Android updates often take a while to reach third-party handset manufacturers, being kept exclusive to Google’s Pixel range of smartphones. OnePlus seems to be putting an end to this trend, rolling out Android Pie for the OnePlus 6 just 45 days after the update landed.

With the release of Android 8 Oreo in 2017, Google revised how the update process worked by introducing Project Treble. This acts as a vendor interface, allowing manufacturers to update the OS framework without relying on work from silicon manufacturers, which can ultimately slow the process down to a crawl.

While this could be the first sign that Project Treble is working wonders to quell Android fragmentation, the speedy process can also be attributed to an ongoing partnership between Google and third-party manufacturers. It launched its first-ever third-party beta earlier this year, with hopes to push Android out faster than previous generations.

OnePlus’ recent effort helps avoid the same problems some of its previous models had, with its direct predecessor, the OnePlus 5T not receiving the latest update for a good five months. Making further changes, its proprietary OxygenOS has jumped from 5.1.11 to 9.0 in hopes of aligning better with Android’s numbering system.

OxygenOS 9.0 bundles in all of the flagship features of Android 9 Pie, including a new user interface, adaptive battery support, gesture navigation and an improved Do Not Disturb (DND) mode. The rollout was limited to a randomly selected portion of OnePlus 6, however it has seen a steady increase in adoption in the following days.

“The OTA will be received by a limited number of users today and will have a broader rollout in a few days after making sure there are no critical bugs,” writes OnePlus beta program and developer relations guru, Manu J on the OnePlus forums. “Using VPN to download this build might not work as the rollout Is not based on regions and is randomly pushed out to a limited number of devices.”

OnePlus isn’t the first third-party company to receive Android 9 Pie, with Essential getting a leg up on competition thanks to it shipping the stock Android without any alterations akin to OxygenOS. Nokia, OnePlus, Oppo, Sony, Vivo, and Xiaomi are all set to follow OnePlus, all setting personal bests for how quickly they’ve received the final release of an Android update.

KitGuru Says: Fragmentation and slow adoption of Android updates was one of the biggest drawbacks of the platform. Does quicker dissemination of the new update make Android more appealing to you?

Is it still worth it?

The post OnePlus 6 Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
With its bi-yearly release cycle now well established, mid-2018 sees OnePlus release its latest flagship – the OnePlus 6. Things have changed a fair bit since we reviewed the OnePlus 5T earlier this year, with a larger design being the most obvious difference, though improvements have also been made to the internal components and dual camera system. With a slightly higher price of £519 for the 8GB/128GB model, is this a compelling option for those who want flagship specs without the flagship price?

Despite the price increase over the OnePlus 5T, the OnePlus 6 is still considerably cheaper than rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S9+ or Huawei P20 Pro. That is despite the fact it sports Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 845 processor, a huge 8GB of RAM and an AMOLED display – all features we would associate with pricier flagships. The model we are reviewing today is the 8GB/128GB model priced at £519, but you can save £50 by going for the 6GB/64GB SKU which potentially represents even better value.

Ever since face unlock technology has come into play on smartphones, people have been experimenting to see what it takes to bypass the biometric security feature. The OnePlus 6 is the latest victim of this, which has apparently been duped by a printed piece of paper with the registered owner’s face on.

Apple’s tight grip on the supply chain for its Face ID components has forced rival companies to find their own solutions for the face-based biometric security. OnePlus managed to overcome this alongside Chinese security company called SenseTime, however it seems to lack the means for depth sensing and 3D face mapping.

Twitter user @rikvduijn found during his testing that the OnePlus 6’s Face Unlock can be exploited pretty easily, showcasing his friend holding a relatively wide-angled picture of him against the technology for it to unlock moments later. Worse yet, it also works with a black and white image, showing no difference between the two.

OnePlus recognises the problem, and has issued a statement to clarify that Face Unlock was “designed around convenience” rather than security like its rival. While the company “took corresponding measures to optimise its security, we always recommended you use a password/PIN/fingerprint for security,” explains the company.

“For this reason Face Unlock is not enabled for any secure apps such as banking or payments. We’re constantly working to improve all of our technology, including Face Unlock,” concludes a OnePlus representative in its statement.

KitGuru Says: I’d imagine this situation will get better moving into 2019, when the same components that Apple uses becomes available to more manufacturers. For now, choose wisely as to whether Face Unlock is an important feature to be using on your OnePlus 6. Do you use the device’s Face Unlock? Have you experienced any problems?

OnePlus debuted its brand new flagship smartphone last week, turning heads with a plethora of new features. Unfortunately, one function in particular has been causing trouble for OnePlus 6 users, forcing the Chinese smartphone manufacturer to patch out its ‘always on display’ due to battery concerns.

Prior to the launch of the OnePlus 6, the device’s ‘always on display’ feature was enabled by default, built to rival Samsung’s technology by showing the user information about the smartphone such as notifications and battery life without the need to wake the phone from a low-power state. Unfortunately, this option has since been disabled as of the launch day patch due to the battery itself.

“We have an official update from our Technical Team confirming that always on display on OnePlus 6 was removed due to battery saving concern,” explains a OnePlus customer support representative to disgruntled Reddit user Cell_7.

OnePlus has yet to elaborate beyond its battery concerns, prompting many to believe that the flagship device is subject to a bug that causes the seemingly excessive battery drain. Considering the option is greyed out rather than removed outright suggests that the feature might return at some point in the future. In the meantime, users will have to rely on Android’s ‘Ambient Display’ which shows similar pieces of information when the device is lifted.

KitGuru Says: Early adopters of the OnePlus 6 seem more irritated that the company would remove the option in its entirety rather than giving them the option. Does this make you reconsider buying a OnePlus 6?

OnePlus has debuted its OnePlus 6 smartphone, taking another crack at maintaining its reputation as a ‘flagship killer’. With an increased focus on speed and numerous improvements over its predecessor, OnePlus has impressively kept its competitive price point with the new device starting from £469 / €519 / $529.

As expected, the OnePlus 6 houses the divisive notched screen, however the company is keen to emphasise that this has allowed for the size of the device to remain relatively similar to that of its predecessors while giving significantly more screen real estate at 6.28-inches. The traditional navigation bar also seems to be replaced by gestures as the default way of traversing the software.

OnePlus reiterated its stance on the device being much more than a list of specifications, with its OxygenOS allocating more processing power to an application upon launch, ensuring a smoother, uncompromising experience. Regularly used applications will also see priority when using RAM. Gaming Mode has seen a large improvement, now limiting all background processes to ensure that the user’s title of choice runs uninterrupted and lag free.

Face unlock returns after its debut on the OnePlus 5T, unlocking the phone in just 0.4 seconds. The fingerprint scanner also returns on the rear, with OnePlus claiming that the biometric tech unlocks the device in a faster 0.2 seconds.

The OnePlus 6 will also be one of the first devices on the market to receive the Android P preview, which is slated to arrive soon after its official release date.

Under the hood, the OnePlus 6 sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and Adreno 630 GPU, as expected. The device will also start at 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of UFS2.1 storage, ranging up to 8GB of memory in variants of 128GB or 256GB storage. Fast charging returns with its slogan of “a day’s power in half an hour” and the company still hasn’t ridden itself of the headphone jack.

The camera is a point of pride for the OnePlus 6, utilising a 20MP +16MP dual lens placed vertically on the rear for “perfect symmetry.” The company has listened to feedback and implemented OIS as well as EIS. This helps with low light imagery by stabilising the lenses when the device is moved and allowing more light into the sensor to capture more detail with less noise.

Video capture is similarly uncompromising, allowing users to capture at up to 480 frames per second at 720p resolution for a whole minute, retroactively choosing specific moments to edit into slow motion via its new video editor, alongside cropping, adding filters and even music. This can be compromised, with 240fps at 1080p if the user wants higher resolution.

OnePlus has three different versions ready for release, all sporting the company’s new glass design. If being more malleable during production and offering better connectivity wasn’t enough, the use of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 makes the OnePlus 6 just as resilient as previous models, adding daily water resistance while simultaneously giving the popular ceramic feel minus the weight and fragility drawbacks.

Users will be able to get their hands on a glossy Mirror Black version and a matte Midnight Black version during popup events on May 21st, hitting shelves the following day on May 22nd. A limited edition Silk White variant with gold trimmings will land on June 5th for the same price.

The OnePlus 6 starts at £469 / €519 / $529 for 6Gb of RAM and 64GB of storage, with options to upgrade to 8GB RAM with 128GB for £519 / €569 / $579 or 8GB RAM with 256GB of storage for £569 / €619 / $629.

KitGuru Says: It’s brilliant to see OnePlus continue pushing forward with its technology while retaining its competitive edge on pricing. On paper, OnePlus 6 looks to be an impressive device that will surely take on Apple's iPhone head on, however this has yet to be confirmed with hands-on testing. Will you be opting for a OnePlus 6 in the coming months or do you have your eye on another handset?

OnePlus is set to launch its next flagship smartphone in just two days’ time, leaving just enough time for more details to come to light. Over the weekend, the company hinted that the upcoming OnePlus 6 will be the first device to sport an IP68 water resistant rating, and we might have our first glimpse at European pricing.

While current OnePlus devices don’t sport an official IP rating, the company has made sure that its handsets have remained splash resistant. Over the weekend, the official OnePlus Twitter account posted its 5-day countdown with the caption “The rain never bothered us anyway,” suggesting that water resistance is to be a focus on the upcoming OnePlus 6, with it pegged as the company’s first device to rival Apple and Samsung flagships with an official IP68 rating.

Moving onto rumours, SlashLeaks posted more renders of the supposed OnePlus 6, confirming the all-glass design, iPhone X-style notch and vertical dual rear cameras. Alongside the renders, the leaker claims to have the down-low on European pricing, revealing that the handset is set to land on shelves on 22nd May, costing €519 (approx. £460) for the 64GB model, and €569 (approx. £500) for the 128GB version.

Owners of previous handsets will be able to shave some of the price off with trade-in deals, offering OnePlus 5T owners upwards of £205 towards the latest flagship, provided that it is deemed to be in good condition. Similarly preserved earlier models will fetch a little less than this, with OnePlus 3 and 3T owners expected to chip £190 off the OnePlus 6 on launch through trading their device in.

KitGuru Says: Although the new flagship is expected to be the company’s most ambitious handset to date, it is worth remembering that all details are unconfirmed until May 16th, where all will be revealed. That being said, are you interested in the OnePlus 6?

We've been sifting through various OnePlus 6 leaks and rumors over the last several months, but it looks like the end is finally in sight. This week, OnePlus confirmed that it will be launching its next flagship at an event in May.

At 5PM BST on the 16th of May, the OnePlus 6 will be launched at an event in London. Initially, we had anticipated an April 27th launch, as OnePlus has an ‘Avengers Infinity War Special Edition‘ version of this phone coming out. However, it looks like things will actually happen a little later.

Previously, we have heard a few things about the design of the OnePlus 6. It will have a notch like many other Android phones currently hitting the market, it will also feature an all-glass design for the first time, similarly to the Galaxy S9 and the iPhone 8 or iPhone X.

Under the hood, the OnePlus 6 will feature the Snapdragon 845, alongside a maximum of 8GB of RAM. With those specs, it should be one of the fastest Android smartphones on the market so far this year.

KitGuru Says: Most of the details surrounding the OnePlus 6 have already been revealed, but we'll be keeping an eye on the event in May to keep you all updated. Are any of you currently looking to upgrade your phone? Are you thinking about picking up a OnePlus 6?

We already know that the OnePlus 6 is due to launch this summer, with eyes squarely looking at the end of the month thanks to previous promotional material. The company hasn’t stopped there, with its latest promo hinting at quality materials that could rival Apple’s flagship smartphones.

Over on its official Twitter page, OnePlus tweeted out an image verifying that the upcoming smartphone has been “Designed by OnePlus.” This could hint that the company is taking a similar approach to Apple in its design-led focus, however it doesn’t offer much beyond this tidbit of information.

The caption offers a little more insight, stating that the company will be using “new materials.” It’s been rumoured for quite some time that OnePlus would opt for a ceramic backplate and wireless charging, but an interview with CEO Pete Lau reveals that the OnePlus 6 will centre around a “glass design” like many of its competitors.

There could be more than one version of the OnePlus 6, however as Lau notes, the OnePlus 3 dropped its predecessor’s sandstone black design in favour of a metal frame, making it likely that the company will commit to a single direction rather than producing two vastly different versions.

Beyond the confirmation of a glass design, Lau was adamant on pushing the company’s “honest” approach to its designs. Long term readers will sense the irony in this, after the company has previously been caught in less than honest situations, however OnePlus could truly be turning over a new leaf after its OnePlus 5T has been a huge hit without such controversy.

Its launch date is still undisclosed; however, many eyes are still looking towards April 27th after OnePlus has closely tied itself with the release of Avengers: Infinity War. This, alongside Amazon India releasing its opt-in notification system to let users know of the launch closer to the time indicates that we don’t have to wait too much longer at all.

KitGuru Says: An all-glass design wouldn’t be surprising in the least given the current smartphone trend. While OnePlus doesn’t tend to truly innovate within the smartphone scene, it does push highly competitive prices for the performance it offers, which will truly be interesting to see with the release of the OnePlus 6. Would you like the next flagship to sport a glass design or do you prefer the meal frames?

Now that we have the more significant specifications of the OnePlus 6 nailed down, many are looking ahead towards when the smartphone will be released. Currently, it’s expected any time before June 30th, however it could come much sooner if a leaked promotional advertisement has anything to do with things.

It is looking increasingly likely that the OnePlus 6 will launch later this month, with many eyes set on April 27th, the same day that Marvel releases the anticipated sequel to its hit franchise, Avengers: Infinity War.

The connection comes from a 9-second teaser trailer accidentally leaked by the official Facebook page of OnePlus India. The teaser didn’t give much away aside from intertwining the official logos from both OnePlus and the Avengers, ending with the release date of the movie.

Keen eyed viewers managed to grab the footage before it was taken down by the official page, circulating it on YouTube. Further lending to the credibility is OnePlus’ history with Disney, Marvel’s parent company. The two have previously collaborated for the launch of a special edition Star Wars: The Last Jedi OnePlus 5T, only available in India, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

Although it is uncertain what the connection might be between the Avengers and OnePlus, if it follows in the footsteps of previous special editions, it is likely to be limited to specific regions once again.

A launch later this month would correlate well with reviews that are reportedly in the works, thanks to a leaked render sporting the DxOMark Mobile logo in the top corner. The image itself lends credit to all that’s previously been revealed, such as the thin bezels and the divisive notch.

A second leak via CNMO confirms that the smartphone is set to launch in its ordinary black and white variants, while also offering the increasingly commonplace blue option. These renders lend credit to the rumoured dual camera setup that's currently speculated to be 16 MP + 20 MP.

Inside, the company has already confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will house a Snapdragon 845 and up to 8 GB RAM. The price is also expected to remain competitive, as well as offer more options to help entry-level buyers.

KitGuru Says: The rumour certainly tracks well, but it’s worth taking this information with a pinch of salt until the company officially confirms anything. Are you still hung up over the notched design or are you embracing it?

With the OnePlus 6 just around the corner, rumours have been running rampant with the only official confirmed specification being the device’s iPhone X-styled notch. The company has since taken to its website to reveal what customers can expect from the next flagship, confirming much of what we already know.

Detailed on its website under the title ‘Our Pursuit of Burdenless Speed’, the company reveals that the OnePlus 6 will house Qualcomm’s latest commercial mobile processor, the Snapdragon 845, alongside a maximum of 8GB of RAM.

As suggested with the speculated pricing of the devices across all of its variants, the OnePlus 6 will offer an upper end of 256GB of storage, a step up from the OnePlus 5T which was capped at 128GB Although it hasn’t been confirmed, it is believed that the device will also come in a slightly cheaper 128GB version and an entry-level 64GB variant.

Image: Oppo R15, which bears many similarities to the upcoming OnePlus 6.

OnePlus is pushing its marketing in the way of “burdenless speed” in that it wants to reduce the likelihood of the device freezing to just 1/1000 percent, even if it is recording 4K video. Aside from the mention of this ability, it is not yet known at what frame rate the OnePlus 6 will be able to record ultra-high-definition footage at.

With the mention of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which has recently been focusing on its mobile port a lot more, it seems that the OnePlus 6 will be geared towards the influx of demanding games on the portable platform. Aside from the latest commercial processor and a sizeable amount of RAM, it is uncertain as to how the company plans to stand out from the crowd, especially in light of the unique 120Hz display on the Razer Phone.

OnePlus is officially gearing up to announce its next generation flagship smartphone, with a teaser from its official Twitter account beginning the build-up of hype. As usual, the all-but-confirmed OnePlus 6 is expected to feature hardware that rivals that of the best, while rumoured to still maintain its competitive price point.

The teaser focuses on how fast the upcoming device will supposedly be, with the tagline “The Speed You Need” suggesting that it will once again rival top-tier smartphone manufacturers like Apple and Samsung.

Perhaps even more interesting is its rumoured price point, with GizmoChina reporting a cost of 3,299 Yuan (approximately $525, £374, AU$686) for the 64GB version. While conversion might be slightly off in comparison to the to-be-confirmed pricing in international markets, the OnePlus 5T released its own 64GB variant at £449, making the OnePlus 6 potentially more affordable.

Similarly, the 128GB variant of the OnePlus 6 is said to be 3,799 Yuan (approximately $605, £431, AU$790), around £60-70 cheaper than its predecessor. This is thanks to the introduction of a third choice in its maxed out 256GB internal storage model, said to fetch for around 4,399 Yuan (approximately $700, £499, AU$915).

This is no surprise, given that OnePlus is known for packing the best hardware possible, shaving off just the right amount of features to craft a more affordable, price-to-performance based handset. The OnePlus 6 in particular has been reported to house Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 chip, up to 8GB of RAM and the latest in Android’s offering with 8.1 Oreo.

Like other smartphones, the OnePlus 6 will feature an iPhone X-style notch, albeit smaller and with software to ensure users get the most out of their screen real-estate without sacrificing visual media.

Of course, none of this is official but it looks like a confirmation is right around the corner with a reveal expected before the end of the month. Until then, it’s worth taking this information with a pinch of salt.

KitGuru Says: it looks as though OnePlus is keeping with the trend of larger internal storage, but instead of forgoing the lower options, it has crafted a more entry-level variant to be even friendlier towards customer’s bank accounts. Hopefully the final international pricing reflects this and OnePlus manages to keep the crown as ‘Price to Performance King’. Are you looking forward to an upgrade?

It’s long been speculated that, like other upcoming Android smartphones, the OnePlus 6 would feature the divisive notch at the top of its display. Now that the first official image has been released, it has been confirmed that it will carry the notch, but not without some forethought towards the end user.

When Apple built upon Essential’s notch with its iPhone, the company introduced more screen real-estate, but this impeded on photos and videos. The pros, of course, outweighed the cons in that Apple was able to include its high-powered 3D sensor that enables its signature Face ID bio-metric security, but these concerns haven’t been ignored as OnePlus moves forward with the concept.

Image: OnePlus

OnePlus’ Carl Pei told The Verge that the notch will be smaller than that of its competitor, while bigger than the slither on the Essential phone. This is due to the lack of its own 3D sensors, but as Pei explained, the choice of all companies opting for the notch comes from the fact that each one can pack the ambient light sensors, the front-facing camera, the earpiece and in this case, an LED notification light.

The most interesting thing is Pei’s description on how the software will treat the new 19:9 aspect ratio. Firstly, the clock will be moved from the top bar to the left side of the screen. This gives the notification icons more room. Secondly, videos and photographs won’t suffer from the intrusion as the OnePlus 6 will disguise the notch, placing the media below it, mimicking the same curved edges seen on the bottom of the smartphone.

Perhaps enthusiasts just don’t realise the benefits just yet, as OnePlus observed the discontent within the crowd at the Mobile World Congress as notched device after notched device was unveiled. The company, however, insists that this is the most logical direction regardless of public opinion.

KitGuru Says: It looks like the OnePlus 6 will take after the Oppo R15 after all, which is no surprise given that they are cousins from the same head company. Are you happy with the notch and how OnePlus is going about improving on user concerns?

OnePlus fans have already been treated to many leaks and rumours, suggesting that the company will run with an iPhone X-style notch on its next flagship. Now, with the release of the Oppo R15, we have our first full look at what the OnePlus 6 might look like.

Given that the two companies share the same ownership, OnePlus often takes after Oppo in its designs. The OnePlus 5 was almost identical to the Oppo R11, whereas the OnePlus 5T is uncanny to the previously released Oppo R11S. This makes the Oppo R15 our best look yet into what the OnePlus 6 might end up looking like.

2018 has no shortage of iPhone X clones, with many Android-based manufacturers adopting the trend. The Oppo R15 is one of them, sporting a smaller notch than its Apple counterpart, which is also expected to appear on the OnePlus 6 considering the rumoured 19:9 aspect ratio.

The Oppo R15 itself sports a 6.28-inch, 2280 x 1080 OLED panel, with bezels that aren’t quite as slim as the iPhone X. It holds a 3,450mAh battery, a MediaTek Helio P60 processor, with 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage for $475 in the US.

There is a “Dream Mirror Edition” variant that comes in a little more expensive at around $520, swapping out the MediaTek Helio P60 processor for a Snapdragon 660 processor, replacing the body with ceramic casing and opting for a 16 and 20-megapixel combination for its rear dual camera instead of the standard 12 and 5-megapixel.

Of course, the OnePlus 6 will likely build upon this so it isn’t a carbon copy, and the parts that will be changed remains to be seen. The upcoming flagship is set to arrive a little later this year, but it is looking more and more certain that it will carry the divisive notch.

KitGuru Says: The specs aren’t too bad for the price, although it's likely that the components for the OnePlus 6 will differ greatly. Usually, the company contends with the best while managing to keep its prices relatively low in comparison. How do you feel about the notch? Will you be opting for the OnePlus 6 if it carries the same design as the Oppo R15?

Ahead of OnePlus unveiling its next flagship smartphone, we’ve learned that the device will more than likely carry a bezel-less display with an iPhone X-style notch at the top. Further driving the nail in the coffin is newly revealed OxygenOS code that shows that the divisive feature is definitely on the cards.

OnePlus released its first Android 8.1 Oreo build for its latest device, the OnePlus 5T, packing it inside its own OxygenOS Open Beta 4 update. Most third parties build upon the vanilla Android operating system, adding their own features and flavours, which is what OnePlus does with its OxygenOS.

XDA-Developers delved further into the firmware, discovering references to “enchilada,” which is expected to be the codename for the OnePlus 6 smartphone. One image in particular bears the title “screendecor_up_img_enchilada_1,” which XDA claims represents an overlay to test specific applications that house the iPhone X-style notch.

This type of code has been seen previously on Huawei’s upcoming flagship P20 smartphone, which has many leaks of its own suggesting that it will carry the same style notch. This has yet to receive any official confirmation, however, so readers should take OnePlus 6 and Huawei P20 news with a pinch of salt until officially announced by the respective manufacturers.

KitGuru Says: Like it or not, the notch makes sense given the push into bezel-less screens. Until development teams figure out how to successfully place all of the front-facing technology, such as the camera, behind the screen without sacrificing quality, it looks like the notch is the next best thing. How do you feel about many of the smartphones adopting the notch?

It seems that claims of the OnePlus 6 potentially following in the footsteps of the iPhone X with its notched bezel-less screen might have some truth in them, as a leaked benchmark shows the device’s 19:9 aspect ratio. It also reveals that the upcoming flagship smartphone will continue the company’s trend in housing the latest chipset.

First published on Android Central under the code-name A6000, the reveal of its 19:9 aspect ratio marks an increase from the OnePlus 5T’s 18:9 display. The extra space is likely to push further up towards the top of the device, lending credibility to its bezel-less design, albeit obscured by the small notch containing the front-facing camera and sensors.

The AnTuTu benchmark details a CPU score of 95,722 and an overall score of 276,510, which bests the previous record held by Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 2S, expected to release later this month. Like the Mi Mix 2S, this implies that the OnePlus 6 will be running Qualcomm’s latest chipset, the Snapdragon 845.

Even without explicitly stating that the Snapdragon 845 is the processor in question, OnePlus CEO Pete Launched has said previously that “there’s no other choice” when asked if the successor to the OnePlus 5T would house Qualcomm’s latest offering.

OnePlus has yet to officially confirm any of the recent leaks, so take this information with a pinch of salt. Official reveals should start taking place in the run up to its expected June reveal.

KitGuru Says: I am still not sure how I feel about the notch, but if OnePlus manages to retain its competitive pricing, it will still have a potential flagship killer on its hands. Are you excited for the OnePlus 6?

Asus revealed yesterday that it would be continuing the notched trend set by Apple’s iPhone X within its new Zenfone 5 and 5Z, claiming that it’s what users want. Just hours later, images began circulating of an alleged OnePlus 6 handset, showing that the Chinese manufacturer would also potentially be following suit.

Although OnePlus has yet to officially reveal its OnePlus 6 flagship smartphone, ITHome managed to obtain two leaked pictures of the supposed handset, with the logo emblazoned on the back. As is the trend with handsets, the device features a bezel-less display as well as the infamous, yet apparently in-demand notch housing the front-facing camera and earpiece.

The display shown in the leak also reveals more information on what to expect from the upcoming device, which will reportedly run Android 8.1 with 6GB Ram and 64GB internal storage. Although this seems lacklustre in comparison to the company’s last release with the OnePlus 5T, given that the intermediary upgrade ran with 8GB RAM and double the internal storage, this is in line with previous reports which stated that there might be more than one model.

Alongside the variants in RAM and storage, we’d previously heard that the OnePlus 6 would feature a 6-inch QuadHD display with minimal bezels, correlating with the idea that the fingerprint censor would be moved to the rear, as seen on the leaked image above. It also seems that the manufacturer has opted to run with a glass chassis instead of the metal seen on the back of the OnePlus 5T.

So far, the only confirmed element of the tentatively titled OnePlus 6 is that the handset will pack Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 processor.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed that the successor to the OnePlus 5 and 5T is set to be revealed in “late Q2 2018” in an interview with CNET. Luckily for residents in the US, the company is making extra effort to talk with carriers to ensure a smoother release in the region.

KitGuru Says: Take this information with a pinch of salt, as so far nothing is confirmed aside from the successor’s processor. Hopefully the OnePlus 6 lives up to its predecessors in terms of price to performance ration in the ever-costly world of smartphones. Are you looking forward to the OnePlus 6? Does the prospect of a notch put you off?

Despite benchmark controversies and bugs in the early stages after release, the OnePlus 5 proved to be a relatively impressive handset. Rumour has it that the company is likely to ditch its usual incremental model, dropping the 5T in favour of the OnePlus 6 set to release early next year.

Hearing from “reliable sources,” Android Marvel reports that OnePlus is set to shake up its release schedule, introducing its next flagship handset to compete with the high-end market in early 2018. This is a change in direction, with the Chinese manufacturer maintaining reasonable prices on its devices while maintaining specifications to compete with the higher end market.

The ditching of the rumoured OnePlus 5T is likely due to Qualcomm not scheduled to release a new chipset until next year, prompting the possibility of the company waiting so that it’s next launch is a significant one.

OnePlus 6 concept design by TechConfigurations

This has perpetuated rumours that the OnePlus 6 will feature a Snapdragon 845 processor, alongside its first attempt at an all-screen design on a 6-inch QuadHD display, between 6 and 8GB of RAM and its usual storage options of 64/128GB with the added ability to continue using microSD cards.

If the bezel-less screen is to be believed, this would result in a slight redesign to OnePlus phones as we know them, resulting in the fingerprint censor being moved to the rear similar to that of the Pixel. If the company wishes to maintain its competitive pricing, it is not likely to feature an under-display scanner, but only time will tell.

Currently details such as pricing and a concrete launch date are a little thin, but the handset is pegged to be revealed early in 2018.

KitGuru Says: If the company manages to maintain competitive pricing while still competing in the high-end market, it is likely to have a hit on its hands. What are your experiences with the OnePlus handsets? Will you be upgrading next year?
