We already know through court document leaks that Microsoft is already well into planning its next generation Xbox console. Surprisingly, Microsoft is now talking about its next-gen plans openly.

We should be at least four years away from the next console, according to documents leaked through the court system during the FTC vs Microsoft trial over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. However, Xbox President, Sarah Bond, did publicly tease the next console during the recent Official Xbox Podcast, stating that it will bring the “largest technical leap” ever.

In an interview with The Verge, Phil Spencer also mentioned new hardware, even adding the idea of creating ‘unique hardware', which is believed to allude to a potential Xbox handheld, something that has been rumoured many times over the years.

Xbox is supposed to make a new hardware announcement this year, but that could be anything from a new Elite controller, to a streaming device, to a true handheld, to a refreshed Xbox Series X/S console. We'll no doubt learn more this summer when major announcements start coming through.

KitGuru Says: 2028 is still quite a long way off but Microsoft seems to be groundwork early for next-gen consoles. Primarily, I think this is a rebuttal to the idea that Microsoft is planning to wind down hardware creation and fully commit to being a multiplatform publisher.

For the past two generations of Xbox and PlayStation consoles, Sony and Microsoft have both gone with AMD for their custom hardware. Microsoft is already laying the groundwork for its next console, as we know from files revealed as part of the FTC v Microsoft trial over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Now, it is claimed that Intel is looming, looking to grab Microsoft's business for its next console.

According to Moore's Law is Dead, which has a hit and miss track record with console hardware leaks, Intel is looking to compete for Microsoft's business and wants to supply its own chips for next-gen Xbox consoles. Looking back at a little bit of hiring history reveals that there could be more to this thread to follow.

As noted by TweakTown, Intel hired John Sell back in 2019. Sell had previously spent many years working at Microsoft, acting as the chief architect behind the Xbox One, Xbox One X and the most recent Xbox Series X/S systems.

AMD has had a bit of a lead in integrated graphics over the past decade. However, Intel been working on its own Xe Graphics architecture for several years now and the latest Intel processors do have a bit more graphics horsepower, allowing for Intel Core Ultra chips to be used in gaming systems like the MSI Claw handheld.

Microsoft will no doubt have meetings with AMD, as well as Nvidia, before making any final decisions on hardware for its next console. It is also worth noting that Microsoft's Xbox hardware plans could also be in flux at the moment, as the company is looking to grow its game software sales by bringing more titles to platforms like PlayStation. This could signal a bigger shift towards third-party development and away from first-party hardware with exclusive software.

KitGuru Says: With the Xbox One/PS4 and Xbox Series X/PS5, Microsoft and Sony both opted to use very similar custom hardware for their systems. It would be interesting to see them both diverge next generation, at which point comparisons between the two systems would become more relevant than ever.

Starfield isn't the only game Bethesda is working on right now. In recent weeks, we've seen an update to mod support for Skyrim, new content for Fallout 76 and we've been anticipating a ‘next-gen' graphics update for Fallout 4 on Xbox Series X/S and PS5. While Fallout 4's upgrade was announced in October, with plans to roll out before the end of 2023, Bethesda has opted to take a bit more time with it.

The Fallout 4 next-gen update for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 will now be arriving in early 2024, the studio announced with the following tweet:

If you already own Fallout 4 on Xbox or PlayStation, then this will be a free upgrade. Xbox owners don't really need to wait either, as the Xbox Series X/S can already run the game at 60FPS using Microsoft's Frame Rate Boost option in the game's compatibility settings menu.

We still don't know the exact scope of this update but I would go in expecting a boost to both frame rate and resolution, perhaps even hitting 4K/60FPS. Anything beyond that, such as the inclusion of new textures or reworked assets would be a bonus.

It has been a long road but Cyberpunk 2077 is finally complete. The introduction of Patch 2.0, as well as the Phantom Liberty expansion, has marked the end of development. Just like The Witcher 3, there will be one final Cyberpunk 2077 release, packaging together all the content available.

CD Projekt Red confirmed plans for Cyberpunk 2077: Complete Edition to investors back in October, but noted that an exact name has not yet been decided on. Now, we know that it will be called Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition and it will be available both physically and digitally, packaging together the updated 2.0 version of the base game, along with the Phantom Liberty expansion. This will be the first time that the game has been made available on a physical disc for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles.

There are some differences between the physical versions. The Xbox physical version is the only one to actually contain all of the content on disc. The PlayStation physical version includes the base game on disc and a download for Phantom Liberty. As DigitalFoundry's John Linneman points out, this is likely due to the fact that Sony would have required the game to be recompiled and resubmitted for certification, which costs development time and ultimately, more money. By putting the already certified version of Cyberpunk 2.0 on the disc and including a download code for Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt Red is able to release the Ultimate Edition quicker and avoid additional expenses.

This has been an issue for other Complete Edition releases on PS5 as well, including the physical version of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, which also included a download code for the DLC rather than putting it on disc, likely in an effort to avoid having to go through the certification process again. It would seem that Microsoft does not have the same requirement for the Xbox platform.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition arrives on the 5th of December for all platforms.

KitGuru Says: While the prologue is still a bit shorter than I'd like, Cyberpunk 2077 now fully lives up to its promise throughout the entire rest of the game and the Phantom Liberty expansion is nothing short of excellent and I would go as far as to label it an essential pick-up for anyone playing the game for the first time, or returning to it.

Gamescom officially took place last week and Nintendo was indeed in attendance to sell merch and show games to attendees. As it turns out, Nintendo may have had some very interesting meetings behind the scenes of the event, as word has begun to spread that the company is now showing its next-gen console to partners.

According to Jez Corden, who also attended Gamescom this year, Nintendo apparently began talking about its next console with select press/developers in private meetings. This matches up with recent rumours that claimed that some studios have started to receive the first development kits.

Recently, some people have been circulating the name ‘Nintendo Focus' online, but that name has not been corroborated or confirmed by any trusted source yet.

The Nintendo Switch first launched in March 2017 and has gone on to become one of the best-selling consoles of all time. Fans have been asking for a more powerful model for years but Nintendo instead opted to stick to its current technology and quietly work away on the next full console release instead. Nintendo's next console is expected to launch in 2024.

Rumours of a Switch Pro circulated for years with nothing ever coming to fruition. At this point, Nintendo is focused on a true successor console instead and according to sources, development kits have begun landing at various studios.

According to VCG's sources, a number of studios have now received development kits for Nintendo's next-gen console. With development kits arriving now, developers will have a little over a year to get their first projects ready for the new console, which should officially launch in the second half of 2024.

Unfortunately, nobody has leaked any specifications or feature details, so at this time, we do not know if this will be a new dedicated home console, or a hybrid system like the Switch. Typically, Nintendo tries a new gimmick feature each generation, with the Switch generation being the idea that you could seamlessly change between a home console or a handheld. The idea proved to be more popular than Nintendo expected, so we may see this idea stick around for the long haul.

A next-gen Switch would likely continue to be powered by Nvidia hardware, which opens the door for exciting features, such as the first DLSS-supported console games. DLSS uses AI upscaling techniques to greatly enhance performance for PC games. Such a feature would help many developers bring their more graphically intensive games to Nintendo's platform. Another area Nintendo will have to improve in is storage. The Switch currently offers a maximum of 32GB internal storage, making SD Card storage an essential requirement for most Switch gamers. With its next-gen system, we would like to see Nintendo offer 128GB, 256GB or 512GB storage options.

KitGuru Says: With Nintendo's next system coming in 2024, there will be an interesting year ahead. At this point, I'd expect to see Metroid Prime 4 as a launch title for Nintendo's next system, rather than launching as a Switch exclusive as previously envisioned.

With the launch of The Witcher 3's next-gen update in late 2022, CD Projekt Red added new content inspired by the Netflix live-action series. This content has been available on most consoles and PCs since then, but Nintendo Switch users have been missing out. With this week's update, the Switch version of the game gets some welcome upgrades.

The fact that The Witcher 3 runs on the Switch at all is pretty amazing. It is certainly the ‘worst' looking version of the game, but it is perfectly playable in full, on a handheld device. With Patch 4.04, Switch owners now get access to new side quests inspired by Netflix's The Witcher series. Beyond that, the Switch version now has the Full Combat Rebalance mod implemented, and cross-progression has been fixed, allowing users to more easily switch between PC or another console and the Switch version without losing progress.

The rest of the patch primarily focuses on platform-specific bug fixes. A number of quests have now been fixed across all platforms. Additionally, oin the PC side, an issue where GOG achievements don't unlock for the Complete Edition of the game has been fixed, and players will now properly be able to set an FPS cap while using DLSS 3 Frame Generation.

Patch 4.04 for The Witcher 3 is now available on all platforms. You can read the full patch notes, HERE.

The video games industry is rather secretive, especially Nintendo. That said, we can often glean some of these redacted details thanks to job listings. Such is the case with a new posting by the console manufacturer – with Nintendo officially discussing their “next generation” platform.

As discovered by Reddit user ‘Untangled-fork’ a new job listing posted by Nintendo looking for a Game Technologies R&D Engineer/Scientist made reference to future Nintendo hardware (one of the few times so far for the console manufacturer to have officially done so).

In discussing the responsibilities of the position, Nintendo stated “The goal will be to aim for and go beyond state-of-the-art solutions in these fields, targeting current and next generation Nintendo platforms. It will be necessary to collaborate with game developers to bring new technologies to the market.”

Furthermore, in going to specifics the listing highlighted ‘cross-platform development’ as one of the core responsibilities. It has long been assumed that Nintendo are hard at work on their successor to the Nintendo Switch, and so this fact is not surprising. It is however encouraging to see that cross-platform compatibility seems to be one of the major sticking points for this next-generation device.

Nintendo has previously made reference to the cross-generational future of its Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, but this new posting hopefully indicates that compatibility across the board is in the works. We will have to wait and see.

Just recently, we heard that Sony is developing a PS5 Pro console, indicating that the PlayStation 6 should arrive sometime between 2027 and 2028. Now, regulatory filings have confirmed that Microsoft is also working on its next generation of Xbox hardware and services.

The FTC is currently suing Microsoft to block the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, a case that Microsoft is planning to fight in court. As part of the discovery process, involved parties have to hand over requested documents and information as all sides build their cases. We've already seen Microsoft request a trove of files from Sony, including exclusivity and licensing contracts dating back to 2019. Now, the FTC is requesting particular files from Microsoft, including documents related to its “next generation gaming ecosystem”.

The codename has been redacted in the public version of the file, but what we can see tells us enough. The file states that the FTC is requesting “documents related to [redacted], the code name for Microsoft's next-generation gaming ecosystem”. According to the document, this is part of Microsoft's “forward-looking strategy for its console, subscription, and cloud gaming businesses”.

We are unlikely to get any further details, as these files are scrutinised and sensitive information is redacted before the documents are made public.

As great as the visual upgrade has been for The Witcher 3 following the release of its next-gen version, the update didn't arrive without problems. There have been some lingering graphics and performance issues in the game for a while now but today, a sizable new patch began rolling out on all platforms.

Patch 4.02 has now released for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The update is already available on PC and should begin rolling out on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles today. The update improves CPU core utilisation while using DX12 on PC, and on console, the game's performance mode should run better.

Here are the PC-specific and console-specific patch notes:

PC-SPECIFIC

  • Improved CPU core utilization in the DX 12 version.
  • Restored horizon-based ambient occlusion. Players who had previously turned Ambient Occlusion off will need to do so again. You can find it in Options → Video → Graphics.
  • Fixed an issue where the “My Rewards” section was not localized in REDlauncher.
  • Fixed an issue with a flickering landscape in Toussaint that occurred when NVIDIA HairWorks was disabled.
  • Fixed an issue related to particle optimization which could result in temporary stuttering.

CONSOLE-SPECIFIC

  • Improved Performance Mode on next-gen consoles.
  • Fixed an issue where characters could become slightly blurry during dialogues and cutscenes on PlayStation 5.
  • Fixed an issue related to memory usage in Ray Tracing Mode which could result in crashes on Xbox Series X.
  • Whatsoever a Man Soweth… – The game will no longer crash if Geralt runs away from Shani after starting the conversation on next-gen consoles.
  • Fixed an issue where quicksaves couldn't be loaded when using cross progression on Xbox One.
  • Added two missing “Top notch swords!” on previous-gen consoles.
  • Fixed an issue with overwriting manual saves where in some circumstances the oldest gamesave was deleted on PlayStation 5.
  • Addressed performance issues in Beauclair and Novigrad that occurred after loading a gamesave.

Other improvements with this patch include several quest bug fixes, improved water appearance by adding refraction to SSR and ray-traced reflections, a brick texture issue has now been squashed and a motion blur slider is now available in the options menu. Additionally, localisation issues in Arabic and Korean languages have been fixed and the Traditional Chinese font has been updated.

That's everything the patch notes covered at least, CD Projekt Red does say that the patch contains other minor fixes that weren't listed.

It has been roughly six weeks since The Witcher 3's next-gen update landed for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. The update brought huge graphical upgrades, particularly on PC, where ray-tracing effects can be cranked up even further. Now, we have our first patch, bringing a number of stability and performance improvements.

While The Witcher 3's next-gen update is graphically impressive and adds some new content to the game, including a pretty lengthy new questline, it also brought along some new pain points. The new DX12 version doesn't run as well as the older DX11 version, so it felt like there was some room for improvement. Some of those improvements have now arrived with Patch 4.01, which began rolling out this week.

Here are some of the key patch notes:

PC:

  • Fixed an issue where the Screen Space Reflections setting wasn't working on PC despite being turned on. Players who had previously set their SSR setting to high may notice a performance impact.
  • Added a new performance mode for ray-traced global illumination, which can be toggled by players with compatible hardware. It improves frame rate by prioritizing performance over range and precision.

Console:

  • Fixed an issue where consoles could create a higher amount of saves than their set limit, resulting in various issues with saving the game or user settings being reset.
  • Improved Screen Space Reflections quality on next-gen consoles.
  • Optimized ray-traced global illumination on next-gen consoles to improve the performance of Ray Tracing Mode.

A number of fixes have also been applied to a few in-game quests, patching out crashes and progression-blocking bugs in quests like Battle Preparations, Family Matters, King's Gambit and others. Minor glitches with other quests and cutscenes have also been patched out.

The Witcher 3's next-gen update has arrived, bringing a fresh graphical upgrade and some new content to CD Projekt Red's highly-rated RPG. Unfortunately, the transition to the latest version hasn't been entirely smooth, as PC players are facing some issues.

A number of users have begun reporting performance issues for the PC version of the game across forums and on sites like Reddit. There have also been a number of crashing issues.

In my own experience with the game, I have run into an issue where I can't load a previous save due to having used mods – attempting to load that particular save results in a crash. I have also faced crashes on a fresh save due to fiddling with graphics settings. You may experience a crash when switching RT on and off.

CD Projekt Red is aware of the issues that users are reporting and the team is actively looking into bug fixes and other changes it can make to smooth out the experience for all users. In the meantime, you can switch back to the older DX11 version of the game through the launcher.

The Witcher 3's next-gen update will be rolling out later this week and just as promised, CD Projekt Red has now revealed the full patch notes. We already knew about some of the marquee features arriving with this update, including ray-traced graphics and new performance options for consoles. Now, we know much more, including the list of mods worked into the game.

For the next-gen update, CD Projekt Red worked with mod makers to bake a selection of mods into the new PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5 version of the game. These mods include The Witcher 3 HD Reworked project, perhaps the most popular graphics mod for The Witcher 3, created by HalkHogan. Additionally, HD Monsters Reworked by Denroth, Immersive Real-time Cutscenes by teiji25, Nitpicker's Patch by chuckcash and World Map Fixes by Terg500 are also included in the game by default with the new update.

As far as brand new content goes, the list includes:

  • Added a new side quest, In The Eternal Fire's Shadow, in Velen. Rewards are inspired by Neftlix's The Witcher series.
  • Added an alternative appearance for Dandelion inspired by Netflix's The Witcher series. You can enable it in Options → Gameplay.
  • Added an alternative Nilfgaardian Armor set inspired by Netflix's The Witcher series. You can enable it in Options → Gameplay.
  • Added Chinese and Korean voice-over. Availability on consoles varies by region.
  • Various improvements and changes to Russian voice-over, including fixes for accelerated / slowed lines in the vast majority of scenes.

And here is a breakdown of the new PC-specific and console-specific features:

PC:

  • Added “ULTRA+” graphical settings on PC, which significantly increases the visual fidelity of the game. The graphical settings available on ULTRA+ affect:

• Number of background characters

• Shadow quality

• Grass density

• Texture quality

• Foliage visibility range

• Terrain quality

• Water quality

• Detail level

  • Added DLSS 3 support. Available only on compatible hardware.

Next-Gen Consoles:

  • Improved the overall quality of graphics on next-gen consoles. Including enhanced textures, improved fidelity, shadow quality, greater draw distances and crowd density.
  • Ray Tracing Mode — provides ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion with dynamic resolution scaling targeting 30 FPS for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
  • Performance Mode — ensures smoother gameplay targeting 60 FPS with dynamic resolution scaling for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
  • The Xbox Series S version has no ray-tracing features. Quality Mode provides increased resolution and better image fidelity targeting 30 FPS, whereas Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and prioritizes smoother gameplay over visual quality.
  • Implemented the use of adaptive triggers and haptic feedback on PS5 DualSense controllers.
  • Added Activity Cards for PS5.

Aside from all of this, CD Projekt Red has also worked on a number of Quality of Life changes, and the company has overhauled its cross-save functionality, so you can now automatically have your saves uploaded and transferred between platforms.

There are even more notes to take a look at in the full patch notes, but as CD Projekt Red says, the notes only include the highlights. There were likely many more fixes and tweaks that haven't been specifically listed here.

Today CD Projekt Red gave us our first look at the next-gen update for The Witcher 3 and shared many other details of the patch. For starters, the game is getting ray-traced global illumination and ray-traced ambient occlusion. It will also support upscaling techniques like DLSS and FSR 2.0.

On PS5 and Xbox Series X, the game will now have a true performance mode, offering 60FPS. The quality mode setting will run at 30FPS but with ray-tracing switched on. PS5 players will further benefit from DualSense haptic feedback. In terms of other graphical upgrades, the developers have reworked the game's foliage, improved textures and LOD.

Truth be told, ray-tracing and some of the texture improvements didn't really stick out to me during the livestream, although I did think Geralt's armour looked sharper. The stream didn't include comparison screens, and obviously video compression means some of the finer details in the image are lost anyway, so we won't be able to make a good judgement on the upgrade here until we can see the update for ourselves.

CD Projekt Red has also spent some time fixing some lingering bugs, adding in new close-up camera options and making a few other quality of life changes – for instance, you'll now be able to pause cutscenes at long last, and adjust subtitle size.

The Witcher 3's next-gen update arrives as a free upgrade for all owners of the game on Xbox, PlayStation and PC on the 14th of December.

KitGuru Says: Did any of you watch the stream? Were you impressed with what was shared so far?

This month, CD Projekt Red finally gave us a date for The Witcher 3's long-awaited ‘next gen' update. The update not only includes enhanced graphics for PC and consoles, but also new in-game content. We've yet to see what the game looks like with this new update, but that will finally change tomorrow.

The Witcher 3 is seven years old as of this year. The new update will include graphical and performance enhancements for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5, in addition to ray-tracing. The update also features new content themed on Netflix's Witcher series, and a few community-made mods are being integrated into the game too, but once again, specific details have not yet been revealed.

That should all change tomorrow, as CD Projekt Red will be going live at 6PM CET to stream our first look at the new version of The Witcher 3. The update will roll out for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC on the 14th of December.

CD Projekt Red initially tasked Saber Interactive with developing this new version of the game following the company's excellent work on the Nintendo Switch port. The update was unfortunately pushed out of 2021 while CDPR focused on fixing Cyberpunk 2077 and then earlier this year, CD Projekt Red took over development of the update with plans to get it out to gamers by the end of this year.

On next-gen consoles, you'll have to download the new ‘next-gen' version of the game to benefit from the upgrades. You will get this version for free if you already own a PS4 or Xbox One copy of The Witcher 3. PC players will get the update automatically without the need to install a new version of the game.

While initially CD Projekt Red had planned to release next-gen updates for The Witcher 3 in 2021, it was later pushed to 2022. The enhanced version of The Witcher 3 was being developed by Saber Interactive, but CD Projekt Red took over development earlier this year, planning for a Q4 release. Now, we finally have a proper release date.

The Witcher 3 is seven years old as of this year. The new update will include graphical and performance enhancements for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5, in addition to ray-tracing. CD Projekt Red has also previously teased “a few surprises” so there will be a little content added to the game too. That will include new content themed on Netflix's Witcher series, and a few community-made mods are being integrated into the game too.

CD Projekt Red initially tasked Saber Interactive with developing this new version of the game following the company's excellent work on the Nintendo Switch port. However, earlier this year, CD Projekt Red chose to break off its relationship with the studio and decided to finish working on the update itself.

Now after months of additional work, the update is finally ready to release. The update will arrive on the 14th of December for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. On next-gen consoles, you'll have to download the new ‘next-gen' version of the game. However, PC players will get the update automatically without the need to install a new version of the game.

While The Outer Worlds does have a 60FPS mode on Xbox Series X via Microsoft's own FPS Boost feature, Obsidian never released a dedicated ‘next-gen' version of the game for Xbox Series X/S and PS5. That is finally changing with the new ‘Spacer's Choice' Edition of the game.

A couple of weeks ago, The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition was revealed by ratings boards, showing that the new version of the game would release for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles, as well as PC. Now, the box art for all three new versions of the game has also leaked (via Reddit):

With this version of the game only heading to modern platforms, it is possible that Obsidian has snuck in a few additional graphical improvements. The company has not yet announced the dedicated ‘next gen' version of the game for Sony and Microsoft's latest consoles. However, the original version is playable on both systems via backwards compatibility with Xbox One and PS4.

In Xbox's case, the need for a true ‘next gen' upgrade was lessened thanks to FPS Boost, a feature that allows certain backwards compatible titles to run at twice the original frame rate on Xbox Series X. This paved the way for 60FPS gameplay on console already. Unfortunately, the PS5 does not have an equivalent feature, so even on PS5, The Outer Worlds currently runs at 30FPS.

This new edition of the game will likely also give you the base game and two story DLCs all in one package. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

While The Outer Worlds does have a 60FPS mode on Xbox Series X via Microsoft's own FPS Boost feature, Obsidian never released a dedicated ‘next-gen' version of the game for Xbox Series X/S and PS5. That is finally changing, as a new PS5 and Xbox version of the game has now been rated.

As reported by VGC, the Taiwanese Ratings Board recently listed (and then removed) a new version of the game known as ‘The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition'. In the platforms section shows this new version heading to current-gen consoles and PC.

Presumably, this new edition of the game will back together the base game and its two DLCs, which offer players two new quest lines to explore. The new version may also have multiple visual modes, allowing users to choose between lower resolution and higher frame rate, or a higher resolution and 30FPS gameplay.

Obsidian has not yet announced this new re-release for The Outer Worlds, but given the ratings board listing, we'd expect some official news very soon.

Outer Wilds is one of the more unique indie titles released in the past few years, having won multiple awards, while being nominated for dozens more. Those who wish to replay the game once more – or for the first time – can do so in 4K60fps thanks to the official release of the current-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ports.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Mobius Digital – the studio behind Outer Wilds – said “Outer Wilds is now available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S! These ports use next-gen tech to allow spacefaring at 4k 60fps. Though these consoles are new and shiny, we promise the ship is still held together with good ol’ duct tape and tree sap.”

Offering more details on their website, the team confirmed that the upgrade is free no matter whether you are on Xbox or PlayStation. Furthermore, those who acquired Outer Wilds through Sony’s PlayStation Plus service will still be able to upgrade – despite some other PS5 ports not offering a similar solution.

Outer Wilds’ art style allows it to flourish at any resolution (as can be seen with the upcoming Switch version) though being able to play the game at 4K and 60fps is a welcome addition, especially as you are able to transfer your save file over to the new version of the game, meaning there is no reason not to upgrade.

Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red stopped its partnership with Saber Interactive, bringing The Witcher 3's impending ‘next gen' update in-house. A small team has been working on finishing up the update ever since, which is on track to release before the end of the year.

Unfortunately, the update was not ready in time for the game's 7-year anniversary back in May. However, The Witcher 3's big graphics update will be arriving before the end of the year for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles, as well as PC.

Officially, all we know is that this update will bring some form of ray-tracing to the graphics options menu, and we'll likely get a much more solid 60FPS mode for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles. CD Projekt Red has promised “a few surprises” too, so expect a small amount of new DLC content.

Speaking during a recent earnings call, CD Projekt CEO, Adam Kiciński, confirmed again that the update is ‘on track' for this year. Previously, we were told that the update would release in Q4, so expect more news from October onward. CD Projekt Red also has some big things going on in the world of Cyberpunk, with a big 1.6 patch on the way soon, new DLC to tie in with the upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series, and the first Cyberpunk 2077 expansion on the way in 2023.

KitGuru Says: If the update is still on track for Q4, then we should hear more about it very soon. We should also see some new updates on the game's SteamDB page in the lead-up to release, so we'll be keeping an eye out for more.

PUBG: Battlegrounds remains one of the most popular battle royale shooters currently, especially in the wake of its free-to-play release. That being said, until now, the game offered no upgrades for PS5 and Series X|S users. Launching tomorrow, the ‘next-gen’ update brings many improvements across the board – though much less so on PS5.

From tomorrow, the 12th of July, PUBG players on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will benefit from a number of graphical and performance improvements. On Xbox Series X, the game will now run at a 4K resolution while offering both FXAA (fast approximate anti-aliasing) and TAA (temporal anti-aliasing). The series S offers similar settings except for the resolution, which has been reduced to 1440p – though is still much improved over the previous offering of just 1080p.

The PlayStation 5 also sees many improvements, though due to it still being a native PS4 app with no bespoke PS5 version, the resolution is only bumped to a modest 1440p while adding TAA and FXAA, putting it in line with the Series S version despite the PS5 being more powerful.

Initial reactions to the announcement of the PS5 version seems to be disappointment, especially as this update is coming a year and a half after the launch of the systems (which already added 60fps to PUBG at the time). Of course, 1440p is still a respectable resolution, but it is understandable if PS5 owners are left disappointed by this update. Hopefully the game gets a proper and bespoke PS5 version at some point in the future.

Released in mid-2021, Biomutant is an action RPG developed by Experiment 101 and published by THQ Nordic. The game suffered from a lengthy development and so despite it releasing after the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, it only offered previous-gen versions. Now, finally, more than one year later, Biomutant is getting a proper ‘next-gen' release.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Biomutant page said “Life… finds a way to current gen. Biomutant is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 6, 2022. Upgrade your last gen version for free, keep your save files and enjoy native 4K, up to 60 FPS and more!”

Offering additional details on their website, the Biomutant team revealed that 3 graphics options will be available:

  • Quality: 30 fps @ 4k resolution (1440p on Xbox Series S)
  • Quality Unleashed: 40+ fps, averaging 50-60 fps, up to 4k resolution (1440p on Xbox Series S)
  • Performance: 60 fps locked @ 1440p (1080p on Xbox Series S)

The PlayStation 5 version will arrive with a few additional features in the form of haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, motion control, and speaker sound thanks to the system's DualSense controller. Additionally, Biomutant supports Activity Cards on PS5 in order to “offer a variety of different ways to jump straight back into Biomutant.”

Regardless of what system you own it on, the best part of the announcement is the fact that the upgrade will be entirely free to current owners. If you do not yet own the game, the new version for PS5 and Series X|S can be purchased for £34.99. Biomutant releasing without any next-gen features at the time greatly impacted its visuals and performance on consoles which is why it is exciting to see the game finally getting a bespoke next-gen release.

What Remains of Edith Finch is an award-winning narrative focused ‘walking simulator’ which took many by surprise upon its initial release in 2017. Since then, the game has been ported to all manner of systems, from the Switch to even iOS. Thanks to the Taiwanese ratings board, we now know that PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are on the way.

As discovered by TwistedVoxel, the Taiwanese games rating board recently added a listing for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of What Remains of Edith Finch. We know very little about this release otherwise, though considering its inclusion on the ratings board, it is safe to assume that these will be bespoke next-gen versions, meaning that the newer systems’ hardware can be more fully utilised.

Of course, What Remains of Edith Finch is not the most demanding game, and benefits little from a boost to 60fps and beyond, but even so, the game’s art direction and scenery composition will certainly benefit from a boost in resolution.

It will be interesting to see whether this upgraded version is offered for free to current owners of the game. We will have to wait and see for the official announcement.

This week during the Capcom Showcase, the publisher officially launched next-gen versions of Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake, bringing ray-tracing and enhanced graphical effects to PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Unfortunately for PC gamers, the update also means that the game's system requirements have been adjusted.

While previously the Nvidia GTX 760 or Radeon R7 260X were the minimum required GPUs to run these games, the new update means that players will now need at least a GTX 960 or Radeon RX 460. Capcom has encouraged players with low-spec systems to disable automatic updates for the game if their PC does not meet the new minimum requirements.

Another significant change is that the newly updated versions of these games now require DirectX 12, whereas DX11 was supported previously. Dropping support for DX11, as well as the increased system requirements, has caused some backlash on Steam, with many voicing their concerns in the Steam Community thread.

With all of that in mind, what should have been a nice graphical update has become somewhat messy on the PC side, with a few issues cropping up for previous owners of the game. Capcom may need to consider making the pre-update versions of these games widely available through Steam.

KitGuru Says: I haven't had the chance to check out the new Resident Evil updates yet, but they seem to be causing a stir. What do you think of the recent changes made to these games? Should Capcom have released new ‘enhanced' versions of all three games rather than updating the original versions for all users?

Resident Evil had a true resurgence over the last console generation, with Capcom delivering Resident Evil 7, and remakes for Resident Evil 2 and 3, all of which were well received by fans. Back in March, Capcom announced plans to bring a graphical upgrade to all three games on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles, as well as PC. This week, the big ray-tracing update has officially arrived.

Today, Capcom released the next-gen versions of Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil 7. The updates will be rolling out for free to all digital owners of the games on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. On the Xbox side, the games will use Xbox Smart Delivery, making the upgrade process very seamless. On PS5, you will have to seek out the PS5-specific versions of each game and download them individually. On Steam, the game should just automatically begin downloaded the update if you have it installed.

The next-gen update includes several new enhancements. On the Xbox Series X and PS5 these games now support 4K resolution and 120Hz modes. The update also adds 3D audio support, and ray-traced Global Illumination. DLSS is not supported unfortunately, but AMD's FSR 1.0 tech is in place, and will hopefully be upgraded to FSR 2.0 later down the line.

The update is available now, but this wasn't the only Resident Evil related announcement to come out of the Capcom showcase. The company also gave us another sneak peek at Resident Evil 4 Remake, and we have new details on Resident Evil Village DLC.

While initially CD Projekt Red had planned to release next-gen updates for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 in 2021, both were later pushed to 2022. The enhanced version of The Witcher 3 was being developed by Saber Interactive, but CD Projekt Red has since taken over development, which unfortunately means the update has been delayed again. Now, the update is on track for Q4 2022.

The Witcher 3 officially turns 7 years old today. While we didn't get anything major for the occasion, CD Projekt Red has given us an update on The Witcher 3's upcoming ‘next gen' update for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. The update will include graphical enhancements like ray-tracing and “a few surprises”.

CD Projekt Red initially tasked Saber Interactive with developing this new version of the game following the company's excellent work on the Nintendo Switch port. However, earlier this year, CD Projekt Red chose to break off its relationship with the studio and decided to finish working on the update itself.

After spending some time figuring out how much work still needed to be done on the update, a new launch time table has been given. Now the update is scheduled for “Q4 2022”, which is a pretty significant delay. We'll have to keep our fingers crossed that the update isn't pushed into 2023.

At this point, the Nintendo Switch will go down in history as one of the most popular consoles ever made, having recently surpassed the Wii in total sales. Due to the console's success, Nintendo has extended the Switch's lifecycle, and now, ensuring a smooth transition over to the next home console is “a major concern” for the company.

Nintendo hasn't said much about its future console plans, outside of repeatedly denying the existence of a Switch Pro console. However, the company is starting to look ahead to its next major home console. Following the company's earnings call this week, Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawa, took questions from investors, during which the subject of Nintendo's next-gen console came up.

As translated by VGC, Furukawa explained that the Switch still has “a large variety of games scheduled to be released”, which is something Nintendo wasn't too worried about with previous home console generations. He adds that because the Switch “had such a smooth launch”, ensuring a smooth transition to the next home console “is a major concern”.

Here is the full quote: “We have already announced a portion of our software roadmap releasing up to next spring. Unlike the past, we continue to have a large variety of games scheduled to be released, even beyond five years of release. This is because the Nintendo Switch has had such a smooth launch, allowing us to focus all of our development resources on a single platform.”

“However, the question of whether we will be able to just as smoothly transition from the Nintendo Switch to the next generation of hardware is a major concern for us.”

Based on Nintendo's experience with the Wii, Wii U and Nintendo DS, the company will want to make it easier for customers to transition from the Switch to the next console and will “provide services that also use Nintendo accounts” to help forge “long-term relationships” with customers.

Nintendo has not yet announced plans for its next-gen console, but rumours hint at a direct follow-up to the Switch, rather than a transition away towards a new gimmick. Nintendo has typically reinvented its platform with each major home console, but the Switch has such a popular combination of features that Nintendo may just stick with it and make necessary improvements where required.

KitGuru Says: When do you think we'll see Nintendo announce its next major console? At the earliest, I could see new hardware being announced in the second half of 2023, but a 2024 date seems more realistic to me.

Earlier this week, CD Projekt Red announced that The Witcher 3's next-gen update was delayed, leading to a lot of doom and gloom headlines stating the update was delayed “indefinitely”. This came up during CD Projekt's earnings call last night, with the company downplaying the severity of the delay.

During the investors call, CD Projekt VP of business development, Michał Nowakowski, addressed the headlines saying: “I've been looking at the headlines that popped up here and there over the internet, and I've seen one that really drew my attention, which is, ‘Witcher 3 next-gen delayed indefinitely,' which sounds like the game is in some sort of development hell”.

Fortunately, it sounds like the delay isn't quite that serious: “I want to state this is not the fact. There's been a lot of insinuations that we're going to launch, like, June next year or something like that. That's completely not the case”, he added.

The next-gen update for The Witcher 3 is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC, promising a graphical overhaul, ray-tracing and other improvements. Initially, the update was being developed by Saber Interactive, which also handled The Witcher 3's Nintendo Switch port. However, due to unspecified reasons, CD Projekt Red chose to bring development in-house and take Saber off the project. The update was being planned for Q2 and should be close to finished already, so CD Projekt is “evaluating” the state of the update and what still needs to be done before giving a new release date. Nowakowski finished off by saying that “nobody's saying the game is delayed with some monumental time gap ahead”.

As PCGamer points out, CD Projekt's CEO, Adam Kicinski also added that finishing up the update will only require a small team, so it won't have an impact on other projects, like the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion and the next Witcher game.

Last night, CD Projekt Red held its quarterly investors call, unveiling new milestones, changes within the company, and future plans at the studio. Alongside sales milestone updates on Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt has also reached new milestones for The Witcher franchise, which has now accrued over 65 million sales.

Back in 2020, The Witcher 3 was approaching the 30 million copies sold milestone. Now in 2022, the game has surpassed 40 million copies sold. Meanwhile, The Witcher series as a whole has surpassed 65 million copies sold.

We likely would have seen another boost in Witcher 3 sales in the first half of this year, but unfortunately, the game's next-gen and PC graphics update was delayed again. The update was previously being developed by Saber Interactive, but CD Projekt Red has since brought development in-house for unspecified reasons.

With work on Cyberpunk 2077 now largely finished, CD Projekt Red is shifting resources around to other projects. Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a big expansion, but a lot of resources are also now going towards work on the next Witcher game, which is entering development using Unreal Engine 5.

KitGuru Says: The Witcher series has been hugely successful and in a few years time, we'll hopefully be seeing a worthy follow-up.

The enhanced version of The Witcher 3 was being developed by Saber Interactive, but CD Projekt Red has since taken over development, which unfortunately means the update has been delayed again.

In a tweet this evening, CD Projekt Red stated: “We have decided to have our in-house development team conduct the remaining work on the next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. We are currently evaluating the scope of work to be done and thus have to postpone Q2 release until further notice. We’ll update you as soon as we can. Thank you for understanding.”

The next-gen update for The Witcher 3 is supposed to include a visual overhaul, ray-tracing features and some small pieces of additional content to bring players back in. The update will be free for everyone who already owns The Witcher 3 on PC, Xbox or PlayStation.

While CD Projekt Red did not confirm this, there is a rumour that CD Projekt Red did not want to work with Saber Interactive's Russian office any further, resulting in the decision to bring development back in-house. Previously, Saber Interactive did an excellent job porting The Witcher 3 to the Nintendo Switch.
