Back at launch in July 2015 we reviewed the OCZ Trion 100 SSD's. These were the first OCZ drives to feature a Toshiba controller and A19 TLC NAND flash. Today we look at the latest iteration of the Trion series, dubbed the ‘Trion 150'. The Trion 150 feature 15nm Toshiba Triple Level Cell TLC NAND and are available in 120GB, 240GB, 480GB and 960GB capacities. OCZ told us that pricing will fall in line with the older Trion 100 drives in the budget sector of the market.

All Trion drives ship inside 7mm thick chassis to ensure complete compatibility with ultra thin notebooks. The 120GB, 240GB, 480GB and 960GB models all ship with the latest 15nm Toshiba Triple Level Cell TLC NAND and are fully supported under the OCZ ShieldPlus Warranty System. We have delved into this before, but you can catch up, over HERE.

information

All of the drives in the Trion 150 portfolio are capable of delivering a 550 MB/s maximum read rate. The smaller capacity drives suffer from slightly reduced write performance. Both 480GB and 960GB drives have a 530 MB/s rated limit, while the 240GB drive drops to 520 MB/s and the 120GB to 450 MB/s.

In regards to IOPS performance, the bigger drives again perform better. The 960GB model is rated at 90,000 IOPS read (4K QD32 test) and 64,000 IOPS write (4K QD32 test). The 480GB drive matches the read result of 90,000 IOPS, but write performance drops by 10,000 to 54,000 IOPS. The 240GB drive has a further reduced write IOPS rating of 43,000. At the bottom of the performance chart is the 120GB model which delivers 79,000 IOPS and 25,000 IOPS for 4K read and write respectively.

The larger capacity drives are rated for greater daily usage transfers, from 27GB/day with the 120GB drive, to 219 GB/day with the 960GB drive.

We have reviewed many OCZ solid state drives in the last year and today we are looking at their latest Octane 512GB model. There is no doubt that OCZ have been at the forefront of SSD development in the last year, focusing almost exclusively on Sandforce based products. For those of you who have been around as long as me however, you may remember that OCZ were the first company to partner up with Indilinx and today they reaffirm that union by including an Indilinx Everest controller in the Octane drive.

The particular strengths of this drive are based around the NAND durability, which is trademarked under the ‘nDurance' moniker. In basic terms, this means that the Octane drives have a two times increase in rated NAND program/erase systems, for longer life.

OCZ are also using customised page mapping algorithms that help ensure the drive has continuous, stable overall performance with both compressible and incompressible data. The 512GB drive is a 6 Gbp/s drive rated at a very capable 535 MB/s max read, and 400 MB/s max write. Bear in mind, it is important not to confuse this drive with the Octane S2, which is a slower SATA 3Gbp/s solid state drive.

SSD drives haven't quite reached ‘mainstream' yet, however as more enthusiast users are realising the performance benefits, sales figures are increasing and the adoption rate is improving.

SSD performance is based around three areas, the Controller, the Firmware and the NAND. The controllers are massively important to the overall unit with products from Micron, Samsung, Sandforce, Toshiba, Indilinx and Intel making up the six big players. The Micron Marvell controller is right now the performance leader and we reviewed the Crucial RealSSD C300 256Gb drive a few weeks ago. This is the only current unit based around a 6GBps controller which means there is no real competition, unless you configure a dual Raid 0 configuration.

For many years OCZ have used tried and trusted Indilinx controllers but in recent months they moved to create units based around the Sandforce SF-1200 controller, which has helped them squeeze out more performance from the drives. This leads me into our review product today, the OCZ Agility 2 120GB which uses the very same controller.
