10 years ago, very few people knew of Moon Studios. Founded in 2010, the Austrian game dev’s first project was 2015’s Metroidvania platformer Ori and the Blind Forest. Since then, the company has continued to see success with an Ori sequel (2020) and their upcoming ARPG No Rest for the Wicked. Ahead of its release, the studio has revealed that the Ori franchise has sold an impressive 10 million copies.

Taking to Twitter, the co-founder and CEO of Moon Studios ‘Thomas Mahler’ spoke on the current status and success of the company, saying “If Blind Forest would have flopped back then, we would’ve been bankrupt as a studio.”

He continued, “But thank god it didn’t – we sold around 10m copies of Ori so far, which probably makes it the most successful Metroidvania series ever made.”

This fact is doubly impressive when considering the series has yet to find its way onto PlayStation platforms, meaning this 10 million figure is spread across PC, Xbox and Switch.

Initial impressions of No Rest for the Wicked appear to be positive, however we will have to wait and see whether Moon Studios will be able to recreate their success once again with a brand new IP.

With the launch of the next generation of consoles, one of the advertised improvements by both Sony and Microsoft is the ability for the consoles to run games at 4K 120fps and even 8K. Though the consoles have yet to release, we now already know of one game which will take advantage of that higher resolution. Ori and the Will of the Wisps has been confirmed to be able to run at 6K on the Xbox Series X.

In a post on its website, the Ori team detailed exactly what improvements will be coming to Ori and the Will of the Wisps on the Xbox Series S and X. The Xbox Series X will benefit from 4K HDR locked at 120 FPS; Highest Graphics and Visual Effects settings; Instant Input Response; Faster Loading Times; High Fidelity Audio with increased Dynamic Range and Convolution Reverb for ambiences. Interestingly, the console will also offer an optional resolution mode which will allow for “6K Supersampled mode at 60FPS outputting in 4K HDR.”

While 8K TVs are still few and far between, they do exist, and so it is interesting to see the 6K resolution being supersambled down to 4K seemingly regardless of the output device. While there is no doubt that the picture will benefit from this supersampling, it would be even more visually impressive if the 6K resolution is able to run natively on an 8K display.

The Xbox Series S meanwhile will share many of the benefits coming to the Series X. Where resolution is concerned however, the Series S will offer 1080p HDR locked at 120 FPS and a 4K mode at 60FPS instead. Lastly, both consoles will include “Sharpness Settings added in Graphics Settings for additional control of the image sharpness”. The full patch notes, including bug fixes can be found HERE.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps was one of Microsoft's major console exclusive releases for 2020. The metroidvania platformer released in March to universal acclaim. Now, just over 3 months later, Microsoft has announced that the game has “over 2 million spirits [i.e. players] and counting.”

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the official ‘OriTheGame’ account said “to everyone who has explored, battled, escaped, raced, and collected light throughout the Forest of Niwen, we thank you.”

Alongside the message, the account published an image featuring a number of stats. The most interesting of which was the fact that the game has achieved “over 2 million spirits and counting”. This is certainly an impressive figure, especially for a game which was released only 3 months ago.

That being said, the game did launch day-and-date on Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s subscription service – which recently exceeded 10 million subscribers. It would therefore be interesting to see how many of those 2 million purchased the game, and how many played it for free through the subscription service.

Ori is known for being a relatively difficult game, and so it is unsurprising to see that over 240 million deaths were recorded across all games. Despite this, 7100 players managed to play through the entire game without dying a single time. Meanwhile, less than a quarter of all those who played the game managed to beat it at all.

Not many games offer in-depth community statistics such as these, so it’s always interesting whenever a developer does choose to share them. The rest of the statistics, including “total hours played” and “most popular side quests” can be found HERE.

Microsoft has been steadily adding titles to its Xbox Game Pass subscription service. The console manufacturer has now announced which games will be joining the service in the first half of March for both PC and Xbox. The titles include first-party additions such as ‘Ori and the Will of the Wisps’ as well as notable best selling AAA titles such as NBA 2K20.

On the console side, the 5th of March will see both NBA 2K20 and Train Sim World 2020 being added. NBA 2K20 was the second best selling game in all of 2019 in the US, while Train Sim World 2020 uses real-world data in order to ensure this immersive sim is as immersive as possible,

Ori and the Will of the Wisps will be added on the 11th of March, day-and-date with its release everywhere else. This first-party title has been heavily anticipated ever since the release of the first game – Ori and the Blind Forest – back in 2015. If you’re subscribed to Xbox Game Pass, this action-platformer is one you won’t want to miss.

Pikuniku will be joining the service on the 12th of March. This co-op puzzle-exploration title is unique not only in its visuals, but its gameplay. Playing as characters with no arms but two extendable legs, you must navigate the level with your partner to reach the end. Featuring fun gameplay and an enjoyable soundtrack, Pikuniku is definitely worth playing for a couple hours with a friend or family member.

Lastly, State of Decay 2 is set to receive an update titled ‘Juggernaut Edition’ which adds a plethora of new content, DLC and cross-platform multiplayer.

For PC players, you’ll find that you too will be receiving Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Pikuniku, Train Sim World 2020 and State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition. Instead of NBA 2K20 however, PC players will be receiving The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game – a tactical card game featuring many of Tolkien's most famous faces, and Mother Russia Bleeds – “An old-fashioned beat ’em up with big doses of adrenaline and trippiness, somewhere between the classic style of Streets of Rage and the ultra-violence of Hotline Miami.”

All these games will be joining the service during the first half of March. PlayStation meanwhile, recently announced which games would be joining its PlayStation Now service this month, including Control and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
