Google has always been experimental with its marketing, from revealing phones prior to its announcement, to announcing a phone only by confirming that the unannounced phone’s purported cancellation was false. The search engine giant has now sent out an email to its fans saying “You're invited to Google's Birthday party.”

In an email to those subscribed to their mailing list, Google sent a cryptic message titled “You're invited to Google's Birthday party” to which they then continued to tease by saying “It’s our birthday, so we got you a present. Come back on 27/09/2021 to see what's in store. You never know what you might find.”

While very little can be gleaned from this teaser, the Google Store header does seem to suggest that this surprise is related to the search giant’s online shop, which will be hosting a 24 hour long sale on that day.

The international teaser has provided slightly more details, revealing that this ‘surprise’ is related to the upcoming Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, which will be releasing in mid-October.

As with many of Google’s events and announcements, this email will likely have ended up overhyping what is a simple bonus discount or a free Google Home mini with every order – or something similar. Still, surprises can be good, and so it is worth checking your emails on the 27th of September; Google’s generosity may surprise you.

Logitech has announced the release of a special, limited edition version of its popular G PRO Wireless Gaming Mouse. All profits Logitech makes from sales of the limited edition mouse will be donated to three charitable organisations.

The new limited edition mouse that Logitech has named “GHOST” is available now in the U.S, Canada and the UK, priced at $149.99. The “GHOST” is a special, white edition of the fan favourite Logitech G PRO Wireless Gaming Mouse. Apart from the change in colour, all the other specifications are the same as the original G PRO Wireless.

Logitech made the first batch of the “GHOST” available for sale on Friday 24th January in the U.S, Canada and the UK and at the moment, all the Logitech websites in those countries are showing the “GHOST” as sold out. The Google Pixel 4 was released recently, with one of its flagship features being the introduction of a high refresh rate 90Hz OLED panel, allowing for a buttery smooth user experience. It appears however that many users won’t get to experience it, as the 90Hz is only activated if the phone’s screen brightness is at 75% or higher, among other peculiar caveats.

Discovered on Reddit, Google’s aggressive fluctuating of the Pixel 4’s refresh rate can occur due to multiple different reasons: if the screen is below 75% brightness, if the ambient lighting conditions are unfavorable, if you’re watching a video, or if you activate battery saver mode. Some of these conditions make sense, while others seem somewhat arbitrary.

As the news began to spread, and users complained. Google responded, via The Verge, confirming that software updates will “roll out in the coming weeks that include enabling 90Hz in more brightness conditions”.

Until then, if you want to make sure that the 90Hz on your Pixel 4 is being utilised at all times, you can turn off auto-brightness and make sure the manual brightness remains above 75%.

Alternatively, you can head into the developer options, which contains a setting allowing you to force 90Hz at all times regardless of the situation. Both these workarounds will negatively impact the phone’s battery life, but for some, it’ll be worth it.

KitGuru says: What do you think about 90hz displays? Would a high refresh rate screen sway your purchasing decisions, or do you not see the difference and would rather not take the hit in battery life? Let us know down below.

Today we are taking a look at something a bit different- Moonlighter, an action RPG developed by the small team at Digital Sun. This game came out back in May but recently made its way to the Nintendo Switch, making now a perfect time to shine some light on it once again. Moonlighter is a cute and colourful game that reminds me of ‘The Binding of Isaac' with its dungeons. Meanwhile the economy system is similar to what you'll find in something like Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon, with the ability to interact with NPCs and upgrade the town.

The moment you load the game, you are hit by it's positively adorable pixel graphics. I've always had a soft spot for these types of games as to me, as the focus is less on high-end graphics and more on fun game mechanics. Beyond that, these kinds of games remove the need for a top notch gaming system and are easy to run.

The game recommends that you play with a controller but I wanted to try the keyboard anyway. Things started off well with ‘WASD' for the usual movement controls but binding keys like ‘J' and ‘K' for attacks was far less intuitive. Using ‘Z' and ‘C' to navigate the inventory was also a let down. I can see why they recommend a controller, as the game works like a charm with a gamepad in hand, making everything much easier to figure out.

In Moonlighter, you take on the role of ‘Will', a shopkeeper by day and a dungeon crawler by night. The aim of the game is to do what no other person has done before and figure out how to get into the 5th dungeon. You'll spend your nights looting and then during the day, you will be selling your goods to stock up on gold. You can use your leftover money and materials to upgrade the town to gain access to new NPCs, like a Blacksmith or an Enchanter. These new NPCs let you unlock new gear and upgrades. You can also spend money to upgrade your own shop.

Scouring through dungeons is kept fresh as each one is randomly generated, meaning you will always be presented with new challenges in each room. This also means that the dungeon layout is different and you'll be presented with different items, so you will need to keep your wits about you. However, each dungeon does have one thing in common, they are split into three separate levels and a BOSS level at the very end. Unfortunately, I never made it as far as the boss because I struggled to get past level 2 of the first dungeon. I found myself without the right gear upgrades and dying will cause you to lose everything in your inventory, forcing you to start from scratch.

When you do leave a dungeon and get on to selling your loot, you will need to be careful. If you price your items too high, customers will be angry with you and refuse to pay up. If you price too low, then you are missing out on profits to fund your next adventure. There is a book in your shop that tells you what is in high or low demand but it doesn't tell you how much each piece of loot is worth, so there is some guess work involved.

Once you do land on a good selling price for a specific item, the book will remember that and will relist it for you. In the early stages of the game though, you'll need to do plenty of adjusting to find the sweet spot and keep customers happy.

During the opening hours of the game, you are pretty much left to your own devices as you run through the kill/loot/sell/upgrade loop. This has left me wondering how the story progresses. I imagine it will pick up after finishing the first entire dungeon, or upon unlocking certain items but I haven't got that far just yet.

KitGuru Says: Moonlighter is a cute indie action RPG. You'll want to be using a controller as the keyboard controls are a bit odd but it seems like fun and is currently 25% off on Steam. Have any of you played Moonlighter at all?

With the disastrous launch of the Pixel 2 range of smartphones, it seemed that all of the hard work Google had done building its reputation in the handset world had been undone. In an impressive change of pace, however, it seems that the company has managed to double its sales, reaching 3.9 million throughout 2017.

The number was revealed by IDC research director Francisco Jeronimo, who notes that this is comprised of both first and second generation Pixel smartphones as well as their XL variants. Unfortunately, this continues to be a pebble in the ocean that is 1.5 billion devices in circulation, with Google’s yearly number scratching on the surface of just one week’s worth of iPhone sales.

While Google did literally double the numbers from 2016 to 2017, its first year netting 1.95 million sales encompassed just two-and-a-half-months. Still, this improvement means that Google is firmly headed in the right direction. It might struggle to regain the trust it lost due to an overwhelming amount of technical issues surrounding its Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones, but it has already made headway on fixing the majority of problems.

Comparatively, Google still has a rather strong foothold in the smartphone market when placed against the underwhelming Essential phone. Despite aiming to be an Android competitor, Android co-founder Andy Rubin’s new entry sold less than 90,000 units in its first 6 months.

Having acquired HTC’s smartphone design team for $1.1 billion, it is unlikely that Google has given up its Pixel brand just yet.

KitGuru Says: Despite seeming low in comparison to the bigger picture, this is an impressive feat considering Google was tasked with penetrating an over-saturated market. Having had such a good experience using my Pixel XL, I would like to see Google continue the brand and improve upon its shortcomings. Do you like Google’s Pixel smartphones or would you rather another brand?

Currently, Google is swamped with the chaos that is the launch of the Pixel 2 and its XL variant, with both handsets experiencing an excess of bugs and glitches. This hasn’t stopped the firm from looking ahead to next year’s line-up, with reports suggesting that the Pixel range will be expanded to three devices.

Prior to their release, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were codenamed Walleye and Taimen respectively, with each leaking before an official announcement came to light. Continuing this tradition, Droid Life reports to have uncovered four codenames linked to three upcoming devices.

‘Crosshatch’, ‘Albacore’ and ‘Blueline’ are the reported codenames for the devices, with Droid Life suggesting that the former, Crosshatch, is the current title for the Pixel 3. The other devices are expected to be premium and/or high-end handsets, perhaps penetrating different markets with the extra smartphone under its belt.

The fourth codename has been associated with “unified kernel for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL,” and is tentatively named ‘Wahoo’.

In the meantime, Google has to handle the PR disaster that the Pixel 2 launch has become, with users experiencing screen burn issues, sound problems resulting in odd ticks, clicks and whistles, and the poor design of the offset Pixel XL speakers.

Google is currently investigating these problems and will have to do more than the measly compensation of $10 worth of Play Store credit to win back the public it is rapidly losing. Worst case scenario will see Pixel and Pixel 2 devices being recalled, but Google has yet to announce such an action.

KitGuru Says: It’s such a shame, since the original Pixel device was debatably a hit. Does this drama impact on your temptation to purchase the potential Pixel 3 device next year?

On the eve of the Pixel 2’s release, Google handsets are reportedly experiencing a bug that is seemingly connected to the Android 8.0 update. Devices running Oreo, which is currently limited to Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, could be prone to errors in receiving text messages.

The problem was publicly brought to light by Gary Gregg on the Pixel Community forums, stating that “inbound texts have suddenly stopped arriving on [his] Pixel XL phone.” Elaborating on the problem further, it happened “About the time I upgraded to 8.0 (may not be related), on either Google Message or Verizon Message+, I can SEND texts, but I cannot RECEIVE texts on the phone,” explains Gregg. His troubleshooting didn’t stop there, either.

“Double checked to make sure no updates were pending. None. Uninstalled all apps installed before the problem arose. Restarted. Uninstalled Verizon Message+. Restarted. Disabled Google Messages. Restarted. Re-enabled Google Message, restarted. Downloaded Verizon Message+, restarted. At each step, no incoming texts received. When I launch Verizon Message+ after reinstall/restart and activate the account, the screen freezes on “Please Wait Starting Service.”

pixel-cw-1-e1475505143975.png

A number of people have commented on the thread saying that they are experiencing the same issue, with some reporting a factory reset solving the problem entirely. Google is aware that this is not a practical solution and is on the case, with community manager Orrin releasing an official statement.

“Thanks for all of the reports. The team is aware of this issue and working towards a fix,” explains Orrin. “Some of you have mentioned that rebooting or factory resetting the device resolved the issue. Definitely try to reboot, and if you do factory reset, make sure all of your data/info is backed up.”

As it is primarily Verizon users that have been affected, the network is similarly looking into a fix for the issue alongside the search giant. Of course, Google is going to want to fix the cause of this issue as soon as possible as its Pixel 2 handset releases on October 19th, whereas the Pixel 2 XL lands on November 15th.

KitGuru Says: As a Pixel user, operating on the UK network O2, I’ve not experienced any of these issues and have in fact been running Android 8.0 since it officially launched. Have you experienced any issues with your Pixel device?

It looks like Google is preparing some big changes to its mobile division going forward as reports this week claim that Google has managed to hire up an ex-Apple chip architect. The idea of Google producing its own hardware for future smartphones has been floating around for a while but with a chip development expert now in the ranks, it is closer than ever to reality.

Specifically, Google has hired Manu Gulati, a former Apple micro-architect, who worked on Apple chip development for close to eight years. According to Variety, he just switched to Google's team, with the new job title of lead SoC architect.

This is a new position for Google, which currently buys all of its SoCs from third-party companies, like Qualcomm or even Texas Instruments. This move appears to be paving the way for a shift in focus to develop new SoC designs for the Google Pixel. While Google may design the chips though, it will still need to pay a fabricator to make them, like Samsung or TSMC.

KitGuru Says: There has been talk of Google taking the ‘Apple approach' to making smartphones for some time now. However, this move is the biggest indicator so far that Google will begin designing more of its own hardware.

We have been hearing for a while that Google is working on ways to take back control of Android and take on Apple in a more direct way, with previous rumours even pointing towards Google making its own processors. This year, we may see Google take its biggest step to taking back control yet with reports pointing towards Google finally entering the hardware arena itself with a smartphone named ‘Pixel'.

A Google-branded smartphone would follow on from Google's recent efforts to oversee the creation of hardware, which is being built by Google's various partners. According to sources speaking with The Telegraph, the first Google smartphone will launch this year with the name ‘Pixel' and will allow the company to offer a more refined Android experience, similar to that of iOS on the iPhone, which Apple heavily optimises for its own hardware.

According to the report, this move will give Google more control over the “design, manufacturing and software” side of things. Unfortunately, that is where the new details end. Right now, we don't know what this means for the future of Nexus devices, but given all of the rumours surrounding a HTC-made Nexus coming out this year, Google might just be launching its new phone in addition to the Nexus line-up and not replace it entirely.

If Google is coming out with its own smartphone later this year, then it will likely launch with Android N, which is nearing completion at the moment but has yet to be given an official name.

KitGuru Says: It has often seemed like Google has been building up to this for a while. Nexus devices didn't really solve the Android fragmentation problem but if Google can offer its own custom hardware, with a specifically optimised version of Android then Google could give Apple a run for its money.

Google's in-house made Chrome OS laptop, the Chromebook Pixel 2, is coming to the UK this month. The new model was announced last month over in the US and is intended to get more developers on-board and working with the lesser used Chrome operating system.

Chromebooks are generally cheaper, intended for student use or someone who just needs a low-cost laptop. However, Google's flagship Chromebook Pixel is a bit more expensive sitting just under the £800 mark for the Intel Core i5 version and £1000 for the higher end Core i7 model.

The new Chromebook Pixel will also come with 8GB of RAM and a 32GB SSD, which can be upgraded to a 64GB SSD. The Chromebook Pixel is a WiFi only device so don't expect any 4G LTE connectivity. Here in the UK, the laptop will be stocked at a few retailers rather than on the Google Play Store.

The hope is that Google will be showing off its broad range of hardware at shops, including the Nexus smartphones, the Chromecast dongle, the new Chromebook Pixel along with Chrome OS laptops made by partners.

A while back, Google launched the Chromebook Pixel, a premium laptop designed to showcase Chrome OS with a really nice high-resolution display. The Chromebook Pixel is now two years old but apparently Google has a new model coming soon.

Apparently the upcoming device was confirmed on stage at the TeamWork 2015 Google partner event, by Renee Niemi, who is in charge of the Android and Chrome for Work and Education programs. According to a site called OMG Chrome, the presentation was available on YouTube before being taken down.

aair-800

The site transcribed part of the video, during which Niemi said: “We do have a new Pixel coming out and it will be coming out soon. We will be selling it but I just have to set your expectations: this is a development platform. This is really a proof of concept. We don’t make very many of these — we really don’t. And, our developers and our Googlers consume 85% of what we produce. But yes, we do have a new Pixel coming out.”

The Chromebook Pixel was likely never a consumer oriented device, indicated by the high price tag. However, this would mark the first time that Google actually acknowledged that fact, it will be interesting to see if that reflects in the marketing and reveal of the device.

FTL was a great, great game. Honestly, I put 50+ hours into that little indie roguelike. I even wrote thousands and thousands of words of extra content for a mod called Infinite Space. But that doesn't matter because I don't play that any more. What I do want to play is this simply beautiful looking pixel game in the same vein called Galactic Princess.

GP (as all the cool kids call it) is a real time space exploration title, with some lovely art work and a pretty nuanced looking 2D motion engine. It reminds me a lot of Gimbal in the way it controls, though this is more than just a dogfighting sim, it's got a whole universe to explore – or at least it will when it's complete.

The ships themselves are beyond customisable, they're literal do-it-yourself kits, meaning you can custom build your entire ship, making whatever crazy shape you can come up with. Be sensible with your engine placements though, as this game has real physics, so one at each end is just going to send you spinning in circles.

But the art style you guys. Just look at it.

It's…it's beautiful.

Described on the offiicial site as a Spaceship Survival Sandbox, Galactic Princess features customisable equipment, engines, generators, weapons, labs, control systems and even automated droids. Running these stations will be your crew, which are as varied as the equipment you can add to the ship. There's more than 13 different races, some of which are mechanical, others biological. As the site says, “will they join your crew as friends, or as slaves?”

Each of those crewmen can be equipped with a dizzying array of weapons as well, melee and ranged, with some combinations of both. Who else is excited about launching an army of droids into an enemy ship, armed with a full contingent of mantis hammers and samurai swords?

The story setting for the game looks very intriguing too:

Galactic Princess is currently just getting off the ground with its website and the like, but expect a Kickstarter soon.

KitGuru Says: God damn this is an exciting looking game. I've sworn off backing anything for a while, but I may have to get in on this one. If you want to support the project before the Kickstarter goes live, give them a donation or sign up for the forums. Better yet, tell your friends about it. I'm sure these guys will be after as much publicity as they can get.

Now that the Sony execs have done their UK tour, including Vodafone's head office in Newbury, it seems that more and more details of the up coming Apple/HTC name coupling ‘i1' are leaking out from our special sources close to the action. KitGuru polishes off another cup of tea and checks the leaves in HD.

As every KitGuru reader knows, we have a network of spy satellites in geo-stationary orbit above every technology company on the planet – ready to listen in and reveal secrets.

Oh. Wait. Sorry. We're PLANNING a series of…

In truth, we have a much less sophisticated network of moles around various industries – including the mighty telecommunications market and, right now, the top Sony folk are going door to door with a positive message about the new i1, which will launch at the end of August with a 61fps video camera capability – as reported earlier by KitGuru.

Why so much shoe leather and expense account expenditure?

Well, once again, Sony has managed to enter a market without sufficient ‘cool'.

Two years ago, it managed a respectable 5% market share, while last year saw that drop to just 4.8% – according to IDC.

So the Sony spend will be aimed squarely at one thing – creating a massive push behind the features of the i1 in August.

One of these features is the ‘transplant' of the latest Cybe-shot technologies from Sony's real cameras, into the 20 megapixel monster that will take pride of place on the i1.

Yep, that's right, you heard us. The Sony i1 will feature a 20 megapixel camera, which is aimed squarely at the market leading Nokia Lumia 920 snapper which presently heads up all of the image quality charts.

.
KitGuru says: Incredible the way that these cameras are improving – on paper. However, the current megapixel war in smartphones reminds us a lot of the ‘Watts War' that portable tape decks went through in the Eighties. At some fundamental level, unless the lenses get bigger and further away from bigger sensors, just how good can these snaps get?
