Microsoft said today that Nokia are going to be releasing new Windows OS phones within the next week. They hope that the new products from Nokia will help boost their sales in Europe and other parts of the world.

Andy Lees, the Windows Phone division chief said that Nokia phones are a very big deal for Microsoft as they mount a challenge against Android, iOS and Blackberry handsets.

He told the All Things Digital AsiaD technology conference “We are very excited about them (Nokia) being in the market. They have a lot of resources throughout the world and they will be a major accelerant to us.”

Lees added that Nokia have seen the Windows roadmap for the new operating system and have “decided to bet their whole company on Windows Phone based on that”. It certainly is a daring move for Nokia, especially as Microsoft have yet to prove themselves within the smartphone market.

He also added that Google are ‘very nervous' at Microsoft entering the market, even though for them it is still early days.

Lees said “We've been working hard on building an architecture that allows us to leapfrog our competitors by using the best components available”

Kitguru says: ‘Leapfrogging their competitors'? They are certainly out for blood.

Nokia were once the outright leaders in the mobile market but in the last few years we have been watching the company weaken, every month. In the last three years their shares have fallen by 49 percent and they have dropped 30 places across 12 months in a global brand ranking system.

Millward Brown Optimor have shown Nokia dropping to number 43 position in a global brand ranking system, from number 13 just over a year ago. Their shares have dropped in value by 49 percent and it doesn't look to be changing anytime soon.

Matthew Lynn, a reporter for Bloomberg said “True, it still has more than one-third of global mobile-phone sales. But it's stranded in the middle of the market. Korean manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics are leading the main consumer market. Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry dominate the upscale smartphone industry. Recognizing the scale of its challenges, Nokia hired Stephen Elop, the Canadian head of Microsoft's business unit, to turn the company around. Everyone will wish him well… But if the guy knows so much about phones, he's kept it a secret. Microsoft has never made any progress in that industry.”

Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo - forcing a smile

Lynn while damning of Nokia has a point, Nokia have been struggling to handle the ever changing market place and while they have many nice phones in their portfolio,. the more dramatic designed units such as the iPhone are gaining marketshare all the time. With Google Android making such an impressive initial impact in the market we can only assume that Nokia will need to reinvent their phone range and come up with radical new designs to stop the decline.

Lynn isn't so sure, he says “The cruel truth is that for all its residual market share, Nokia looks like a has-been. The company misread the way the mobile-phone industry was merging with computing and social networking. And it's probably too late to turn that around.”

KitGuru says: With a market worth billions every year, Nokia look to be failing on hard times. 2011 will be a very important year in this market. We still believe that Google Android powered phones will dominate.

Nokia have been one of the leaders in the cell phone industry for a very long time and they have had a pretty fiery relationship with Apple, it seems new legal action is taken weekly for patents.

What we found slightly amusing however was a recent blog they wrote explaining to their users how they could hold their Nokia Phones. It seems this is popular as there are currently around 1,300 tweets on the posting.

Let us give you a quick overview of some of the key points.

Thumb and finger
Elegant in appearance, this method requires you to grip the phone by its edges, with the thumb on one vertical edge and one to four fingers on the opposite edge.

For larger devices, you might like to place the index finger towards the centre of the top of the device for extra stability.

Nokia end the blog post with “Of course, feel free to ignore all of the above because realistically, you’re free to hold your Nokia device any way you like. And you won’t suffer any signal loss. Cool, huh?”

Kitguru says: Handbags at dawn.
