting for fans as well as for the longevity of the game, Webster did note that “this will be the final update for Need for Speed Heat”. Fortunately, the reason for this is due to the fact that the studio is “shift[ing] gears into the future with full focus on developing the next Need for Speed game.”

Back in February, it was announced that Criterion Games (who developed the Need For Speed games between 2010-2013 as well as the Burnout series) would be seeing its grand return to the franchise – after lending its talents to other EA studios’ titles such as Battlefront II and Battlefield V. There is currently no information on this upcoming Need for Speed title, though considering there has been a new NFS game almost every year since 2000, the wait hopefully shouldn’t be too long.

While EA's prized racing franchise has run into plenty of trouble over the current console generation, Need for Speed keeps coming back. The last entry in the series seemed promising but was bogged down by a microtransaction-riddled and randomised car modification system. This week, Need for Speed Heat has snuck out onto the market without much of a marketing build up. Despite that, hopefully this can act as a return to form for the series.

Need for Speed Heat was only announced in mid-August, skipping over big industry events like E3. The game takes place in Palm City, a fictional open world rendition of Miami, where players will take part in legal day-time races, in addition to illegal street races at night. The car modding system has been overhauled since NFS: Payback, with a ton of options for style and performance changes.

You earn funds for new cars and upgrades via legal races during the day and illegal street races at night, at which point, the police will attempt to put a stop to the action. As long as you're up to the challenge, you can win the race and avoid run-ins with the law for bigger rewards, which can then be used for other upgrades.

At launch, there are 127 different cars in the game, although there will likely be more added through DLC later down the line. Need for Speed Heat is currently available across PC, Xbox One and PS4. Those with EA Access or Origin Access can play for 10 hours before buying, while Origin Access Premier subscribers can play the full game for as long as they want.

KitGuru Says: EA hasn't generated a ton of buzz for Need for Speed Heat during the build-up to launch, so it will be interesting to see how players end up feeling about any DLC offerings or microtransactions that are sure to come eventually, even if they aren't there on day-one. Are any of you planning on trying this out over the weekend?

Just one month ago, Rockstar finally broke its silence and officially announced Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC, with the game coming to the Rockstar Launcher, Epic Games Store and eventually, Steam. The game is launching tomorrow and as usual, Nvidia already has a Game Ready driver rolling out in preparation.

Driver version 441.12 is now rolling out through the GeForce Experience. The new update includes the usual day-one optimisations, although Nvidia has also included some recommended GPU/detail setting combinations for getting 60 frames per second at 4K, 1440p and 1080p. According to Nvidia, an RTX 2080Ti will get you 4K/60 gameplay with a mix of medium and high detail settings. Meanwhile, an RTX 2070 SUPER will do the job for 1440p with high settings. Finally, the RTX 2060 should also be capable of running the game at high details for 1080p and 60fps.

Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't the only big news here though. Need for Speed Heat is also coming out later this week and the new driver has day-one optimisations for that too.

Finally, this new driver also enables G-Sync Compatible support for LG's 2019 4K OLED TVs, including the B9, C9 and E9 models, although if you own one of those TVs, this driver also needs to be combined with a firmware update from LG, which is currently only available in the US, Canada and Mexico with other regions to follow soon.

KitGuru Says: It had completely slipped my mind that Red Dead Redemption 2 is launching on PC tomorrow. I'll be looking forward to checking it out myself at some point this week. Are any of you planning on grabbing RDR2 for PC at launch, or even Need for Speed Heat later this week?
