Patriot Memory's gaming brand, Viper Gaming, has just introduced a new M.2 2230 SSD, the VP4000 Mini M.2 2230 SSD. Perfect for handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck, this SSD is Patriot's first foray into the M.2 2230 form factor.

With sequential read and write speeds reaching up to 5,000 MB/s and 3,500 MB/s, respectively, the VP4000 Mini M.2 2230 SSD will allow you to blaze through file transfers and game startups. In addition, with up to 2TB of storage, you won't have to juggle game installs or file downloads as often.

One common issue with high-performance SSDs is overheating, but this can be solved with a heatsink. For this mini SSD, Patriot has added an ultra-thin graphene heat spreader to keep thermals in check during extended gaming sessions.

The VP4000 Mini M.2 2230 SSD is designed to work with various devices, from handheld gaming consoles like the Steam Deck to compact PCs, laptops, and tablets like the Microsoft Surface. The SSD will become available in 2024.

Patriot Memory has announced a lineup expansion for its Viper Xtreme 5 DDR5 memory series, bringing to market new variants of its memory kits with and without RGB lighting, with speeds up to 8200MHz as well as new capacity options.

The Viper Xtreme 5 memory series was first introduced earlier this year, at CES 2023, featuring memory modules designed for the high-end market. Originally, the XMP 3.0 ready series only included 32GB memory kits (2×16 GB) featuring RGB modules with speeds ranging between 7,600 MHz and 8,000 MHz.

With the latest update, Patriot increased the offering, adding two 48GB (2x 24GB) RGB memory kits clocked at 7,600MHz (36-48-48-84) and 8,000MHz (38-48-48-84). The company also added non-RGB modules featuring the same snake-head-shaped aluminium heatsink with a matte finish, minus the RGB lightbar. These non-RGB modules will be available in 32GB (2x 16GB) and 48GB (2x 24GB) kits running at 7,600MHz (36-48-48-84) or 8,200MHz (38-48-48-84) speeds with a voltage of 1.45V.

All modules are hand-tested to ensure stability. The RGB lighting can be configured using most motherboard software, including Gigabyte RGB Fusion 2.0, Asus Aura Sync, ASRock Polychrom Sync, and MSI Mystic Light Sync. The new Viper Xtreme 5 memory kits will be available in September 2023.

Viper Gaming is back in the headlines this week with a new PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD. Boasting write speeds of up to 7,400MB/s and up to 2TB capacity, the Viper Gaming VP4300 SSD looks to be a significant upgrade over previous generations.

This week, the Viper VP4300 M.2 SSD was announced, featuring the latest Innogrit Gen 4×4 high-speed controller and DDR4 DRAM cache, this SSD offers peak performance for PCIe 4.0 capable systems. In terms of speeds, 4K random read and wire speeds reach up to 800K IOPS and sequential read/write speeds reach up to 6,800MB/s and 7,400MB/s respectively.

Cooling is becoming increasingly important for M.2 SSDs to avoid thermal throttling and maintain peak speeds for longer periods of time. To tackle this, the Viper VP4300 comes with an aluminium heatshield and a graphene thermal pad to improve heat transfer and heat dissipation. The pad carries heat away from core components and the heat shield then spreads it out to be carried away by system fans.

Here is the full feature list for this new SSD:

  • Built with the latest Innogrit IG5236 PCIe Gen 4 x 4 NVMe controller to unlock ultra-fast sequential Read and Write speeds up to 7.400MB/s and 6,800MB/s.
  • Thermal Throttling Technology and built-in thermal sensor to provide additional protection and sustain the best performance under intense workloads.
  • Delivers the perfect combination of overall performance, ultra-fast transfer speeds, and enhanced multitasking capabilities.
  • Built on a 10-layer PCB to guarantee excellent signal integrity for ultra-stability.
  • Two optional heatshields included in the package: Aluminum heatshield x 1, Graphene heatshield x 1
  • O/S Supported: Windows® 7*/8.0*/8.1/10 (*May require driver)
  • Must be on the latest AMD CPU and Motherboard, at time of release, to obtain optimal Gen4x4 speed. Other platforms will be backward compatible with Gen3x4

As usual, this SSD is backed by Viper Gaming's five-year warranty. The Viper VP4300 will be available for $254.99 for the 1TB model and $499.99 for the 2TB version. We recently reviewed this SSD, so if you want to check out our benchmarks and analysis, you can do so HERE.

The post Patriot Viper Steel RGB 3600MHz 32GB Memory Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Patriot is upgrading its popular Viper Steel series of memory to include RGB lighting, as is seemingly expected from every PC component in 2021. Featuring a black aluminium heatspreader with a top-mounted set of RGB LEDs and a diffuser lightbar, can the Patriot Viper Steel RGB memory prove to be a solid new option to the market?

The Patriot Viper Steel RGB memory module follows the same no-nonsense design logic of the standard non-RGB version of the RAM. Now, however, the aluminium heatspreader has been switched to a matte appearance with a grain-type texture while the Viper logo is coloured gold.

While the ‘Steel’ naming scheme now makes less sense given the black appearance, I personally feel that these styling adjustments are a good transition in creating a more attractive memory module. The black heatspreader looks sleek alongside the black PCB and, of course, retains it cooling functionality given the use of aluminium material.

Across the top of the roughly 48mm-tall memory module sits the RGB lightbar. This retains the aggressive angular styling of the non-RGB Viper Steel modules, but the height is now around 3mm taller for the LED-equipped kit.

It is difficult to tell exactly how many RGB LEDs sit underneath the lightbar. And that is a particularly important point given the perceived smoothness of the emitted light. Similarities to the light diffuser strip on the Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro modules are evident, and that’s strong praise for Patriot.

Lighting control is handled through the sync utilities of the big four motherboard vendors. We tested with ASUS AURA and found the functionality to be straightforward and effective. The lighting speed is good, the brightness is positive, and the granularity of control is solid.

Colour accuracy for the lightbar is also positive overall, though we did notice that our white colour selection displayed a slightly off-white tint. Other than that, I was also happy with the transitions between colours in the go-to RGB rainbow puke mode.

In terms of modules specs, Patriot offers a variety of options. The kit that we have for testing is a 32GB (2x16GB) capacity set with rated specifications of 3600MHz at 20-26-26-46 timings and 1.35V. Of course, XMP 2.0 is supported.

Those timings are incredibly slack for a modern 3600MHz dual channel memory kit, so it will be interesting to see if we are able to overclock to some tighter numbers. Of course, 3600MHz is still ideal for simple 1:1 memory controller to Infinity Fabric clock operation on AMD platforms. And any additional frequency through overclocking will be welcomed by Ryzen 5000 users with higher FCLK capabilities.

The specific memory chips used read as Hynix H5AN8G8N??R-VKC according to Thaiphoon Burner. That pair of question marks makes it unclear, but our contacts at Patriot confirmed that the kit uses SK Hynix “AFR” memory ICs with model code H5AN8G8NAFR-VKC. Those chips are deployed in a dual-rank configuration for each of the 16GB DIMMs.

Worth noting is that neither monitoring software such as HWiNFO nor Thaiphoon Burner could register any thermal sensor data on our test system.

In summary, we are looking at the Viper RGB Steel as a 32GB kit with a solid RGB implementation, 3600MHz running frequency and slack timings, and a price tag of £164.99 MSRP. Let’s have a look at how Patriot’s new set of memory performs.

  • Model Number: PVSR432G360C0K
  • Capacity: 32GB (2x 16GB)
  • Rated Frequency: DDR4-3600MHz
  • Rated Timings: 20-26-26-46
  • Voltage: 1.35V
  • Format: Non-ECC Unbuffered 288-pin DIMM

The post Top PCIe 4.0 SSDs of 2020! first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
2020 was the year that PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSDs truly arrived on the scene, bringing with them blisteringly fast performance. Unsurprisingly they make up the best SSD drives we seen this year. The only rather large fly in the ointment with PCIe Gen 4 drives, is that you need to (at the time of writing) invest in an AMD platform (AMD X570, B550 or TRX40 based motherboards) to use them at full speed, as Intel’s Rocket Lake platform has yet to make an appearance.

#7 – Corsair Force MP600

An earlier adopter of the new technology was Corsair, with the MP600. The MP600 uses a combination of a Phison PS5016-E16 controller and BiCS4 96-layer 3D TLC NAND. As PCIe Gen 4 drives tend to run very warm when being pushed, Corsair have fitted the drive with a large chunky heatsink which is easily detached, handy if you want to use your motherboard’s M.2 cooling system, if it possesses such a thing.

See the full Corsair Force MP600 review HERE.

#6 – Seagate FireCuda 520

Seagate has been building up the FireCuda gaming line for a while, but the FIreCuda 520 gave them an instant seat on the top table of performance drives. Another drive to use the Phison E16 controller and BiCS4 96-layer 3D TLC NAND (don’t worry, it’s a common thread among the first generation of Gen 4 drives). The FireCuda 520 comes in three capacities (500GB, 1TB and 2TB) and is rated up to 5,000MB/s for Sequential reads and 4,400MB/s for writes.

See the full Seagate FireCuda 520 review HERE.

#5 – Teamgroup T-Force Cardea Zero Z440

Another Gen 4 drive came from a company you may not be familiar with – Teamgroup. The Teamgroup T-Force Cardea Zero Z440, might be a mouthful of a name it is a very good drive. Only available in 1TB and 2TB versions, the drive uses a Phison PS5016-E16 controller together with BiCS4 96-layer 3D TLC NAND and is rated up to 5,000MB/s for reads and 4,400MB/s for writes.

See the full Teamgroup T-Force Cardea Zero Z440 review HERE.

#4 – Patriot Viper VP4100

The Viper VP4100 was Patriot’s entry into the PCIe Gen4 SSD market segment. The drive uses, yep you’ve guessed it, a combination of a Phison E16 controller and BiCS4 96-layer 3D TLC NAND. Patriot fitted the drive with a very well designed and compact aluminium heatsink but you’ll have your work cut out trying to remove it so the drive can be used in conjunction with any motherboard M.2 cooling solution.

As you can see the one thing all the above drives have in common is they all use Phison PS5016-E16 controller, hardly surprising as it was the first and for quite some time the only PCIe Gen4 controller available. Towards the year’s end we got our hands on a drive using the next generation of Phison Gen 4 controller, the PS5018-E18, from Sabrent in the shape of the Rocket 4 Plus.

See the full Patriot Viper VP4100 review HERE.

#3 – Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus

The Rocket 4 Plus combines the PS5018-E18 controller with Micron 96-Layer 3D TLC NAND to very good effect. It comes with some very impressive Sequential performance ratings; up to 7,100MB/s for reads and up to 5,300MB/s for writes. Helping to keep this monster cool is a copper heat spreader sitting under the drive label.

So what of the manufactures who are in the very fortunate position of being able to call on in-house products for the essential triad of NAND, controller and cache, such as Samsung and WD, what did they bring to the Gen 4 table? Well, it wasn’t until much later in the year we saw the drives from these two tech giants. First up in Q3 was the drive most people were waiting for, Samsung’s first Gen 4 drive, the Samsung SSD980 PRO followed in Q4 by WD's Black SN850.

#2 – Samsung SSD 980 PRO

The SSD 980 PRO brought with it a new controller named Elpis and the latest 1xx layer V-NAND (Samsung didn’t disclose the layer count but an educated guess puts it around the 128-layer mark) a combination which gave the drive official Sequential read/write performance figures of up to 7,000MB/s and 5,000MB/s respectively for the flagship 1TB drive.

See the full Samsung SSD 980 PRO review HERE.

#1 – WD Black SN850

Coming somewhat out of left field, WD’s first Gen 4 drive, the Black SN850 took many people by surprise and it is certainly a drive that lives up to WD’s high-performance Black label standards and is the fastest Black drive to date. Powered by a WD second-generation G-2 controller, the SN850 uses 96-layer BiCS4 3D TLC NAND giving the drive a Sequential read rating of up to 7,000MB/s with writes up to 5,300MB/s for the 1TB drive.

The post Patriot Viper Steel Series 3600MHz 64GB (2x32GB) Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
The rise in CPU performance that we have seen from mainstream, dual-channel optimised processors in the current generations has paved the way for higher capacity two-stick RAM kits. Offering 64GB of DDR4 capacity via a pair of 32GB DIMMs, Patriot’s Viper Steel kit sports a 3600MHz rated frequency with CL18 timings.

Designed with a no-nonsense, non-RGB style in mind, Patriot looks to be appealing to users who simply want a high-capacity memory kit without paying additional fees for unnecessary bells and whistles.

The 45mm-tall Viper Steel modules feature a gunmetal grey aluminium heatspreader designed to cool the double-sided RAM PCB. You get an angular styling and some degree of artwork, but nothing is overly excessive or outside of a neutral colour domain.

Pricing and availability of this 64GB 3600MHz kit looks to be limited in the UK. We found the kit on Amazon from a third-party seller for £269.99. Other websites have varying levels of availability from £217 to £237. Alternate.co.uk allowed us to add the kit to our basket with a price tag of £217.90.

With a 3600MHz rated frequency, we pull out our Ryzen 9 3950X test system (as this review was conducted prior to Ryzen 5000 launching) to run the Patriot Viper Steel Series memory kit. As has long been the case, 3600MHz is an excellent frequency choice for use with Zen 2 and Zen 3 thanks to the 1:1 memory controller clock to Infinity Fabric divider it permits.

Plus, 2x32GB makes a lot of sense for use with high-end Zen 2/3 processors that deliver adequate performance to justify the workstation-type usage of a 64GB memory kit.

A variety of capacity and speed options are available throughout Patriot’s Viper Steel Series DDR4 line-up. We are examining the 2x32GB 3600MHz 18-22-22-42 set that operates at 1.35V and is therefore suitable for both AMD and Intel platforms.

Dual 32GB DIMMs highlights the use of a PCB with dual-rank memory chips on both sides. According to Thaiphoon Burner, the specific ICs used are from SpecTek – a wholly owned division of Micron that is effectively the low-cost sibling.

According to the SpecTek website, their division was started in 1988 as a component-recovery group (read: re-badging and selling memory ICs that failed the Micron grading).

Specifications:

  • Model Number: PVS464G360C8K
  • Capacity: 64GB (2x 32GB)
  • Rated Frequency: DDR4-3600MHz
  • Rated Timings: 18-22-22-42
  • Voltage: 1.35V

The post Patriot P300 (Regional) 1TB NVMe SSD Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
The P300 is Patriot's latest NVMe drive, with the company hoping this SSD will be able to grab a share of the highly lucrative entry-level NVMe market segment. Using a Silicon Motion controller, and coming in a little over £110, is Patriot onto a winner?

There are two versions of the P300, the US (Phison PS5013-E13T controller) and Regional (Silicon Motion SM2263XT controller) and all versions use 96-layer 3D TLC NAND. Five models make up the P300 product lines; 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB (Patriot supplied us with a Regional version for review) and the flagship 2TB drive.

Sequential performance for the 1TB unit is stated as up to 2,100MB/s for reads and up to 1,650MB/s for writes. The entry model 128GB drive is rated as up to 1,600MB/s for reads and 600MB/s for writes. The 256GB and 512GB drives share the same 1,700MB/s read figure with the 256GB drive rated as up to 1,100MB/s for writes and the 512MB/s, a 100MB/s faster at 1,200MB/s. The flagship 2TB model shares the same Sequential read/write figures as the 1TB drive.

The 1TB drive is rated as up to 290,000 IOPs for random reads while writes are up to 260,000 IOPS. In fact, all five drives in the P300 line-up have the same 290,000 IOPS figure while the 256GB, 512GB and 2TB drive share the 260,000 IOPS figures. The 128GB drive makes do with a write 4K figure of up to 150,000K.

Power figures for the 1TB drive are 2.28W full speed and 0.38W for Idle.

The official endurance rating for the 1TB drive is 320TB TBW and Patriot back the drive with a 3-year warranty.

Patriot has released a new high-speed external SSD with three storage capacity options: 512GB, 1TB, and 2 TB. Aimed at those who need a portable high-speed storage device, the PXD SSD can also be used as external storage for your PS4 or Xbox One.

Weighing about 35g and measuring 103×31.5×9.7mm (LxWxH), the Patriot PXD SSD is for those in need of “large superfast storage in a compact design”. The latest PCIe Gen3 x4 Controller and the USB 3.2 Type-C interface allows the PXD to reach a sequential Read/Write (ATTO/CDM) of up to 1000MB/s.

Patriot says that external hard drives have been ‘plagued with performance issues', while flash drives are similarly not the best way to transfer large chunks of data. With its high-speed data transfer, the PXD will fill “the gap between internal and external SSDs”.

Patriot also emphasis the industrial-grade aluminium chassis with shock absorption materials. Included in the packaging there are Type-C to Type-A and Type-C to Type-C cables offering compatibility for most case scenarios.

Roger Shinmoto, the vice president of Patriot, claimed that “the PXD brings the perfect balance between” compatibility and user experience, as it can be used in desktop PCs, laptops, MacBooks and consoles. Aziz Saigal, Marketing Manager at Patriot, stated that the company plans to expand the Patriot PXD line.

Patriot PXD SSDs prices start at $99.99 for the 512GB option, $179.99 for the 1TB option, and $299.99 for the 2 TB option. You can learn more about the Patriot PXD SSDs HERE.

During CES 2020 we got our first look at a new gaming headset from Patriot Viper. The Viper V380 was unveiled at CES but today Patriot has officially made the headset available to purchase, well in the U.S at least.

The new Viper V380 gaming headset from Patriot is a big upgrade from the previous V370. The new V380 features Virtual 7.1 Surround Sound to deliver crystal clear audio quality with excellent environmental noise isolation for immersive hardcore gaming and theatre-grade audio playback experience.

The Headset is equipped with 53mm neodymium speaker drivers and is designed with an ergonomic concept of hinged and oversized ear cushions with a protein-leather headband to provide maximum comfort for gamers during long gaming sessions, or while just relaxing watching a 4K movie.

Another feature of the Viper V380 gaming headset is an omnidirectional microphone that includes environmental noise cancellation (ENC) capability. The V380’s microphone should provide excellent audio clarity for communicating with teammates even during intense multiplayer battles while cancelling out background noise interference.

Patriot Viper V380 headset features:

  • 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound with Hi-Fi 53 mm Neodymium Drivers
  • Ergonomic closed-ear design for passive noise cancellation and convenient on-ear volume controls
  • Omnidirectional, Detachable Environmental Noise Cancellation (ENC) Microphone
  • Customizable full-spectrum RGB illumination with Viper Software
  • USB Interface with durable braided 2.1 m cable

Not only does the Viper V380 gaming headset provide excellent audio quality, it looks great too since Patriot has enhanced the appearance with RGB lighting. The V380 can be customised with the full spectrum of RGB illumination, various pre-programmed lighting patterns and colours can be controlled via the Viper RGB software to synchronise the headset with your setup.

The Patriot Viper V380 Virtual 7.1 Surround Sound PC Gaming Headset is backed by a two-year warranty for peace of mind and can be purchased in the U.S now for $89.99.

Today at CES Luke and Leo visited Patriot, where we got a look at some new peripherals as well as a load of SSDs, which opened up an interesting discussion from Leo- what can we expect from next-gen SSD tech?

Patriot has released plenty of decent gaming peripherals over the years and in 2020, we'll be seeing an update in the headset space. The new Viper V380 gaming headset packs in virtual 7.1 surround sound audio, electronic noise cancellation for the microphone, Hi-Fi grade 53mm Neodymium drivers and RGB lighting on the ear cups.

Moving on from there, we have a bunch of SSDs to take a look at. Some of these first appeared last year, like the VP4100 and the VPN100, while others are brand new. We even get a sneak peek at some of the ‘next-gen' SSDs that Patriot is working on.

Starting off at the top, the VP4100, which we've reviewed previously. This is a PCIe Gen4 SSD with a Phison E16 controller, so speeds are incredibly fast, topping out at 5,000MB/s sequential read and 4,400MB/s sequential write speeds. Extra features include an external thermal sensor, low-profile heat shield and a 5-year warranty.

The VPN100 is also making a return from last year. This is a PCIe Gen3 M.2 SSD with a Phison E12 controller, so speeds aren't as fast but the trade off is a much lower price point. You can expect up to 3,450MB/s sequential read speeds and up to 3,000MB/s sequential write speeds. You can find more in our full review HERE.

The VPR100 is a similar SSD but it has a much sleeker look and benefits from RGB LEDs. It is based on some of the same tech as the VPN100, so expect a Phison E12 controller and NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 interface, but speeds aren't quite as high, topping out at 3,300MB/s sequential read speeds and 2,900MB/s sequential write speeds.

The Patriot P300 is a brand new SSD and is intended to sit in the mid-tier PCIe Gen 3×4 NVMe market. It will offer 25 percent higher transfer speeds and IOPs compared to PCIe 3×2 solutions, all while sticking to the M.2 form factor for easy installation in desktops and laptops.

The Patriot P210 and P220 are both next-gen 2.5″ SSDs. The P210 uses a 2259 Next Gen controller and features static and dynamic wear levelling, while the P220 is an extension of the Patriot Burst SSD lineup. The P210 is being developed to be a cost effective SSD with capacities up to 2TB, while the P220 will use the Phison S12 controller and can utilise both TLC and QLC NAND. The P220 will come in capacities up to 4TB.

The Patriot EVLVR 2 is a next-gen Thunderbolt 3 external SSD with sequential read/write speeds of up to 2850MB/s and 2600MB/s respectively. The Patriot PXD will be a cheaper alternative, offering external SSD speeds of up to 1000MB/s sequential read and 1000MB/s sequential write speeds.

The Viper VP4100 is Patriot's first PCIe 4.0 SSD. Built on an M.2 2280 format, the drive uses a combination of a Phison PS5016-E16 controller and Toshiba BiCS4 3D TLC NAND. Priced at £349.99, is this worth buying if you've moved over to the X570 platform?

The VP4100 takes over as the flagship SSD drive in Patriot's Viper gaming division product line from the PCIe Gen3 X4 Viper VPN100 (which we reviewed here). At the heart of the new drive is one of Phison's PS5016-E16 controller's, the world's first PCIe Gen4 x4 controller. The 8-channel controller looks after the Toshiba BiCS4 96-layer 3D TLC NAND that the drive uses. There is also 1GB of DDR-2400 cache.

The Viper VP4100 line comprises just two capacities (at the time of writing this review), the 1TB model and the flagship 2TB drive. Both drives have the same official Sequential and random 4K performance. The Sequential figures are up to 5,000MB/s for reads and up to 4,400MB/s for writes. Random 4K performance for the drives is rated as up to a very impressive 800,000 IOPS for both reads and writes.

Endurance wise the 1TB drive has a TBW figure of 1,800TB and Patriot backs the drive with a 5-year warranty.

The post Patriot Viper Steel DDR4-4400MHz 16GB (2x8GB) Memory Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
The memory frequency capabilities of AMD and Intel platforms have risen significantly with successive new platform and processor releases. Speeds in excess of 4,000MHz are now not uncommon with the right motherboard, a high-end CPU and little user effort.

Enter Patriot's Viper Steel DDR4 memory, registering in with frequencies of up to 4,400MHz using XMP profiles, it's now easier than ever before for enthusiasts to squeeze every last drop of performance out of their system. The Viper Steel series from Patriot spans 3,000 to 4,400MHz in 8GB or 16GB modules, though the faster frequencies are limited to 8GB modules.

4,400MHz, the effective memory frequency of this review's test subject, is absurdly fast even by modern standards and still requires careful planning to get up and running without compatibility issues. Case in point is the fact testing failed to even get through the POST check above 4,000MHz on the ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming X or EVGA Z390 FTW motherboards.

It wasn't until KitGuru revisited the excellent MSI Z390 MEG ACE motherboard that testing with the Patriot Viper Steel memory at 4,400MHz was even possible. Yet, MSI tentatively only lists compatibility with this specific memory kit (PVS416G440C9K) when running the second slower 4,266MHz profile, not the primary 4,400MHz profile. System stability at 4,400MHz was possible, but it wasn't exactly “plug and play” as it required some tweaking of voltages to achieve stability.

Anyone in the market for a memory kit this fast, 4,000MHz or higher, really ought to be checking through the memory compatibility list of prospective motherboard choices.

Patriot have kept the design of the Viper Steel simple, and that's something that will resonate with many buyers who are tired of the RGB fad that has swept across the industry. The packaging reflects that simplicity.

The Viper Steel DDR4 memory modules look the same in all frequencies and capacities, they use a silver aluminium heat-spreader (unfortunately, not steel) and have a matte-black PCB. Both sides of the module have stylistic patterns and cut-outs, and are embellished in the middle with the viper's head that is emblematic of the Patriot Viper Gaming brand.

RGB is omitted on this model which is reflected in the fact that the cost is more competitive (in the UK at least) than equivalent speed and capacity kits from rival brands such as Corsair and G.Skill.

There is a thermal pad for some heat transfer between the memory ICs and the metal casing, but modern memory modules do not produce a great deal of heat even when pushed to the limit. That outer casing feels flimsy, even if it is metal, and after removing and replacing the modules into numerous motherboards for testing, the casing fell apart from the modules and had to be squeezed back together again. Not an excellent sign of build quality.

The height of the modules is 45mm, which is quite tall, so may be incompatible with some larger air CPU coolers. However, many system builders now have moved towards all-in-one liquid coolers which now dominate the high-performance CPU cooling market, so this shouldn't be an issue.

The memory ICs used are Samsung B-dies, the specific part number is “K4A8G085WB-BCPB” which has been used in a number of high-performance memory kits from big name memory brands.

Patriot’s gaming division, Viper, launched its first venture into Gen 4 PCIe M.2 SSDs this month. Like other PCIe 4.0 SSDs, this one boasts very impressive specs, with read speeds of up to 5GB/s, giving the VP4100 a ten fold increase on traditional  SATA SSDs.

With the latest Ryzen 3000 and X570 platforms supporting PCIe Gen 4 we are sure to see a plethora of PCIe 4.0 M.2 devices being released in the coming months. Viper has been quick to set out their stall in this fierce market.  The VP4100 follows a similar theme to the recent Corsair MP600 with a chunky black heatsink design and white graphics. However, unlike Corsair, the Viper VP4100 is sporting a blue PCB instead of a black one.

Aesthetic differences aside, the VP4100 boasts excellent performance statistics, including sequential read/write speeds of up to 5000 MB/s and 4400 MB/s respectively. In addition, this drive is rated for 800K random IOPS peak read/write speeds, which is around 50K higher than other devices based on the same controller.

The Viper VP4100 is equipped with Phison’s PS5016-E16 controller along with 3D TLC NAND memory. To ensure the Patriot Viper VP4100 is consistent under high load, it has been fitted with an external temperature monitoring sensor and more obviously the black Aluminium heatsink.

Available in either 1TB and 2TB variants with a M.2-2280 form factor and a super slim and compact 3mm height, the Viper VP4100 will fit into almost any system build.

The Patriot Viper VP4100 is backed by a 5 year manufacturer’s warranty and TBW (Terabytes written) rating of 1800TB per 1TB. That’s good news and should mean the device is built to last. The Viper VP4100 is available now in both 1TB and 2TB versions via Amazon UK for £349.99 and £449.99 respectively.

KitGuru says: No doubt the performance statistics of the Patriot Viper VP4100 will appeal to enthusiasts and hardcore gamers, although the blue PCB could be divisive. What do you all think of the Viper VP4100? Are any of you looking to make the jump to a PCIe 4.0 SSD?

After AMD's big announcements at the start of the week, a lot of focus at Computex 2019 has been on X570 motherboards and PCIe 4.0. Patriot is another brand who is releasing a new SSD to take advantage of PCIe 4.0, and we also saw a new gaming headset from the company.

Starting with the SSD, at the moment this drive is only known as the ‘PCIe Gen4 X 4 M.2 SSD', so we're still waiting for a confirmed product name. It's a standard M.2 2280 format and is built around the same Phison E16 controller as Corsair's Force MP600 and Gigabyte's Aorus drive we saw earlier in the week.

The Patriot drive is currently rated for sequential read speeds of up to 4800MB/s, and sequential writes up to 4000MB/s. It will also have up to 2GB DDR4 DRAM cache (depending on capacity), while there will be 500GB, 1TB and 2TB models. Availability is expected in Q3 this year.

We also got to see Patriot's new Viper V380 virtual 7.1 surround-sound headset. This sports 50mm drivers, while each earcup is home to an attractive RGB strip to give the headset some extra pizzazz. Patriot has also worked hard on the omni-directional mic which has electronic noise cancellation (ENC) built-in – designed for esports teams to be able to hear each other clearly, with minimal background noise.

Other features worth noting include the hinged earcups, as well as the braided 2.2m USB cable. Patriot is also working on an accompanying stand which will recognise that the headset has been docked, and will then automatically switch your sound output to any available speakers – but we don't have further information on this at the moment. Availability for the V380 is again expected in Q3.

KitGuru says: It's good to see Patriot come up with its own PCIe 4.0 SSD, and it will be interesting to see just how fast it is when it is made available later this year.

The post Patriot Viper VPN100 1TB SSD Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
It's been a very long time since we last looked at a Patriot NVMe SSD – it was actually the Hellfire from way back in 2017 to be exact. Today, however, we can present our review of Patriot's latest SSD, the VPN100, which sits in the company's Viper Gaming portfolio. Is it up to snuff when compared against the competition?

The Viper VPN100 range consists of four capacities, the entry 256GB model, 512GB, 1TB (the drive we are looking at here) and a flagship 2TB drive. The first thing you notice about the drive is the massive, well engineered passive cooler that comes attached to it.

At the heart of the VPN100 sits a Phison PS5012-E12 controller. The PS5012-E12 is Phison's second generation PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe controller. The 8-channel controller is built on a TSMC 28nm process and has been designed to work with TLC and QLC NAND technologies with support for Phison’s SmartECC and the latest LDPC (Low-Density Parity Check) error correction as well as AES256, TCG OPAL and TCG Pyrite hardware encryption support. With 8 NAND channels and 32 NAND chip enable lines, the maximum amount of NAND the controller can support is 8TB.

Patriot quote Sequential performance figures for the 1TB drive as up to 3,450MB/s for reads and up to 3,000MB/s for writes. The quoted 4K random read/write figures for the 1TB are very impressive at up to 700,000 IOPS for both reads and writes.

The 1TB VPN100's endurance is rated at 1665TB TBW and Patriot backs the drive with a 3-year warranty.

Back at CES, we had the chance to catch up with Patriot and its subsidiary, VIPER Gaming. While we were roaming the booth, we caught a sneak peek at the Viper VPN100, a new NVMe PCIe Gen 3 SSD with capacities between 256GB and 2TB. Now, just a couple of short months later, this SSD is hitting the market.

Sometimes it can take several months or even years for CES products to finally hit store shelves. This is not the case with the Viper VPN100. The M.2 SSD is available from now, promising super fast speeds, better heat dissipation and high capacities.

The VPN100 is built using the Phison E12 PCIe Gen 3×4 NVMe controller and comes with its own pre-installed aluminium heat shield to keep it operating at peak speeds for longer periods of time. There is also an external thermal sensor, so you can keep a better eye on temperatures.

Using the 1TB version as the lead example for performance, buyers can expect up to 3,000MB/s write speeds and up to 3,450MB/s read speeds. The random read/write IOPs rating comes in at 600K, so this SSD has massive throughput capabilities.

The VIPER Gaming VPN100 SSD will come in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB options. We don't have UK or EU pricing just yet, but over in the US, these will cost $79.99, $137.99, $244.99 and $499.99 respectively.

KitGuru Says: I'm running a 512GB Samsung 960 Evo at the moment but I've been looking into getting something with a bit more space. Are any of you looking to make a big SSD upgrade this year? How much would you be willing to spend on a 2TB M.2 SSD?

We stopped by at the Patriot Memory suite for our final stop at CES today, taking a look at new SSDs, RAM and peripherals for the PC market.

First up is the Burst SSD, which is your standard SATA 2.5-inch drive. As you would expect, speeds top out at 560Mbps on sequential read speeds and 540Mbps for sequential write speeds. The Viper VPN100 is a little more interesting, as it is an NVMe PCIe Gen 3 SSD with capacities between 256GB and 2TB. It even comes shrouded in its own heatsink, which will hopefully assist in better cooling and longer peak performance.

The Evlvr is also quite neat. This is an external SSD but rather than running on USB, it uses Thunderbolt 3, which paves the way for much faster transfer speeds.

The Viper V550 and V551 are code names that we have seen in the past. The latest revisions make the mouse a lot sleeker, with very tastefully done RGB lighting strips on both. Meanwhile, Patriot is also getting in on the RGB craze with some of its memory. The Viper RGB RAM modules have an RGB light bar at the top, and run the gamut in speeds and capacities, with some kits reaching as high as 4133MHz.

Finally, the Patriot Scorch is a new SSD, built using the M.2 form factor. The version we saw on show today is 512GB, with a Phison 5008 controller, an NVMe 1.2/PCIe Gen 3 interface and blazing fast speeds. For read speeds, this drive is capable of reaching up to 1,700MB/s and on write speeds, it is capable of going as high as 950MB/s, making it a good chunk faster than a SATA equivalent.

KitGuru Says: The V550 and V551 both look very nice with the newly implemented RGB lighting. Meanwhile, the Patriot Scorch sounds like an excellent performer on paper, it would be interesting to see one in for review at some point.

Putting its newfound lighting expertise to good use, Patriot has returned to the RAM world by introducing its brand new Viper RGB DDR4 series of memory. Despite being a treat for the eyes with its multiple lighting zones, Patriot is keen not to sacrifice its reputation for performance, offering its 16GB kits from 2,666MHz up to 4,133MHz.

The multiple lighting zones give Patriot’s new RGB memory an edge of customisability, fully programmable with the bundled Viper RGB control software. This includes pre-programmed effects such as the standard breathing, heartbeat and raindrop settings that help highlight its distinct “fanged” design, protruding from each corner.

While Patriot doesn’t mention any specific software by name, it states that its new memory kits are “fully compatible with the major motherboards’ RGB control software apps, allowing the RGB Lighting to be synchronized between VIPER RGB memory and motherboard”. Presumably this includes ASUS Aura Sync, Gigabyte AORUS RGB Fusion and MSI Mystic Light, with Patriot’s own software only needed when used independently.

If you cannot see the above gallery, please consider disabling AdBlock as this is known to conflict with our imaging code.

Patriot has ensured that its new memory is up to date, compatible with the latest platforms from both Intel and AMD, as well as supporting XMP 2.0 memory profiles. Each kit is designed with overclocking in mind, with the company claiming that its new heat spreader design offers “excellent thermal dissipation to maintain greater stability under heavy loads”.

Patriot cut its teeth in the RGB world with the introduction of its Viper V770 Keyboard and Viper V570 mice last year, offering some of the most vibrant options on the market. It’s only natural that the company applies this same knowhow to better rival competition such as G.Skill’s Trident Z RGB and Corsair Vengeance RGB kits.

Patriot’s Viper RGB 16GB (2x8GB) kits are readily available on the market, starting at $179.99, up until $299.99 for its high-end 4,133MHz kit.

KitGuru Says: I’ve voiced in the past that I am a big fan of G.Skill’s Trident Z RGB design, but having seen Patriot’s RGB peripherals first hand, I’m inclined to believe that the new Viper kits will bring some serious competition. What do you think of Patriot’s latest memory design?

So far, Patriot has proven itself as a contender in the high-end peripheral market with its flagship V570 mouse and V770 keyboard offering feature-packed additions to its line-up. The V730 keyboard instead fills the mid-range portion of its Viper range, offering mechanical switches for a competitive price, but can Patriot stack up against established brands in the lower end market?

Despite its relatively low cost of £70/$80, Patriot assures fans that the V730 is, in fact, the perfect starter mechanical keyboard and that’s easy to believe considering it manages to pack Kailh Brown switches and full N-key rollover alongside media keys and customisable lighting effects powered by red LEDs.

As just about every manufacturer has entered the peripheral game, it’s becoming more and more difficult to stand out while catering to all ends of the market. Patriot’s Viper line has already proven itself to contend with the best thanks to its feature-packed V570 flagship, but does the V560 have what it takes to edge its way into the mid-range market?

Compared to its big brother, the Patriot Viper V560 Mouse sports a relatively traditional design, swapping out the extra buttons for a minimalistic style akin to other mice on the market. Despite toning things down on the outside, however, Patriot has kept its build as premium as possible with Omron switches, a Sonix MCU, and an Avago ADNS9800 laser sensor, all while keeping the price at a low $39.99.

Specifications

  • Connectivity Technology: Wired
  • Tracking: Laser Sensor
  • OS Support: Windows® 10
  • Dimensions: (WxHxD) 80 x 47 x 128 mm
  • Weight: 193 grams (up to 222.4g with weights)
