Shortly following the launch of The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Naughty Dog released Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II. The two-hour long documentary holds many revelations within it, but one of the most interesting is the fact that Naughty Dog’s next game is not a sequel to TLOU as many expected – though “there is one more chapter to the story.”

Based on previous interviews featuring Neil Druckmann, many fans believed that the team at Naughty Dog have been working on a Last of Us Part III for a while now. According to the man himself however, this is in fact not the case, saying during the documentary (and as transcribed by ResetEra user Mattmo831):

“I did some other interview where someone asked me about The Last of Us, and would there be any more stories or something. I mentioned we have written a story that takes place after Last of Us II that stars Tommy. I hope one day we get to make it. The headlines across the industry were like, ‘Naughty Dog Has Outlined The Last of Us Part III.' And that's actually wrong. It was always a small story, it was never a full title.”

Speaking on this smaller spin-off, Druckmann continued, “At the time, we had higher priorities at Naughty Dog, to fix our pipeline, to fix work-life balance issues. Just based on where we were, I didn't wanna prioritise this story, so that story was shelved. I still believe one day it will see the light of day. I don't know if it'll be a game or a show… TBD.”

All that said, it seems as though a 3rd entry in The Last of Us will happen eventually, with Druckmann revealing that an actual Part III has since been conceptualised, saying:

“I've been thinking about, ‘Is there a concept there?’ And for now years, I haven't been able to find that concept. But recently that's changed. I don't have a story, but I do have that concept, that, to me, is as exciting as I, as exciting as II, is its own thing, yet has this through-line for all 3. So it does feel like there's probably one more chapter to this story.”

The ending of The Last of Us Part II is a bittersweet one, and could certainly serve as the end of the franchise. That said, the best things always come in threes – and so hopefully The Last of Us Part III does eventually come to fruition.

As a studio, Naughty Dog is home to many developers who have stayed loyal to the company for years – or decades even – witnessing and contributing to its momentous growth over the generations. One such developer is Naughty Dog Co-President Evan Wells, who after 25 years at the studio, has announced his retirement.

Taking to the studio’s blog, Evan Wells wrote “After 25 years at Naughty Dog, I wanted to share with all of you that I've decided to retire at the end of this year. This is something that I've been discussing with Naughty Dog's Studio Leadership Team for well over a year, and with Neil for even longer than that. The decision brings with it overwhelming and conflicting emotions, but I've come to realize that I'm content with my time at the studio and all that we've accomplished together over the last 25 years.”

Speaking on the future of the studio without him, Wells continued, “I couldn't be more confident in Neil's ability to carry on running the studio. It's the right time for me to provide the opportunity for him and the others on the Studio Leadership Team to steer the studio into a successful future,” adding that “I couldn't be more excited about our current projects and not getting to see those games to completion is going to be hard. But we've never had a stronger team in place to ensure that we will deliver them in a way that will set industry standards and exceed all expectations.”

The post is lengthy and includes many anecdotes, however Wells concludes the announcement by saying “Thank you for what has truly been a tremendous adventure, I'm thrilled to see what the future holds for this inspiring team and I'm so proud of you all!”

With Wells leaving, Neil Druckmann seems set to be the only President of Naughty Dog. It will be interesting to see how this new era for the studio progresses.

While many fans enjoyed The Last of Us Part II, some elements of its story were divisive among fans. Naughty Dog has not yet announced any plans for a third game, but the team is kicking around some ideas.

This week, The Last of Us co-creator and director, Neil Druckmann, told Buzzfeed that while the studio has officially moved on from Uncharted, they are still open to another game in The Last of Us series, but it all hinges on coming up with the right idea.

“For us, Uncharted was insanely successful — Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games — and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done. We’re moving on”, Druckmann said in the interview.

“Likewise, with The Last of Us, it’s up to us whether we want to continue it or not. Our process is the same thing we did when we did Part 2, which is if we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love — just like the first and second game did — then we will tell that story. If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end.”

Recently, The Last of Us has repeatedly appeared in headlines, in part due to the success of the HBO TV series, which began airing earlier this month to great critical acclaim. With the show being so successful, it is difficult to believe that Sony wouldn't want to capitalise on the opportunity with another game.

KitGuru Says: Naughty Dog is perhaps the best first-party studio under Sony, so while I do believe that they wouldn't be forced to develop a third game, I do think it is inevitable that we'll see another game in this series, even if it shifts to focus on other characters and other parts of the world impacted by the outbreak.

HBO’s The Last of Us TV show adaptation is set to premiere in just a few short weeks on the 15th of January 2023. Ahead of the show’s launch, TLOU creator and game director Neil Druckmann discussed the approach taken with this adaptation, revealing that only “the very essential” violence from the game will be kept for the show.

In an interview with SFX Magazine (and reported on by GamesRadar), Druckmann discussed the upcoming Last of Us TV show, comparing it to the game and explaining the differences needed to be made in order to correctly adapt the game into a different medium, saying:

“We need a certain amount of action, or violence [in the game], that we could use for mechanics so you could connect with Joel and get into a flow state. Then you would really feel like you're connected with this on-screen avatar and you're seeing the world through his eyes.”

Druckmann continued, “But that doesn't exist in a passive medium. One of the things that I loved hearing from [co-creator Craig Mazin] and HBO very early on was, ‘Let's take out all the violence except for the very essential.' That allowed the violence to have even more impact than in the game, because when you hold on showing the threat and you're seeing people's reaction to a threat, that makes it scarier. And when we do reveal the infected and the Clickers, you get to see what brought down humanity and why everyone is so scared.”

The Last of Us is a very violent game, and this works for the context of the game with us playing as the main character. This move to tone down the show slightly in terms of the consistency of the violence should make for an even more impactful viewing experience and so it is undoubtedly the right move.

Of all the live action adaptations of popular video games, one of the most anticipated is HBO’s take on The Last of Us. Written by Neil Druckmann and created by Craig Mazin, the show has garnered a lot of talent, and as such, a lot of excitement. According to Druckmann, despite the critical acclaim of both games, HBO’s adaptation will “deviate greatly from the story” in certain moments.

In an SXSW talk (as transcribed by IGN), Neil Druckmann discussed the team’s approach to this adaptation, saying that “We talked at length [that season 1 of the show is going to be [the first game],” adding that “the philosophical underpinnings of the story” was the most important element to get right.

Druckmann continued, “As far as the superficial things, like should [a character] wear the same plaid shirt or the same red shirt? They might or might not appear in it, that’s way less important to us than getting the core of who these people are and the core of their journey.”

Though the first season will cover the events of the original game, Druckmann noted that the adaptation moves away “from hardcore action” to focus “more on the drama of the character”. Furthermore, “Some of [Druckmann’s] favorite episodes so far have deviated greatly from the story, and I can’t wait for people to see them.”

The story of The Last of Us is nearly universally loved, and so it will be interesting to see not only new actors play the iconic roles of Ellie and Joel, but also to see what changes Druckmann is referring to, and just how much they will deviate from the story of the first game. Either way, there is no denying that there are many eyes set upon HBO’s The Last of Us. Hopefully it is just as well received as the game itself.

For years, Neil Druckmann has served as an important member of Naughty Dog. starting in 2004 as a gameplay programmer, Druckmann slowly worked his way up the studio’s ladder. Now, following the studio’s latest launch, it has been announced that Neil Druckmann will become co-president at Naughty Dog.

In an announcement on its website, Naughty Dog’s president Evan Wells released an update saying “As we close out a year that has seen its challenges as we all live through a global pandemic, there have been bright moments too. One exciting moment for Naughty Dog was the long-anticipated release of The Last of Us Part II in June. Another moment comes today as we wanted to share some other terrific news about the studio.”

This ‘terrific news’ pertains to the fact that “Neil Druckmann now joins me as Co-President of Naughty Dog, after serving almost three years as Vice President. In addition, we’re welcoming Alison Mori and Christian Gyrling as Vice Presidents of Naughty Dog. Prior to becoming Vice President, Alison served as our Director of Operations and Christian served as our Co-Director of Programming.”

Wells concluded by saying “We have such an incredible team at Naughty Dog and being able to work alongside each and every one of them is especially meaningful these days. I feel proud of the team when I’m able to recognize their accomplishments and contributions to the studio. Please join me in giving them all a big congratulations!”

Many of these promotions feel like natural progressions and so while it may not come as a huge surprise, it is certainly a welcome move, especially following the departure of Bruce Straley from Naughty Dog in 2014.

HBO’s The Last of Us is likely one of the highest profile video game adaptations currently in development. The TV show will adapt the story from the first game, though according to the show’s creator there will be at least one “jaw drop” moment that was originally intended to be in the PlayStation exclusive.

In a recent interview with BBC (and transcribed by EuroGamer), Craig Mazin, the award-winning creator of HBO’s Chernobyl and the creator of The Last of Us adaptation, went into detail regarding his mentality and thought process behind the adaptation of the critically acclaimed Naughty Dog video game.

Speaking on the adaptation, Mazin revealed that “we're creating new [things] and re-imagining what is already there to present it for a different format,” saying that “our goal is not to keep you in love with The Last of Us, but to make you fall in love with it again in a different way. It's a passive way of taking it in, instead of playing it, but you'll be experiencing more, with more characters in more ways. I think we've got something good going.”

To fans of the game, Mazin claimed that “our intention is that you will watch the show and say ‘this has violated nothing of what I loved about the game, and what I witnessed in the game, but it has also brought me a whole lot more – things I did not know, really amazing things'.”

Lasly, as a tease, Mazin revealed that Neil Druckmann – one of The Last of Us’ creators – told Mazin of a “jaw drop” moment that was cut from the original game, to which his response was “for sure, we have to do that. You couldn't stop me doing that. You will have to shoot me [to stop me] from doing that. And there were a few things like that.”

In the past, direct video game adaptations have often paled in comparison to their video game counterparts. It is therefore encouraging to see that HBO’s The Last of Us is attempting to circumvent many of these common mistakes.

Play testers have an important role in the development of every video game. Generally, these play testers would offer feedback primarily on gameplay aspects and the overall experience. Interestingly however, for the upcoming PlayStation exclusive, The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog filmed and analysed the facial reactions of its play testers during ‘emotional beats’, later altering these moments to maximise player reactions.

In an article by Wired, it was revealed that “[Neil] Druckmann's team [watched] for players' minute responses to the narrative and emotional beats” with the dev team “log[ing] and annotat[ing] every clench of the law and widening of the eyes” all in the name of ensuring that players felt the maximum impact of these moments.

According to Druckmann: “I saw one girl get to this sequence that took us a long time to get to land. And she's bawling. I'm watching her, and I'm starting to cry because she's crying, and I'm like, all these years of work for a couple-of-minutes sequence. It's all for this—just to be able to get this person to feel this experience.”

There was no doubt that The Last of Us Part II was going to be an emotional game, but it is nonetheless interesting to see that the team at Naughty Dog specifically studied the facial and emotional reactions of players in order to ensure that the game is as evocative as possible.

With The Last of Us Part II set to launch on the 19th of June, the game’s Creative Director – Neil Druckmann – has already begun to think about his next project. In a recent interview, Druckmann stated that he is undecided between moving on to a third entry in The Last of Us franchise, or a new IP entirely.

In an interview with GQ, Neil Druckmann hinted at where he might go following the release of The Last of Us Part II, explaining that “as you start wrapping things up, creatively there are fewer and fewer responsibilities and my mind can't help but think about the next thing. So yeah, the next thing could be a Part III, the next thing could be some new IP.”

This is especially noteworthy as following the release of the original ‘The Last of Us’ in 2013, Neil Druckmann offered similar sentiments regarding a potential sequel – later choosing to work on Uncharted 4.

It would seem as though Druckmann’s mind has yet to be made up, claiming that (as GQ put it): “Ultimately, the best idea wins”. That being said, if a third entry were to be made, it would seemingly be focused on familiar characters and locations, as according to Druckmann if that weren’t the case, then “to me, at that point, you might as well just do a new IP.”

Though The Last of Us struggled for years to get a film adaptation off the ground, the recently revealed HBO TV adaptation appears to be going from strength to strength. It has now been confirmed that the pilot episode of the series will be directed by none other than Johan Renck – the Emmy-winning Director responsible for all five Chernobyl episodes.

In a recent interview with ‘DiscussingFilm’, Johan Renck was asked about the fact that “Craig [Mazin’s] next series will be The Last of Us for HBO. Would you want to direct that series and collaborate with him again?” to which Renck revealed that “I’m an executive producer on it and attached to it. It’s an ongoing TV series. So that’s not something that I will be able to take on to that extent, but I’m part of that series and I will be directing at least the pilot. Then we’ll see how it goes on further.”

This is especially notable as Johan Renck was responsible for directing all 5 episodes of Chernobyl, for which he was awarded an Emmy. Chernobyl was also distributed by HBO in 2019, and received over 100 nominations for various awards, including Emmys for “Outstanding Writing” (Craig Mazin) and “Outstanding directing” (Johan Renck).

With Craig Mazin, Johan Renck, HBO, Neil Druckmann and Gustavo Santaolalla all tied to the upcoming adaptation, it is looking as though HBO’s The Last of Us has the potential to be the highest rated video game adaptation of all time.

The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog’s much-anticipated sequel, has had a tumultuous development. Originally set to release on the 21st of February, the game was delayed to the 29th of May citing the need for extra polish. Later however, due to COVID-19 the game was delayed indefinitely. Fortunately, it was later announced that the title would be arriving on the 19th of June. It would seem as though this will indeed be its launch day, as the game has officially been confirmed to have gone gold.

Taking to YouTube to make the announcement, The Last of Us Part II’s Director Neil Druckmann stated that the game had now officially “gone gold”, meaning that the studio has submitted the gold master version of the game to Sony.

Following the submission of the gold master, disks can be pressed with the finalised software, and the storefronts can upload the final version of the game ready for release. It’s a process that every game in development goes through, and means that (aside from post-launch patches) the game is complete and ready to play.

This announcement means that factories and other external factors of production have over a month and a half to ensure that The Last of Us Part II is able to hit its revised release date.

The journey of The Last of Us Part II has been filled with countless delays and massive leaks, but finally it's looking as though fans won’t have to wait too much longer to experience Naughty Dog’s PlayStation 4 swan song.

Talk of a film adaptation of The Last of Us has been ongoing for years now, ever since March 2014, when Sam Raimi was announced to be producing the adaptation. Since then, the film has gone through script rewrites, a shift in focus, and creative disputes, amongst a litany of other complications. Finally, 5 years later, the adaptation of The Last of Us has been revived – this time in TV form.

Set to be released by HBO and headed by Craig Mazin, the Creator, Executive Producer and Writer of the multi-award winning TV miniseries ‘Chernobyl’, The Last of Us adaptation will also see Neil Druckmann – the Creative Director and Writer of the game – involved as writer and Executive Producer of the series. The Last of Us’ adaptation will serve as the first television series to come from the recently formed PlayStation Productions.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Mazin stated that “Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus. Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I'm so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.”

Neil meanwhile, claimed that “[f]rom the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us”. According to Druckmann, “[w]ith Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn't think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.”

HBO’s programming president, Casey Bloys called the collaboration “an incredibly exciting opportunity for us to partner with Craig, Neil, Carolyn and the teams at Sony, Naughty Dog and PlayStation to bring the virtual world of this acclaimed game to life”. HBO is best known for the TV shows Game of Thrones, The Wire, Westworld, and most recently Watchmen. The television network has garnered a reputation for producing film-quality shows with equally impressive budgets.

Video games are longer experiences and so are more suited to TV adaptations as opposed to films, especially with a game as nuanced and well revered as The Last of Us. It would seem as if all the stars have aligned for an adaptation that could be as well received as the game itself. Only time will tell.
