While Nintendo is keen to keep the 3DS on life support for the next year or two, the company will be killing off a member of the 3DS family. This week, Nintendo confirmed that it has discontinued ‘The New 3DS' in Japan as well as Europe. Since the handheld was only ever part of special edition bundles in the US, this move effectively kills off the smaller 3DS worldwide.

The news comes just a couple of months after Nintendo launched ‘The New 2DS XL', indicating that Nintendo only plans to push its XL size handhelds for the rest of the 3DS's lifespan.

The New 3DS XL will still be available, so if you don't mind the larger size, you can still get that. However, it might make more sense to save the money and pick up a ‘New 2DS XL', which comes in a clamshell design and simply drops the 3D function while keeping everything else the same.

If you are planning on jumping into the 3DS generation, then there are still a couple of game releases to look forward to, including Metroid: Samus Returns as well as Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon.

KitGuru Says: I've had a 3DS for a few years now and while I have played some great games on it, I don't see myself going back now that the Switch is out. Especially since I use my Switch mainly as a handheld and not a docked/home console. If you were thinking about getting the 3DS, then you may want to be quick, unless you can get along with the larger XL size.

Nintendo has debuted a new bug bounty program for its 3DS portable console, with rewards up to £16,000 for anyone who can find an exploit in its platform. This comes as somewhat of a surprise, as many expected the upcoming 2017 release of the Switch to see Nintendo focus its efforts on that convertible console, rather than the dedicated portable system.

Bug bounties are nothing new, but they are effective. Offering a monetary payout for anyone who can discover a bug with a system is a good way to have them let you know when they find something, rather than selling it on the black market, or exploiting it themselves for financial gain. Nintendo is no doubt hoping that will be the case with the 3DS moving forward.

3ds222

The bug bounty system is being hosted by San Francisco-based, HackerOne, which hosts these sorts of bounty programs as a matter of course. It offers bounties between $100 and $20,000 (£15,700) for everything from modifying safe data, to game application dumping and dissemination of inappropriate content. As Ars points out, Nintendo even suggests that the ARM11 Kernel could be susceptible to exploitation, as well as certain hardware vulnerabilities.

Exploits have been found on Nintendo 3DS hardware in the past too. We've seen homebrew software run and game piracy through add-in cards, but one of the more impressive was when someone managed to get Windows 95 working on one earlier this year.

Nintendo have upgraded the 3DS handheld to include a screen almost twice as big as the current model. Analysts feel that the screen size increase is to help Nintendo counter the rising sales from smartphones and tablets.

The Nintendo 3DS LL (XL in some markets) will go on sale in Japan and Europe on July 28th. America will get the new handheld from August 19th. There is no pricing information yet for Europe but it will go on sale at $199.99 in the U.S.

The 3DS screens are currently 3.53 inches and 3.02 inches and the new XL/LL version will sport 4.88 and 4.18 inch panels, according to reports.

Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata said in a video on the companies website ‘There were demands for a bigger screen, and so we are ready to respond with a size-variation model, You can enjoy powerful 3D imagery.”

The new console will be larger but battery life has apparently been improved slightly.

Nintendo are facing rivalry from the smartphone and tablet market, particularly Apple's iOS platform.

Nintendo have sold 17 million 3DS consoles worldwide to this point.

Kitguru says: Nintendo face a tough year ahead. This may help drive more sales.

We reported a few days ago that Nintendo are cutting the price of their 3DS portable unit. Sales have not met expectations and the reduction in price is sure to drive more sales. The latest news is that Nintendo employees will also have to face reductions in salary.

Nintendo have been facing a tough economic climate as sales of their 3DS stutter, and Bloomberg Japan (english) are claiming that the console price reduction means they are losing money with every 3DS sold.

Satora Iwata - £600,000 salary cut as company lower costs

Not only will some empl0yees have to deal with salary reductions, but Kotaku report that Satoru Iwata, the company president will be accepting the same punishment as staff, with his salary being reduced from £1.2 million to £600,000 a year. Other chiefs will accept a 30 percent reduction to reduce overall costs.

He said “For cuts in fixed salaries, I'm taking a fifty percent cut, other representative directors are taking a 30 percent cut, and other execs are taking a 20 percent cut.”

Kitguru says: Hopefully they can ride out the hard times and come back bouncing, but there are clearly problems in Mario land.

Nintendo have not received the level of sales they had hoped with their latest 3DS console and according to reports they are cutting the price by a whopping 40 percent.

Nintendo have had a tough year, losing over $320 million in the last quarter. Some analysts are claiming that the problem is down to the growing tablet market, and people spending more money on ‘disposable' games costing only a few pounds each, or less.

Nintendo are lowering the price from Y25,000 to Y15,000 to help create more of a sales push in the coming months. This price drop will translate to $170, from $249 in the States. Europe won't quite see the 40 percent drop, with retailers receiving a 33 percent drop.

Nintendo have said that their revenue has dropped by 50 percent in the first quarter of 2011, when compared against the same fiscal period the year before.

With the price drop of the 3DS, they hope to sell 16 million of the portable devices this year, even if they are making significantly less on each sale. Nintendo have also focused on the lowest possible price point which has helped drive sales with a younger audience, so with this price cut, they are hoping that a larger audience will have access to the hardware.

Kitguru says: With the price drop, are you interested?

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has been very open when he spoke at a conference for investors and analysts. It seems if he could turn back time he would use outside sources to help market the Nintendo Wii. He also said that things will change.

Nintendo have reported a second straight fall in annual profit, so it is hard to ignore the problem. Iwata was very outspoken in his conference discussion and said “I now regret that we didn't tie up with someone outside the company to market the Wii. If we had done that, the fate of the Wii might have been different.”

It looks as if they have learned from their mistakes however, and he quickly followed up with “Now I am aware that we should not rely too much on ourselves. You will see what I mean by this when we market the 3DS and the Wii in the future.”

Recent reports have also indicated that the 3DS is off to a rather weak start, with sales not reaching the goals the company wanted. We would assume the higher than normal asking price has had some bearing on this. They sold 3.61 million portable machines at launch, short of the forecast of 4 million. The Wii has sold 86 million units since the 2006 release, although there has been a steady decline in sales in recent years as they face ‘high definition' competition from Sony and Microsoft.

Nintendo's net profit for the year to March has dropped 66.1 percent to 77.6 billion yen ($1.16 billion). The company however have said they expect sales to surge more than 40 percent over the coming 12 months.'

Nintendo 3DS mania is hitting the UK this week and supermarket chain store Asda have announced that they are opening tonight at midnight to get Nintendo fans get their hands on the new portable game console.

We find the statement quite amusing however as many of the stores are open 24 hours a day, but its a nice stunt to get parents into the stores for a purchase. A specific number of stores will open beyond the normal trading hours but ASDA have said that customers will have to use the store locator to find the local supermarket and then check if it will be open (if its not a 24 hour store).

The official launch date for the 3DS is the 25th March, and ASDA are clearly banking on the fact that parents will have been worn down by the kids over the last month.

The console will be on sale for £197 in store and if you buy the console in the first 3 days you can get a list of games for £15.

games on offer for £15:
Super Street Fighter
Pilot Wings
Lego Star Wars
Nintendogs Golden Retriever
Nintendogs Bulldog
Nintendo Poodle
Super Monkey Ball
PES
Rayman
Splinter Cell
Ridge Racer
Sims 3

The Nintendo 3DS pre order sales figures are breaking all records on Amazon UK, outperforming the previous console leader, the Sony Playstation 3.

Chris Poad, the director of Video games at Amazon.co.uk said “It’s unusual for a handheld console to attract this amount of excitement in the run up to launch,” and that “Such high levels of interest are normally reserved for play-at-home hardware.”

This will certainly be silencing the critics who claim that public interest in the upcoming Nintendo console is muted, thanks in part to the high price. Amazon have cut the original pre order price by a further £10 to £187.

The United Kingdom is expected to receive 185,000 units for the Nintendo 3DS launch and apparently over 100,000 have already been preordered to date.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has confirmed that Mario will be hitting the upcoming 3DS console in glorious 3D. While everyone knew this would happen, this is the first official statement that Nintendo have released, at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco yesterday.

The good news is that the Nintendo team who were responsible for Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are handling all the development duties, but as yet there is no release date being given. This will be a big seller for Nintendo and will assuredly shift millions of consoles also in the run up to end of year sales.

The title will offer ‘traditional Mario gameplay' but will feature glorious 3D graphics, bringing ‘true depth and distance' into the gameplay mechanics.

its a me, 3D a Mario.

Nintendo are planning a series of ‘3D Classics', older titles which will get a 2011 remake. Current DSIWare titles are also going to be made available, as well as an internet browser and a shortform video download facility so users can get music videos and movie trailers.

KitGuru says: Shigeru Miyamoto's creation has also been tied into the Nintendo name and is still their flagship character. The news of a full 3D version of an upcoming game has already got the gaming masses foaming at the mouth in excitement.

Nintendo have announced that the 3DS will be on sale from March 27th and the price will be set at $249.99.

This long awaited gadget will play video games in 3D without the need for glasses, and it can also take 3D photographs and display them on screen. Nifty.

At a press conference in New York, Nintendo also announced that more than 30 games are going to be made available for 3DS owners between the launch date and early June.

Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo Of America President said “Nintendo 3DS is a category of one – the experience simply doesn’t exist anywhere else, ou have to see Nintendo 3DS to believe it. And it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.” One of the better hype building statements we think.

The new Nintendo 3DS will have two screen, much like the current model. The bottom screen is a touch screen and the top panel is able to display 3D images, as well as 2D versions. They are offering a ‘depth slider' so people can adjust the level of 3D they can see.

The 3DS also will ship with three cameras onboard, one camera pointing at the player and two others pointing outwards. These are used for the 3D photographs.

Additionally it will ship with a motion sensor and gyro sensor to measure the motion and tilt of the device. It also has a rather cool looking Circle Pad to provide a 360 degree directional control motion system for games.

Two colours are offered at launch, Cosmo Black or Aqua Blue and the 3DS will be sold with preinstalled games and applications. Games available on release from Nintendo will be “Pilotwings Resort,” “Nintendogs + Cats,”and “Steel Diver,” a side-scrolling submarine adventure “that gives the illusion that the player is peering into an aquarium.”

KitGuru says: 3D without glasses, we all want that.

Pictures claiming to be the upcoming 3DS handheld console from Nintendo have been circulating on the internet today.

The images, which first appeared on a gaming forum, show the 3DS in a black shell. The latest images show the start, home and select buttons level with the plastic under the handhelds display.

Video game site 3DS Buzz was the first to report on the leak which was apparently sourced from a worker in the factory. A video was also posted on Youtube, but has since been removed. Other videos have appeared though.

The 3DS is due to go on sale in Japan on February 26th and won't require 3D glasses to get a 3D image effect. The price is said to be around $300 in Japan. It should be available in Europe and the US a month later, but pricing and dates are not yet confirmed.

One of the most sought after gadgets, the Nintendo 3DS will be hitting retail in February in Japan and March in Europe/US. Nintendo have pushed their original release launch for April, forward. Proving they are ahead of schedule right now and ready to get major sales for this hot handheld product.

While many had hoped the date might be pushed forward for the lucrative Christmas sales, this doesn't seem to be a realistic time frame for the Kyoto based company.

Pricing information so far points to a 25,000 yen cost, which translates to $300/£190 – a reasonable figure for a product with 3D image support. As always, UK consumers may well be asked to fork out more than £190, as is often the case when these devices are imported.

Nintendo 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS has two panels, the top panel shows the 3d images which gives the player a good impression of a virtual reality experience. These games don't require special glasses and they also obviously don't need 3D TV sets either. I can't imagine many people will want to walk around wearing glasses to play their handheld console, so this is a good move – if the quality is high.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has said that the quality of the device can't be easily shown in TV or magazine adverts – it has to be seen in the flesh, so we hope that many stores across the globe will be holding ‘hands on' demos. “We are not taking the success of the 3DS for granted,” Iwata told reporters at Makuhari Messe hall in this Tokyo suburb. “The value of the 3-D experience can be understood only by getting people to try it out.”

People who have already had the chance to try Metal Gear Solid from Konami on the 3DS say that it is a fantastic looking title which really does manage to convey depth of field and spacial effects.

Contrary to popular rumour on the net, Nintendo will not be using nVidia's Tegra in their upcoming state of the art 3DS handheld.

KitGuru spoke to an industry insider yesterday who confirmed that the recent news on sites such as IGN and Eurogamer were in fact true – Nintendo are instead opting for a currently unknown Japanese partner for the chip design.

This is sure to be a tough blow for nVidia who have been very outspolen about their low power Tegra SoC platform and the impact it could have on their future growth. CEO Jen Hsun Huang has said that “more than 400 million” Tegra based devices would ship in 2010 and lead to “$10 billion market growth”.

We are not sure how much this Nintendo deal will impact those figures, but you can rest assured, no matter how you take it, Jen Hsun won't be happy.

KitGuru says: More on the mysterious  ‘Japanese partner' when we have it.
