Back in 2018, Obsidian announced plans to bring its popular CRPGs, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2, to the Nintendo Switch. The first game has been available on the platform for a while already, but unfortunately, plans to bring the sequel over have now been cancelled.

Obsidian didn't handle the console ports for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire in-house. Instead, the studio teamed up with Paradox Arctic to develop the Xbox One, PS4 and Switch versions of the game. While the title did make its way to Xbox and PlayStation, the Switch release has now been cancelled.

Paradox Arctic studio, Versus Evil, was working on the port, but this week on the studio's community Discord server, the developers stated that after “much deliberation” the team has “decided not to move forward with Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire for the Nintendo Switch”.

As players pointed out on Reddit, Versus Evil didn't have the best reputation amongst Pillars fans on Switch, as the first game's port stopped receiving updates and was left in a buggy state. Obsidian itself has not commented on the cancellation at this time, but given how much time has passed since the game's initial release, a Switch version of the game is likely no longer worth the investment.

KitGuru Says: Based on current impressions of Pillars 1 on Switch, scrapping the sequel might be for the best, especially if some of those lingering performance problems can't be solved. At this point, Obsidian is done with Pillars of Eternity in CRPG form, but the lore and universe will carry forward into Obsidian's next major RPG, Avowed.

Just recently, Obsidian announced its next big RPG, ‘Avowed', which will launch on Xbox Series X and PC at some point in the future. With Obsidian putting its weight behind a first-person fantasy RPG, many have been wondering if Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity, is involved. As it turns out, Sawyer is directing a different unannounced project.

Obsidian appears to be hitting the ground running as part of the Xbox Game Studios family. Not only are we getting two story expansions for The Outer Worlds, Grounded and Avowed, but we'll also be getting a new game directed by Josh Sawyer:

This is exciting news, although needless to say, we don't know any other details at this point. Josh Sawyer was a huge part of Obsidian's comeback several years ago, when it crawled back from the brink of bankruptcy with Pillars of Eternity. Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire unfortunately didn't sell as well as the original game, so Sawyer may well be exploring a completely different idea at this point.

Whatever this game ends up being, we likely won't see it announced officially for quite some time.

KitGuru Says: Obsidian has always been a multi-project studio, so this isn't too surprising. Still it is awesome to hear that there is still more to come beyond Obsidian's currently announced slate of games.

Paradox Interactive had a good year in 2015, publishing two hit games on PC- Cities: Skylines and Pillars of Eternity. Two years on, both games are also heading to console.

Cities: Skylines came to the rescue for city-builder fans after the disastrous launch of EA’s SimCity and years later remains the go-to game for the genre. Tantalus Media assisted Paradox with the Xbox One port that hit shelves in April and will be involved in the PlayStation 4 release due on the 15th of August. The PS4 Edition comes with the After Dark expansion, that adds a day and night cycle as well as other features but will lack subsequent expansions like Snowfall. With consoles now having access to mods it’s possible we might see some of the vast library make its way over, but this remains to be seen as companies have had a hard time with console mods in the past.

Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition will release for both PS4 and Xbox One on 29th August, including The White March expansion packs as well as adjusted interfaces to work with consoles. This allows console players to experience the classic RPG before its sequel releases in 2018. Developers Obsidian has been drip-feeding information on Pillars of Eternity II since it was announced in January. The most recent information comes from an interview with Kotaku, showing the follow-up to let you run your own pirate ship complete with recruiting your own crew.

KitGuru Says: Both are brilliant games in each genre and well worth picking up if you haven’t before. I do wonder how well something like Pillars of Eternity will do on console though. Have any of you played Cities: Skylines or PoE yet?

Obsidian has made a name for itself by releasing excellent RPG games over the years. The studio's latest success was Pillars of Eternity and now, it is moving on to its new game titled ‘Tyranny', an RPG that focusses on a world where a clash between good and evil already took place, with evil emerging victorious.

The game's story will be non-linear and challenge players with morally unclear decisions. You will be playing the role of an officer in this evil empire, ruled by Kyros the Overlord.

Tyranny will be launching this year apparently, which is quite exciting. However, the announcement trailer doesn't really give away too much so we still don't know how the game is going to look or play. It could be a third/first-person open-world title, or it could be another isometric, text heavy game like Pillars of Eternity.

Much like Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny will be a PC exclusive game for the time being. It is also being made in collaboration with Paradox Interactive, who made Cities: Skylines and helped out with Pillars of Eternity.

KitGuru Says: While Tyranny sounds like a great concept, I'm not going to get too excited until I know what sort of game this is going to be. While Pillars of Eternity was great in many ways, I find it difficult to really get into isometric, text-heavy style games.

Obsidian Entertainment's crowd-funded classic RPG, Pillars of Eternity, got its first expansion earlier this year known as ‘The White March: Part 1'. That has been out for a little while now so those who played it are probably wondering when they'll be able to get their hands on Part 2. Fortunately, Obsidian now has a date in mind, revealing that The White March will conclude in January next year.

The exact date will be coming in a future update from the studio, though the date is currently expected to be a little later on in the month.

Other details are currently thin on the ground, though Obsidian has posted some details on two brand new enemy types for the expansion: Vithrack Brutes and Luminaries. Concept images were also put in to the announcement post over on the Pillars of Eternity forum.

KitGuru Says: Pillars of Eternity was very well received when it launched, though I do find it a bit difficult to get in to classic style RPGs myself. Have any of you played through Obsidian's latest adventure? Will you be grabbing the expansion?

Pillars of Eternity launched earlier this year to great praise from critics and fans alike. Obsidian hasn't been sitting around since launch though, it has been hard at work on the first expansion for the game, titled ‘The White March', which will release later this month.

The White March is a multi-part affair, so we are getting part 1 on the 25th of August, with part 2 set to come out at a later date.

Pillars of Eternity

The White March part 1 will raise the level cap, add in new multi-class abilities and bring new companions to the mix including a monk and rogue character. A new party-based AI system is also set to be introduced so over all, the expansion is set to bring quite a few changes to the old-school RPG.

The announcement trailer gives us some story details, going by what the narrator says, players will be breaching a fortress to find ‘the white forge'.

KitGuru Says: As someone who hasn't put a whole lot of time in to Pillars of Eternity, I'm not too sure if anything in the trailer ties in to the story from the base game. However, I do know some of our readers did play Pillars at launch. Have any of you beat Pillars of Eternity yet? Are you looking forward to the expansion?

Obisidian's upcoming crowd funded PC RPG, Pillars of Eternity, has been delayed for a few months so that the developer can incorporate beta feedback. The title was originally supposed to release by the end of this year, the new release window is ‘early 2015'.

Posting on the Pillars of Eternity forum, one of the developers wrote: “Through your help and feedback, the Pillars of Eternity team has spent the past two years creating a fun, fulfilling experience. An open development has enabled us to interact with our fans and backers in a way we weren't able to in the past, and this has really helped shape Eternity into a game that we all hoped it would become.”

The post then goes on to let people know that beta feedback was excellent and has given the developer a chance to make a better game. However, incorporating these changes/additions is bound to take time:

“To incorporate as much feedback as possible, polish every nook and cranny of the game, and make sure we don't ship a buggy game, Obsidian has decided to push the game's release into early next year. We are going to use the extra time to make Eternity shine for our backers, and a game that we were proud to call our own and would live up to your expectations.”

Pillars of Eternity has gone through a very open development cycle so backers will likely be happy to hear that Obsidian is pushing the release back a little bit  in order to incorporate feedback.

KitGuru Says: Since Pillars of Eternity is a crowd funded game, it makes perfect sense that the developer wants to appease its backers with the features and content that they want to see. The game is still slated for an early 2015 release, so it doesn't seem like it has been delayed for that long. Are any of you guys looking forward to Pillars of Eternity? Do you guys like Obsidian as a developer?
