The next generation of Netgear Orbi has arrived. The new Orbi 970 series aims to futureproof networks, making the jump to the WiFi 7 standard to support massive speeds for many devices simultaneously.

Building on the foundation of WiFi 6E, WiFi 7 expands channels to 320MHz. The Orbi 970 Series harnesses this power to ensure seamless connectivity throughout your home, supporting all devices simultaneously. This is achieved with several key features, including a 10 Gig internet port, combined with 10Gbps and 2.5Gbps ethernet ports. Quad-Band technology and an enhanced backhaul should maintain uninterrupted high-speed WiFi throughout your home, and Smart Connect will automatically put you in the fastest WiFi band for each connected device.

The Orbi 970 is protected with Netgear Armor, which is powered by Bitdefender, one of the more popular anti-virus solutions currently available. Users will also have access to easily manageable parental controls to track or place restrictions on online activity. The basic features are free, but a premium subscription is also available.

The Orbi comes as a two pack with one satellite (Orbi RBE972), or alternatively, for those needing expanded coverage, as a three pack with two satellites (Orbi RBE973) which blankets up to 8,200 sq.ft. – 10% more than the previous model – and supports up to 200 devices. Additional satellites can be added to extend coverage further, each equipped with high-speed Ethernet ports.

A package included 1 year of Netgear Armor, as well as the Orbi with two satellites, is available to pre-order now, priced at £2,199.99. Pricing for the 2-pack bundle and pricing for individual satellites is still TBC.

Netgear recently introduced a new device to its Orbi lineup, with the Orbi 970 series routers. Featuring a strong new antenna design and WiFi 7 support, Netgear claims the Orbi 970 is able to provide exceptional performance in 360-degree coverage throughout almost any house, regardless of layout.

With faster internet speeds now available to more households, more connected devices, and an increase in bandwidth-intensive applications, wireless networks need more capacity, lower latency, and support for higher speeds. That's where WiFi 7 comes in. Built upon the WiFi 6E protocol, WiFi 7 expands the channels to 320 MHz, increasing speeds and performance. The Orbi 970 Series capitalises on the new standard, guaranteeing that the benefits that come with WiFi 7 are spread within your house, from the front door to the backyard, across all devices at the same time.

To guarantee that WiFi remains fast across all devices, Netgear has implemented two of its own technologies: Quad-Band and Enhanced Dedicated Backhaul. The latter is the result of configuring multi-link operation (MLO), a WiFi 7 feature, to combine 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands to create a 10 Gig wireless backhaul offering reduced latency and high data delivery speeds. Moreover, Smart Connect, another feature of the system, automatically picks the quickest WiFi band for each connected device.

To attain the greatest wireless speeds possible today, the router has a 10 Gig internet connection as well as one 10 Gig and four 2.5 Gig Ethernet ports. The routers and satellites' sleek and cylindrical forms are carefully intended for best performance while looking good in your house. Each includes 12 high-performance internal antennas with high-powered amplifiers for 360-degree coverage.

According to Netgear, new Orbi 970 Series mesh system (three-pack) can cover up to 8,200 square feet and can accommodate up to 200 devices. Extra satellite(s) may be installed to increase coverage. Each add-on satellite expands the coverage of an existing Orbi 970 system by up to 2,700 square feet and includes one 10 Gig and two 2.5 Gig Ethernet connectors, enabling genuine multi-gig WiFi.

With the NETGEAR Orbi app, the setup process is quick and easy. In addition, the app also allows users to administer their network remotely. Another important feature on the Orbi 970 series is Netgear Smart Parental Controls, which allow you to control your children's online time across all of their connected devices and encourage healthy online behaviours for the whole family. The basic functionalities are accessible for free, but there's also a premium plan that unlocks extra features.

The Netgear Orbi 970 series is now available in white and black (a limited edition only available on netgear.com). The RBE973S three-pack (router and two satellites) is priced at £2,199.99/$2299.99, and the RBE972S two-pack (router and a satellite) goes for £1,599.99/$1699.99. Both include one year of Netgear Armor service. A single satellite (RBE970) can also be acquired for £799.9/$899.9.

Over the last year, working and learning from home has boosted internet traffic dramatically, leading to +38% downstream and +56% upstream usage. With all of that extra load to deal with, upgraded WiFi systems are becoming more of a necessity. This is where the new Netgear Orbi Quad-Band Mesh WiFi 6E comes in, offering huge gains in capacity and speeds.

Today, Netgear is launching the Orbi Quad-Band Mesh WiFi 6E –  the industry’s first quad-band WiFi 6E Mesh system. The 6GHz band offers two times the capacity over 5GHz, and combined WiFi speeds can reach up to 10.8Gb per second. In addition to the best WiFi speeds, ethernet has been increased to 10Gb, creating a futureproof solution for in-home and business connectivity.

The Orbi Router is joined by Orbi Satellite access points with a dedicated backhaul, providing multi-gigabit internet throughout the home. The connection between the router and each access point is not shared, removing potential interruptions to traffic. This also reduces the number of steps the connection needs to get through to a device.

Orbi’s 6GHz band allows up to seven 160MHz channels, ensuring throughput in crowded environments. 5GHz routers only have one clean 160MHz channel, so crowded environments, such as neighbourhoods, result in performance drops. The new Orbi Quad-band Mesh WiFi 6E system also touts 16 streams of 4×4 WiFi on every band.

Thanks to a new design changes to the WiFi radio and dipole antenna, 5GHz WiFi also sees significant improvements, with up to 30 percent better coverage. The new router also comes equipped with a 10G ethernet port, and a 2.5G ethernet port, followed by an additional three 1G ethernet ports. Netgear's research shows that many users like to use ethernet connections whenever possible, so they have doubled down and included a lot of them. Not only does the router have high-speed ethernet ports, but each Orbi satellite also includes multiple ethernet ports, allowing them to be placed more centrally throughout the home. With a router and three satellites, you'll have 12 ethernet ports to work with.

There are four separate WiFi networks to choose from when connecting devices – Home Mesh, WiFi 6E, IoT WiFi and a guest network. With this, you can separate legacy and IoT devices for efficient bandwidth use, so smart home products can have their own dedicated network, while your PCs, phones, consoles etc are connected to their own network.

All of the specifications and design decisions for this new Orbi Mesh system have been made with futureproofing in mind, Netgear has also ensured that setup and installation is easy through the Orbi App, which can be used to monitor the network map, speeds, connected devices and adjust security settings from a smartphone or tablet. Smart parental controls are also in place so you can set up specific rules, such as total internet time allowed on a per day basis. There is also the option to subscribe to Netgear Armor, which provides additional security tools and a built-in VPN.

The Orbi Quad-Band Mesh WiFi 6E will be available soon in two bundles. The router and two satellites will cover 9000 sq. ft and is priced at £1499, while the router and one satellite covers 6000 sq. ft and costs £1099. For the first time, there will also be a limited Orbi Black Edition, marking the first time that an Orbi WiFi setup has been available in a black colour scheme.

IFA 2019 has been very busy so far but we're not done with our coverage just yet. This week, Leo had the chance to stop by at NETGEAR's area to check out the all-new WiFi 6 wireless routers and a new peculiar digital canvas.

NETGEAR launched its first Orbi Whole Home WiFi Mesh System back in 2016 and this week, we are seeing the next evolution with the Orbi WiFi 6. It has four times the network capacity of 802.11ac, solving high traffic bandwidth issues in the home.

Orbi WiFi 6 scales to provide these gigabit internet services to multi-gigabit through the use of a 2.5 Gbps WAN port or using link aggregation to combine two ports together. It also uses NETGEAR’s patented tri-band mesh technology with 4×4 radios on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz fronthaul, as well as a 5GHz backhaul.

Orbi WiFi 6 Tri-band Mesh System (RBK852) will be available in the coming month for a suggested retail price of £749 for the router.

The Nighthawk EAX8 WiFi 6 Extender aims to deliver maximum speed and coverage too. With WiFi 6 added to a wireless network, Netgear claims blazing-fast performance up to 6 Gbps. The 8-stream WiFi delivers more spatial streams with more available bandwidth and thus less congestion for all the devices connected on the WiFi network.

Compatible with any WiFi Router, including internet service provider gateways, extending the network capabilities with the new Nighthawk AX8 WiFi 6 extender is seamless and uncomplicated. You have a single WiFi network name (SSID) and password so that devices do not need to be manually connected to the extended WiFi 6 network.

The EAX80 also comes equipped with four gigabit LAN ports for those who prefer a wired connection to their devices, and includes a USB 3.0 port to add network accessible storage.

The Nighthawk AX8 8-Stream WiFi 6 Mesh Extender (EAX80) is now available for pre-order worldwide for a MSRP of £279 and is expected to ship in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Moving on from WiFi 6 networking gear, NETGEAR also showed off the new Meural Canvas II this week. Netgear acquired Meural roughly one year ago in an effort to expand more in the smart home market. Through a combination of Meural's proprietary hardware and a library of 30,000 licensed artworks, the Meural Canvas II acts as a new media distribution platform for artists.

The Meural Canvas II is based on TrueArt technology, which a signature matte, anti-glare display, gesture/voice controls and a PC/mobile app to deliver a new, customisable art viewing experience. Essentially, instead of hanging a new picture frame on the wall, you could instead use one of these and change the displayed image any time you want.

Here is how the Meural Canvas II product stack breaks down:

  • 19×29 frame with 27-inch HD display in white or black – £779.
  • 19×29 frame with 27-inch HD display in dark or light wood- £829.
  • 16×24 frame with 21.5-inch HD display in white or black – £599.
  • 16×24 frame with 21.5-inch HD display in dark or light wood – £649.
  • Swivel Mount – £45.
  • Annual membership subscription to the Meural curated art library price to be confirmed.

KitGuru Says: WiFi 6 was the big thing at NETGEAR for us this year. We are looking forward to getting more familiar with the tech and putting it through its paces in the coming months.

The NETGEAR Orbi has been a leading product when it comes to mesh WiFi systems. This year, the Orbi is getting a big upgrade with the introduction of WiFi 6, bringing a big boost to bandwidth and network speeds.

WiFi 6 support has begun rolling out this year and the Netgear Orbi won't be left behind. The next-generation Orbi Mesh WiFi system is designed for high-bandwidth applications, like 4K or even 8K content streaming across multiple household screens. With the jump to WiFi 6, there is an increased number of data streams, increasing capacity for internet traffic and ensuring better speeds for a higher number of devices.

David Henry, senior vice president of Connected Home Products for NETGEAR, notes that the company is the first to launch a next-generation mesh system capable of multi-gigabit internet speeds throughout the home. He also added the following: “We are building multi-gigabit highways to the internet. NETGEAR launched our first Orbi Whole Home WiFi Mesh System in 2016 and introduced the world to the power of our patented tri-band mesh WiFi with a dedicated backhaul. Now in an era where there are more devices than ever competing for bandwidth, home WiFi networks are grinding to a halt. Only Orbi WiFi 6, with four times the network capacity of WiFi 5 (802.11ac) can solve this problem.”

The Orbi WiFi 6 mesh system uses a tri-band mesh technology with 4×4 radios on a 2.4GHz and 5GHz fronthaul and an additional 5GHz backhaul. Upgrading to one won't come cheap though, with the Orbi WiFi 6 Tri-band Mesh System (RBK852) set to retail for £749.

KitGuru Says: The Orbi WiFi 6 is expensive kit but most top-performing products tend to be that way. Are any of you considering an upgrade to mesh WiFi?

While we run a lot of our own giveaways here at KitGuru, sometimes we'll spot good ones occurring elsewhere. This week Netgear is running its own competition, offering up ten Orbi Pro WiFi systems.

The Orbi Pro operates wire-free and provides a dedicated connection between router and satellite. Setting one up is as easy as can be, provides three additional SSIDs and can provide over 100Mbps speeds between 5,000 and 10,000 square feet range.

Netgear is giving ten of these away, so we figured our readers would appreciate the heads up. The Orbi Pro is worth £470, so it is a decent prize all around.

In order to win, all you need to do is head over to Netgear's ‘Bye-Bye to bad Wi-Fi' page and fill in the details.

KitGuru Says: Good luck to those who decide to enter! Do keep in mind that this isn't our own giveaway, so any questions will need to be directed towards Netgear, who you can follow on Twitter

In KitGuru's recent Ultimate Mesh WiFi Router Test, Netgear's Orbi came out head and shoulders above the competition. Having suffered terrible WiFi in hotels, convention centres and lounges across the globe – KitGuru has long wondered why more businesses don't switch to a powerful, flexible mesh implementation. Now there's no excuse.

We got together with Netgear's marketing guru, Danny Ullrich, who told us that “In terms of raw performance and underlying technology, these Orbi Pro units are the same as the RBK50”, which is at the top end of Netgear's current mesh WiFi range for the consumer market.

“The biggest difference”, said Danny. “Is that Orbi Pro offers three separate SSIDs”.

“Businesses can use one SSDI for the public-facing part of their business, a second one for admin and the third can be reserved for private matters”, he explained. “The software included can also restrict access times so, for example, if you install Orbi Pro in a bar – then you can cut off the public facing WiFi outside office hours”.

The product has launched today, 31st August, and should be in-store around the start of October.

The addition of a wall mounting system, captive portal technology and time controls is likely to add around €100 to the price of a standard ORBI. The recommended kit will include a pair of ORBIs and retail around £429 and a third unit can be added for £249.

KitGuru Says: Netgear continues to expand its offer.  We were impressed with the previous Orbi units, so it will be interesting to see how Orbi Pro fares in the business realm.

As great as many action recorders are, finding a truly hands-free option that still offers all of the bells and whistles can be a little tricky. This is where ORBI is stepping in with its new Prime sunglasses, the world's first 360° video-recording eyewear, designed for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers to capture their most exciting moments in stitched 4K resolution.

The ORBI Prime glasses have just launched on IndieGoGo with a $75,000 goal, which has almost been reached already with just $4000 left to go at the time of writing. These glasses pair up four 1080p cameras mounted discreetly along the frame, offering 30 frames per second recording and a 4K resolution when stitched together. There is space for a replaceable 128GB microSD card, built-in WiFi, AAC stereo 48KHz audio capture, a 1000 mAh battery and micro-USB charging. Right now, the recording time is rated at around 90 minutes.

ib8hqkxj8cdcw1qq2qch

There are some other features to keep in mind, such as the UV protected polarised lenses, real-time image stabilisation and water resistant design. However, as with most crowd-funded efforts, the ORBI Prime won't be sent out for a while, with a current shipping date set for August 2017. Being the first of its kind, these glasses will also cost quite a bit with the official price being set at $499, though early backers can get it for $329 or $349 depending on just how early you are.

So how did this product come to life? Well according to ORBI co-founder and CEO, Iskander Rakhmanberdiyev, the company wanted to make something that “lets you capture your unique perspective with the world”. On top of that, ORBI saw a gap in the market, as many surveyed action camera users were after a “truly hands-free and high-quality option”. The ORBI Prime is designed to be sleek but incredibly powerful under the hood. Hopefully, it can live up to that when it eventually launches in 2017.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: While cameras aren't usually my strong suit, the idea of cramming all of that technology into a pair of sunglasses is incredibly interesting to me. Do any of you guys have much interest in video recording and camera setups? What do you think of ORBI's offering?

What if you want a strong signal across a huge area? What if you want to be able to extend that network without dead zones or dropped connections when you move around? Netgear Orbi starts as a pair of routers and promises to cover up to 4,000 square feet (300 paces in any direction) with a completely smooth hand over from unit to unit. Lionel Paris runs European product marketing for Netgear, so we invited him along to the KitGuru studios to explain the new approach for Orbi.

We first saw Orbi at IFA in Berlin and it was clearly creating a lot of interest. At first glance, it looks as though Netgear has targeted products like Ubiquiti and OnHub, but Lionel believes that Orbi is the first of a whole new class of products – and he expects the competition to launch similar devices in the future.

KitGuru says: Buying a pair of routers for £349.99 each is not cheap, but if Netgear manages to deliver on its promises of fast, extendable, easy to set up/use mesh networking in large, modern home environments, then that figure may not be prohibitive. We'll wait on the KitGuru Labs up-coming verdict as to whether Orbi delivers on Netgear's promises.
