Samsung is expecting its quarter 3 financial results to show a 60 per cent decline in year-on-year profits, showing a consistent downwards trend for the Korean device maker. Analysts had expected the company to generate operating profits of around £3 billion this quarter but the company was quick to warn that its profits would be closer to £2.4 billion.

During this same quarter last year, Samsung managed to generate £6.2 billion in profit. The new figure also shows a 66 per cent drop in profits from this year's second quarter. Speaking to the BBC, Samsung claimed that smartphone shipments failed to increase dramatically due to intense competition.

Samsung then went on to state that in an effort to combat competition in the mid to low end smartphone market, the company is preparing a new range of devices featuring new build materials and innovative designs.

Samsung could be experiencing brand fatigue, the company's profits rose swiftly between 2012 and 2013 after the hugely successful launch of the Galaxy S3 handset but since then, sales have been trending downwards and the company has failed to release a new ‘game changing' device.

KitGuru Says: Samsung hasn't really done anything different with its Galaxy flagship devices since the S3. What could the company put in to the Galaxy S6 to try and make it stand out? Flexible screens? Beefier hardware? A better battery? Abandon Touch Wiz? Let us know what you guys think.

If you hate cleaning your car as I do, then Nissan's latest prototype video will be right up your street. Designated as a “self cleaning” car, essentially Nissan has sprayed down a Note with a hydrophobic and oleophobic material that – according to the video at least – keeps your car completely clean, no matter what dirt and water you drive through.

These sorts of sprays and materials have been available for some time already and are used in commercial products for wind screens to keep water off, or for workman's tools for making sure they don't rust, but this is the first time a car company has stepped forward and added it to one of their vehicles.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwoGsCAKsxU']

“Washing a car can be a chore – and a costly one at that. In response, Nissan has begun tests on innovative paint technology that repels mud, rain and everyday dirt, meaning drivers may never have to clean their car again,” reads the description of the video, posted up on Nissan Europe's channnel.

In-case you can't watch the video above, it features  a standard (and white) Nissan note, with half of it sprayed down with the new paint, while the other is not. The car is then driven through mud, rain and all sorts of other grubby road conditions, with the end result being one side is dirty and the other is almost pristine.

At the moment, Nissan has said it has no plans to make it a standard product in its line up, but it will consider offering it as an upgrade option.

KitGuru Says: While it seems likely this will only be available on new cars, it would be nice to have a retrofit option for this. It would save so much faffing.

With all the furore surrounding the way that component prices have been dropping recently, space a thought for any resellers or distributors who presently have stock on the Samsung Galaxy Note II. A KitGuru associate was considering one of these, but hit a snag when they went to do a price comparison. KitGuru powers up the LEDs and heads into the dark corners of the channel.

We live in a price competitive world.

Whenever one supplier has a product at £100, we're sure to find a spread of others in the £90 to £110 range.

Google and Amazon both do quite nice business off this fact.

It's not often that some of the most famous stores in the country can be undercut by close to £200 by other famous stores. Not on a product that generally costs less than £500.

While the Samsung Galaxy Note II managed to sell close to 2 million during the month after its launch toward the end of 2012, sales have been very wobbly for some time. Demand has been sporadic in the face of a wave of new launches and the candy-dangling desire being tapped into by the up-coming Note III (scheduled for early September) and new Apple handset.

Anyone retailer holding onto Samsung Galaxy Note II stock right now, will be getting very sweaty palms. As a result, deals are being done and the extent to which people want to have the Note II phones on their shelves cleared by the time the Note III lands, has led to this quite amazing spread of pricing:-

The spread of pricing that we have seen on the Samsung Galaxy Note II is quite incredible.

.

KitGuru says: With prices tumbling down this range of stores by almost £200, bargain hunters will want to check through until the last minute to make sure they have the very best deal in town. That said, if you wait until after the first week of September, you're almost certain to get a deal that will make these prices look positively bloated.

While the ‘bigger is better' philosophy, at least in terms of screen size, has been present in the smartphone industry for a few years now, it has become much more prevalent since the release of the original Samsung Galaxy Note. Since the original Note, we have seen the Note 2 in a number of flavours (including LTE), which have sold pretty well.

It is almost time for Samsung to refresh this range once again with the Galaxy Note 3 which is going to be revealed on the 4th of September.

The success of the Note range came as quite a surprise to many in the industry, with millions of devices being sold. In fact, back at the end of 2012 we reported that the Galaxy Note II had sold over 5 million units in the first 2 months of being on sale!

Galaxy_Note_2

It seems that a number of manufacturers have seen the success that Samsung have achieved with this range of devices and decided to supplement their ranges with a ‘phablet'.  We have recently seen leaked images strewn across the internet of enlarged HTC One and Sony Xperia models, so we expect to see more competition in this particular segment over the next year.

There are a number of rumors flying around regarding the specification of the latest Note. We expect that the screen will be a 1080P model which comes in at around 5.7 inches, so not to draw too many sales from the even larger Galaxy Mega (at 5.8 and 6.3 inches).

KitGuru says: The question on our minds is 5.5″ going to be enough to satisfy all users!

As it rapidly becomes the single most populous country on the planet, India is now plagued by forgers, keen to create their own bank notes. As the country grows, the implication for the economy of having an unchecked community of cheats is very serious indeed. But help is coming. KitGuru examines the issues behind legal tender and how Gandhi continues to look after the nation he helped build.

Looking at almost 3,000 serious cases of forgery from last year, the successful prosecution rate in India was just over 35%. That means that the criminal masterminds who print and distribute their own currency, are able to operate with impunity.

Until now.

Contrary to the image suggested by its name, India's Central Forensic Science Laboratory is actually four centres. The CFSL's director, Mr Singh, has new hope in his battle against the criminal forgers.

While the new machines and software being developed will help detect dodgy notes, they also go one stage further. They incorporate tests to help ascertain which machines were used to make the false notes – and where the raw materials were likely to have been shipped in from.

Battle tested by Interpol, the machines will begin to make an appearance in India, and soon after will help stem the tide of false fiver proliferation.

In the meantime, the Indian mint people (currency, not sweets) have noticed something strange about the patterns printed on their rupees.

Notes that contain a specific portrait of Gandhi, have proven almost impossible to forge properly. Could it be that this holy man is looking after his country's economy, even after death – or is this pure coincidence?

Gandhi: Hard act to follow, hard note to copy

KitGuru says: Given all of India's proven ability to develop systems and software, it will be interesting to see if the forgers can continue to stay one step ahead – or will the national police manage to increase convictions past the 50% mark ?
