The Nintendo Switch continues to surprise many people with the number of different modern games which it is capable of running. From DOOM Eternal to The Witcher III, the Switch seems to keep releasing “impossible ports”. Of course, many compromises have to be made in the process, as can be seen with the upcoming release of Apex Legends – the technical details of which have now been revealed.

As reported by Famitsu, and translated by NintendoEverything, Apex Legends on the Switch will run at 720p and 30fps when in docked mode, and will see the resolution drop to 576p when in handheld mode. These resolutions are not uncommon to see on the Switch, but of course, with PS5 and Series X games running at 4K and 60fps, the visual and performance downgrade may be too great for some – even if it can be played portably.

In an interview with Nintendo Life, the porting team at Panic Button revealed that aside from resolution and framerate, little else is changed, saying “everything that’s there on other versions of the game should be there on Switch. I think the big challenge for us is always coming in and understanding what parts of the game that we can adapt and make changes to and optimize and what parts are so essential that we need to leave alone. I think ultimately the changes we had to make are not going to impact players' experience with it. It’s still a great experience and it feels like playing Apex!”

Apex Legends on Switch does come with one neat feature: gyro aiming, which should hopefully help with the 30fps frame rate somewhat. Apex Legends launches on the Nintendo Switch today.

It has been a long time coming, but today Bethesda has officially announced the release date for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus on Nintendo Switch. The game is arriving as part of Bethesda's effort to support Nintendo's latest platform, though frame rate and graphical compromises have had to be made.

Bethesda kicked off its Switch support with DOOM and Skyrim late last year. Now with Wolfenstein II, we get to see how a 2017 game holds up on Nintendo's portable system. The port is being handled by Panic Button, the same team that brought DOOM to the Switch in December. There is already a gameplay trailer live, which gives us a very brief look at what to expect in terms of graphics:

We don't have the technical details just yet, but we do know that the Switch version will be targeting 30 frames per second rather than 60. We can also expect dynamic resolutions to kick in to maintain the frame rate as close to 30 as possible.

Wolfentein II: The New Colossus will be releasing on the Nintendo Switch on the 29th of June. Bethesda has confirmed that Switch owners will be getting the full experience, without any censorship in place.

KitGuru Says: I played quite a bit of DOOM on the Nintendo Switch and while it may not look as nice as the PC version, I considered it to be a pretty major technical achievement. It will be interesting to see if any improvements have been made for the Wolfenstein II port this time around.

Winner of Best Action Game at The Game Awards as well as nominated for three others, Wolfenstein II has had a rather successful year since its October 27th release. Now, the game will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch, ported by the same team that handled Doom on the portable platform.

The news was revealed by Machine Games’ narrative designer, Tommy Tordsson Bjork and senior game designer Andreas Öjerfors in an interview with GameReactor, along with a release window of early 2018.

“It's the same as the Doom studio,” says Bjork, explaining that it’s being handled by studio Panic Button. “They're experts at the Switch an now they're experts with the [id Tech 6] engine so we work with them, and the Doom version turned out to be really kick-ass on the Switch so I think Wolfenstein will be the same,” adds Öjerfors.

While Doom on the Nintendo Switch did suffer a drop to 30 frames per second from its usual 60+, it is known for not compromising level design or the integrity of the main game in order to get it working on the portable console.

For the time being, it doesn’t look like we are getting a Wolfenstein II VFR as we did with Doom, “but at some time we would love to do some VR experiments,” says the Machine Games team.

KitGuru Says: It looks like the future is bright for the series, and Wolfenstein II is something I will be picking up in the very near future. Do you think you’ll be grabbing the title on the Nintendo Switch?
