October has proved to be one of the most jam-packed months for smartphones, with a variety of options coming from Google’s new Pixel 3 line, Huawei’s Mate 20 range and the Razer Phone 2. This was capped off with the launch of the latest “flagship killing” OnePlus 6T, which US carriers have now begun listing for sale.

As the leaks suggested, the OnePlus 6T features a frameless 6.41-inch AMOLED display at 1080 x 2340 resolution. Its large 85.6 percent screen-to-body ratio is largely thanks to the 16MP teardrop front-facing camera, while its rear dual lens setup supports optical stabilisation across its 16MP + 20MP cameras.

Under the glass hood sits Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor and an Adreno 630 GPU powered by a sizeable 3,700mAh battery. Consumers have the choice between 6GB and 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB storage. Also underneath is the fingerprint sensor, which now sits beneath the display.

OnePlus has made a range of new improvements to its software, packing in the latest Android 9 Pie and its proprietary Oxygen OS. Big advancements can be seen in the camera software in particular, packing in new de-noise algorithms and a night mode for better low-light photography.

Although the price has seen a small bump when compared with its predecessors, the OnePlus 6T still remains competitively priced. For $549, consumers can grab the OnePlus 6T with 128GB of storage and 6GB RAM, while $579 amps up the RAM to 8GB. The full whack of 256GB of storage and 8GB RAM will set users back $629, directly from the official website.

US buyers can now jump in with T-Mobile, the first carrier in the States to include OnePlus within its 24.17-per-month plan for two years. Verizon has also confirmed that the network is entirely compatible despite not officially debuting as a retail partner for the new device.

UK residents can buy the device starting from £499, with a number of carriers housing a variety of plans to choose from. Devices are expected to ship by the 5th, however this varies per carrier and per country.

KitGuru Says: There will be some compromises to note on the OnePlus 6T, but it seems to be impressing reviewers as usual. Without any controversies in sight this time around, it looks as though the firm is onto a winner.

While Android continues to flourish as a diverse market, one of the biggest complaints is how manufacturers bloat Google’s base operating system. Although OnePlus has always embraced pure Android, it teased that a more streamlined experience is coming to its proprietary OxygenOS in time for the OnePlus 6T.

Based on Android 9 Pie, OnePlus’ upcoming OxygenOS is set to deliver a brand new user interface (UI). Although the firm emphasises that users will have to experience it first-hand to truly understand what’s currently in the works, OnePlus owners can expect a “fast, smooth & burden-less experience with no gimmicks.”

Details are relatively scarce on what the update will include beyond this, however OnePlus’ “Fast, Smooth, and Efficient” team, known internally as FSE, have been working on new features such as a Do not Disturb mode and fresh Navigation Gestures. The latter is supposedly designed to work faster by allowing the user to quick flick between the latest two applications used and Google Assistant.

Overall, OxygenOS will become more in-tune with the hardware of its smartphones, particularly in the way of the 6T’s new and improved camera. “We've put a lot of work into improving the camera behind the scenes, so you can expect to take even better pictures,” states the blog post. Unfortunately, the company can’t reveal” exactly what was improved, although UI and potentially AI support is rumoured.

More information is expected to come to light when the OnePlus 6T launched later this month, on October 30th.

KitGuru Says: Personally, pure Android on Google’s Pixel range has been the best mobile OS experience in my books. It’s good to see companies taking a step back from the bloatware and focusing on a more energy efficient, smoother approach. What do you think of OnePlus’ efforts on OxygenOS? What has been your favourite mobile OS so far?

A whole host of flagship smartphones are launching this month, with Google’s Pixel 3 line-up arriving on the 9th and Huawei shortly following on the 16th. Price to performance king OnePlus has announced that it will also be joining the fray, unveiling its OnePlus 6T on the 30th.

Aesthetically, the OnePlus 6T is expected to follow in the footsteps of Oppo’s F9 and R17 handsets, sporting a teardrop notch for its single front-facing camera. Leaks suggest that this will be capable of utilising OnePlus’ facial recognition technology, dubbed Face Unlock, while the fingerprint sensor has been relocated to beneath the screen for its Screen Unlock feature.

The smaller notch also allows for a bigger 91.6 percent screen-to-body ratio across what is believed to be a 6.4-inch 2340×1080 AMOLED screen, powered by a Snapdragon 845 and Adreno 630. Controversially, the OnePlus 6T will be the first of the company’s devices to forgo a 3.5mm headphone jack, much to the disapproval of fans.

Users should be able to “Unlock the Speed” on October 30th at 11am Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), where the Chinese company will unveil the device in New York City.

KitGuru Says: OnePlus has been the leader of price to performance for quite some time, but it remains to be seen whether the OnePlus 6T can maintain a competitive price point. Is there anything you would like to see revealed about the OnePlus 6T? How much would you be willing to pay for up-to-date flagship features?

While the OnePlus 6T is expected to carry a similar price to performance to its predecessors, the smartphone is set to be a divisive iterative upgrade being the first in the firm’s line-up to drop the 3.5mm headphone jack. Now, an incredibly official-looking render gives us our first look into what a OnePlus flagship looks like without the legacy technology.

Serial smartphone leaker OnLeaks has an outstanding track record regarding the authenticity of his material ahead of official announcements, teaming up with MySmartPrice to share a 360-degree render video of what the OnePlus 6T is expected to look like. Every angle is reminiscent of Oppo’s edge-to-edge water drop notched design featured on the F9 and R17, protruding onto a 6.4in 1080×2340 resolution Optic AMOLED display.

There is a distinct lack of a physical fingerprint sensor, corroborating rumours that OnePlus has moved its biometric security underneath the screen. Of course, no 3.5mm headphone jack can be seen on the underside, which is to be expected after OnePlus announced it would finally be ditching the aging technology – much to the displeasure of some fans.

The newest leak claims that the OnePlus 6T will be slightly thicker than its predecessor, coming in at 8.2mm thick. Under the hood sits a 2.8GHz Snapdragon 845 CPU and an Adreno 630 GPU, with the option to choose between 6GB or 8GB RAM and 64GB and 128GB storage models. The rear camera is positioned vertically, an increasingly popular choice, with a 16MP primary and 20MP secondary lens.

Nothing is official just yet, however, so readers are advised to take this with a pinch of salt until its October 17th launch date.

KitGuru Says: While it’s a shame that the 3.5mm headphone jack will no longer be featured, there will be an adapter provided within the box to make use of any compatible pair of headphones. What do you think of the supposed look of the OnePlus 6T?

Earlier this week, we got a closer look at the rumoured specifications of the upcoming OnePlus 6T, speculating camera tweaks, storage options and the firm’s “light-sensitive fingerprint sensor under the display.” It seems that the firm will also be giving up the headphone jack moving forward, however co-founder Carl Pei has revealed that this might have made way for a bigger battery.

Pei spoke with TechRadar about the controversial decision of ditching the aging technology, stating that it’s not about “putting every component available” into a newly design device. Rather, it is about optimisation of the user experience, which has increasingly seen 3.5mm technology dwindle. With the launch of the OnePlus 6T, it seems that only Samsung and LG remain, and there’s no guarantee that the former’s tentatively titled Galaxy S10 will harbour the tech.

“We also had to think about the negative side [of removing the headphone jack] for our users. We found 59% of our community already owned wireless headphones earlier this year – and that was before we launched our Bullets Wireless headphones,” explains Pei. It’s not clear just how many more people Pei expects to have jumped on the bandwagon after the launch of its Bullets Wireless headphones, but he reassures wired fans that they’ve not been forgotten.

Those wishing to keep using wired headphones will instead be provided with an adapter to allow the use of 3.5mm devices. Alternatively, USB-C-based headphones will be compatible, as OnePlus prepares its Bullets V2 with a wired connection.

“We're not doing it for the sake of doing it and because everyone else is. We believe now is the right time, as it'll benefit the majority of our users while keeping the downside low,” Pei said. “By removing the jack we've freed up more space, allowing us to put more new technology into the product. One of the big things is something our users have asked us for, improved battery life.”

This won't necessarily quell the traditional backlash we're used to seeing when a company decides to go in a different direction, particularly in the case of a company that has repeatedly used the headphone jack as a primary source of marketing since 2016. Hopefully the extra bells and whistles will prove to be worth the controversial move.

KitGuru Says: The annoying thing for wired enthusiasts is the need to take up the only port on a device, resulting in the inability to charge as well as listen. With the increased adoption of power banks to counter diminishing battery life, this becomes a problem. Hopefully the size increase of the OnePlus 6T’s battery is substantial enough to quell worries. How do you feel about the removal of the headphone jack?

The kings of price to performance are set to return once more with OnePlus rumoured to launch its brand new handset in October. As usual, leakers are determined to make sure there are no surprises in store for the unveiling, revealing much of what to expect from the OnePlus 6T.

Chinese e-commerce website GizTop lifted the lid on the OnePlus 6T, prompting fans to look forward to a 6.4in 2340×1080 AMOLED screen with a relatively generous 91.6 per cent screen-to-body ratio. The processor and graphics chips are set to the stay the same as its predecessor, with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 and Adreno 630.

Strangely, the leak suggests that the OnePlus 6T will be dropping its 16MP main camera for a 12MP lens instead, while the 20MP sensor remains the same with TOF 3D. The front-facing camera, however, will supposedly be taking a whopping step up from 16MP to 25MP. There will reportedly be different models, including 6GB and 8GB of RAM split between 64GB, 128GB and 256GB of storage.

Google’s latest Android 9.0 Pie has a mention, prompting thoughts that the OnePlus 6T might ship with the update pre-installed rather than the user having to manually download it. And finally, the website corroborated the rumours that the device will come with a “light-sensitive fingerprint sensor under the display.”

OnePlus’ in-display fingerprint scanner began doing the rounds earlier this week, following the Vivo Plus UD and the Huawei Mate RS. OnePlus has dubbed its fingerprint-on-display (FOD) “Screen Unlock,” according to CNET, presumably to mimic Apple’s Face Unlock in branding.

“We unlock our phones multiple times a day, and Screen Unlock reduces the number of steps to complete the action,” OnePlus revealed to CNET. “By adding this feature as an addition to other display unlocking options such as Face Unlock, users will have options to unlock the display in a way that is most efficient for them.”

All of these features are said to be packed into the OnePlus 6T for $569 (£440), however this price point, like the other unverified rumours throughout this article, should be taken with a pinch of salt.

KitGuru Says: OnePlus always manages to impress on the price front, even if costs are steadily increasing within the smartphone market. Are you happy with what you see with the rumoured specifications of the OnePlus 6T or would you like to see something else?
