There were many concerns shared when game subscription services came to prominence, with some devs fearing the netflix model would not work well for games. According to statements by Game Pass affiliated studios, sales in fact increased after coming to Game Pass. According to Lorne Lanning – the creator of Oddworld Soulstorm – this wasn’t the case with Sony.

Lorne Lanning recently sat down with the Xbox Expansion Podcast where he revealed that the studio missed out on a great deal of potential profift due to their deal with PlayStation Plus.

As transcribed by Gamesindustry.biz, Lanning discussed some of the terms of the deal made with Sony, revealing that it was considered good money at the time, claiming that “The most we could sell is less than the money we're getting… we might sell 50,000 units at launch, maybe 100,000 units. It was pretty small numbers because there wasn't going to be a lot of PS5s.”

Of course, the deal was struck long before release, but due to Oddworld Soulstorm being delayed from January 2021 to April, the PS5’s user base was larger, and so the revenue per-captia fell far shorter than the team at Oddworld Inhabitants were expecting.

Of course, it seems as though Sony adhered to the pre-defined contract and there is no ill will between the two, but it is unfortunate none-the-less to see the new way of distributing games negatively affect a small studio.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Lanning’s claims? Should Sony change the way their subscription partnerships work? Are we moving towards a subscription-only future? Let us know down below.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is the latest entry in a long list of platformer titles which stretch all the way back to 1997. Originally released in April of this year, Oddworld: Soulstorm was announced to be getting an ‘Enhanced Edition’ featuring “dramatically improved gameplay mechanics and motion code, audio balance improvements” and much more – the release date of which we now know.

In a press release, the team at Oddworld Inhabitants (the developers of the Oddworld franchise) announced that Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition will be launching on the 30th of November for the Xbox Series X|S; Xbox One; PlayStation 4; PlayStation 5 and PC (via the Epic Games Store).

Originally revealed last month, Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition takes the latest entry in the long-running platformer franchise and adds “dramatically improved gameplay mechanics and motion code, audio balance improvements, seven additional months of polish, improved Slig and follower AI (more intelligent and responsive), as well as all previously released updates and brand-new content.”

While the original Soulstorm was already available on PlayStation systems and PC, this Enhanced Edition will be the first time that the game is coming to Xbox platforms – and with how many changes there are, it seems that Xbox players will be benefiting from the extended wait. Those who already own the game on PlayStation or PC will be able to ‘upgrade’ to the Enhanced Edition for free, meaning that everyone will now be able to experience the definitive edition of this game.

We have seen all manner of games re-released with new content and more. It is however interesting to see changes to core elements such as the AI and gameplay. Perhaps the closest comparison that can be made is to the Scholar of the First Sin edition of Dark Souls 2, which fundamentally changed the game. It will be interesting to see just how much better Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition is – especially as the original release was mired by a mixed reception.

Being the new challenger in the PC gaming marketplace, the Epic Games Store has had to entice players to its storefront via a number of methods. One of these is through exclusivity agreements. While most of these have been timed-exclusives, it would appear that some will remain exclusive to the Epic Games Store permanently.

The Apple vs Epic Games court case continues to offer a great deal of insight into the inner workings of these two giant corporations. One of the latest revelations brought to light thanks to the release of internal documents (and discovered by ResetEra user AshenOne) is the fact that Epic Games has paid for certain games to be permanently exclusive to its storefront.

According to the document, Oddworld: Soulstorm, Auto Chess, 10 Crowns, Ooblets and World War Z are all lifetime exclusive titles to the Epic Games Store – at least on PC. As mentioned, Epic Games has partnered with developers and publishers since the conception of its store to bring a number of major titles exclusively to its storefront. It was recently discovered that the Fortnite publisher paid $146 to get Borderlands 3 exclusively on its store. That being said, the exclusivity agreement only lasted 6 months.

While not the biggest titles in the world, obtaining lifetime exclusivity on Oddworld: Soulstorm, Auto Chess, 10 Crowns, Ooblets and World War Z is an interesting move, and begs the question as to what other titles Epic Games has obtained lifetime exclusivity on.

Recently we reported that PlayStation’s Jim Ryan expressed his intentions to keep offering brand new games for free through PlayStation Plus at launch. It did not take long for these words to come into effect, as PlayStation has now announced that Oddworld: Soulstorm will be made free to PS Plus users on PS5 when the game arrives this April.

During last night’s State of Play, a new trailer for Oddworld: Soulstorm was shown off, giving fans another look at the dark and twisted world of Oddworld. Following the conclusion of the trailer and the reveal that Soulstorm arrives on the 6th of April, it was announced that “Oddworld: Soulstorm is one of your PlayStation Plus games for April 2021. PlayStation Plus members will be able to download the PS5 version of the game at no extra cost during that time.”

Ever since Rocket League came to PS Plus day and date with its worldwide release, PlayStation has continued to bring brand new titles to the service. With the launch of PS5 however, it seems the console manufacturer is doubling down on this.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is the 3rd game to launch day-and-date on PS Plus ever since the launch of PS5 (the other two being Bugsnax and Destruction AllStars). It would seem Sony is pushing the benefits to PS Plus further than before, perhaps in order to compete with Game Pass. It will be interesting to see what other games come to the service next.
