Details of Ubisoft’s next season have been trickling in throughout the past few months, with the publisher giving Operation Grim Sky a full reveal during its Paris Major over the weekend. Introducing shielded defender Clash and the blowtorch wielding Maverick, the meta looks set to drop rush tactics in favour of strategy and angles.

Ex-Scotland Yard officer, Clash is the first defender to wield an indestructible shield, much like Montagne’s on attack. She forgoes the ability to melee while retaining a battery-operated shock attack that slows enemies and causes damage similar to Lesion’s Gu Mines. While she’s certainly meant to slow the enemy team’s rush, she cannot arbitrarily block doorways as one melee hit or Zofia’s concussion grenades temporarily knock her defences, allowing attackers to get a shot off.

Maverick is the game’s third hard breacher, utilising his blowtorch to cut holes “at an almost inaudible level” in comparison to the sizeable holes made by Thermite and Hibana. Instead, Maverick has a limited amount of fuel to his device that is best used to create sneaky angles, passageways for the Twitch drone or a trap with his claymore poking through, rather than something operators can pass through.

Of course, Maverick can blow up hatches, but only at the expense of a lot of his fuel. This comes hand in hand with changes to how the hatches work, now requiring 6 of Hibana’s X-KIAROS pellets to fully breach, otherwise holes similar to Maverick’s will be made for vertical angles. Other changes include weapon sight adjustments to combat misalignment, the introduction of an Idle Pick Operator for when someone is distracted or AFK, and the comprehensive Hereford Base rework taking players back to World War 2.

Operation Grim Sky lands on the Technical Test Server today, August 20th, exclusive to PC players. The live servers, including console, will gain access to the new season early in September providing tests go smoothly.

KitGuru Says: Ubisoft has wanted players to slow down and play methodically for quite some time, but the introduction of bigger maps has prompted better players to enter the building as quickly as possible rather than wasting time. It’s good to see another potential meta change to alleviate the pain of rushing, but it looks like Maverick is going to spur defenders to roam even more than before in order to counter him.

Despite a full reveal set to coincide with the Paris Major Championship later this week, Rainbow Six Siege players can feast their eyes on Operation Grim Sky’s new defender, Clash thanks to a leak. Coinciding with the finals, Ubisoft will also be offering another free weekend, including everything seen in the full version of the game.

Clash’s new teaser trailer shows the British riot officer extending her transparent shield much like Montagne does on attack, covering her front while curving around her flank to prevent shots from the side or above. Two charges of electricity can be seen either side of Clash’s head before she zaps them forward, prompting thoughts of Twitch and Maestro, ending the teaser by saying “this is where you stop.”

There’s still much to speculate about Clash’s gadget, with many believing she will have to be stationary when fully extended in order to user her electricity. The glass panelling is also a point of conversation, prompting thoughts of Blackbeard and Tachanka’s breakable glass shielding rather than Mira’s entirely bulletproof window. Her weapon loadout is still unknown, but will be revealed alongside the American attacker and new Hereford Base rework over the weekend.

Starting from Thursday 16th August, Ubisoft will be offering Siege up in a free weekend, lasting until Monday 20th across all platforms. Pre-loading begins on PC starting on Tuesday 14th, despite getting access the latest of the trio at 6pm BST. Xbox One players will be able to hop in first at 8am, while PlayStation 4 players will have to wait until 2pm on the day. “All of the maps, modes, and Operators present in the full version,” and players that choose to purchase the title after the duration will see their progress carried over.

KitGuru Says: I am not too sure how I feel about the speculations surrounding Clash just yet, but I’m sure the attacker will change up the meta more if he proves to be the hard breacher rumours state. Still, Hereford Base will likely be the most exciting point for me. Will you be hopping onto Siege over the weekend?

Following Ubisoft’s initial reveal for Operation Grim Sky, Rainbow Six Siege players have been treated to a trailer touring the brand new Hereford Base map rework. Players are warped back in time, as the developers have replaced the bland modern setting with a nostalgic World War II theme for the iconic training ground.

Hereford Base has always been a map with questionable competitive viability, seeing virtually no exposure in the ESL rotation. Ubisoft decided to remove the map from Ranked play in September 2017, an action that received a lot of backlash until it was revealed during the Invitational 2018 that it would be the first map to receive a comprehensive from-the-ground-up overhaul.

Dubbed as a “rework” this is much more than the map buff that Club House received at the start of Operation Para Bellum. The new Hereford Base is intended to be “one of the most competitive environments” in Rainbow Six Siege, comparable to that of newer maps developed by a new team that was introduced at the end of Year 1.

Previously a cramped building with just one set of stairs acting as a rotation for the top two floors, not counting the outside set that is a considerable risk for defenders to utilise, it looks as though Ubisoft has expanded the map with added buildings on its surrounding. It’s not confirmed to what extent these places will be accessible just yet, but it looks like this will be a lot more roamer friendly than the narrow corridors we were previously used to.

Ubisoft will introduce the new Hereford Base formally during an August 19th presentation on Twitch, hitting the Technical Test Servers (TTS) before joining rotation as a part of Year 3, Season 3: Operations Grim Sky.

KitGuru Says: As a long-term player, I think that Siege has improved the competitive quality of its maps tenfold in comparison to those that were available on release. Border still remains my favourite for its simplistic box-shaped building but I can’t help but be excited for the new Hereford Base. What do you think of the trailer?

Operation Para Bellum is slowly but surely coming to a close, as Ubisoft has begun teasing details surrounding its next lot of content for Rainbow Six Siege. Titled Operation Grim Sky, this will be the first time in over a year that the developer has returned to a traditional seasonal update with one attacker and one defender, as well as its first ever map rework.

Both new operators will act as Rainbow’s Urban Tactical Response Team, codenamed Grim Sky (GSUTR). While their names have yet to be revealed, they can easily be distinguished as a Brit and an American, with Ubisoft sharing parts of their history with us.

The Brit is a defender, described as “a tough police officer who’s an expert on mob behavior and snatch-squad tactics,” meant to extract a single perp out of a mob of people. According to the image, she’s equipped with some form of riot shield that’s mostly transparent and with two shimmering lights on its front.

While it’s unclear what her shield might be used for, speculation has split people down the middle. Some fans believe she will act much like Blitz and Montagne do on attack, perhaps with a special ability we don’t yet know of, while others think her shield might be deployable with a built-in electric element. The latter lines up with leaks that date back to May of a “hole blocker” which has sat alongside code that indicates there will also be an “audio alarm” in the game at some point.

The American attacker is “a specialist with a remarkably sharp mind when it comes to tactical operations,” known for his “surgical precision.” Within the image, he is seen holding the long-rumour blow torch also found within the game’s code. This is believed to be the highly anticipated third hard breach operator, firmly distinguished from Thermite’s Exothermic Charges and Hibana’s X-KAIROS Pellets.

While this sparks a return to normal, after Operation Health gave us no new operators, both Blood Orchid and White Noise gave us three, and both Chimera and Para Bellum gave us two attackers then two defenders respectively, the map will not be a new addition. Instead, Ubisoft will be debuting its first full map rework from the ground up: Hereford Base. Notable among the changes is a shift from its contemporary design to a WWII theme, but the most exciting thing is it becoming viable for competitive play. This means we should see Hereford Base return to Ranked, and possibly see it within ESL’s map pool.

Lastly, Siege players will finally be getting the new recoil system that’s been trialled for the past year in order to quell misalignment issues. There’s undoubtedly more behind Operation Grim Sky, that we will likely find out through leaks in the run up to its official unveiling during the Paris Major from August 17th to 19th.

KitGuru Says: It’ll be interesting to see just how meta changing these two new operators are. The potential of a new, unique hard breacher is always welcome given just how big of an addition Hibana was in Red Crow. What do you think of the new operators so far? What would you like to see from Grim Sky?
