Cooler Master has recently filed a lawsuit against SilverStone, Enermax, and their joint OEM Apaltek. Cooler Master has accused the three companies of infringing on its patents. The complaint was filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

According to TechPowerUp, Cooler Master claims the three companies have violated three of its US patents. The alleged infringing products include SilverStone's IceMyst 240, PF240, PF240W, IceGem 360, VIDA 240 Slim, and RGB Controller, as well as Enermax's Aquafusion ADV, Liqmax III ARGB, Liqtech 360 TR4 II Slim, and RGB Controller. Apaltek, which is being sued as the original technology provider for SilverStone and Enermax, does not sell any products under its name.

Cooler Master specifically claims that the pump-inside-radiator design and the ARGB mini-controller are its inventions and that the core design of the coolers also infringes on its patents. The company is seeking damages and legal fees as relief.

One of the defendants has responded to the lawsuit, stating that Cooler Master's behaviour is that of a “bully”, due to the accusations levied at smaller competitors, while excluding other Apaltek customers.

It seems Nvidia is giving a different RTX 3050 GPU with fewer CUDA cores to OEMs. The specifications of the new RTX 3050 variant were made public through Nvidia's official website, allowing us to see the differences between both the standard and OEM variants.

Weibo user Golden Pig Upgrade Pack shared a photo of what seems to be the OEM version of the RTX 3050 graphic card. According to the uploader, this version of the GPU only features 2,304 CUDA cores, a considerable cut from the 2,560 CUDA cores of the reference model. As per the photo, the RTX 3050 for OEMs is powered by an 8-pin power connector and features a dual-fan cooling design. The PCB looks similar to the one used in the reference model.

As it seems, this card is relatively new. Nvidia has recently updated the spec summary of the RTX 3050, adding the 2,304 CUDA cores variant. According to the spec sheet, this GPU also comes with slightly lower clock speeds, as the GPU has a 1.51GHz base clock and a 1.76 GHz boost clock. TDP (130W) and memory configuration (8GB GDDR6 at 14Gbps on a 128-bit memory bus) remain unchanged.

We don't know what GPU revision is being used on the RTX 3050 OEM, but VideoCardz estimates that it may be the GA107-140 revision, which we heard about earlier this year.

KitGuru says: Considering it features fewer CUDA cores and lower clock speeds, this version of the RTX 3050 should also draw less power than the standard model. Unfortunately, Nvidia's spec sheet shows that's not the case.

We've known for a while now that Intel is set to bring its Alder Lake processors to laptops in early 2022. Now, Intel EVP, Gregory Bryant, has confirmed as much, confirming that 12th Gen Core mobile processors, otherwise known as ‘Alder Lake-P', have begun shipping to OEMs.

Gregory M Bryant, executive vice president and general manager at Intel client computing group, has shared the milestone via Twitter. Here, Gregory posted a photo with multiple members of the design and development teams of the upcoming processors, thanking them for their work on the upcoming products.

Succeeding the 11th Gen Core ‘Tiger Lake' processors, Intel's upcoming mobile CPUs are expected to feature an Intel 7 hybrid architecture, similar to its desktop counterparts. Packing up to 6x P-cores and 8x E-cores, these processors are said to come with a maximum clock speed of 5.0GHz. We've already shared benchmarks results of the Intel Core i9-12900HK, the Core i7-12800H and the Core i7-12700H on Geekbench and Cinebench, which should give you an idea of how they will perform.

Intel should announce these processors and the Arc Alchemist GPUs at CES, scheduled for January 2022.

KitGuru says: Intel will have new mobile CPUs and its first discrete GPUs for laptops very soon, which should shake up the market next year. Are any of you thinking about picking up a new laptop soon? Will you be waiting for Intel's new 12th Gen CPUs and Arc Alchemist GPUs?

Not long ago, we shared the news that AMD is planning to introduce four new SKUs to expand its Ryzen 5000 series lineup, including the Ryzen 7 5800 and the Ryzen 9 5900. At the time, there wasn't much more information about these processors besides the TDP. Fortunately, we now have the first rumoured specifications, which includes the cache and maximum stock clock frequencies of both SKUs.

The rumoured specifications were shared by @momomo_us, which stated that the 8C/16T AMD Ryzen 7 5800 CPU will feature the same total cache (36MB) and core configuration as its X variant, but the maximum boost frequency will be 100MHz lower (4.6GHz). The 12C/24T Ryzen 9 5900 will follow suit, offering the same amount of core, threads, and cache (70MB), but the maximum boost clock will also be 100MHz lower (at 4.7GHz) compared to the Ryzen 9 5900X.

AMD hasn't confirmed the availability of the non-X Ryzen 5000 SKUs yet, but rumours claim that these processors will only be available for the OEM market, leaving the X variants for DIY customers. Additionally, we also have heard rumours about the Ryzen 5 5600, which is expected to release in early 2021, priced at $220.

AMD will hold a keynote on January 12th, at CES 2021, so it is possible we will hear more about these SKUs very soon.

KitGuru says: Do you think AMD will restrict the non-X variant of the Ryzen 5000 SKUs to the OEM market? Would you rather buy the non-X Ryzen 5000 SKUs over the X ones?

Since launch, Microsoft has been pumping out big ‘feature updates' for Windows 10 once or twice a year. The previous feature update in May 2019 doubled the operating system's minimum storage requirements and now as we near the upcoming 1909 November feature update, CPU requirements are being updated too, although this change is aimed at OEMs rather than consumers.

Companies looking to ship laptop, desktop or mobile devices with Windows 10 version 1909 or 1903 pre-installed will need to be using a processor from Microsoft's CPU requirements list. CPU requirements for OEM-built devices are identical for the May 2019 update and the upcoming November 2019 update, calling for Intel 10th Gen Core i3, i5, i7 or i9 processors, an Intel Xeon E-22 series CPU, or an assortment of Atom, Celeron or Pentium processors.

microsoft_windows_10_devices-e1481747805696.jpg

AMD is also on the supported CPU list. The main update here is the inclusion of Ryzen 3rd Gen and new EPYC CPUs, although AMD 7th Gen A-series, E-series, FX-9 series and Athlon 2 CPUs are also supported.

Finally, Microsoft has also updated its supported Qualcomm processors. The Snapdragon 850 continues to be on the list and is now joined by Snapdragon 8cx series chips, presumably in preperation for the incoming wave of 5G PCs we are going to see in 2020.

As always, workstation grade CPUs like Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron and AMD EPYC are only supported on Windows 10 Pro for Workstations or Windows 10 Enterprise.

KitGuru Says: This isn't anything major for DIY system builders, but it gives us an interesting look at what CPUs we'll be seeing in new pre-built laptops, desktops and tablets. With many major PC OEMs preparing new 5G connected devices for 2020, this will be a big topic of discussion in the months to come, especially around CES.

Microsoft has announced that it will no longer be selling Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium and Ultimate to OEMs after the 31st of October. Mainstream support for the OS is also due to end a few months later, on the 13th of January 2015.

Windows 7 Professional edition will presumably remain available to OEMs as an end of supply date has yet to be established. This news isn't particularly surprising as retail supply for Windows 7 was cut off in October last year, although many retailers still have some remaining stock left. Microsoft usually pulls OEM supply of an OS a year after retail.

Windows 7

This news comes just a few days before Microsoft is expected to reveal the developer preview of Windows 9, which will supposedly release next year, the company has already sent out invites to its event on the 30th of September.

For those of you who plan to stick to Windows 7 for the foreseeable future though, while mainstream support ends at the start of next year, extended support, for small fixes and keeping the OS secure, will last until January 2020.

Microsoft has confirmed that the company will be releasing a “cut-down” version of Windows 8.1 for OEM's. This will allow manufacturers to create cheaper devices for consumers and will help combat competition from open source solutions such as Android, Linux and even Chrome OS.

The cheaper version of Microsoft's OS will be called Windows 8.1 with Bing, it will come with Internet Explorer pre-installed and Bing search turned on by default. However, users will be able to turn these features off after buying a device, which should help combat the possibility of another anti-trust lawsuit.

Windows-8.1-with-Bing

Some of these new OEM devices will also come with Microsoft Office or a one year subscription to Office 365. We might get our first look at Windows 8.1 with Bing at Computex, which is in just a few weeks time, a company blog post suggested:

“The end result is that more people – across consumer and commercial – will have access to an even broader selection of new devices with all the awesomeness that Windows 8.1 provides, and get Office too, all at a really affordable price. Additionally, as reach expands, the opportunity for developers and their apps also increases.”

A lower cost version of Windows has been rumoured for some time and many think that Microsoft needs to lower its high Windows license prices in order to stay competitive. This might be true as Apple is now offering OSX and its software suite for free and open source solutions are also starting to gain traction.

KitGuru Says: This cheaper version of Windows will be limited to OEM's but it's a start. Maybe by the time Windows 9 comes around, licenses will finally be cheaper. Is price a factor that is keeping any of you guys from upgrading to Windows 8?

Across the globe, the major TV producers are on their collective knees. Nope, they're not searching for a remote control under the sofa, they're looking for any way to turn a profit – before they go out of business. With companies like Sony experiencing a share price drop that would scare even an Olympic downhill skier, KitGuru heads to China to see where the profits really lie and consider whether al that margin will be enough to save today's big players.

You only have to plug one of their BluRay players into a TV and try to play a YouTube HD video to see where Sony is running into enormous difficulties. Apple is a pain in the arse when it comes to content control – but even a Flash-player-free iPad seems completely liberated compared to the blank result you get from Sony when it comes to HD on YouTube.

With demand for its TVs plummeting and competition from Samsung et al getting stronger all the time, what future is there for Sony in this market?

One thing is for sure, the profits needed for Sony to survive as a TV manufacturer are unlikely to be in the devices themselves. But where else can you make a serious buck in/around the diminishing number of sets still being sold?

We received an interesting email into the KitGuru HQ email box this afternoon (apparently Xmas means less in the Far East and many are still at their desks). It's from an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer – the people who REALLY make the stuff we buy), promoting its range of TV stand/bracket solutions.

Before we reveal the price that was offered to us for a stand that could take up to a 62″ TV, let's do a quick bit of research on stands for the Sony Bravia. It's a cool range of TVs, no doubt. Arguably one of the best on the market, so how much for the wall mounting bracket from Sony?

Seems like a competitive price, but how much do these things cost to make?

.
If you want to buy small quantities – without negotiating on price at all – then you can have a wall bracket that has a (near) universal fitting mechanism and built in spirit level for a lot less than you think.

It's possible that Sony now makes more from TV stands than it does from the TVs themselves

Headphones and speakers make a similar amount of margin – and can be sourced from multiple vendors in the Far East. In all of these categories the profits available to ‘brand holders' like Sony are enormous.

If a random email can offer $4.61 (£2.85), then it's possible for Sony to drop a stand into someone like Dabs – and sell it for a profit – at something like £9.99 inc vat, but the actual price is more than 11x that amount. .

But the problem is that in order to sell the accessories – you need to have sold the main product first.

While Sony is still king of the mass-market, pro-quality HD video camera and has some interesting projects coming up with Hassleblad at the serious end of the camera market, it is struggling with the bread and butter business of the Bravia et al.

How serious is the struggle?   Well here's a graph that shows Sony's share price over the last 2 years.

Problems with the secret installation of root kits and the exploding batteries saga haven't helped, but Sony's real problem is that the brand is lacking in 'cool'. A problem shared by Nokia and Microsoft. Wall brackets are profitable, but dull.

KitGuru says: We can't imagine Sony failing as a company, but it needs to rapidly rethink its plans and work to evolve into an organisation that can battle effectively in the 21st century. Making money on TV stands is good business – but Sony needs to stand for more if it is to thrive.
