Rumours are curious things. They can start anywhere and, depending on who's transmitting them, will either grow in the psyche or wither away quickly. KitGuru's heard something very interesting about AMD's traditional CPU lines. Is it true?

While there is still significant inventory of AMD's basic dual core and quad core parts in the various channels around the world, there can be no doubt how much more attractive the Fusion and Bulldozer parts are likely to be over the next 6 months.

Here's a question for all you budding production plant/inventory/logistics managers: If you had a solid integrated solution for the mass-market and the world's first consumer 8 core parts about to arrive, how much of your limited production capacity would you set aside to make chips designed several years ago?

From what we're hearing right now, none.

At this point, we'd normally expect a mini-barrage of emails declaring undying love/support/production for the old chips etc, but – looking at it objectively – how much production space will Apple be giving to iPhone 4 once it launches iPhone 5?

Will Phenom X2 and X4 be no more? Depends if Fusion and Bulldozer deliver

KitGuru says: We hope this rumour is true. Customers who were buying low-end X2 and X4 CPUs would still need basic graphics on the mainboard chipset or buy an entry level graphic card – both of which are redundant with Fusion. If you were buying more expensive X4 chips, then don't. The X6 range is better and Bulldozer promises much more. It is possible that AMD is temporarily moving production focus to the new chips, and that's the source of the rumour.

Today AMD release their new Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition processor, the successor to the ever popular 1090T Black Edition. As the 1100T doesn't look that exciting on paper (with a 100mhz clock increase), we felt we would approach this review from a slightly different angle – taking our readers on a ‘step by step' guide to see how far we could push the chip with some hardcore air cooling.

The AMD Phenom II X6 processors have been a favourite with the ‘value aware' performance enthusiast audience … people who love the idea of having six physical cores, but are unwilling to pay Intel £700 for the pleasure. There is no doubting that Intel's Core i7 970 and Core i7 980X are the performance leaders, but at £705 and £730 inc vat respectively they can seriously sap your bank balance.

When you compare this against the wallet friendly X6 1100T's £225 inc vat asking price you can begin to understand the appeal of the unlocked AMD processors.

A large portion of the audience reading this today will be focusing on the overclocking capabilities of the new chip and many may also be moving up from a 1055T, the cheaper AMD ‘locked' alternative. We aim to cover as many overclocking performance bases today as possible, and hopefully by the end of the article you will be better educated as to what you can expect from AMD's latest and greatest, if you spend a little extra money on system cooling.

Whenever a deal comes together, you can look at the component parts and make some kind of guess as to how the reduction was made possible. KitGuru gets tons of emailed offers every day, but this one grabbed our attention. Here's why.

The deal itself is for a CPU with a mainboard and memory, more about the detail later. First, let's do a quick once-over on the component types.

Mainboards
Mainboards are horribly complicated things. Often, they sell for the same money as a simple product like a chassis. Engineering on a chassis is a frame with a skin and some LEDs. Engineering on a mainboard is something altogether more complex. Given a choice, would you rather manufacture metal boxes or multi-layer printer circuit boards with loads of sensitive components and a constant need for driver updates? You see our point.

RAM
Memory is at once complex and simple. The first one can cost a fortune, but every module after that is produced commodity style. This stuff is well tested, reliable and – if it works well – pretty dull. It's one of the components you NEVER want to notice in your PC. Price wise, it is traded globally in huge volume and the patterns for this trading are well known. Normal movement is in the +/- 10% range.

Windows
Pricing on the OS is stable. There are no dodgy copies on sale from the major retailers and you're unlikely to install it only to find a Compaq/HP logo on the boot screen. Windows 7 Home Premium is a known product with a known price.

Processors
Now we're into the land of significant movements. Intel decided to can the i7 920 and 930 chips, so it simply repositioned the 950 into the exactly the same price bracket. Deals on CPUs are always great value, because they involve larger movements in one go. AMD's Phenom II X6 1055 processor has been a popular choice for enthusiasts looking for a 3.7GHz OC, and the pricing has been pretty stable.

OK, enough background, what do we think we're seeing with this Dabs deal?

Well, the offer is for Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium,  mainboard, memory and AMD Phenom II X6 processor and offers £70 off.  KitGuru is no maths genius, but we know that you can't easily lose that money from a mainboard. operating system or memory.

So, there you have it. KitGuru suspects that the Phenom II X6 processors are becoming more competitively priced in time for Xmas. We might be wrong, but it seems hard to lose £70 on the other stuff.

Definite deal on AMD 6 core processors, or is Dabs taking one on the chin?

KitGuru says: Evaluate each deal as you find it, regardless of components being offered or the store with the sale. If it suits your purpose and wallet, then it's a deal. Savings on things you don't need are not what we call economy. Just ask yourself if you're in the mood/market for an overclockable 6 core machine with Windows 7.

If you know of any other AMD processor deals right now that might back up this price drop, then please comment below or in the KitGuru forum.
