Advanced Micro Devices on Monday announced that starting today it would provide free video games not only with high-end and performance-mainstream graphics cards, but also with entry-level models. In addition to that, AMD will also give its customers a choice and will offer them titles from independent makers in addition to AA and AAA games from leading developers.

Depending on the Radeon graphics card, gamers are now eligible to receive up to three AAA/AA games with high-end Radeon R9 graphics boards, two games with mainstream Radeon R9 or R7 offerings and one game with an entry-level Radeon R7 graphics boards based on GCN architecture. Instead of one high-end title, users can get a pack of games from independent developers.

The indie pack includes the following titles:

  • “The Banner Saga”, developed by Stoic Studio and published by Versus Evil
  • “Dyad”, developed and published by ][, (Right Square Bracket Left Square Bracket)
  • “Guacamelee!”, developed and published by Drinkbox Studios
  • “Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack”, developed and published by Drinkbox Studios

In addition, AMD has added Square Enix’s upcoming title, “Murdered: Soul Suspect” to the Never Settle Forever bundle, which will be available in the Radeon Gold and Silver Rewards. Gamers can secure an early code for the game that may be redeemed when the title launches in June 2014.

KitGuru Says: Free games are always good and are always welcome. It is nice to see that AMD not only adds quality games to its graphics boards, but also offers a choice and even provides titles from independent makers who are pretty hard to find even in digital stores.

In the coming weeks, we will be speaking with some senior folks from both AMD and nVidia about the benefits of running major campaigns for game giveaways. One thing is for sure, no matter whether you bought a graphic card or not, it would have been hard to miss ‘Never Settle' and ‘Never Settle Reloaded'. KitGuru grabs its joystick and prepares for a new wave of excitement.

In preparation for its whole ‘We now touch every game, everywhere, because they all have to speak with the console guys' kick off, AMD has just deployed the 3rd in its successful line of game-packaging promos.

The premise is simple enough: The more you buy of a product, the cheaper it gets, and the game developers need to find new ways to offset the huge costs associated with creating next-gen gaming action.

AMD has money, the developers and publishers want it, so a benefit arrives with the consumer (you) in the form of bundled games.

In store, at launch, these titles are often what is referred to as ‘Triple-A'.   In other words, they are games that will be near the top of the sales charts in most countries. Buy them in your local shop on the day they come out and you could be handing over something like £40 (€45 or $50).

AMD does a deal for a TON of game codes and then bundles them with Radeon HD graphic cards, through their board partners like Sapphire, Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, VTX3D and do on.

With Never Settle (NS) and the follow up campaign Never Settle Reloaded (NSR), there was a little confusion about who got which game bundle with which card, but the Never Settle Forever (NSF) campaign that Aria is pushing has a neat little Bronze, Silver and Gold graphic to make it all much clearer:-

Cool new games and you can choose which ones and - to an extent - how many you get. What's not to like?

.
KitGuru says: Buying a new card for £100-400 is going to make you happy. Actually having a fistful of new games to play on it will make you tingling all over. Whatever the specifics of the ‘win' for AMD, there's little doubt that these campaigns make buying a graphic card more fun/useful.

If you ever read/saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you will be familiar with the special golden tickets that super-choco-genius Willy Wonka hides in the wrappers of special sweets. The marketing gurus down at Asus have followed a similar principal. KitGuru gets sticky fingers in the process of investigating.

The Asus HD7790 card is a very affordable way to get up and running with DX11 gaming – leaving you the option for CrossFire and more frames per second in the future.

To make its card even more attractive, Asus has worked on a special AMD promotion which means you will be sent a special golden USB key after you register your card.

As part of the AMD: Never Settle promotion, you will get 2 FREE games – for example Bioshock: Infinite and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Even better, you will also be entered into a prize draw to win an Asus ARES II graphics card – which is £1,000 worth of extreme pixel punisher.

SO, basically, everyone who registers their Asus HD7790 in time, will get a Golden USB – which could be your ticket to serious fun.

The appointment of Roy Taylor, former nVidia VP for global graphics sales, was reported on KitGuru first. At the time, we could see the significance of AMD CSO John Byrne's team selection – but the question would remain, “How long would it take for Roy to begin impacting AMD's business”. Along with a helpful boost from Never Settle (parts 1 and 2), it seems the effect is being felt earlier than expected.

On 29th December, KitGuru reported that the first version of the AMD Never Settle games bundle (which centred on Far Cry 3 and Sleeping Dogs), was the most significant promotion of the quarter leading into Xmas, but that it had arrived too late to impact nVidia too much in 2012.

We've subsequently had this confirmed by AMD insiders.

We had heard that, on the run into Xmas, distributors like Enta were holding up to 80% nVidia product in certain price categories. Given that us consumers buy what's on a shop's shelves – and the shop can only order what its distributors have in their warehouse – that shows you just how strong a strangle hold nVidia had on the market. Some stores were wall-to-wall green, with the GTX 660, Ti and 670 leading the charge.

We also said that the effect of Never Settle and would most certainly be felt in Q1.

And we were right.

Alongside the launch of the 7870 Tahiti LE parts, like the VTX3D Black Edition (first reviewed by KitGuru Labs back in November), the continuing high-end dominance of the Sapphire 7970 Toxic Edition with 6GB of memory has meant a bit of a stall for GeForce.

Both nVidia and AMD do graphics the same way. A chip is designed by the GPU team, then manufactured by a plant owned by someone like TSMC and finally bought by the AIBs (Add In Board partners) to make the graphics cards we purchase in shops.

All of the AMD AIBs we've spoken to recently have reported “It's just like the good old days” with Roy Tailor back in charge. It seems he's injected some enthusiasm into a tired market – and that promises to be more fun for everyone.

Press included.

If memory serves, Roy loves going toe-to-toe with the opposition and, no doubt, there will be a reaction from the nVidia PR & Marketing teams, being directed by Fiona Faulkner from the nVidia bunker.

With so many launches coming up in 2013, it will be interesting to see what kind of dent AMD can make in the traditionally well-oiled nVidia marketing machine.

One advantage for Roy is that the majority of nVidia's focus, globally, is clearly on achieving a stake in the much larger mobile markets – be that handset or tablet. Good time for a bust up in the GPU markets then.

Servo-assisted gauntlets have been thrown down - it's time to get in the ring

.

KitGuru says: We promise to stay ringside and bring you each and every bloody blow, as it's landed, in real time. We believe that nVidia will be on ‘roids by the time the 700 series is ready to get in the ring and you can expect Roy in a Mech Warrior style suit for the Radeon 8000 launches. Ding Ding.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) are hoping that a new campaign will help drive sales of their graphics cards in Q4. They are bundling a series of high quality AAA games with their video cards.

The ‘Never Settle' bundle campaign targets a wish list of AAA games such as Dirt ShowDown, Media of Honor Warfighter, FarCry 3, Sleeping Dogs, Dishonored and the upcoming Tomb Raider.

If you buy a HD7700 or HD7800 then AMD will give you Farcry 3 and 20% off Medal Of Honor Warfighter. If you buy two of them, then you get Hitman Absolution free as well.

The ‘Ultimate Never Settle' bundle is based around the flagship HD7900 series of cards – You get Farcry 3, Hitman Absolution and Sleeping Dogs free, and 20% off Medal of Honor Warfighter.

The value of the games in the bundle varies between $60 and $170 depending on what you buy.

This move comes at a good time for AMD, who reported a quarterly loss and said it would make 1,700 people redundant – almost 15 percent of their global workforce.

Robert Hallock, AMD product marketing manager said in a press briefing “This is the single most important game bundle of the year for Radeon graphics. This is the biggest graphics card bundle we have ever offered, and this is probably the biggest graphics card bundle that has ever been offered in the graphics industry.”

AMD are also releasing a new 12.11 driver which gives a 15 percent performance boost in a handful of games, such as Battlefield 3, Sleeping Dogs and Dirt Showdown. This driver will be released shortly after Windows 8.

Kitguru says: Free games – people always like that.
