For £499, the OnePlus 5T looks like it has everything you'd expect from a phone that costs hundreds of pounds more. There's a 6in AMOLED display, Snapdragon 835 processor, dual camera setup, fingerprint scanner and new facial recognition technology. Is the OnePlus 5T as good as it gets for a mid-range smartphone, or is it just too good to be true? Let's find out.

With the OnePlus 5T available in black, white or red variants, I must admit I was somewhat relieved to be sent the black model – a red phone isn't quite my cup of tea. There's also a choice when it comes to RAM and internal storage: the 5T can be had with 6GB RAM/64GB storage, or 8GB RAM/128GB storage, though neither supports microSD cards. I was sent the latter configuration, though the former does save you an extra £50.

Despite launching as a flagship killer, the OnePlus 5 and 5T have both been missing the crucial feature of HD video playback from popular streaming sites. The company is finally set to rectify this, however users will have to mail their device directly to the company for it to work.

Apparently, Google’s Widevine digital rights management (DRM) system is blocking OnePlus from updating devices via the net, with community manager David Y. explaining that devices will need to physically be connected to an authenticated computer to circumvent the problem.

This is all thanks to OnePlus not having enabled support for Widevine Level 1 Encryption on its OnePlus 5 and 5T devices from the get-go, which is used by Netflix, Amazon Video and even Google Play Movies to protect their copyrighted material.

Unfortunately, there is no way to get around this via a software update or by side-loading a ROM, making this oversight particularly painful for users of the OnePlus 5 or 5T. To fix the issue, users will have to relinquish their device for up to 5 days, which is the company’s promised return time-frame. The company has streamlined the process as much as possible, even stating that it will cover the costs of shipping there and back.

OnePlus’ 2016 flagships are also affected by the issue, although the company has not yet revealed whether or not the OnePlus 3 and 3T are covered by the same solution as its updated counterparts. The company has also not commented on whether this problem will be rectified for all future devices being shipped, so proceed with caution when buying a OnePlus device if HD video streaming is a priority.

KitGuru Says: Given that streaming has been popular for years, this seems a little garish in terms of an oversight for something to have been missed during its testing phases. OnePlus knows how to pick itself back up when it stumbles, however, so it’s worth remaining vocal if you are affected by issues and are unhappy with how the company is handling things.

OnePlus launched its latest smartphone yesterday, sporting high-end features for a modest price tag. But while the OnePlus 5T comes with an up-to-date bezel-less design and even Face ID, it notoriously ships without the latest version of its Android operating system.

It’s true that many Android devices out there are vastly behind the times in what operating system they are running, but it becomes all the more curious when the latest of late smartphones release outdated. Currently, the OnePlus 5T runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat, whereas the latest that Google offers on its own Pixel devices among others is Android 8.0.0 Oreo.

The same can be said for its predecessor, but OnePlus 5 and 5T owners need not despair, as the handsets are pegged to receive the update next year. If you want to get your hands on the update earlier, however, there is a beta planned for the OnePlus 5 later this month, while OnePlus 5T owners can opt in by the end of December.

OnePlus isn’t the only company suffering from this unusual omission, as the Razer Phone similarly ships with an earlier version of Android. Both of these companies launched their devices after Google launched Oreo three months ago.

While this could hint to a more fractured Android ecosystem than ever with newer devices not even touting the latest operating system, the cause is likely timing. Most of these devices will have been manufacturer over years, released in time for the holiday period, leaving company hands tied as Google gives its own Pixel range a head start. At the end of the day, it’s all business.

KitGuru Says: It’s very unlikely that OnePlus or especially Razer would purposefully omit such a feature when one is fighting harder for more market share and the other is trying to impress in an already saturated industry. For now, unfortunately, users will have to play the waiting game. Do you feel like you’re missing out without the latest Android OS?

The OnePlus 5T has finally been officially unveiled, with many of the previous rumours unsurprisingly confirmed. Giving the Samsung Galaxy S8 and iPhone X a run for their money, it seems to tout a lot of high-end features below the £450 mark.

Of course, the OnePlus 5T improves many features from its predecessor, from its expected bezel-less design, to its larger 6-inch 1080×2160 AMOLED display at 18:9 aspect ratio. It utilises a broad set of colour calibration options, including sRGB to keep colours popping, while attempting to avoid the controversies of other OLED displays.

Another rumour proven true is the fingerprint scanner changing location to the rear, however if this isn’t to your tastes, OnePlus has you covered with its very own Face Unlock.

Face Unlock is similar to Apple’s iPhone X and its signature Face ID, in which the OnePlus 5T employs the use of 100+ identifiers to scan its user. While it would be nice if this doesn’t fall to the same controversy Apple’s Face ID has, potential users should make sure to set this up under well-lit conditions.

Also similar to Apple is OnePlus’ ‘Sunlight Display’ mode, which acts much in the same was as TrueTone in that it “adapts to harsh light to facilitate a great viewing experience.”

Housed within the new device is a Snapdragon 835 processor, backed by an Adreno 540 GPU, 8GB RAM and allows customers to choose between 54GB or 128GB of internal storage. While OnePlus has proudly kept the 3.5mm headphone jack, it hasn’t made room for a microSD memory card, leaving cloud storage as customer’s only means of expansion.

Being a mid-cycle release, the OnePlus 5T uses the same dual camera setup as its predecessor, featuring 20MP and 16MP respectively. The upgrade comes in the form OnePlus increasing the aperture of its secondary camera to f/1.7, which should allow for better low-lit photography. This paired with the Intelligent Pixel Technology that the company boasts will allow for layered images to merge into one, bringing clarity by reducing coloured noise found in low lighting.

OxygenOS has also been tweaked on the OnePlus 5T to provide better experience to its user. As well as a little more user friendliness, this is particularly angled at faster and more consistent updates, presumably due to the amount of controversy that the company has had to face in recent months.

Prices for the OnePlus 5T start at £449, with O2 taking pre-orders exclusively in the UK ahead of its November 21st release. The company is also offering 12 months of free Xbox Live Gold for those that dive in early, eligible for all purchases before December 6th.

KitGuru Says: That’s a lot of features packed into such a competitively priced device. I’d still advise customers to wait it out a little to see if this turns out like the turbulent launch of the OnePlus 5 and its many, many, subsequent problems, not to mention the OLED and Face ID/Unlock technology being riddled with problems lately. Over the past few weeks, the somewhat official OnePlus 5T has been cropping up in a number of leaks that speculate its launch date and how it will look. This information has begun to fall in line, as the company has announced that pre-orders for the new device will begin next week.

The long-speculated smartphone was confirmed by OnePlus last week, stating that it was retaining a feature many hold dead: the headphone jack. The teased launch date of November 16th has now been affirmed, as the company has said that its new 5T handset will be available in the UK “exclusively” from the O2 network straight after its New York event. Specifically, this is from 5:15pm GMT, with O2 catering to its customers online and over the phone.

This exclusive period will last less than a week, however, with OnePlus taking orders for the device outright on its website from 2pm on November 21st. O2’s exclusivity mimics its partnership with OnePlus over its last release, which is still unavailable on any other network. Unfortunately, this does mean that you’re likely stuck for options if you want the OnePlus 5T in the UK.

Currently, not much is confirmed ahead of the OnePlus 5T’s November 16th launch aside from its slim bezel design and return of the headphone jack. Here’s hoping that the company launch the device at the competitive prices it is known for.

KitGuru Says: The OnePlus 5T will potentially give the aesthetics and some of the functionality of higher end handsets to the mid-range price model if expectations are correct. That being said, UK customers being limited to solely O2 is a bit of a bummer, despite that currently being my network of choice anyway. Will you be picking up the OnePlus 5T?

Since the launch of the iPhone 7, the future of the headphone jack on mobile devices has been up in the air. So far, Apple, Google, HTC, Motorola and even Razer have all begun moving away from the traditional port. Samsung is rumoured to follow suit next year. However, one company that won’t be following the current trend is OnePlus, which plans to stick with the headphone jack for a bit longer.

OnePlus is set to announce its next smartphone within the next few weeks. In the build-up to this, CEO, Pete Lau, wrote on the OnePlus forums explaining his stance on the headphone jack and its future, stating that “for the time being”, the company will be sticking with it.

“In the past, we’ve made some jokes on this subject, but today I wanted to dig deeper into our decision to keep the 3.5 mm headphone jack. Whether it’s in the area of hardware or software, our focus is on producing superior product experiences. Every feature, removed or added, is based on our understanding of user needs. For the time being, we think it’s best to stick with the headphone jack.”

According to Lau, there are two key reasons to keep the headphone jack around. The first is audio quality, as many users deem that wireless earbuds can’t produce the same level of sound quality as a wired pair. The second key reason is simply user freedom. According to a survey conducted by OnePlus, 80 percent of owners make good use of the headphone jack. In the past, the company has contemplated replacing the 3.5mm jack with a second USB-C port for wired headphones but ultimately came to the conclusion that this was not worth the trade-off to user freedom.

His post ends with the following quote: “our goal from the beginning has been to bring better technology to the world. That's why we prioritise the user and make good technology accessible. Sometimes, industry trends go against our core beliefs. This is one of those times when we respectfully disagree on what it means to be courageous. That's why we're proud to announce that we're keeping the headphone jack for the OnePlus 5T.”

KitGuru Says: If you are planning on buying on buying a OnePlus phone this year or next year, then it looks like you can hang on to your wired 3.5mm headphones without fear. The ‘no headphone jack’ trend does seem to be picking up steam but it is good to see a company putting its foot down and sticking with it for the sake of its customers.

Just last week, a leaked image pointed towards a release date for OnePlus’ new smartphone, with the OnePlus 5T expected to launch mid-November. The handset is all but confirmed at this point, with a yet another image giving a more detailed look at the device.

The picture comes from reliable leaker Evan Blass, whose track record projects that the image is likely credible and one of the final designs that OnePlus has settled on. It echoes a lot of the previous leaks, rumours and speculation, housing a slim-bezel design.

Earlier this year, the OnePlus 5 launched with impressive specs to rival that of premium flagships from Samsung, Apple and Google, however it didn’t opt for the bezel-less design that other models adopted. This was apparently due to resources, which has since been rectified with the OnePlus 5T.

Only the top portion of the render is shown here, leaving more left to see when the handset is expected to be unveiled next month. Although it looks quite different from its predecessor, the specifications are expected to remain relatively similar to the OnePlus 5, while changing the fingerprint sensor placement from the front to the back, a larger 18:9 6-inch screen and perhaps a bigger handset would result in a bigger battery.

KitGuru Says: Despite the stumbles on its launch event, OnePlus released the OnePlus 5 as a flagship killer and mostly succeeded, with devices being out of stock on a frequent basis. If the 5T debuts at a modest price point, I can see the same thing happening again. Are you interested in what the 5T is speculated to offer?

Adding to speculation that arose two weeks ago, the next handset from OnePlus could be right around the corner. If true, the new image that’s circulating the web states that the OnePlus 5T is set to go on sale next month, shortly after its launch date set for mid-November.

The image was reported by GizChina.it, which shows the OnePlus 5T off in the same fashion as its predecessor. Both handsets are presented as an Amazon Exclusive in specific markets, lending credibility to the new post, which, if true, means we will get a showcase of the smartphone on November 16th.

It is also suggested that the phone is to hit shelves in the same month, however the exact date has been omitted from the image. This could point to EvLeaks’ previously claimed release date of November 20th, which would mean like the previous 5, the OnePlus 5T would release just a week after its launch event.

So far, no leak or rumour has been confirmed, with the OnePlus 5T expected to minimise its bezels in the official-looking render and follow in the footsteps of the Samsung Galaxy S8 in terms of specifications. This means the possibility of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and up to 8GB of RAM, just like we reported for the OnePlus 5 leaks and rumours.

KitGuru Says: So far, the render is looking like a nice follow up to an already highly in-demand smartphone, if accurate. Do you plan on grabbing yourself a OnePlus 5T if the launch isn’t met with the same criticisms as its predecessor?
