While Kim Dotcom may have been forced to scrap his Party Party earlier this year, he's still going ahead with his Internet Party, not a celebration, but a political organisation. In-fact, he's even more likely to push it forward with it after hearing the news that one in five New Zealanders would consider voting for it.

In a survey by Three News, over 20 per cent of responders said that they would consider voting for Dotcom's party. Out of those that were undecided on who they would vote for, that number grew to 23 per cent. However, 75 per cent did say that they wouldn't vote for the Internet Party, but that's unlikely to be that much more than the traditional near 50/50 split of most political supporters.

The support for Dotcom's organisation was enough to get a comment out of the current Prime Minister in New Zealand, John Key, who's faced off against Dotcom multiple times, often in relation to the illegal spying that the NZ intelligence agency GCSB, committed against Dotcom. Key said:

“It's one thing for people to say ‘yeah I might consider it' – it's a very different issue when they are in the privacy of the ballot box to actually cast their vote in favour,” said Key. He then went on to suggest that Dotcom's only reason for setting up a political party was to get a different PM in and therefore avoid extradition.

Dotcom himself can't stand for election, since he's not a NZ citizen, but he can be involved with its running – and certainly funding. He's also a clear inspiration for the party's policies, which include:

  • Privacy
  • Free Speech
  • Soft Copyright
  • ISP Safe Harbors
  • Easy Immigration
  • Cheap Bandwidth
  • No TPP or NSA

Kim Dotcom recently announced two bigs things: that he was launching a political party and that he was throwing a “Party Party,” to celebrate his 40th birthday, the launch of his new album and the two year anniversary of his Megaupload arrest. Now though he's had to cancel the latter, due to the fact that he gave tickets away for free along with food and entertainment, which could be considered “treating,” under New Zealand law, essentially trying to influence voters with free gifts.

The cancellation was sent out in much the same way as the original announcement, with Dotcom posting a message via a twitpic which reads:

“I apologise, my friends. Sadly we must cancel my birthday party after we received advice that the event could risk breaching electoral laws.

“Because the tickets were free, we were advised that the purpose of the event could be misunderstood.” No small number of tickets went out either, as while initially only planning for a couple of thousand people to attend, before announcing its shut down Dotcom issued over 25,000 tickets to fans.

“I would like to thank the amazing 25,000 people who registered for my birthday party. You are all amazing!” Dotcom continued. “I was looking forward to an awesome event with great live music and other surprises – but the future of New Zealand is more important to me than one night of fun. I hope you agree. So we are moving forward with the Internet Party!”

Had Dotcom gone on with his plans and had the party anyway, he risked being found guilty of treating which in itself can land you in jail for as much as two years, along with a $40,000 NZ fine.

Much of the details surrounding Dotcom's Internet Party still have yet to be unveiled. We know what its logo looks like, but who it will push at the next election is unknown. Dotcom has alluded however that it will aim to improve internet privacy for New Zealanders, as well as making broadband access cheaper and more readily available.

Kitguru Says: This seems a bit of a shame, not only for Dotcom but for the rest of us. Chances are there would have been some pretty strange pictures floating around online the morning after a Dotcom party of this magnitude.

The Internet Party is the name of digital entrepreneur Kim Dotcom's new political party, giving you little reason to guess what one of its main concerns will be. Much of it will be focused around improving the online privacy of individuals, restricting the spying capabilities (legally, not technologically) of intelligence agencies, as well as providing New Zealanders with better access to cheaper, faster internet.

The announcement came from – where else – Dotcom's Twitter account, where he denied earlier rumours about the party's name and also revealed its logo: “My new political party won't be named Mega Party. We are the Internet Party. Here's our logo for the first time.”

We first heard about Dotcom's political aims last year when he discussed contesting elections in 2014. However he made it clear at the time that he wouldn't be running himself, just helping to run the party. It also coincided with him stepping down as director of the file locker company, Mega.

He's also made it clear from his recent announcement that the Internet Party would not be launching at his upcoming birthday celebration Party Party, which will also launch his new album and commemorate the two year anniversary of his arrest during the raid on his home that saw his assets seized and Megaupload shut down.

KitGuru Says: While I'm not sure how much success Dotcom will have in terms of getting someone into power, he does have a bit of a Robin Hood image these days. Perhaps he'll at least be able to draw attention to the issues of privacy and internet freedoms in New Zealand – he's certainly helped do that in the rest of the world.
