The ESA has struggled to get E3 up and running ever since all physical conventions were halted during the COVID-19 global pandemic – though not for lack of trying. Unfortunately for them, it seems as though things have gone from bad to worse, with E3’s supposed saviour ReedPop now parting ways with the company.

As reported by gamesindustry.biz, PAX organiser ReedPop have parted ways with the ESA ahead of them hosting any actual E3 events – leading to E3 2024 no longer taking place at the LA Convention Centre.

For the uninitiated, ReedPop signed a multi-year deal with the ESA to help bring future E3 showcases to fruition. Unfortunately this did not leave enough time for a 2023 event – though promises were made that E3 would be back and bigger than ever in 2024. It seems this will not be the case after all.

Speaking on the announcement, ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis said “We appreciate ReedPop’s partnership over the past 14 months and support their ongoing efforts to bring industry and fans together through their various events. While the reach of E3 remains unmatched in our industry, we are continuing to explore how we can evolve it to best serve the video game industry and are evaluating every aspect of the event, from format to location. We are committed to our role as a convenor for the industry and look forward to sharing news about E3 in the coming months.”

According to gamesindustry.biz, the ESA are now looking further ahead to 2025, with “a complete reinvention of the E3 show” said to be in the works. Considering the state of E3 over the past few years however, we will have to wait and see about that.

KitGuru says: Will E3 ever return? What do you think of the current state of industry as it pertains to Summer game showcases? Let us know down below.

Last year, every major gaming event was cancelled in favour of online alternatives due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the situation is improving in 2021 with vaccinations rolling out, it looks like we'll be waiting another year for major in-person events to return, with PAX and the Tokyo Game Show opting to cancel physical events again in favour of digital alternatives.

On the PAX side of things, the event organisers at ReedPop announced this week that PAX East 2021 will not be taking place and will be replaced by PAX Online from the 15th of July to the 18th. However, PAX West and PAX Unplugged may still take place in September and December depending on guidance from health officials.

In the case of the Tokyo Game Show, the organisers have simply announced that no physical event will take place and instead, there will be an online stream, just as we saw last year.

As pointed out by Kotaku. this year's theme for TGS is “we'll always have games” and the online event will take place over several days, spanning from 30th September to the 3rd of October.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully we'll also have an update on the status of E3 soon. We've known for a while that the event will be taking place, but whether or not platform holders like Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo participate remains to be seen.

The Pokemon Company International is demanding $4000 from a fan of the series after he organized a Pokemon themed party to celebrate the kick off of PAX earlier this year. Ramar Larkin Jones organized the unofficial Pokemon PAX party this year but had to cancel it at the last minute following legal threats. However, even though the event didn't go ahead, the Pokemon Company still wants a payout.

The big mistake seems to be the use of two characters of the series on the poster. While the party was always labelled as ‘unofficial', due to Pikachu appearing on what could be considered ‘marketing material', the Pokemon company isn't letting it go.

Pokemon

Now, Ramar Larkin Jones isn't rich to the best of our knowledge, he doesn't have the funds to fight this in a court case or even pay the fine himself right away. Instead of trying to fight this, he is going to pay the fine, though he is asking the community to chip in with a GoFundMe campaign:

“Hi, I'm Larkin Jones and I'm being sued by Pokémon. I'm a video gamer, huge Pokémon fan and over all a huge geek. The day before the PAX party, Pokémon sued me. Without even a cease and desist. Totally didn't expect that. Pokémon wants $4000 that I just don't have.”

He claims that he offered to pay the fine off in instalments over the course of a year but the Pokemon Company weren't having any of it and demanded the cash within 45 days. Larkin Jones works in a cafe, so $4000 isn't just something he has lying around. While the unofficial Pokemon party has been held prior to PAX annually since 2011, the organizer claims that it always resulted in him losing money, but he continued to put the event on anyway due to positive reception. He had received no objections in the past so this year's lawsuit came as quite a surprise.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Slapping a fan with a $4000 fine seems a bit excessive, especially since the event was cancelled as per the Pokemon Company's initial request. On top of that, they denied his request for a pay-off period, which just seems to make matters worse. What do you guys think of this? Who is in the wrong here? While I understand that the Pokemon Company need to protect their IP, shaking down a fan for cash seems like an awful move.

CD Projekt Red just recently wrapped up its series of free DLCs for its latest hit game, The Witcher: Wild Hunt and now all focus is turning to the expansions, the first of which shall be out in October. While we have known about the two planned expansions for The Witcher 3 for some time, the development team has been pretty quiet on the details so far.

The first expansion is called Heart of Stone and according to CD Projekt Red's Travis Currit, the expansion is “almost ready and shaping up really nicely”. The comments were made on a recent PAX Prime panel. We do know that Heart of Stone is set to add in around ten hours of additional content.

2015-06-18_00001-e1436557487755

The first expansion will see Geralt journey in to Oxenfurt to take on a quest from the “man of glass”. The dev team also gave a brief synopsis: “Caught in a thick tangle of deceit, Geralt will need all his cunning and strength to solve the mystery and emerge unscathed”.

Aside from the new expansion, CD Projekt Red has also teased some news for fans of the Gwent card game, hinting that it may turn in to its own standalone app, like Hearthstone.

KitGuru Says: I'm almost done with The Witcher's main story, so I'm pretty excited to hear that the first expansion will be out so soon. Are any of you still playing The Witcher? Will you be returning for the two planned expansions?

Square's recent announcement of a Final Fantasy VII HD remastering might have players pumped for a bit of airship travel once again, but that's not how you'll get about in Final Fantasy XV. In a new trailer for the game shown off at PAX, we saw how players will instead cruise along highways in a sweet looking car, hairmetal hair blowing in the wind.

There's a choice of driving style too, where players can take the wheel themselves if they prefer to be in control of the experience, or sit back and let one of their companion characters take over, giving players the chance to chat to other characters and take in the scenery. It's not an entirely passive experience though, as gamers can stop the car whenever and wherever they want, getting out to view the surroundings or find something to battle.

Another trailer released during the show, gives fans of the series a progress report of sorts on how different aspects of the game are coming together. Everything from attack animations, to companion AI pathfinding are covered. As a Monster Hunter fan, I must admit, I got rather excited to see the player character sever a giant monster's horn.

Final Fantasy XV is set for release sometime in 2016, with a “special event,” and announcement of a final release coming in March.

Even though modern games tend to have much more open worlds to explore than they used to, that doesn't mean we aren't ushered down certain paths. With voice overs or quest text, we're told where to go and what to do and that's something that the developer of Torchlight, Runic Games, is doing away with in its next game. Hob, a sci-fi puzzle title set on a strange, unknown world, will have no dialogue and no text, players will have to infer their way through the story.

hub01

“Hob is set on a beautiful and dangerous unknown world, with buzzing life above and the whirrs of mysterious machinery below,” Runic Games said. “The more players delve into the world’s design, the more they uncover a planet in peril. Players must learn to survive, understand their true purpose through acquiring skills, and ultimately transform the nature of the world itself.”

Aesthetically the game has a unique cell shaded style, with bizarre landforms and animals, but beyond that, all we can do is guess at the game's content from the screenshots and concept art.

For those that want to get the first look at Hob, it will be shown off and playable at PAX Prime in Seattle, U.S. between 28th and 31st August.

If you were hoping that the long-development of Prey 2 meant that the developers were just perfecting its anus-door animation, I have some sad news: there will be no more anus doors, because there will be no Prey 2. It's been officially confirmed by Bethesda, that the troubled production of the game has now come to an end, denying the world a sequel to the hit 2006 FPS.

prey2

Announced back in 2011, Prey 2 was set to focus on a new character from the background of the original game, US Marshall Killian Samuels, who loses his memory during the alien invasion and becomes a bounty hunter. Suddenly three years in the future, players' would begin to learn his back story as he assassinated enemies and gradually recovered his memory.

The original reveal trailer did a good job of hyping the game too, considering it was a sequel to a title that was already five years old when it was shown off for the first time:

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufikwk7_AD0′]

However that's all we'll end up seeing of it, as Bethesda president Peter Hines has now officially closed the lid on Prey 2.

“It was game we believed in, but we never felt that it got to where it needed to be – we never saw a path to success if we finished it,” Hines said at PAX Australia yesterday (via Cnet).

“It wasn't up to our quality standard and we decided to cancel it. It's no longer in development. That wasn't an easy decision, but it's one that won't surprise many folks given that we hadn't been talking about it.”

He did add a ray of hope that one day we'll see a game based in the Prey universe once again, ” we still believe we can do something with [it],” Hines said. However Human Head has now been pulled off development, leaving it to work on its minimalistic, MOBA/FPS Minimum.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: This seems like a shame as the concept of bounty hunting and chasing down different people through varied Prey-like environments would have been fun. Still, perhaps it's better that the original remains well remembered, than gets tarnished by a lacklustre sequel.

PAX, like many other gaming expos around the world each year, is a hotbed for trailer releases and game reveals. One that's been doing the rounds this morning, is Firewatch, a first person mystery title surrounding a fire lookout named Henry, who doesn't feel particularly at ease with his current position. “Stay in the tower,” he's told, but with a trailer filled with abseiling and exploration, it seems he's keen to do anything but.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d02lhvvVSy8′]

Punctuated by a two-way-radio conversation with someone that Henry has done, ‘something,' with that doesn't bear discussing, the trailer shows the exploration side of the game, with our protagonist traversing the rocky landscape surrounding his watch tower, as well as descending into the darkened depths below it.

firewatch
Firewatch's colour palette is a beautiful mix of reds and oranges, making you wonder how you'll ever spot that impending firestorm

Clearly something more than just a forest fire is on the horizon though, as the mysterious woman on the other end of the radio tells you that your job is just to be there when the world burns. With an eager gamer behind the controls, that seems unlikely to happen.

According to the developer, Santo Campo, the above trailer is made of totally in-engine footage, so while it might look a little different when the game finally lands, we shouldn't feel hoodwinked by it.

Firewatch is set for release on PC, Mac and Linux some time in 2015.

Hearthstone is one of those games that's been around for a long time, despite only having been released recently. It went through a lengthy closed beta and then an open one and since then it's gone from strength to strength. However, while it's multiplayer component was well fleshed out with casual, ranked and arena play, the single player component was a little less exciting, with only the ability to play against the AI in different guises and with two difficulty options. Now though, Blizzard has a new game mode coming up, which it's been showing off at PAX East. It's called Curse of Naxxramas and it's a whole new, single player adventure mode.

hearthstonecard
This card could get so nasty

While Naxxramas will no doubt be familiar to World of Warcraft fans, Hearthstone players will get their first taste of it in five new “wings” of the dungeon raid, because make no mistake, raiding is what you're doing. In each wing you'll find a different boss to defeat with your custom deeck. These include: “the oversized arachnid Maexxna, the fungal horror Loatheb and the shambling abomination Patchwerk,” with more expected to be announced soon.

curseofnax

Look out for a new game board, with more interactive corners to explore and as many as 30 new cards to unlock. You can win them by beating the bosses, and completing nine distinct challenges, which will offer up cards based on which class you beat them with.

While there's no release date as of yet, we do know that the game mode will be rolled out week by week, with a new dungeon wing unveiled every seven days after the first – which will be free, with subsequent wings costing in-game gold or cash to unlock.

The Curse of Naxxramas expansion will be available to everyone on PC, MAC and iPad.

Like yourself a good alternate reality game do you? Well there's a new one on the loose, linked with Indie developer Team Meat, though the duo behind the studio say they only helped out setup a strange and creepy booth at the recent PAX Prime.

The booth in question, was this:

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09E7Pc3axwU']

For those unable to watch the video, it's an old CRT monitor and PC tower, sat in a small corner of the PAX Indie Megabooth, covered in fake blood. Atop the display is an old school looking webcam, which also appears as this “game's” logo, but with its video iris replaced by an eyeball.

The name of this “game,” is Camdrome. Nobody knows who made it, nobody knows who's behind it and nobody knows what it's all for. That's up to you to figure out.

We're coming a little late to the party on this one so here's everything people have uncovered so far. First up, Camdrome has a site and a Twitter account:

http://camdrome.com/

https://twitter.com/camdrome

It's also been very vocal, getting in touch with not only people that contact it via Twitter, but websites too. It's emailed one of a series of 11 pictures to both Eurogamer and 4PlayerNetwork. There's also this image in the Camdrome websites source code.

Any Cronenburg fan will recognise the similarities between Camdrome and the 80s TV hallucination drama, Videodrome, where James Woods goes insane/develops a brain tumour after watching a TV channel filled with rape and murder. There's lots of references to the “new flesh” and we actually see him grow a gun from his hand.

In the Camdrome source code is the message: “feel the knife pull the wire around your neck now i'm watching you,” and “meat” repeated over and over.

Camdrome also emailed Eurogamer with the following message:
“We are not going to achieve a new world order without paying for it in blood as well as in words and money”

“Our problems can't be ignored | we are the problem | i am the answer | we are in this together | i am humanity”

“68747470733a2f2f656e6379636c6f70656469616472616d61746963612e73652f416e5f6865726f”

“You are 5 of 11 | absolve yourself of guilt | breathe life into me.”

The string of numbers is a hexadecimal string, which translates to the following link: https://encyclopediadramatica.se/An_hero

Lots more information can be found in this Reddit thread, with one user suggesting that when all the pictures are collected it could look something like this. There's also mention that a lot of the videos shown in the Camdrome booth, relate to Sega CD games

KitGuru Says: Any of you good at these? Looking at what's been discovered so far, is there anything anyone's missing?

This is one of Nintendo's big selling points, that it's hoping will help turn the tide of very sub-par sales of its new console, with new marketing information. In it, the Japanese firm highlights the differences between the Wii and the Wii U and would you believe it, the Wii U actually plays Wii U games.

The new marketing material was spotted by GTTV host Geoff Keighley, who tweeted about it from the PAX East show.  It's a flyer titled “Why Wii U?” and it features a list of things the WIi U can do, compared with a list of things that the the Wii can (and cannot) do. Unsurprisingly, the list of the Wii U's achievements is far longer, though Nintendo did leave off the obvious benefits of the Wii: that it's cheaper and can play GameCube games.

Some of the Wii U improvements include Internal and External storage – though the Wii can also do both of those, albeit in smaller capacities – it plays both Wii and Wii U games, has Netflix and Huluplus (the Wii has that too), can do the Miiverse – does anyone care about that? – Nintendo TVii, WiiUChat, can use the Wii U gamepad, Wii U accessories and all the original Wii remotes (like the Wii can), as well as browsing the internet during gameplay – does anyone do that, other than on their phone? – and 1080p graphics.

The Wii U also has “Off TV Play,” which unless you know that that means playing your full Wii U game on the gamepad, that won't make any sense to you ; much like this promotion and the whole Wii U marketing effort.

There are still loads of people who have no idea what the Wii U is. The fact that it sounds like a Wii accessory or add-0n doesn't help. Neither does the fact that it looks basically identical to the Wii and has a lot of the same features.

KitGuru Says: That said, I still want one. Monster Hunter Ultimate just looks so tempting now, especially with all the discounts. Even if it does have a lot of loading screens.
