For years now, there have been rumours around a Switch Pro, with a newer Nvidia SoC and support for features like DLSS. At this point, a Switch 2 is looking far more likely than a mid-gen refresh, and we finally have confirmation of such a product existing thanks to recent Nvidia leaks.

Recently, Nvidia suffered a cyberattack during which 1TB of confidential data was stolen. Some of these files have begun leaking, including the source code for DLSS. While sifting through the code, dataminers found references to “nvn2” and “NX”. The former is thought to be the Switch graphics API, while the latter is the codename for the Nintendo Switch.

References to new Nvidia chips were also discovered, including the T234/T239 chips, which are Ampere-based SoCs with support for Nvidia's newer features like DLSS.

Interestingly, some of the data from these files is from as far back as 2019, which is when Switch Pro rumours really started picking up. At this point, it is believed that the Switch Pro is cancelled and that work is now being put towards a next-gen Switch console instead.

KitGuru Says: Do you think we'll see a Switch 2 in the next couple of years? Or do you think Nintendo will move away from the handheld/home console hybrid with next-gen hardware?

Over the last week or so there have been several sources claiming that Nintendo would finally reveal the NX console this month and fortunately enough, the information turned out to be accurate, as a preview trailer for the system went live this afternoon. This quick three-minute look at the system gives us a new name for the console, which is now known as the ‘Nintendo Switch'.

This trailer comes after months and months of silence from Nintendo on the subject of NX. It seems that investors have also got a little excited over the reveal, as Nintendo's market share value also shot up once news hit that a reveal would be happening today.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5uik5fgIaI']

The Nintendo Switch basically has all of the features previously leaked. It is a home console, that also doubles as a gaming tablet of sorts with detachable controllers and a docking station for use on a TV instead. Honestly judging by the trailer, the idea actually looks pretty awesome.

The trailer gives us a quick look at some of the games coming to NX, including Zelda, Splatoon, NBA 2K and even The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. The console is launching in March 2017 but aside from that, no further details were given so we are still in the dark when it comes to specifications and pricing.

KitGuru Says: The Nintendo Switch is a pretty good name and it gets the message across nicely, which is a big step up from the Wii U. The trailer video also did a good job of selling me on the idea of a home console doubling as a portable handheld. Have you guys seen the Nintendo Switch reveal? What do you think of it?

Although the Wii u did manage to gain some traction at various points over the past few years, it never garnered the mainstream attention afforded to the PS4 and Xbox One. That's something Nintendo wants to change with its next-generation system, the NX, expected to launch in March 2017.

“One of the things that we have to do better when we launch the NX,” said president of Nintendo America, Reggie Fils-Aime, in a chat with AList, “we have to do a better job communicating the positioning for the product.”

The lack of awareness of the Wii U was a real problem following its launch. The name left casual gamers thinking it was a Wii upgrade, rather than a new system; the lack of games making use of the tablet control made it hard to stand out, and when third party games were dropped, the big launches no longer even mentioned the system in their press releases.

Nintendo-NX

Sorry, until we get a shot of the system, this is the best we can do.

This lead to most people not really being aware of what the Wii U was all about, which was actually quite a decent little system. It's had some great releases over the past few years, but Nintendo wants to come in hard with the NX from the get go.

It will launch with the Zelda game that we've been waiting on for a few years and Nintendo plans to make a number of changes to improve its launch period sales.

“[The NX must] have that continuous beat of great new games that are motivating more and more people to pick up the hardware and more and more people to pick up the software,” Fils-Aime continued. “Those are the critical lessons.”

That will come under Nintendo's new “software planning,” strategy, which will see it focus on having lots of big releases at a regular schedule, so that there's always something to bring in new buyers and keep existing NX gamers around.

KitGuru Says: I really liked the Wii U and had some great times playing Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate and a few others, but it definitely isn't the big winner that it could have been.

Nintendo's next generation console may blend the future with the past, as a number of rumours are now suggesting that it will support cartridges for games. That tie to the past won't mean you're tied to your living room though, as the NX is also said to be a portable console with its very own TV dock.

In a sense, the Nintendo NX sounds much like what the contemporary smartphone is evolving into: a jack of all trades that can be augmented in certain situations. While your smartphone might act as a portable game console, media player and communication device, when you're near a streaming capable TV, it becomes a remote control and hub for all of your media.

That may be what the NX is like. While out and about it could operate as high-powered mobile console, perhaps a little like Nvidia's Shield, and when you connect it up to its TV dock, it becomes a more traditional home console, with all of the grounded benefits that brings. It could even house a secondary processor in the dock, similar to the way the PS4's expansion box is for its VR upgrade.

zeldabreath

Zelda: Breath of the Wild, will be one of the NX launch titles

It doesn't necessarily have to offer additional processing power, but could perhaps take over some of the more mundane tasks to free up that extra power on the main processors.

That might be necessary for the NX to keep pace with the potentially Xbox 1.5 style upgrades we're seeing from both Microsoft and Sony for their respective consoles, as the NX is rumoured to use a Nvidia Tegra processor. While they are certainly powerful for a portable system, they would be unlikely to offer comparable performance to the Xbox One or PS4.

That doesn't mean the NX wouldn't have some advantages though. Being truly portable is something that neither the Xbox One or PS4 can offer; it makes it potentially compatible with augmented games like Pokémon Go, which could prove a huge hit for Nintendo in the future; the use of cartridges could kill off load times completely, and the portable core feature should really differentiate the Nintendo offering from its previous Wii and Wii U consoles.

All of this is considered rumour for now though, so don't take anything as gospel. Eurogamer quotes a number of sources on the matter, but that's hardly enough to claim any of this as fact. We'll have to wait until September to get our first look at the NX, but it's set for its official release at some time in March 2017.

KitGuru says: This has me intrigued. I've enjoyed my time with the Wii U a lot, but a Nintendo that's striking off into new territory and combining its 3DS with a new, more powerful system, certainly has me interested.

Less than four years on from the release of its Wii U console, Nintendo has announced the official release date of its sequel. The Nintendo NX will not be showing up this year, but not far beyond it, with a planned launch of March 2017. In more disappointing news, Nintendo also confirmed it won't be showing off the NX at E3 this year.

Nintendo has been rumoured for some time to have a next-generation system in the works. The Wii U, although modestly successful in terms of software sales and Nintendo made a killing with Amiibo, system sales have just not been there for it; even with a year long lead-in on rivals Microsoft and Sony.

zeldawiiu

With that in mind, for over a year now Nintendo fans have looked to the future, wondering what Nintendo can do with a new-gen system to shake things up. The NX is that system and though it was expected to debut at E3, Nintendo has gone ahead and announced it a little earlier, but said that it won't be detailed until beyond the big show, later this year (as per EG).

Instead at E3, Nintendo will be talking primarily about the next Zelda game, something it's been discussing for years already. We saw a first gameplay demo in late 2014, but it turns out though E3 will feature the game and likely give attendees a chance to play it, Zelda Wii U is not going to launch in 2016. In fact it is expected to launch almost alongside the Nintendo NX.

That would seem rather bizarre, considering it was designed for the current-gen Wii U. However Nintendo has confirmed that a port to the new system has been in development for some time, so in effect the next Zelda game could end up as a launch title for the Nintendo NX.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Launching with a port isn't exactly great news, but at least Zelda will be there from the get go with the NX. It was one of the big titles missing from the early days of the Wii U. Here's hoping Nintendo can win back third party support with this system too. The lack of backing from major publishers was a huge blow for the Wii U. That and people still don't know it exists.

Right now, AMD hardware can be found in the Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U. However, the company could see more than $1.5 billion in revenue over the next few years thanks to “three design wins” from the company's console-focussed chip making business, coinciding with rumours that Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft could all have new console hardware on the horizon, starting at the end of this year.

During its quarterly investor meeting, AMD CEO, Lisa Su, said that three new products in particular are expected to generate $1.5 billion in revenue, with business expected to ramp up in the second half of this year: “In addition to the new design wins, we have our current game console business as well,” Su said. “So when you look at the aggregate of that, we do expect to start ramping that new business in the second half of the year. But we also expect the seasonal uplift of our traditional game console business. So that's adding to what we expect will be a strong year for Semi-Custom overall.”

AMD-chip

Aside from that though, AMD's CEO wouldn't elaborate any further, instead choosing to wait until its customers are ready to reveal details themselves: “I don't believe that we've gone through any detail about what those wins are. So I would prefer to let that come out as our customers are ready to launch.”

In addition to the potential launches of the Nintendo NX and the PS4 NEO at the end of this year, AMD is also looking to compete in the desktop CPU market with its new Zen architecture processors, which should help add to its end of year financials.

KitGuru Says: It looks like 2016 is going to be a busy year for AMD at this rate. We are already expecting new consoles from Sony and Nintendo, but from the sounds of it, we can also expect something slightly more powerful from Microsoft as well.

Update: It turns out that the pictures that appeared online earlier this month of the rumoured Nintendo NX controller, have been confirmed as fakes by the person behind the posting. They even uploaded a video showing the creation of the 3D model used for the images and how they overlayed some of the supposed in-game graphics to great effect.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpkA2MPgmAg']

The only caveat to the whole thing is that there was no explanation about where the more convincing images that appeared yesterday came from, though as EG points out, it seems likely now that those are fakes too.

That may not be entirely true though, as Nintendo's patent still stands. It could still make a controller that look like this – it just seems likely that these images aren't of it.

Original Story: It was only a few days ago that we saw rumoured images of Nintendo's in-development controller for its next-generation console, the codenamed NX and now we might have more. These don't show a game in progress, but do lend more credence to the idea that the controller will have joysticks layered over a touch screen, letting players game through their fingers, with no face buttons to speak of.

Similar to the original patent filing for the controller and the follow up images we saw last week, these images show a controller sized piece of kit, with a pair of joysticks and a large glossy surface – suggesting of a touch interface.

nxcontrol02

Where these new images do offer us some extra details, is in contextual size and cable connectors. In both shots, we see a pair of 3.5mm connector earplugs hooked up to it via a small port on the underside. We can also see its relative size in comparison to the Wii U controller, coming in at about two thirds of the length and a third of the height.

Although just as much rumours as these hardware shots, the Redditor who originally posted them did have some details on it too. They confirmed the 3.5mm audio connector, suggested that there is haptic feedback for on-screen buttons, that the rollers along the top act and feel like a mouse scroll wheel and that only part of the joysticks move.

nxcontrol01

Take this all with a pinch of salt until more confirmation comes in, but don't expect anything official from Nintendo until E3 later this year at the earliest.

Update: Nintendo has released a statement denying these reports. You can find all of that information, HERE.

Original Story: It looks like Nintendo might be ready to move on from the Wii U completely by the end of the year as a new report is claiming that the company has plans to cease production of the console by the end of this year, presumably following on from the announcement and launch of the Nintendo NX, which we are expecting to be revealed near E3.

The report comes from Japanese site, Nikkei, which has often been a fairly decent source of information. According to the outlet, Nintendo is looking to deplete its existing stock and some Wii U accessories may have already had their production runs cut.

nintendo-wii-u-console-650x338

Nintendo has been promising to share more information on the Nintendo NX this year and just last week we got a look at what could end up being the console's new controller. This report also calls into question the future of Nintendo's planned Legend of Zelda game, which was delayed out of 2015 and currently has no release date. It is possible that the Wii U's biggest planned exclusive may also end up appearing on the NX, similarly to how Nintendo handled Twilight Princess on the GameCube/Wii.

KitGuru Says: It is starting to sound like Nintendo is planning to phase out the Wii U with the NX faster than initially anticipated. However, Nintendo is a very secretive and often unconventional company so it can be difficult to know what to expect.

Late last year, we got wind of a couple of patent filings from Nintendo, showing sketches of a new controller, presumably for the upcoming Nintendo NX console. Now, a leaked image appears to show off what the controller looks like in the flesh and much like the sketch, it looks incredibly different to any other gamepad around.

Nintendo has been known for its unique controller designs and if this picture proves to be legitimate, then this could be no different. Dual Pixels was the first site to get a hold of the leaked images, which heavily resemble Nintendo's patent designs.

If current rumours are accurate, then developers are currently getting their hands on Nintendo NX development kits, which means the hardware we see here could differ from the final version. However, there is also talk of the NX being revealed in just a few months time closer to E3, so it is possible that Nintendo already has a good idea of what it wants to ship to  consumers.

The controller itself has a pod-like shape, with two analogue sticks with what looks like a screen covering the entire surface of the pad. The screen portion of the gamepad may also be touch sensitive, evidenced by what looks to be a flat ‘B' button underneath the right-hand analogue stick.

KitGuru Says: Nintendo seems to be cooking up some interesting ideas for the NX. If the surface of the gamepad is also a touch sensitive display, then the picture in place will likely change from game to game as well. Are any of you looking forward to seeing what Nintendo does with the NX? I must admit, I'm very curious, especially after seeing this controller, which is unlike anything we have seen from the likes of Sony or Microsoft.

If you have been following VR development over the years, then you may know that back in the 90's Nintendo tried to bring virtual reality to the masses with the Virtual Boy. The console didn't take off and things on the VR front went quiet for many years. However, the technology is set to make a resurgence in 2016, with the Oculus Rift and Sony's PlayStation VR so it looks like Nintendo might be interested once again.

In a briefing with investors that took place this week, Nintendo said that it was “looking into” virtual reality once again. However, no further details were provided during the call, so we don't know how this will fit into Nintendo's future plans.

We do know that Nintendo said that there is no change in plans for its smartphone app rollout and with the company's bigger focus on mobile, maybe we'll see a mobile-focussed VR device like Samsung's Gear VR, rather than something console or PC based like the Oculus or PlayStation VR. That said, this is all speculation at this point.

Nintendo does have another big console coming up soon known as the Nintendo NX though not much is known about it at this time.

KitGuru Says: Nintendo's first attempt at virtual reality didn't play out too well but considering how far the technology has come since then, maybe we will see Nintendo return to it in the next couple of years.

This news first appeared on Twitter, with @Emi1yRogers claiming that she and several other users, some of whom are NeoGAF forum members, heard from several unnamed individuals that a new game was in the works. Initially they promised to release the identity of the game on Monday the 25th, but eventually decided to announce it all early.

Although this still remains a rumour for now, so needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, we're told it's a first party, Nintendo published title. The developer is said to be Intelligent Systems, a developer that has worked with Nintendo for decades at this point and was behind the previous Paper Mario entries on N64, Gamecube Wii and 3DS.

No surprise really that it's behind a new one, if indeed these rumours are true.

According to one firm, the Nintendo NX may be much closer to release than we all expected. Japanese finance company, Nomura Securities, has stated publicly that it believes Nintendo will announce the next-generation console by May, reveal it by June and will get it on shelves and into the hands of gamers by as soon as October or November.

Nintendo has struggled over the past few years to popularise its Wii U. Analysts have argued over the reasons for its difficulties, but most agree that it relates to poor brand recognition, lack of third party support and a controller that's unique traits have for the most part been under utilised. With that in mind, many people are looking to a successor console to turn things around for the Japanese company, and the Nintendo NX is supposed to be just that.

nx

Initially expected to be showed off in 2016 and perhaps debut in 2017, it now seems like it may show up far sooner than expected. However if true, that would not be good news for the Wii U. The console has limped its way to more than 10 million units shipped around the world, but was expected to receive a real boost with the releases of a new Zelda, Pokken tournament and a brand new Star Fox.

If the NX releases this year, or even if most Nintendo fans think it will, far fewer will be interested in buying games for a system that is going to be antiquated in a few months' time.

Nomura Securities also stated that it believed the NX would impact sales of the 3DS (as per Barrons), possibly with features that made it possible to use the console while out and about, as well as in the home.

We've been hearing a lot of rumours over the last few months regarding Nintendo's next console, the NX. So far, we have no idea what it is going to be or what features it will bring to the table but we do know that Nintendo has been making some interesting patent filings, the most recent of which, shows off a gamepad built out of a display.

Smartphone makers like Samsung have already begun experimenting with flexible displays but Nintendo could have other plans in mind. The patent image was submitted by five Nintendo employees, describing a game controller with a front facing touch screen display, with two holes punched out to make room for analogue sticks.

nintendo_patent.0

The screen itself could use LCD or OLED technology and even be capable of glasses-free 3D, just like the 3DS. The filing also shows off some non gaming usage scenarios, like a browser in the centre of the display.

Nintendo has been known to do its own thing and not follow industry trends, so it would make sense to see the company do something totally unexpected with the NX and as far as gamepads go, this is about as unexpected as you can get. Right now, we don't know when the NX will launch or when Nintendo will announce anything new, but rumours are suggesting that mass production will begin in Q1 2016.

KitGuru Says: It will certainly be interesting to see what Nintendo comes up with for the Nintendo NX, especially if it ends up following what is listed in this patent. Do you guys think Nintendo should keep trying with its ‘out of the box' controllers? Would you rather see it adopt a more traditional style?

Nintendo still has two big game launches left in the Wii U but that isn't stopping rumours surrounding the company's next console, currently codenamed the ‘NX'. We already know that Nintendo is planning a new console, though it isn't sharing any details until 2016. However, we could potentially see the console release next year too, with supply chain rumours suggesting that the system is already in mass production.

On top of that, a new rumour coming from a supply chain source speaking with DigiTimes, claims that Nintendo is currently expected to ship around ten to twelve million NX units in 2016, with Foxconn currently in charge of production duties.

iwata-nintendo-nx-will-surprise-gamers

While these rumours could pan out and Nintendo could potentially be stocking up on Nintendo NX consoles already, the Wii U still has some life left in it, with Star Fox due out early next year. We are also awaiting a new release date for the next Zelda game, though Nintendo could pull a ‘Twilight Princess' and release the game on both the Wii U and NX .

Either way, it will be interesting to see what Nintendo does next year, though it is difficult to predict considering that Nintendo often does things very differently to the other two big console makers.

Nintendo isn't going to officially talk about its upcoming console, the Nintendo NX, until next year. However, that isn't stopping early information from circulating the web, we've already got a look at a few newly filed patents and now current reports are suggesting that the NX will be a console-handheld hybrid device. The NX will feature the console itself, and then a mobile-type device to take away with you.

This report comes from the Wall Street Journal, saying: “People familiar with the development plans said Nintendo would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use. They also said Nintendo would aim to put industry-leading chips in the NX devices, after criticism that the Wii U’s capabilities didn’t match those of competitors.”

iwata-nintendo-nx-will-surprise-gamers

We don't know what industry-leading chips the report is referring to. It could simple mean that the Nintendo NX will adopt a similar chip to the one found in the PS4 and Xbox One, or it could mean that the company is looking to cram even better hardware in to its new console.

It should also be noted that The Wall Street Journal has got its Nintendo information wrong in the past, as was the case with the Legend of Zelda TV show, that was apparently in the making with Netflix and would offer a darker live-action view of the characters and world from the game. At the same time, the idea of Nintendo releasing a console-handheld hybrid makes a lot of sense.

Nintendo just recently started breaking in to mobile gaming. Additionally, the 3DS has been very successful this generation, while the Wii U has lagged behind significantly. If Nintendo could create hardware and software good enough to allow users to take their console games on the go with them, then the NX could turn out to be a very exciting package.

On top of all of that, Nintendo is apparently meeting up with developers already and handing out the software development kit, meaning studios can start planning for future games.

KitGuru Says: If these reports turn out to be true, then the Nintendo NX will be a pretty exciting console from Nintendo and it will be interesting to see what the company does. However, Things still sound quite early on, we won't be hearing anything official until next year and even then, we don't know if we'll see the console actually launch next year.

Earlier this year, Nintendo revealed that it is already planning its follow-up to the Wii U, currently known as the Nintendo NX. While the company isn't ready to publicly say more about its future console until next year, this recently filed patent may give us a peek at its plans.

Nintendo filed a patent application back in February for a new system, which would ditch the disc drive but retain SD card slots. The patent filing took place at a similar time to the reveal of NX, so the timing seems to add up.

Nintendo Patent

The application description reads: “An example system includes an internal hard disk drive storing a program and/or data, a communication unit transmitting/receiving a program and/or data via a network, and a processor executing a program stored in the hard disk drive to perform game processing. The example system is not provided with an optical disk drive for reading out a program and/or data from an optical disk.”

Physical media hasn't been completely abandoned as there is still an SD card slot, though it is possible that this would make for expandable storage, rather than physical games. That said, this is just a patent filing, it is possible that Nintendo is just making sure it has this option by the time the NX rolls around, no final announcements have been made yet so things could change between now and next year.

KitGuru Says: Nintendo ditching optical media would be a pretty forward thinking approach, one that I think PC gamers in particular could get behind having gotten used to Steam over the years. However, Nintendo's online and digital services haven't been that great over the years so if it were to make the jump to all-digital, it would need to make sure it had all of that sorted out properly.

When Nintendo last year announced intention to release gaming platforms that improve “quality-of-life”, the idea was considered as a way to significantly expand the reach of Nintendo’s gaming devices beyond core and casual gamers. Many believed that it could be the next big thing for the company, whose Wii U console had failed to become popular. However, it looks like the company might have ditched the “QoL” initiative.

In fact, Nintendo has not ever revealed what was its “quality-of-life” plan all about. All Nintendo said was that it had some kind of a 10-year strategy to create gaming platforms for both gamers and non-gamers. The first part of the QoL grand plan involved bridging health and fitness with video games. According to Satoru Iwata, who passed away last month, the first product(s) from the QoL project would reach the market sometimes in fiscal 2015, whereas the ramp up of the device and profits from the platform were expected to materialize in fiscal 2016. However, it does not seem that any Nintendo QoL products are going to hit the market any time soon.

nintendo_interaction_with_games

“I think it’s been pushed to the back burner,” said Lewis Ward, research director for gaming at IDC, in an interview with Fortune. “It’s supposed to be released in the U.S. by the end of March [2016], but I haven’t heard anything. … [However,] I do think Nintendo has always had an interest in ‘Blue Ocean’ markets and health care and the intersection with their hardware and their software is something they’ve viewed as an opportunity.”

This is not the first time when Nintendo cancels certain products before releasing them. For example, the company ditched its Vitality Sensor device and software for Wii several years ago.

“I think it’s probably dead – just like the Wii Vitality Sensor was before and they didn’t tell anybody,” said Michael Pachter, managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities.

nintendo_health

The only product that Nintendo described as a part of its QoL initiative was “nearable” fatigue and sleep sensor that could be placed at bedside and would monitor body, breathing and heartbeat without necessity to wear anything.

nintendo_qol_health

Keeping in mind that sales of Nintendo hardware are collapsing and software revenue is growing slowly, the company has to concentrate on its next-gen devices and mobile initiatives. As a result, the QoL platform was either ditched, or put on the back burner.

“They have been completely invisible as a company since [Iwata] got sick,” said Mr. Pachter. “The whole point of helping with lifestyle was getting people to buy more Nintendo devices – and I think they’re hurting so badly in devices that they’re trying to [stop] the hemorrhaging there. I would say they’re probably focused on just getting their mobile initiative working. That’s far more important than [QOL]”

Nintendo did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Nintendo has clearly failed to explain what it planned to do or reveal its vision. As a result, it is simply unclear whether it is good or bad for the company (and us) that the project have been scrapped.

Although Nintendo confirmed earlier this year that it had begun development of its next-generation video game console code-named NX, it did not reveal any actual details about the forthcoming product. Apparently, the only reason why Nintendo disclosed the fact of development was to tell its customers that it will not exit the market of dedicated game consoles.

“Normally, we wouldn’t have taken that step of telling people we are working on the next system, but we wanted people to know we remain committed to the dedicated game device business,” said Scott Moffitt, executive vice president of sales at Nintendo of America, in an interview with Examiner.

It is not a secret that announcement of a new game console helps to sell existing hardware and software. Keeping in mind that sales of Nintendo Wii U are very slow, the company has clearly failed to make its current system popular, it made a great sense for the company to pre-announce its NX without revealing any details.

nintendo_logo

It is still unclear when Nintendo plans to release its next-gen system. It is logical to assume that the console will be released in 2016, around four years after Wii U. However, Nintendo does not want to confirm any timeframes. However, it claims that its customers were enthusiastic about the new console.

“Judging by our stock price, the [reaction] was very enthusiastic, but our game fans were also very enthusiastic,” said Mr. Moffitt. “People also respected the fact that we remain committed to making rich, deep experiences that they can enjoy in their living room.”

It is pretty evident that one of the reasons why Nintendo Wii U has failed on the market is its low performance and lack of support of high-definition resolutions. While it is very logical for Nintendo to add support for full-HD graphics to its next-generation video game system to be more competitive than its rivals, it will not do so, according to an industry expert.

Nintendo does not have plans to use high-performance hardware for its Nintendo NX video game system, according to a recent tweet by Liam Robertson of Unseen64, who has in the past been accurate with his insider info, reports Ubergizmo. In particular, Nintendo’s next-generation console will not be as powerful as existing consoles from Sony or Microsoft.

“The NX is definitely not aiming to compete with the likes of PS4 on a power level,” said Mr. Robertson. “Absolutely sure of that now.”

Introduced in late 2013, new-generation game systems from Sony and Microsoft can barely offer performance comparable to that of mainstream gaming personal computers nowadays. Not in all cases the consoles can render video games in 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second.

nintendo_wii_u_black

Various executives from Nintendo have always said that graphics processing performance is not the most important thing about game consoles. Instead of installing high-end hardware into its gaming systems, the company believes that it needs to offer unique user experience and distinctive games.

While unique games helped Nintendo to sell tens of millions of Wii consoles, its GameCube and Wii U have never become popular. Therefore, it is surprising that Nintendo does not want to use high-end hardware inside its Nintendo NX system.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Looks like Nintendo wants to bet on unique games once again and save on hardware. While it is obvious that Nintendo can use cheap hardware for its Nintendo NX, the question is how powerful can an inexpensive system-on-chip developed today be. Even modern mobile SoCs can handle 1080p graphics. Therefore, it will be pretty regrettable if Nintendo’s upcoming console will not support full-HD.

Since Nintendo Wii U game console has clearly failed on the market, Nintendo has changed its approach to development of its future hardware devices, according to unofficial information. The company’s next platform – Nintendo NX – is designed primarily in the U.S. Moreover, some of the key people at Nintendo are not involved in the process.

Shigeru Miyamoto is among the most influential video game developers of all time. While the legendary creator of video games is recognized for Mario, Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda, he is also known for his influence on development of Nintendo Wii game console, one of the most successful systems in Nintendo’s history. While Mr. Miyamoto is actively participating in creation of next-generation video games, he is not involved in design of Nintendo’s next console.

“I’ve pulled myself back out of some of the hardware section and I’m really focused on some of the software that I’m involved in – for example, the new Starfox game,” said Mr. Miyamoto in an interview with Fortune. “Of course I am observing and looking at the hardware, but I am not actively participating and making decisions.”

nintendo_shigeru_miyamoto

Last year it transpired that Nintendo hired a number of key developers for its next-generation hardware platforms in the U.S. As it turns out, development of the main system-on-chip for Nintendo NX will be carried out at Nintendo Technology Development, a subsidiary of Nintendo based in the U.S.

Historically Nintendo has developed virtually all key technologies for its gaming platforms in Japan. However, since there are more leading chip developers in the U.S., it makes more sense to design processors for Nintendo NX there.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: It remains to be seen how the change of hardware development strategy will affect actual game consoles from Nintendo. For three or four generations Nintendo did not create leading-edge hardware with serious amount of horsepower. Obviously, the failure of Wii U should have taught Nintendo a lesson, but the question is whether the company can actually design a competitive hardware platform.

Although Nintendo disclosed earlier this year that it is working on a new video game console, it did not reveal any details about the system. Last week the company re-emphasized that it will not talk about its NX console till 2016. The company also implied that the new device will feature a unique capability and one of the things that Nintendo is mulling about is removing region locks from the NX.

Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, said last week that he made a disclosure regarding the NX development in March largely to cull rumours about Nintendo’s plans to exit the market of home game consoles after Wii U’s failure to become a success. But while the company admits development, it will not discuss any details of the system till 2016. In fact, at present Nintendo even does not want to talk about availability timeframe of the new system.

One thing that Nintendo does reveal about its NX is the fact that it will not be a simple replacement for the Wii U, which suggests unique features and new user experience. Unfortunately, without real details it is impossible to guess how Nintendo NX will compare to Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4.

nintendo_wii

In a rather surprising move, Mr. Iwata said that Nintendo is mulling to remove region locks from its next-generation gaming platform, which means that it will be possible to install Japanese games on hardware bought in the U.K. or the U.S. Keeping in mind that Nintendo was among the first companies in the world to implement region locks, its plan to remove them is very symbolic.

KitGuru Says: It is great to see that Nintendo plans to remove region locks in its next-gen systems. Nintendo Wii U game console has failed to become popular and gamers nowadays prefer more advanced Microsoft Xbox One as well as Sony PlayStation 4. Nintendo has already confirmed development of the next-generation gaming system, but disclosed no details about it. In a recent interview the president of the company implied that the firm has not changed its attitude towards system design, which means that the Nintendo NX will differ from other consoles.

Both Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Wii U offered unique experiences impossible on competing gaming platforms: the former had motion-sensing controllers, whereas the latter featured a special gamepad with a built-in display. Neither of the consoles featured leading-edge graphics or general purpose processing capabilities, but unique experiences they provided brought in different results for the company. The Wii has managed to become the best-selling console among those released in the mid 2000-s, but the Wii U is a clear failure that is behind both PS4 and XBO in terms of unit sales.

While both Microsoft and Sony traditionally increase processing horsepower of their consoles in order to boost quality of graphics, create better games and enable new services, Nintendo plans to go another way again. Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo believes that modern game consoles – PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – are dull and his company’s next-gen system will actually surprise players.

“In the past few years, the idea of what [encompasses] a gaming platform gradually changed,” said Mr. Iwata in an interview with Nikkei, reports Kotaku. “However, if you only expand upon existing hardware, it is dull. In some shape or form, we are always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person’s video gaming life.”

Mr. Iwata agrees that major changes between platforms alienate some users and it becomes increasingly hard for the company to sustain its success throughout different generations of hardware. However, the president of Nintendo has always expressed point of view that his company should not directly compete against rivals like Sony and Microsoft, which is why the company has to offer something others do not. As a result, alienation of existing customers [because of significant changes between platforms] is a natural risk for Nintendo, which the company is willing to take.

Earlier this month Nintendo confirmed that it had started development of its new game console, which is currently called Nintendo NX. Previously it was reported that key elements of the platform if the NX, such as microprocessor and graphics processing unit, will be developed in the U.S.

KitGuru Says: From Mr. Iwata’s comments it is pretty obvious that Nintendo will continue to concentrate on unique things and will try to avoid direct competition against rivals. However, executives do not always show the whole picture when they speak to the public. Eventually it may turn out that the company is working on a true high-definition video game system more powerful than Xbox One and PlayStation 4. But Nintendo NX is due in 2017. Probably, a year or two before Microsoft and Sony may roll-out their next-gen consoles…

Nintendo on Tuesday confirmed that it had started development of its next-generation code-named “NX” video game console. The company revealed no details about the new product, but it is highly likely that the system will be a successor to the struggling Wii U. The console might hit the market as soon as in 2017.

“As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename ‘NX’,” said Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, during a press conference.

Late last year it transpired that Nintendo started to hire personnel in the U.S. to develop key chips for its next-generation game console. It was also revealed that the company planned to license graphics processing and general-purpose processing technologies from Advanced Micro Devices. However, nothing has been confirmed officially so far.

At present Nintendo shares no details concerning its “NX” system since it is years away. The only thing we do know about the product is that it is a “dedicated game system”, not some kind of universal device. Considering the fact that the company plans to start talking about its next console next year, it is likely that the system will be released in 2017.

“It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year,” said Mr. Iwata.

KitGuru Says: A good thing that we’ve learnt today is that Nintendo is not going anywhere. It plans to continue developing game consoles in the future and is not leaving the market. Great news for gamers!
