Update: Yesterday, we learned that many users across the world were having issues with Microsoft's account-based services, with customers unable to login to Xbox, Outlook, Office 365 and even Skype. At the time, we didn't have official acknowledgement from Microsoft on the wide-spread issue but today, the company finally got its affairs in order and spoke up.

While a company spokesperson didn't dish the dirt on what was causing these service outages, they did confirm to The Inquirer that “customers may have experienced difficulty signing into some services”… a useful statement I know. However, the spokesperson also added that these issues should now be resolved, so you should be free to log in to as many Microsoft services as you want without too much trouble.

Original Story: It seems that some Microsoft Account users are experiencing issues signing in this morning, affecting services like Xbox, Outlook, Office 365 and Skype. A number of complaints are being made from users across the world though so far, Microsoft has not fully acknowledged the problem, outside of an Xbox Live service status update, limiting the service to its ‘core features'.

Here in the UK I have been able to sign in to Xbox, Outlook and Skype successfully but a quick look at Twitter brings up plenty of users complaining about being unable to access a number of Microsoft services. In addition, plenty of our own readers have been messaging us in regards to these issues.

A Microsoft account is fairly essential these days as it unifies the company's entire app ecosystem. So if you are struggling with email, Skype, OneDrive, Office 365 or Xbox Live, then perhaps hang tight until Microsoft fully acknowledges the downtime and provides an update on a fix.

KitGuru Says: This particular issue doesn't seem to be affecting me at all but others do appear to be having problems. Are any of you guys having issues with Microsoft services right now?

Microsoft has decided to axe Facebook integration in the Windows Phone and Windows desktop operating systems. Windows Phone was one of the first mobile operating systems to feature a deeper Facebook integration tool, allowing for Facebook contacts and the news feed.

However, Facebook recently updated one of its API's, forcing Microsoft to shut down all of its Facebook features. In a support article on one of Microsoft's websites, that company noted that Facebook contact integration in Outlook on desktop and mobile would no longer work: “Contact information for the Facebook contacts shown will no longer be updated with information from Facebook”.

c8ddFacebook-app-for-Android-600x293

Obviously this means Microsoft owned services such as Outlook 2013 or Office 365 Outlook Web will no longer work with any Facebook connected features. In a statement went to The Verge, Microsoft reinforced its decision without providing any further details:

“Due to changes in Facebook’s latest API, Microsoft will no longer support Facebook Connect, a service that integrates some Facebook content with a Microsoft account. We are proactively working with customers to communicate the changes.”

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft has not really explained exactly why Facebook's latest API update has forced it to kill off all integration with the social network. It could be a compatibility issue or maybe it became a security issue, either way, Microsoft hasn't really gone in to great detail as of yet.

Microsoft is well known for its costly acquisitions, with Nokia, Mojang and Skype all being snapped up by them for substantial amounts in the last few years. Now it seems that it is willing to pay over $100 million for a calendar app on iOS and Android, certainly not pocket change for an app that doesn't even run on Windows. This might have you scratching your head as to why they are buying these kind of apps for mobile platforms they don't even own.

In this case it seems that this acquisition is probably going to be used for the tech behind the app, with features from the Sunrise app used in future Office apps for Android, iOS and maybe even Windows versions. As well as this, Microsoft will be keeping the current Sunrise app alive for both mobile operating systems, but rebranding it, similar to what it has done with another recent app, Acompli which is acquired for $200 million.
Sunrise
These recent purchases really do show that Microsoft is fully invested in making itself into a platform agnostic services company, where you can access all of their services no matter what devices you are running, be it for business or consumer use, Android, iOS or Windows. At the end of the day this is great news for anyone who uses Microsoft software and services.

Microsoft has also just announced the release of the tech preview of Office for Windows 10, which is available to anyone running Windows 10, from the windows app store, for free from today. This is a touch friendly version of Office in a similar design style to the iPad and Android tablet versions. While the tech preview will probably not be free for desktops running Windows 10 forever, smaller Windows 10 tablets will come with this version of office preloaded, so this is your chance to give it a try.

KitGuru Says: While $100 million does seem a bit much for a calendar app, buying up a few basic apps on competing operations systems to get a foothold could turn out to be a good idea at the end of the day. Have you ever tried Sunrise?

Microsoft has just released its new Outlook apps for both iOS and Android devices, and already, it has risen above Gmail and other similar productivity apps in the iOS store. While it has been based on the Acompli app that Microsoft bought at the end of last year, this new re-branded version for both mobile operating systems has had a few changes and further changes will be coming to improve the app in the future for both OS's.

Along with Outlook, Microsoft has also fully launched the Office suite of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for Android, giving access to Office on both mobile platforms for free. Windows 10 will also be including totally new universal Office apps that will work across desktops, tablets and phones using the same code on any Windows 10 device.

Outlook-for-iOS-and-Android

With this increased popularity and the Microsoft name behind it, there has been further scrutiny of the security of the app and unfortunately at least one security expert does seem to have found some issues with the apps. René Winkelmeyer, an IBM developer, said that the apps contain some serious security issues and encourages companies to block the apps in enterprise environments.

The reason for this is that, as stated by Acompli, “messages, calendar events and contacts, along with their associated metadata, may be temporarily stored and indexed securely both in our servers and locally on the app on your device. If your emails have attachments and you request to open them in our app, the service retrieves them from the mail server, securely stores them temporarily on our servers, and delivers them to the app.”

In essence the app that is checking your emails is running on a server in the cloud, then organising and sending your emails on to the app on your phone. This is similar to what any other online email service such as Gmail would do when they scan your email, to serve you adverts relevant to the email content and categorise the email. The Outlook app does not serve adverts in this way, but this may still be an issue for companies and individuals who do not want their emails scanned  and indexed by Microsoft.

KitGuru Says: I'm glad to see that iOS and Android users now have access to an Outlook app that provides full Outlook functionality. The security issues raised by Rene may be an issue for some companies but this shouldn't worry most users and it is also clearly stated in the terms and conditions. No doubt that before Acompli was bought by Microsoft nobody cared how this worked. Anyone downloading this to give it a go?

Microsoft had a lot to tell us during its Windows 10 event and several big announcements to make. One of the smaller announcements, was that its Office software suite will be getting a proper makeover for touch devices and it will be pre-installed for free on small tablets and phones running Windows 10.

With general availability of the Office universal apps expected later this year and preview versions on Windows 10 Tech Preview in coming weeks, we should be able to get our hands on this pretty soon. The Office universal apps run everywhere Windows 10 does, from desktop to tablet and phone, and apart from some slight UI changes, the same code is running behind the app on any Windows 10 powered device. This brings a consistent style to all Windows 10 devices and should make it easier to use Office on any device with the new apps for Android and iOS.
Word_UI
The suite will launch with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Onenote, Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar providing most of the applications Office users use everyday. All of these have been totally redesigned from the current desktop apps, while maintaining the functionality and fidelity. For instance the ribbon along the top of all Office apps today, is still present, appearing where it normally would on tablets and available as a drag out menu when run on a phone. All documents and recent files will also be accessible through Onedrive and Dropbox, with recent document lists synchronizing almost instantly between different devices.

The Office team is definitely not abandoning desktop versions of Office however, with Office 2016, the successor to the current Office 2013 already in development. Office 2016 will still be optimised for keyboard and mouse as normal and should come out during the second half of 2015.

KitGuru Says: It's pretty great the way that the price of Office for consumers has plummeted in recent years, with Office 365 costing only £6 a month and soon totally free versions of Office available for all. Anyone else running the Windows 10 TP looking forward to giving the new Office universal apps a go?

Microsoft Corp.’s Office productivity suite is, without any doubts, the most popular set of applications ever developed. Nonetheless, at present the suite lacks something here and there, which is why it cannot be called ideal. Bill Gates, a co-founder of Microsoft, claims that he actually wants to make Office dramatically better and forward-looking.

“Of all the things that Microsoft needs to do in terms of making people more productive, help them communicate in more ways. It is a long list of opportunities that Microsoft has to innovate,” said Bill Gates, who advices Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella, in an interview with Bloomberg TV. “Making Office dramatically better would be really high on the list. That is a kind of thing that I am trying to help to make sure they move fast on.”

Microsoft Office is a strategic asset of Microsoft. If the whole world continues to use Office on the majority of computing devices and on all platforms, Microsoft will continue to earn money. Therefore, it is crucial for Microsoft to make the Office suite the best. Without any doubts, Mr. Gates understands the importance of both Windows and Office in the future of the company he has co-founded.

Unfortunately, Bill Gates did not elaborate how Microsoft plans to make Office better.

Microsoft Corp. has announced that its Office applications for Apple iPad were downloaded more than 12 million times in just one week. At present, the Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint applications are top free apps in Apple’s AppStore. But is 12 million really a lot?

“More than 12 million downloads of Word, Excel, PPT and OneNote for iPad at AppStore,” a tweet by Microsoft Office Division reads.

microsoft_office_downloads_appstore

Microsoft offers a full set of iPad-optimized productivity applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote and many others. Office for iPad apps have a familiar look and feel, but are built from the ground up for iPad and touch-based input. All the Office apps are available for free and allow to read, view and present documents, spreadsheets and presentations. However, to create and edit documents, customers will need an Office 365 subscription (e.g., Office 365 Home Premium subscription costs $9.99 a month and $99.99 a year).

Without any doubts, 12 million downloads in the first week is a respectable number. Moreover, not a lot of applications are that popular in general; many apps are only downloaded by up to a million of customers.

apple_ipad_microsoft_office_powerpoint

Nonetheless, one should keep in mind that there are 180 – 200 million iPads in use nowadays and only about 6 per cent of iPad owners decided to try one or more Microsoft Office apps. Moreover, to find out whether the Office is actually used to create on iPad, one would need to know how many Office 365 subscriptions Microsoft sold in the first week of Office for iPad availability and how many subscriptions it sells normally. Apparently, Microsoft does not really want to disclose that number.

”We are extremely pleased with the Office for iPad interest we have seen from consumers and business alike,” a statement by Microsoft reads. “We have no additional details to share.”

KitGuru Says: Looks like thanks to Pages, Numbers, Keynote and other apps from Apple that come for free with new iPads and iPhones, many customers simply do not need Office programs from Microsoft. Meanwhile, those, who have used iPad for some time, probably already own productivity applications they need.

We all know companies like Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebook and others, have been sharing information with the authorities in the US for quite some time, but now it's come to light that Microsoft even allowed the NSA to record video conversations people were having using the VOIP service, Skype.

This might seem like not such a big deal, since one of Skype's more attractive features is its encryption. Indeed Skype's own website says: “All Skype-to-Skype voice, video, and instant message conversations are encrypted. This protects you from potential eavesdropping by malicious users.” The encryption is described as being a high level, 256bit encryption, the same sort used by the “US Government to protect sensitive information.” How ironic.

According to the Guardian's newly discovered documents, Microsoft aided the NSA in getting past its own encryption, so that chat and video calls could be recorded. It also allowed the government organisation to bypass encryption on the Outlook email platform.

On top of that, it also purportedly worked with the FBI in order to give better access to services like Skydrive.

obama
All your data shall be mine, mine, muahaha

All of this came about some time in mid 2012, when Microsoft began testing new privacy features on its Outlook platform. The NSA apparently became concerned that it wouldn't be able to dip its hand into the information cookie jar and come out with a handful of personal information on people, including conversation logs and live recordings. Fortunately, Microsoft was willing to cooperate and before releasing the new protective features into the wild, it made sure the NSA could bypass them.

Skype though? That's been part of PRISM for over two years. Work began on bringing it under the PRISM umbrella back in 2010, but it took until early 2011 to implement it properly. Not only has the NSA been able to record all metadata from Skype conversations and video calls since February 2011, but it's been able to record all content as well.

Microsoft's response was somewhat typical: overly wordy and full of ass covering measures. “We have clear principles which guide the response across our entire company to government demands for customer information for both law enforcement and national security issues,” reads the statement. “First, we take our commitments to our customers and to compliance with applicable law very seriously, so we provide customer data only in response to legal processes.”

It did however say that it wasn't involved in any blanket information gathering, that the only data it sent to the NSA was on individual requests on individual accounts/people.

Towards the end, it's clear that Microsoft wished it could be more open with the activities too, something that a lot of tech firms have been lobbying the Obama administration to allow them to do.

“Finally when we upgrade or update products legal obligations may in some circumstances require that we maintain the ability to provide information in response to a law enforcement or national security request. There are aspects of this debate that we wish we were able to discuss more freely. That's why we've argued for additional transparency that would help everyone understand and debate these important issues.”

KitGuru Says: Well, I think this will finally end my 10 year run of using Skype. It's a shame as it was always such a good service. To TeamSpeak!

Microsoft's Hotmail and Outlook services went down for a big portion of the user base earlier this morning and over 12 hours on there's still a lot of people unable to access their email.

While this writer has no problem accessing his old Hotmail account, the Microsoft Status page is suggesting that there are still problems with the service. “We're having a problem accessing email. You might not be able to see all your email messages. We're working to restore service right now,” it reads for Hotmail and a similar message for Outlook.

The last update was at 09:11 this morning, with the next update expected within the next half an hour.

Outlook
This is bad news for the big advertising campaign Microsoft has put behind Outlook

At the time of writing there are also a lot of Hotmail users taking to Twitter to voice their complaints. Interestingly, a lot of them seem to come from non-English speaking countries, perhaps suggesting a more international outage.

On the plus side for Microsoft, it initially had problems with Calendar and Skydrive too, but those issues have now apparently been fixed, as the status page suggests that they are running normally.

KitGuru Says: This isn't great news for Microsoft, which has seen its footprint in the online email game reduce significantly in recent years thanks to the growth of rival services like Gmail. Where once Hotmail was the darling of net users everywhere, it's hard to find someone that uses it now.

Alongside Windows 8 development, the next version of Microsoft Office (codenamed Office 15) is also right on track with a Technical Preview having just been distributed to a select group of customers under non-disclosure agreements for testing.

PJ Hough whom is CVP of Development for Microsoft's Office Division said, “At this early point in our development cycle, I'm not able to share too much about Office 15, but I can tell you Office 15 is the most ambitious undertaking yet for the Office Division. With Office 15, for the first time ever, we will simultaneously update our cloud services, servers, and mobile and PC clients for Office, Office 365, Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, Project, and Visio. Quite simply, Office 15 will help people work, collaborate, and communicate smarter and faster than ever before“.

If you're keen to try it out at the earliest available opportunity, it's been said that public beta will be released in “late summer”.

At this early stage of development we're still yet to hear details on the features side of things or when the planned RTM (Release-To-Manufacturing) date is, but sources are so far indicating it will be out before the end of this year. The previously rumored ‘Office for iPad‘ variant of the next-gen productivity suite also remains unconfirmed at this point.

KitGuru says: No doubt with Windows 8 being first out the gate, MS are working on this being the first version of Office to ship with a touch-friendly user interface, likely getting some Metro-style UI treatment.
