Valiant Hearts: The Great War released over a decade ago as one of Ubisoft's most praised games at the time, but a sequel titled Valiant Hearts: Coming Home only just released last year. Currently, this sequel is exclusive to Netflix's mobile gaming platform, but recent leaks suggest a console release is finally on the way.

According to VGC, the Brazil ratings board website has listed Valiant Hearts: Coming Home for multiple consoles, including Xbox One, Switch, and PlayStation 4. Usually, age ratings on such websites indicate a game's existence, pointing towards an upcoming release. It's been a little over a year since Coming Home was published on Netflix, and as such, it's probable that the timed exclusivity has expired, meaning the game can now be published on other platforms.

Valiant Hearts: Coming Home, a sequel set after the first game's events, tells the heart-wrenching stories of several individuals caught up in the war. The game has been developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, the same studio behind the original game and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and has received generally favourable reviews, achieving a 73 Metacritic score.

Currently, the game is only available via the Android and iOS Netflix apps.

Earlier this month, we reported on a rumour claiming that SEGA are preparing to launch a Sonic the Hedgehog themed Fall Guys-like experience for mobile devices. The leaker has since returned with even more claims, revealing that the publisher is in fact working on 3 separate Sonic games for the platform.

Following on from the leak earlier this month claiming that “this year, a new Sonic spin-off title will be released for mobile [whose] gameplay elements will be similar to Fall Guys.” notable SEGA/ATLUS leaker ‘MbKKssTBhz5’ returned with even more Sonic news, taking to Twitter to say:

“A Sonic Chao game and new Sonic sports title are both currently in development for mobile devices,” adding that “the Sonic Chao title will be exclusive to Netflix. The Sonic sports title will be on Apple Arcade.”

As mentioned previously, the Fall Guys-like title will not be limited to any service, and will instead be made available directly through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store “at the beginning of summer.”

Sonic has always had a notable presence on mobile, with a number of the Blue Blur’s free-to-play efforts surpassing 100 million downloads on Android alone. Hopefully these upcoming titles offer quality experiences.

Following the success of Persona 5, ATLUS have been pushed into the limelight, with the studio tackling new games, IPs and platforms. According to one insider, ATLUS is currently working on multiple games for Netflix.

As shared by a notable ATLUS leaker, the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei creators are reportedly “developing multiple titles for the Netflix mobile game platform,” with the insider adding that “One of these titles are related to Shin Megami Tensei series.”

Over the past few years Netflix has accumulated a rather healthy library of games on its service, ranging from ports of console games to titles based on their own original shows. As mentioned by the leaker, at least one of these titles will be based on the studio’s popular Shin Megami Tensei series.

That said, it is currently unknown whether this title will be developed specifically for Netflix or if ATLUS are working on porting some of their pre-existing titles – perhaps earlier entries in the series.

While Netflix’s game library does feature a decent amount of shovelware, the streaming service has put greater emphasis on bringing quality titles to the service over time. Just some of the best include Death’s Door; TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge; Before Your Eyes; Dead Cells; OXENFREE; World of Goo and the recently-added GTA Trilogy. Hopefully ATLUS’ efforts are going towards something substantive.

Back in 2012, video games took the top spot in the UK when it came to ranking the biggest entertainment mediums by revenue. In the decade since, gaming has remained consistently at the top…until now, with video content officially surpassing gaming as the biggest entertainment medium in the UK.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, the trade body representing video, music and games retailers in the UK – ERA – released their latest figures, revealing that for the first time in over a decade, video games are no longer at the top spot.

With a 2.9% increase year-over-year, the UK’s video games industry amassed a total revenue of £4.74 Billion across PC, mobile and consoles in 2023. While an impressive amount with a healthy level of growth, the video industry saw a huge spike in 2023, growing by a whopping 10% to £4.9 Billion.

According to ERA, the reason for such a high growth in video was thanks to subscription services like Netflix, Disney Plus and Apple TV – with subscription revenue said to account for 89% of the video market.

As mentioned, this marks the first time since 2012 that video games have not been at the top of the leaderboard. It will be interesting to see whether this trend will continue for years to come – or if video games will once again reclaim the top spot in 2024. We will have to wait and see.

Netflix and Riot impressed us all with the debut of Arcane's first season. The animated series, based on the League of Legends IP, had a critically acclaimed run and now, we have our first look at the long awaited second season.

The first teaser trailer for Arcane Season 2 has now dropped, giving us just a small hint at what's to come with the return of a villain from the first season.

Arcane's first season was praised for its both its animation and writing, with each episode ending up being widely discussed online during the run. It also helps that the show did not require any previous League of Legends knowledge to jump into, so even those who have never really played the game, like myself, could enjoy it from start to finish.

The first season debuted in November 2021, so it has been a pretty long wait for its return. Season 2 will debut on Netflix in November this year, so we've still got a ways to go, but we should get more information and trailers closer to release.

Back in October, we learned that Netflix was in talks with Rockstar to secure a selection of Grand Theft Auto titles to bolster its library of games. Now, Netflix has confirmed exactly that, with all subscribers set to gain access to Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition.

The Grand Theft Auto Trilogy – Definitive Edition packages GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas in remastered form. The remasters did not garner a great reception at launch due to various bugs and visual issues but much of that has been patched out since.

Netflix subscribers will get access to all three games via the Netflix mobile app for Android and iOS starting on the 14th of December. These are the native mobile versions of the game, so you'll be able to install them directly without relying on streaming.

This is the latest in Netflix's newly formed ambitions. The company has acquired a few independent studios too, which are all working on new projects, some of which are based on some of Netflix's most popular IP, like Stranger Things and Squid Game.

KitGuru Says: If you have Netflix already, then this is a pretty decent value-add if you're looking to revisit the classic Grand Theft Auto games.

Over the past year, Netflix has brought quite a few console games to mobile via its Netflix Games service, with the likes of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, Oxenfree and more being ported to mobile exclusively for subscribers. In a surprising move, the critically acclaimed rogue-lite Hades is set to be added to the service next year.

As part of the streaming service’s ‘Geeked Week’ Netflix announced that the Supergiant Games-developed Hades “is breaking new ground! The critically acclaimed rogue-like game is coming exclusively to iOS via Netflix next year.”

Additionally, the well-known indie puzzle-platformer ‘Braid’ from Jonathan Blow (of The Witness fame) is also coming to Netflix on mobile, with the company saying “Relive the nostalgia with BRAID: ANNIVERSARY EDITION! If you loved it before, get ready to fall in love again. Coming exclusively to mobile on Netflix.”

Interestingly, based on the wording it seems as though Hades will be exclusive to iOS while Braid will come to both iOS and Android. Regardless, it is cool to see that Hades (and Braid) are coming to mobile platforms – even if it is exclusive to a subscription service.

Netflix has been expanding its gaming efforts over the past year, offering everything from casual games to licensed games based on Netflix IP and even full-on console titles ported for mobile. Apparently, Netflix is setting its sights on even bigger properties and is reportedly trying to get the Grand Theft Auto games onto its service.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal (via gamedeveloper), Netflix appears to be wanting to add a great deal of cache to its gaming catalogue by adding a Grand Theft Auto game to the service.

Currently, it is unknown whether this would be a brand-new endeavour developed in partnership with Rockstar, or if it will simply be a port of the already-existing mobile entries (such as GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas).

It’s even possible that we might see GTA V brought over to mobile. Considering the fact that the game was released over 10 years ago and modern smartphones can now run a number of Triple-A titles, the concept of a mobile port of GTA V is not implausible – even if it is highly unlikely.

Regardless, getting a GTA game of any kind onto Netflix would undoubtedly boost the service’s catalogue and could shine a strong light on Netflix’s gaming ambitions. We will have to wait for official word before jumping to conclusions – but the prospect is interesting.

Over the past many years, Netflix has adapted a whole bunch of video games into anime, including Castlevania; Dragon’s Dogma; Tekken; and of course Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Now, the media giant has officially announced that they are working on an animated Tomb Raider series.

Releasing a short ‘first look’ teaser trailer, little is known about the adaptation currently, however according to Netflix the anime will feature “the iconic rise of Lara Croft” – suggesting that it will either be an origin story, or at the very least will feature Lara in her earlier years.

Additionally, Croft herself will be voiced by Hayley Atwell, who is known best perhaps for her role as Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – though has also appeared in Black Mirror and Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning.

Tomb Raider has been a multi-media franchise for decades now, with the story of Lara Croft being told and retold across 3 films, a 2007 TV show; comics; novels and a whole lot more. It will be interesting to see how this anime is ultimately received when it releases at some point in 2024.

Netflix has slowly but surely been getting into the video games market. Following their initial push into the mobile gaming sector, we have seen the streaming service branch out into publishing more and more games on multiple platforms. The company seems to be taking another step in this direction, with a AAA multi-platform shooter said to be currently in development.

As reported by the publication Gamesual, a new job listing by Netflix for a ‘Senior Gameplay Engineer – AI’ details the fact that the streaming service is working on the aforementioned title, saying “We’re looking for a creative, highly-skilled Senior Gameplay AI Engineer to help us build a brand-new, AAA, multi-platform game.”

The listing included a few more details on this unknown game, including the fact that it will be “action” focused; multiplayer in nature; likely run on Unreal Engine; and may even come to as-of-yet unreleased game platforms.

Further inferences suggest that the game could be connected to a Netflix original film or series, with one of the job responsibilities for the role of ‘Game Director’ stating that the candidate will “Develop the world/characters/narrative that are worthy of a Netflix film/TV series.”

Other ancillary details reveal that the project will likely either be a 3rd or 1st person shooter and will feature “both cooperative and competitive” elements.

Netflix has been gearing up for a big push into the gaming world for a while now, and so it will be interesting to see what exactly this unannounced project ends up being – and just how large-scale plans are for its future.

Since the addition of mobile games to Netflix in 2021, the company's aim has been to provide games for everyone on any device – including televisions and desktops. Up until now, Netflix Games was only accessible on mobile platforms, but the range of supported devices will soon grow considerably as Netflix launches the Netflix Cloud Gaming Beta app for TVs, PCs, and Macs.

Netflix has begun to roll out a restricted beta test to a small number of subscribers in Canada and the UK on selected TVs. The PC and Mac beta testing will be accessible via Netflix.com on compatible browsers in the coming weeks.

This first test will include Oxenfree and Molehew's Mining Adventure. To play the games, the idea is to use your phone as a controller. Alternately, those using PCs and Macs may use a keyboard and mouse to play on Netflix.com.

The main purpose of this restricted beta is to test the game streaming technology behind the service and how phones work as controllers. The first devices supporting the Netflix Cloud Gaming Beta app include Amazon Fire TV Streaming Media Players, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung Smart TVs, and Walmart ONN. More gadgets will be added in the future.

When Netflix first began talking about cracking down on password sharing in 2022, many claimed that the service would lose subscribers. As it turns out, Netflix's grand plan to squeeze more money out of its customers has worked, with the service gaining more subscribers than cancellations in the months following its rollout.

As part of its earnings report published this week, Netflix has announced that it has brought in 5.9 million new subscribers worldwide between April and June. Netflix began cracking down on password sharing in March, forcing users to set up their own accounts to continue watching content. To make the process easier, Netflix did implement a profile-transfer system, allowing users to take their watchlists and history with them to a new, fresh Netflix account.

According to Netflix, revenue is now higher across all regions, with new signups outnumbering the amount of cancellations. According to Netflix's CFO, Spencer Neumann, this is going to be a key driver of revenue growth for Netflix this year.

During the last quarter, Netflix earned $8.2 billion in revenue. However, due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood, content production has slowed down considerably, which will make it more difficult for services like Netflix to deliver timely new content through the rest of 2023.

KitGuru Says: Currently, Netflix doesn't have that big show that's really pulling me back in. I hope that can change eventually but with the Hollywood strikes now taking place, I'm not expecting that to happen anytime soon.

By far the biggest film of the year so far has been The Super Mario Bros. Movie, making more than $1.3 Billion over the past 3 months. After such a successful run on the Silver Screen, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has now gotten its streaming premiere date.

As reported by Deadline, following its undeniably successful cinema run, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be available to stream exactly 120 days from its initial premiere – arriving on the 3rd of August,

Due to it being distributed by Universal, the film will first be available to stream only on Peacock. This will remain the case for 4 months when it will then be made available through Netflix.

Unsurprisingly however, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will eventually find its way back off of Netflix and onto Peacock at some point next year.

With The Super Mario Bros. Movie being by far the biggest film of the year, it will be interesting to see how it performs once it is also available on streaming.

In the past year and a half or so we have seen the streaming giant Netflix expand outwards into the video game space, releasing pre-existing titles onto the platform while also acquiring studios to help make new and original content. The latest industry veteran to join Netflix is Raf Grassetti – the Art Director behind both God of War 2018 and Ragnarok.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Grassetti released a statement saying “I’m happy to announce that I’ve joined Netflix to develop a new original IP AAA game. I’m really excited to build a team and to work with the amazing Joseph Staten, Jerry Edsall and Chacko Sonny to bring a new world to life.”

As mentioned by Grassetti, they are just the latest in a long line-up of developers poached by Netflix, with prior acquirees including Joseph Staten of Bungie and 343i fame; Jerry Edsall (who previously worked at The Coalition for 8 years) and Chacko Sonny – known best for executive producing the Overwatch franchise.

Netflix has made it clear in the past that it intends to invest a lot into video games, with the streaming giant discussing its plans for developing AAA titles more than once. It will be interesting to see what Netflix’s first major internal game ends up looking like,

KitGuru says: What do you think of this latest hire? What would you like to see out of Netflix vis-a-vis gaming? Could they become a major player in the industry? Let us know down below.

Since last year, Netflix has been discussing a plan to crack down on account password sharing between households. During earlier regional tests, the price of enabling an out-of-home profile on Netflix worked out to be $2.99 USD, but the final price will be much higher, Netflix has revealed this week.

Netflix has now officially begun its crackdown on password sharing worldwide. Here in the UK, users will be asked to pay an extra £4.99 per month to enable an out-of-home profile. If the fee isn't paid, Netflix will block the account. Over in the US, the monthly fee comes in at an extra $7.99, on top of the regular, increasingly more expensive subscription plan that you already pay for.

One of the key issues here is that Netflix plans are set up to allow for multi-screen streaming. In the eyes of many users, it shouldn't matter if that screen is physically in their home or not, as they pay to stream to that many devices.

A Netflix account will now be assigned a ‘primary location', essentially the billing address, and anyone streaming from outside of that primary location will have to pay. Users will have to check in at the primary location once every 31 days, so if you are travelling extensively, then you will likely run into issues.

Netflix does expect some users to cancel following this change, but it will be interesting to see what the final numbers say. Netflix increasingly has a quality issue and fans are becoming increasingly frustrated with the amount of cancellations for new series.

343 Industries has gone through a lot of changes in the last six months, with many members of the leadership team leaving Microsoft. Joseph Staten, who was brought back to Microsoft in an effort to steer Halo Infinite back on track, has moved on from his 18 years at Microsoft to help Netflix with its burgeoning gaming arm.

Netflix established Netflix Games last year and has acquired several studios to aid in creating new content. For now, most games offered on Netflix are smaller, less graphically demanding titles, but Staten will be joining Netflix as part of a push to create bigger AAA games.

In a tweet this week, Staten announced that he is now Creative Director at Netflix Games and will be working on a “brand new AAA multiplatform game and original IP”. Interestingly, it is specified that this game will be multiplatform, indicating it will be sold as a locally playable game on consoles and PCs, rather than a game exclusively streamed through Netflix.

While the tweet does note the game will be based on an original IP, we don't know if that means an already existing Netflix Original IP, or a brand new IP altogether.

KitGuru Says: AAA game development is often a long and expensive process so it could be a long time before we see this game announced. If the costs mount up too much, it could be cancelled, as we saw with Google quickly pulling the plug on Stadia's in-development exclusives.

Netflix’s announcement that they were going to get into video games was initially met with some scepticism, however the streaming giant has found great success in bringing a number of major indie titles to mobile via its platform. Netflix seems to have big plans for its gaming division in 2023, with more than 40 titles set to be added over the course of the year.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, Netflix has spoken to the publication regarding its ongoing and future plans for its recently-formed gaming division. Since the launch of the service’s first game in November 2021, a total of 55 titles have been added to the service, including the likes of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, Oxenfree, Moonlighter and Immortality.

The team is nowhere near done however, with the streaming giant telling Gamesindustry.biz that they currently plan to release 40 titles over the course of this year. Going beyond 2023 however, Netflix reportedly has a total of 86 games in the works with 16 of them being developed by in-house studios.

The quality of games being added to Netflix has varied, however there is no denying that the service includes quite a few heavy-hitters and so them doubling down on gaming is rather exciting, especially for those who enjoy playing on mobile devices.

In an interesting move, Netflix has been amassing a decent collection of indie games which subscribers can play for no additional cost. Following the likes of OXENFREE, Moonlighter, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge and Immortality, the latest game set to join the service is the Devolver Digital published intricate environmental strategy game ‘Terra Nil’ – coming next month.

Terra Nil is a simple-looking yet aesthetically pleasing environmental strategy game all about “transforming a barren wasteland into a thriving, balanced ecosystem” in which you will “bring life back to a lifeless world by purifying soil, cleaning oceans, planting trees, and reintroducing wildlife, then leave without a trace.”

Developed by Free Lives (of Broforce, Genital Jousting and GORN fame), Terra Nil looks to be quite different from the team’s previous offerings – though all of the studio’s titles are rather unique in this regard.

Terra Nil is coming to PC and Netflix on the 28th of March, and as with all Netflix games will be available at no additional cost for subscribers. Modern smartphones are much more powerful than they are given credit for and so it is exciting to see more console-quality games coming to the platform.

We've been hearing for a few months now that Netflix is planning on cracking down on ‘password sharing', putting an end to users sharing accounts between separate households. Many already cancelled their subscriptions due to this, but Netflix hasn't actually banned password sharing just yet. That should be changing pretty soon though, the company has now revealed.

As part of its most recent earnings call, Netflix executives explained to investors that the company plans to put an end to multi-household account sharing by the end of Q1, which ends on the 31st of March. Once the rollout begins, Netflix will start tracking login locations and will force account owners to pay an additional charge for extra users on the account.

Users classed as ‘borrowers' on a Netflix account will also have the opportunity to transfer to their own account and keep all their watch history, watch list, likes and dislikes in place. Netflix does expect to see a number of cancellations due to this change.

Regional pricing for all territories has not yet been revealed, but previous limited-area tests set the price of additional users on a Netflix account at $2.99 USD, on top of the price of your usual subscription package.

In an interesting move, Netflix has been amassing a decent collection of indie games which subscribers can play for no additional cost. Following the likes of OXENFREE, Moonlighter and Immortality, the latest game to join the service is the hit arcade-styled side-scroller TMNT Shredder’s Revenge.

Available right now, TMNT Shredder’s Revenge is an authentic throwback side-scrolling beat 'em up which pays homage to the turtles’ legacy while also adding to it. As with other Netflix games, you are able to directly download it onto your iOS or Android devices, meaning the experience should be no different to playing on a dedicated console.

Of course, mobile devices are primarily screens these days, and so the game does offer full touch screen support. That said, if you did want a more tactile experience, you can always add a Bluetooth/USB controller and play to your heart’s content.

It seems Netflix is getting quite serious with its gaming offerings. In the months since its inception, the service has seen more than 40 titles added, including the likes of Into the Breach, Kentucky Route Zero, Twelve Minutes and more. A couple upcoming games have also been announced, including Valiant Hearts: Coming Home from Ubisoft and Vikings: Valhalla from Tilting Point.

Netflix has been building up its gaming business this year, with plenty of studio acquisitions to produce new interactive content for Netflix. Now, Netflix seems to be aiming even higher, as the company has reportedly begun highering for a ‘AAA PC game'.

The new job listings are for the new Netflix Games studio in Los Angeles, with a team led by former Overwatch producer, Chacko Sonny. The listings themselves call for a project director, a lead engineer and a live service analyst. With all of this information combined, Netflix might be looking to make its own live service shooter.

The project is described as a “Triple-A PC game”, indicating that Netflix might be interested in publishing on multiple platforms, and not just limiting access to Netflix subscribers.

It's not hard to imagine where the inspiration here is coming from. Fortnite has been used many times over the years for cross-media collaborations to great success. Netflix might be looking to build something similar for its own streamed content.

KitGuru Says: We don't have a lot of official information right now and building something like this can take years, so we'll have to wait and see how things turn out. For now, Netflix is hiring and starting to lay the groundwork, but it is possible that a triple A game project could be scrapped if costs add up too much. After all, we did see Google pull out of making games mere months after launching its Stadia platform.

Following years of leaks and rumours, a film based on the classic video game franchise BioShock was announced to be in development at Netflix. Being directed by Francis Lawrence of I Am Legend and Hunger Games fame, it has now been revealed that the game’s original creator – Ken Levine – is involved in the film.

In an interview conducted by Collider, Lawrence (in discussing the film’s content rating) claimed that “There's always discussions about rating and tone. I don't want to get into it too much now because it's pretty early on in the process, but I certainly have not felt stifled in any way, or sent in any directions with Netflix. I mean, basically me and Cameron [MacConomy] who works with me, and Michael are getting to do what we want to do, which is great.”

Lawrence also revealed that Ken Levine himself is involved in the project to some capacity, with him saying “A lot of it is staying really true to the game itself, and we're talking to Take-Two [Interactive] and Ken Levine”. That being said, with the way it is worded, it is possible that Levine’s involvement does not extend beyond the occasional consulting.

The BioShock games offer unique aesthetics, interesting worlds, and stories which go beyond the surface, and as such a Netflix film based on them could end up being huge. We will have to wait and see just how faithful it is to the games.

Back in June, Netflix, EA and BioWare announced that a Dragon Age animated series will be coming to Netflix. Now, that series has a release date, and it is very close.

Dragon Age: Absolution, an animated series based on BioWare's fan-favourite fantasy RPG series, will be released on Netflix on the 9th of December, just a few days after The Game Awards take place, which is worth noting as there is also a good chance we get an update on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, the next major game in the series. With that in mind, December could be a very big month for Dragon Age fans.

Absolution is set in Tevinter, an area that gamers will get to explore more in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, previously known as Dragon Age 4.

The animated series has been produced in “close collaboration” with BioWare, so expect themes from the games to carry over to the series. The first season will span just six episodes and plans for future seasons have not yet been announced.

Microsoft has wanted to get a Gears of War movie off the ground for a long time and now following on from the Halo TV series, we'll finally be getting one. Netflix has teamed up with Xbox and The Coalition to develop a live-action Gears of War film, in addition to an animated series.

Yesterday on the 16th anniversary of the first Gears game, Netflix announced plans for a live-action adaptation. The live-action feature film will be followed up by an adult animated series, and there is the potential for future Gears projects too.

The timing here is pretty good, as The Coalition is also said to currently be developing the next Gears of War game. Assuming the film is still a couple of years away, it could end up arriving in the same year as Gears 6. Alternatively, the animated show could bolster Gears sales too, as we saw with Cyberpunk 2077 and its Netflix anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

That's all the information we have for now, but we can guess that Dave Bautista will be heavily campaigning for the role of Marcus Fenix. Bautista has been trying to insert himself into a Gears of War film for years and even caught the attention of The Coalition during Gears 5's run. At one point, The Coalition released a Bautista skin for Marcus Fenix.

KitGuru Says: While typically I prefer live-action video game adaptations in TV series form, Gears seems like the sort of franchise that would work well in a trilogy of movies. Hopefully Netflix leaves the door open for that, but for now, only the one film has been announced.

Sonic the Hedgehog has had many TV shows over the years, ranging greatly in tone, scope and quality. Though it has been a while since the last Sonic show, the Blue Blur is returning to the medium, with the Sonic Prime Netflix show announced to be coming in December.

Back in early 2021, it was announced that Netflix was working on a new Sonic the Hedgehog TV show called Sonic Prime. Little was known at the time, but concept art did suggest that the show would involve some form of dimension hopping.

Now, the studio has released a much more comprehensive trailer, showcasing new character designs, details of the show’s plot, and more, including the show’s release date and cast list.

Launching on Netflix on the 15th of December 2022, Sonic Prime features:

  • Deven Mack as Sonic
  • Brian Drummond as Eggman
  • Ashleigh Ball as Tails
  • Shannon Chan-Kent as Amy Rose
  • Adam Nurada as Knuckles
  • Ian Hanlin as Shadow & Big the Cat
  • Kazumi Evans as Rouge the Bat

Fans of the series will note that this represents a whole new cast of voice actors, but with one familiar face – Brian Drummond. Though he has been cast as Eggman in Sonic Prime, Drummond originally voiced Sonic the Hedgehog himself during the Adventure Era of the franchise.

Sonic is now being voiced by three different people concurrently, with Roger Craig Smith playing Sonic in the games, Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic in the films, and now Deven Mack as Sonic in Prime.

Henry Cavill impressed many fans with his performance as Geralt of Rivia in the first seasons of The Witcher. Unfortunately, with Cavill now returning to his role as Superman in the DC movies, he is stepping away from The Witcher, and a replacement has already been chosen.

Since The Witcher's third season has already been filmed, Cavill will appear as Geralt once again in Season 3. From season 4 onwards, Cavill will no longer be in the show, instead, Liam Hemsworth will take on the role.

In his announcement, Cavill said: “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”

Netflix's new Geralt, Liam Hemsworth, also had some words to share: “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure”.

KitGuru Says: Given that Geralt is the main character, replacing his actor partway through the show will be quite jarring.

Netflix has been building up its own games business for a year now. The company has acquired and started up new game studios, and brought a selection of titles to its streaming service. In the future, Netflix may venture further with a cloud gaming offering, taking lessons from Google's issues with getting Stadia off the ground.

This week at TechCrunch Disrupt, Netflix VP of Gaming, Mike Verdu, spoke on the subject of cloud gaming and growing Netflix's gaming content offerings. According to Verdu, cloud gaming should be treated as a “value add” and not as a “console replacement”, with the hope that over time, it becomes a natural part of how people play games on a day-to-day basis.

Verdu has taken note of Google's struggles with Stadia, saying that while the service may have been successful on the technical side, it had big issues with its business model. With that in mind, we can expect that any Netflix cloud gaming offering would not ask you to buy full-priced games. Instead, we would see a continuation of Netflix's subscription model.

It is worth noting though that Netflix has begun having some business model issues of its own. A drought in ‘must see' content and consistent subscription price rises pushed away a million subscribers earlier this year. Acquiring games for a content library is expensive, and such ventures could drive up subscription prices further. This in turn can slow growth and lead to subscriber loss.

KitGuru Says: Do you think a Netflix cloud gaming option would be successful?

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in the best position it has ever been and a large part of the recent wave of positivity around the game came as a direct result of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The Studio Trigger anime series became a critical hit and a fan favourite when it debuted in September, but unfortunately, there are no plans for season 2 just yet.

CD Projekt Red Japan's Satoru Honma was recently asked about a second season, to which he replied that there are “no plans” to continue the story at this point: “I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios and create more anime works”, he said in an interview with Famitsu (translated via Google). “However, to avoid misunderstanding, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work”.

Honma added that a season 2 does not exist in any form and isn't being secretly worked on in the background.

Without getting into specific spoilers, if you have watched Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, then you will know it is a self-contained story, leaving little wiggle room for a continuation with returning characters. However, the anime was so well received, and Night City is so primed for additional stories, that we could perhaps get a new set of characters in another season or a differently named Cyberpunk-based anime at some point in the future – for now though, nothing has been planned out.

KitGuru Says: The last few months have been great for anime fans. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a huge hit, Bleach has come back after a lengthy hiatus, Chainsaw Man is finally hitting TV screens and returning shows like Mob Psycho 100 and My Hero Academia just began new seasons. Hopefully, at some point, we do get a new Cyberpunk anime, but in the meantime, there's a lot of other good stuff going around.

Oxenfree, the supernatural mystery horror adventure indie title saw a great deal of success following its launch back in 2016. The game’s sequel, originally planned for release back in 2021, was later delayed to some time this year. With just a few months left in 2022 however, Night School Studios has now officially delayed Oxenfree II: Lost Signals to 2023 – though for a seemingly good reason.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Night School Studio account said “We owe it to our amazing community to make OXENFREE II: Lost Signals the best game it can possibly be. Seeing your fan art, reading your excited comments, and connecting with you fuels our ambition to make this our best game yet. To make OXENFREE II truly special and add more localizations, we're moving our release window to 2023.”

The team concluded by saying “Thank you for your patience, support, and understanding. We can't wait to share the game with you. Stay tuned!”

As mentioned, Oxenfree II was originally planned for release back in 2021. In September of that year however, it was announced that streaming giant Netflix would be acquiring Night School Studios.

With the service’s international audience, it makes sense that the publisher would want as many people to experience Oxenfree II as possible, hence the delay to add further localisations. Oxenfree I is available in 31 languages on Netflix right now and so if you have not played the original, now is the time to do so.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the delay? Is it for a good reason? Is the game being published by Netflix an issue for you? Let us know down below.

These days it seems as though any and all successful video game IPs will eventually be adapted into a different medium. The latest game to be getting such a treatment is Capcom’s Onimusha franchise, with Netflix now announcing that the series will be getting an anime adaptation.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the official Netflix Anime account said “It's your first look at ONIMUSHA, an anime based on CAPCOM's legendary game. Created by Takashi Miike and Shinya Sugai from Sublimation, with Musashi Miyamoto modeled after Toshiro Mifune.”

Alongside this, the streaming giant released a few key images from the anime, giving us a look at the show’s art style. As can be seen, the anime seems to be using 3D models to emulate traditional 2D animation. This technique has become more and more common over the years, however early reactions to the art style seem to be somewhat negative.

Of course, it is far too early to judge the quality based on a few screenshots, and for fans of the Onimusha franchise, seeing it being revived in any format is a boon for a series which has not seen a new entry since 2006. Hopefully this is the start of an Onimusha revival.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the images shared? Are you excited for the anime? Does using a 3D art style matter to you? Let us know down below.
