Five Nights At Freddy’s may just be one of the biggest indie franchises of all time, with the simplicity of the original game giving way to 9 titles in total, a dozen books and now a film. Set to arrive in cinemas on the 27th of October, the first teaser for Five Nights at Freddy’s has now been released.

The short minute-long trailer feels tonally inline with the games, taking on a discomforting energy and vibe even prior to the reveal of the animatronics.

Speaking of, Freddy and friend’s animatronic characters have been created by Jim Henson’s iconic Creature Shop (known for their work on The Dark Crystal, Sesame Street, Honey, I Blew up the Kids and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – to name a few).

The synopsis for the Five Night At Freddy’s adaptation is as follows: “The film follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy's won't be so easy to make it through.”

Five Nights At Freddy’s will come to cinemas as well as Paramount+ on the 27th of October. The film is directed by Emma Tammi and stars Josh Hutcherson of Hunger Games fame.

Back in February of last year we reported that a Knuckles the Echidna spin-off TV show was in the works at Paramount+ following the success of the second Sonic the Hedgehog film – which of course introduced Knuckles to the film franchise. One year on from its initial announcement we now have official details on the show – including the fact that the film’s director will return for the TV show.

As reported by Variety, the Knuckles spin-off show is set between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (currently planned to hit cinemas in December 2024) and sees Knuckles “[agreeing] to train Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior”. Unsurprisingly, both Idris Elba and Adam Pally will reprise their roles as Knuckles and Wade whippie respectively for the show.

Making the show feel in alignment with the films, Sonic 1 and 2’s director Jeff Fowler is serving as an executive producer for the series and will even direct the pilot episode. More of the film’s creative crew are also returning for the show, with Neal H. Moritz; Toby Ascher; Toru Nakahara and Elba himself all serving as executive producers.

Both Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 were fun films with near-universal appeal, and so it is exciting to see this iteration of the Blue Blur (and his friends) expanding into more mediums. Hopefully the show ends up being just as good as the films. We will have to wait and see.

Marty O'Donnell, best known for his work as a composer at Bungie in the days of Halo, and eventually, the early days of Destiny, has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft. O'Donnell and fellow composer, Mike Salvatori, claim that Microsoft owes the pair royalties dating back 20 years.

As reported by Eurogamer, the lawsuit was filed at a Washington state court in June 2020, but has been kept behind closed doors for the most part as legal teams from both sides conduct depositions and collect evidence. Next week, the case will go to mediation, but if no agreement can be reached, the lawsuit will be handled in court.

Due to the on-going lawsuit, O'Donnell and Salvatori may even move to block the release of Microsoft and Showtime's upcoming Halo TV series, which is set to debut on Paramount+ in March.

According to O'Donnell, he has been trying to get clear answers for questions over the lack of royalties from Microsoft for many years but to no avail. While Microsoft claims the Halo music was created under a work-for-hire contract, O'Donnell and Salvatori maintain that it was supposed to be a licensing deal.

Assuming the case is not settled beforehand, there will be a pretrial conference in May, after which, a trial date will be set.

KitGuru Says: O'Donnell also previously sued Bungie over his work composing music for Destiny and won, so Microsoft could be heading towards a situation where it needs to pay out for Halo as well.

The Sonic the Hedgehog film has had a tumultuous development. From the near universal dislike for the original trailer, to the studio completely redesigning Sonic, leading to delays in the films release, concerns were raised that these served as a bad omen for the film itself. It would seem that hasn’t been the case, as the film has now overtaken Detective Pikachu to achieve the best domestic opening weekend record for any video game film ever.

Having released on the 14th of February, the Sonic the Hedgehog film managed to achieve a three-day opening weekend total of $57 million, which is greater than Detective Pikachu’s $54.3 million. The film is predicted to make a 4 day domestic total of $70 million. Worldwide, the film has managed to rake in over $111 million. With a budget of $85 million, the film is set to make great returns.

The success doesn't end there, as Sonic the Hedgehog represents only the third video game film to be rated at over 50% on Rotten Tomatoes – currently standing at 63% (and an audience score of 95%). This marks a positive shift in the narrative of the Sonic the Hedgehog film.

Back in April 2019, Paramount Pictures released the first trailer for the film. Originally set to be released in November that year, the trailer saw mass criticism mainly due to the design of sonic, which was deemed to have been in the uncanny valley. In response, Paramount opted to delay the film, in order to redesign Sonic.

Later in November, a second trailer was released, featuring the newly designed Sonic. Reception was much more positive, but concerns were raised that perhaps it was too little too late, and that people had made their minds up already. If early response is anything to go by, this hasn’t been the case.

It’s good to see that both fans and critics seem to be enjoying the film. Though it is a shame that the studio responsible for fixing the design shut down, at least their final project is being regarded as a success.

For some reason, a Hollywood executive somewhere thought it would be a good idea to turn Sonic the Hedgehog into a movie. We saw some leaked CGI renditions of live-action Sonic late last year, which immediately caused a wave of concern. Now, the full trailer is out, but it has only made things look worse.

In the live-action version of Sonic, we will be following our (not so) favourite blue hedgehog on the run from Dr. Robotnik, who wants to capture Sonic and use his power for world domination. On this journey, Sonic will be accompanied by Tom Wachowski, a random police officer who ends up befriending Sonic along the way.

The film's version of Sonic has already been polarising thanks to the studio's efforts to make him appear more human. This is only made worse by the fact that Sonic has a full human set of teeth, which is now turning into a running meme across the internet. Perhaps someone on the production squad should have asked for fan feedback, because some fans are already turning in decent looking redesigns:

At least the trailer gets some elements right. Sonic's spin-dash move looks fairly good on screen and towards the very end, we get a quick shot of Robotnik looking closer to the version of the character we are used to. He's not a literal Egg Man, but he is bald and they kept the wild moustache.

KitGuru Says: Live-action Sonic never sounded like a great idea to begin with. Then again, this isn't necessarily aimed at fans who grew up with Sonic, but is instead aimed at children to bring a new audience to the series. What do you guys think of the new Sonic trailer?

Reports of a Rainbow Six movie have been floating around for quite some time, starring Tom Clancy’s second most popular character in the “Ryanverse” series, John Clark. While Tom Hardy and Ryan Reynolds were both pegged for the role of the character in Without Remorse and Rainbow Six, it seems that new developments put Michael B. Jordan in the lead for each.

John Clark is an ex-Navy Seal written by Clancy to be CIA agent Jack Ryan’s antithesis, often seen taking physical action rather than opting for a calmer diplomatic approach. He debuted in Clancy’s 1987 novel The Cardinal of the Kremlin, and gained prominence in the 1994 movie adaptation of Clear and Present Danger played by Willem Defoe and again in 2002’s The Sum of All Fears by Liev Schreiber.

He’s best known in the video game world as being the director of Team Rainbow in Rainbow Six up until Rainbow Six: Vegas in 2006. Rainbow Six Siege drops many of its story elements, instead opting for a multiplayer-only approach and background biographies to fill the void. Clark is not a part of the roster, however the supposed recent adaptation could see a lot more breaching tactics as a nod towards Ubisoft’s latest effort.

Variety reports that Paramount will bring the character’s origins to the big screen with Michael B. Jordan starring in Without Remorse, followed by Rainbow Six. These developments follow renewed interest in Tom Clancy adaptations after Amazon and Paramount TV recently released its popular John Krasinski-led Jack Ryan series.

Details are scarce at the moment, however it’s expected that the adaptation of Without Remorse will be updated slightly, given that Clark’s history is steeped in the Vietnam War and Jordan is just 31 years old. No release window has been set.

KitGuru Says: I personally loved the slower methodical approach to the Jack Ryan television series, but I’m interested to see how a more hands-on, teamwork approach will be handled. What would you like to see from a Rainbow Six movie?

It was merely a month ago that we first heard how Paramount Pictures, owner of the Star Trek trademark and franchise, was looking to halt production on fan-film Star Trek: Axanar, claiming ownership of the Klingon language in the process. Now though we've learned that it's halting that legal action, having settled with the film's producers.

Paramount's original claim was that the film, Star Trek: Axanar – the feature length follow up to Prelude to Axanar – infringed on its copyright. Although there are a lot of themes in Star Trek that are not copyrightable, Paramount claimed it owned the rights to several ship designs, the Klingon language and various other aspects of the Star Trek Universe.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZFycZqcQhQ']

However the whole thing has become much more amicable now, we're told. Director of the latest Star Trek movies, J.J. Abrams himself made the announcement at a fan-event last week.

“We started talking about this realizing that this is not an appropriate way to deal with the fans. The fans should be celebrating this thing,” he said (via Deadline).

It wasn't Abrams who made the move to halt these proceedings though, but director of upcoming Star Trek: Beyond, Justin Lin. Abrams described how Lin went to the studio and managed to convince the executives to stop the lawsuits in its tracks.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W1_8IV8uhA']

The director of Axanar, Alex Peters later posted a message detailing how happy he was at the news and expressed his thanks for the actions of both Abrams and Lin (as per TorrentFreak).

Moving forward, both parties still need to find an amicable agreement as to how Axanar will proceed. It may be that there are certain aspects of the Star Trek universe that Paramount doesn't want used, but as long as everyone can agree on a few points, we should see the fan film finished before long.

KitGuru Says: Here's hoping whatever the settlement is, that the Axanar producers don't get bent over too much. There's a lot of money and legal expertise behind Paramount, it's not like fan-film producers can easily compete with that. It was lucky they had the Star Trek directors on their side.

Can you own a language? That might seem like a bizarre question to ask but it's one that lawyers will have to figure out the answer to, as it's become rather important in the case of Paramount Pictures vs a crowd-funded team, who want to make a Star Trek spin-off. They already made a short film and are now planning a feature, but Paramount is having none of it.

The film in question is Star Trek: Axanar, the prequel for which, Prelude to Axanar, was released as a short 20 minute film back in 2014 to much fan acclaim. While pursuing the development of the feature follow-up however, the creators ran into a big difficulty: Paramount, the company that owns the Star Trek rights, believes it owns the rights to many elements of its universe too: including the Klingon language.

greatspok

Great, Spok!

The fan-film-makers contest this however, stating that a language is more of an idea or a system than a piece of intellectual property and cannot be susceptible to such claims. Paramount in turn disagrees, stating that because there are no real Klingons to speak the language, that it is not really a language and more a property of the original Star Trek rightsholders (thanks TorrentFreak).

While that seems unlikely to hold up, considering there are many languages created for the purposes of fictional peoples that are spoken by real world humans, there are other complaints that perhaps could block Axanar more than the language complaints. Ship designs from early Star Trek shows have been used as inspiration for spacecraft in the Axanar prelude and the planned feature film.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W1_8IV8uhA']

It might be easier to convince a judge that a physical design is a copyrightable idea, especially considering the potential for toys and other companion products with such designs. Paramount cites examples such as the Batmobile as being a copyrightable design, something it feels also applies to the Star Trek ships.

Although the film was expected to release in early 2016, it seems likely that it will now be pushed back, if it is released at all because of Paramount's suit.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: As much as Paramount probably has a good argument here, there seems little point in shutting down the project. All it will do is encourage a greater love for Star Trek. Nobody is going to watch this and stop throwing money at Paramount for more Star Trek. It's ludicrous to stop fans enjoying your intellectual property, whether you make money from it or not.

Over the past couple of months, Twitter account @55Uhz, has been tweeting out the movie Top Gun, frame by frame. Considering it had over 110 minutes to get through and each second of every minute featured 25 frames, it had a lot of ground to cover, even if it was putting out a couple of images an hour. But now it is no more, as Twitter has suspended the account after it received a lengthy DMCA takedown request from lawyers representing Paramount Pictures.

“Wait, they took what down?!”

Yes, evidently Paramount felt that someone tweeting out stills from the movie would somehow lose it money, so it dumped what was probably a few thousand dollars into a legal team instead and had them send a long list of infringing links and a takedown request to Twitter. Which the social network promptly complied with.

volleyball
Let's just all suck in our guts and settle this over a nice topless game of volleyball

While it seems hard to imagine how Paramount felt that its copyright was being threatened by the tweeting of still images from the movie, ultimately it just used the fact that it hadn't authorised 55uhz to do so.

“Paramount has the good faith belief that the use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by Paramount, its agent or the law,” it said in the letter (posted in full over at ChillingEffects).

KitGuru Says: Another great example of overreaching copyright law. There is no way a frame by frame breakdown of a movie could be considered adequate substitution for the original thing.

Paramount Pictures may be the first movie studio to phase out 35 millimeter film for its big theatrical releases, according to The Los Angeles Times, this would make ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street ‘ the first movie to kick off the trend while Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues will be the last blockbuster to be released on 35mm film by the studio.

So far this move is US only, the rest of the world will still be getting traditional film tapes but if more studio's follow in Paramount's footsteps, we might see this spread to other parts of the world fast enough. Cinemas might need to get in to gear though as around 8 per cent of US theatres aren't equipped to screen digital movies, the process might start off slow but eventually more studios will adopt this method and go digital only and if those cinemas can't afford the high price of a digital projector then we might see a few go out of business.

Paramount_Pictures_logo_(2002)

While talking to The Los Angeles Times, Christopher Horak, Director of the UCLA Film & Television Archive said that this change is of “huge significance”: “For 120 years, film and 35 mm has been the format of choice for theatrical presentations. Now we're seeing the end of that. I'm not shocked that it's happened, but how quickly it has happened.”

KitGuru Says: This won't be such a big deal for most people, we are used to digital distribution by now but it is amazing how long 35mm film has lasted, 120 years of showing movies in the same way is about to come to an end and that deserves some recognition.
