AMD recently released a new driver (24.3.1) that brings full overclocking support to the Radeon RX 7900 GRE “Golden Rabbit Edition” graphics card.

This card was previously only available in the Chinese market but is now available worldwide. At launch, reviewers (including us) noted issues with overclocking, which resulted in performance increases that fell short of expectations. AMD identified the problem as an erroneous memory tuning limit and promised to fix it with a driver update.

As noted by TechPowerUP, the latest driver release delivers on this promise by correcting the RAM overclocking problem on the RX 7900 GRE. The driver update rewrites the overclocking limitations in the card's VBIOS, a much simpler solution than updating the firmware for all RX 7900 GRE variants. In addition, the new driver includes a clock limit override, which changes the power limit during bootup.

The updated driver allows RX 7900 GRE cards to reach memory speeds of up to 3000MHz (24Gbps), a significant increase from the previous limit of 2316MHz (18.5Gbps).

Unfortunately, the MSI RTX 4070 Ti Super graphics card didn't launch on the best terms. As reported by various outlets and confirmed by MSI itself, these cards hit the shelves with a BIOS that wasn't optimal, negatively affecting their performance. Since then, MSI has released updates to the BIOS of its RTX 4070 Ti Super cards.

As noted by MSI, their “R&D department discovered that [its] new GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16G Ventus 3X graphics card does not deliver its full potential”. After MSI found the issue, the company started working on a fix so the card could deliver its expected performance. We already tested the new BIOS (95.03.45.40.F0), and compared to the older one (95.03.45.40.58), and we only saw a very minor difference in performance. Still, free performance is always good, even if it should be there in the first place.

Besides the RTX 4070 Ti Super Ventus 3X, MSI also released new BIOS for other cards. The table below specifies which ones and the respective link to download the latest BIOS:

Name Download URL
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16G Ventus 3X [BIOS Update]
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16G Ventus 3X OC [BIOS Update]
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16G Gaming X Slim [BIOS Update]
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16G Gaming X Slim OC [BIOS Update]
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16G Ventus 2X [BIOS Update]
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16G Ventus 3X OC [BIOS Update]

If you have one of these cards, we recommend downloading the BIOS update and following the installation instructions. The instructions can be found in the description below the “Download” button.

ASRock is gradually transitioning its product portfolio to include dual-colour designs. With the Taichi and Steel Legend series already featuring white-coloured models, ASRock is now turning its attention to its Phantom Gaming products, starting with the newly announced Radeon RX 7900 XT Phantom Gaming White.

The new graphics card is identical to the black model in terms of specs and design, with the white shroud and backplate being the only apparent differences between the two. The PCB used is still black, but you shouldn't notice this too much thanks to the full-cover backplate.

The RX 7900 XT, introduced by AMD nearly a year ago, has 84 CUs based on the RDNA 3 architecture, equating to 5376 stream processors. It also comes with 20GB of GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit memory bus and 80MB of Infinity Cache. This particular model comes factory overclocked, featuring a game clock of 2075MHz and a boost clock of 2450MHz. Compared to AMD’s reference specifications, that's a 2.3% to 2.5% overclock.

ASRock's RX 7900 XT Phantom Gaming White 20 GB OC graphics card has three 10cm fans. The “ultra-fit” heatpipe design incorporates six heat pipes attached to a large heatsink reinforced by a metal frame.

KitGuru says: Which Phantom Gaming design do you prefer? Do you think other AiB partners should launch more white-coloured graphics cards?

Earlier this week, rumours began circulating suggesting that Intel is due to release a BIOS update in order to block BCLK overclocking on locked (non-K) Skylake processors. Now, it seems like that is what is happening as ASRock is the first motherboard maker to come out with a new BIOS update, which does disable the function.

This BIOS update was released for a range of ASRock motherboards. In the description, we can see that two key changes were made, the first being an update to CPU microcode to 0x76 and the second update is the removal of SKY OC, a feature used to overclock non-K series Skylake processors.

BIOS updates

We will likely see other motherboard makers follow suit with updates to disable BCLK overclocking on locked Skylake chips. Most of ASRock's boards have the update available now but there might still be a few left over, as we can see, the Fatal1ty FM2A88x+ Killer board only got the update today.

KitGuru Says: When we originally reported that Intel might be blocking BCLK overclocking on non-K Skylake processors, a lot of our readers seemed disappointed in the decision. Did any of you actually try out this overclocking method? Did it cause any issues at all?

Overclocking today is far easier than it once was, but that doesn't mean that there isn't some real science behind it. Only a deft hand can coax those few extra megahertz from a CPU, especially this latest generation of Skylake chips. If you think you might be one of those people, how does your overclock measure up to everyone else's?

Fortunately finding that answer out is much easier than you might expect. Thanks to our overclocking pal Eric Lin, there's a long list of confirmed Skylake overclocks which you can measure yourself up against.

skylakechips

For a quick reference, the average core clock achieved by those submitted to the database is just shy of 4.7 GHz, so don't expect to place highly with a couple of hundred extra MHz on your chip. You don't necessarily need to have a K-unlocked chip to compete though. Sitting in 11th place right now is SteveRo, with a 6400 CPU that has a Blck of 177.8, giving him 4.8GHz without even touching the multiplier.

However what you will need to get high on that list is a decent cooling loop. With Vcore boosting comes the inevitable rise in temperature, so expect to need some large radiators and a high-quality water-block to reach the frequencies of the top few.

If you do have a K chip, a good WC loop and the time, effort and know-how to push your system to its maximum, the frequency to beat is 5GHz. Brumbaer currently holds that honour at the top spot, though he did require a near 1.6 Vcore to make it happen.

Got yourself a Haswell chip instead? There's an overclocking table for that too.

KitGuru Says: You might need to get handy with a razor blade to compete with these guys too. Many of those top CPUs were delidded.

G.Skill is no stranger to breaking new ground when it comes to memory speed world records, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that it's done that once again, this time smashing the DDR4 world record with a frequency of 4255MHz.

Unlike some previous records however, this wasn't achieved at an OC challenge or public event, but at the G.Skill labs, where the company pushed one of its Ripjaw kits to the staggering frequency, with timings of CL18-18-18.

The motherboard used was an ASUS Rampage V Extreme featuring the X99 chipset, while the CPU was Intel's I7-5960X. As you might expect from an extreme, OC, everything was cooled with liquid-nitrogen.

It looks like it wasn't just G.Skill that was ahead of the curve at Computex‘s overclocking competition, with Asus also walking away a champion, by helping to claim new performance records for a variety of different synthetic benchmarks.

ASUS announced today that it helped achieve world records in the following: SuperPi 32M, Haswell CPU Frequency, SuperPI 1M, PiFast, wPrime32M, wPrime1024m, Aquamark 3, 3DMark01, 3Dmark 11 (performance) and 3DMark Firestrike (extreme). The only record that the ASUS board wasn't able to eclipse, was the Haswell memory frequency one, which remains at 3782.8MHz.

However, everything else tumbled quite spectacularly, with liquid nitrogen, insulation and copper piping everywhere. Perhaps the most impressive was the CPU frequency record, which saw the Asus Maximus VI Extreme take a 4th gen Intel i7 CPU, all the way up to a ridiculous 7.1GHz.

This strange looking GPU was also on show, described as the GTX Titan Andre Edition, requiring five PCI express six pin power connectors.

One of KitGuru's bugbears has been AMD's consistency in releasing processors that may well be appealing – but then burying them under the weight of a mainboard that costs more than the chip. Now it seems that there better options available from resellers like Aria. KitGuru pulls out a Casio FX calculator to add up the cost of entry level overclocking in 2013.

Coolers, memory and hard drives are all looking pretty stable – in terms of price. There is a slight upward pressure on RAM right now, but this will ease when the dollar rate relaxes.

When it comes to graphics cards, you have never had it so good you lucky people. AMD's attack with the 7870 Tahiti LE edition and the new assault from nVidia with the GTX 650 Ti Boost plus money off the GTX 660 cards all add up to a nice bargain – whatever you choose.

Which brings us to the mainboard and CPU.

Almost 2/3 of the KitGuru audience believes that the FX6000 series contains the best processors on the market under £100. That's the same group of KitGuru readers where 80% believe that – money no object – you should buy an Intel ‘k' series chip.

So you have decided on something like a 6200 or 6300, but don't want to spend £100 on a 990 chipset mainboard. What are your options?

The latest price move from Asus and Aria, brings the M5A78L-M LX V2 into play for a lot of customers. At £29.58 + VAT you can get this for £35.50 all in.

That gives you the option for an FX-6300 (£104.88) based system for a total of £140.38 – which is £100 under the lowest 3570k from the same reseller.

Whatever your individual mainboard preferences, this push on 760G boards will certainly help open the world of +4GHz computing for more and more overclockers.

We really wish Intel would reconsider creating a ‘k' processor for the Core i3 series.

ASUS-M5A78L-M-LX-V2-kitguru-Aria

KitGuru says: Depending on your skill, set-up and ‘how long you want it to live', the 6300 should give you 4.4GHz to 4.8GHz. Which should be enough for Solitaire.

Proving your overclocking skills and winning great prizes could not be simpler.

KitGuru is working with Asus, Kingston and Multiplay to help launch a new kind of overclocking competition – and you can enter in as little as 5 minutes!

CPU-Z is a free utility that's quick and easy to download and install from here.

.
To enter this competition, run CPU-Z on your rig before you overclock it – and again after you have made your tweaks.

Each test takes only seconds to run and, after you run CPU-Z, you can ‘click a button' to validate your results online.

Email the 2 validated scores to asuscompetition@kitguru.net and we'll let you know if you're a winner.

Your scores must be achieved with only air cooling… No Liquid Nitrogen, Alcohol/CO2 combinations etc… Just a cooler and paste.

The best 12 overclockers, from across the UK, will come together to see who's best and increase their prizes even further.

Along the way, you will receive an exclusive briefing from Benchtec founder Paul Watkinson.

Prizes and knowledge and bragging rights – does it get any better?!?!?

Don't delay… Enter TODAY!

Gorgeous game guru Chenai says the Asus O/C prize fund is tastier than the jammiest of donuts. Who are we to argue?

KitGuru says: You have nothing to lose and PLENTY to gain. Bragging rights are just the beginning!

Email your scores to asuscompetition@kitguru.net today.

One of the biggest surprises of 2010 was the CPU cooling launches by Thermaltake. While the company has created some of the neatest looking coolers you're likely to see (think V1), the cooling capability was not always there (think V1). The Contac29 and Frio changed that dramatically in 2010, but is Thermaltake sitting back or continuing to evolve its designs ? KitGuru sneaks a look inside Tt's lab.

Without doubt, Zardon's favourite air cooler is the Noctua NH D14. He even calls it ‘The Austrian Sandwich', this beast of a cooler has been the yardstick for CPU chilling technology since it launched in November 2009.

Having got as far as the Frio, it now seems that Thermaltake's engineers have an eye on the prize and they're going for in on the CPU cooling front. It's a tough job, can they do it?

Initial testing inside the Thermaltake lab seems to indicate that they're on the right track.

Let's just say this nice and loud up front – what's been seen/photographed/reported was entirely prepared by the company making the product. Don't change any of your purchasing plans until the KitGuru labs have had hands on with the new kit (watch this space).

OK, product warning out of the way, let's have a look at some of the snaps.

The old and new Frio product boxes side by side show that the OC KING does in fact use less packaging.

Old Frio box is bigger... and who said that size mattered?
Test bench set up explained while a videographer watches on in HD
Thermaltake Techo Guru Dino explains the set up and features in detail
Technician checks again that both systems have the same set up
Noctua in situ - fairly standard looking set up
Core i7 chip clocked at 4GHz and left to run Prime for 15 minutes
In this test, the NH D14 scored 83 degrees
This Frio OC King set up showed it 7 degrees south of that, at just 76 degrees

So there you have it. Exclusive pics from inside the bunker – and they're definitely showing more than a few heatpipes and fins, but what exactly are they telling us?

No indication on price, but we'd be surprised if it was much more than £10 over the Frio – even with the additional heatpipes and improved fan system – which would still put it way under the NH D14 in terms of wallet-pain.

KitGuru says: We've heard that the internal video that Thermaltake were shooting in these snaps will be available soon. Once we've seen it in HD-action, we can give you some more details. Only truly believe this remarkable demonstration once Zardon's put the new Frio OC King under the ‘microscope of enduring holy truth' in the KitGuru Lab.
