Apple's iPhone 5C didn't do too well, media speculation and ‘leaks' prior to its announcement all pointed towards it being a cheaper, plastic iPhone. Unfortunately, instead what we got was a fairly expensive plastic iPhone, at least that is how it was at launch. Things have settled down since then and it seems that Apple may be looking to try again with an iPhone 6C.

We have heard rumours of an iPhone 6C before, which were fuelled earlier this year when an image of a plastic-backed iPhone with Touch ID surfaced. Now, an analyst is claiming that the iPhone 6C will arrive mid 2016, ahead of the iPhone 7.

The analyst behind this prediction is Kevin Wang, who also claimed at one point that the iPhone 6C would be out this year, so this tip may not be all that reliable. However, it wouldn't be too surprising to hear that Apple is working on a new plastic iPhone.

The interesting thing here is the release timing. It is possible that Apple will launch an iPhone 6C to try to squeeze a bit more money out of the 6-series before moving on to the iPhone 7 in September, which will feature a new design along with the usual spec-bumps and additional features.

KitGuru Says: The iPhone 5C was a pretty big disappointment when it launched due to its high price point. It was only around £80 cheaper than the iPhone 5s at the time, so the value really didn't seem to be there. Maybe Apple will rectify that if it tries again with an iPhone 6C.

When Apple announced the iPhone 5C, it was met with resounding disappointment and weak sales. However, it looks like the company might be preparing to try again with an iPhone 6C, which will launch alongside the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.

Citing anonymous industry sources, DigiTimes reports that the iPhone 6C will sport a 4-inch screen, making it Apple’s smaller option for those who don’t necessarily want a 4.7 inch or 5.5 inch phone. The 6C will have its front side covered in Gorilla Glass and will make use of a LTPS display.

The iPhone 6C won’t be a weak phone though; it will apparently make use of the current iPhone 6’s A8 processor, along with other features like Touch ID and Apple Pay. The device is expected to launch in September, which would fit Apple’s usual iPhone release cycle.

For now, the iPhone 6C is rumour; this information did come from anonymous sources after all. However, Apple devices always seem to leak ahead of launch so if an iPhone 6C is on the way then we will end up hearing more over the coming months.

KitGuru Says: The high price tag thrown on to the iPhone 5C is really what put a lot of people off. However, once the price came down, particularly on-contract, the phone became much more popular. If Apple is planning an iPhone 6C, it will be interesting to see if it will make changes based on the reaction to the iPhone 5C.

Apparently Apple is set to pull the plug on its production of iPhone 5C handsets next year according to a new report. Foxconn and Wistron, the two companies currently manufacturing the devices, will begin slowing down production and eventually cease it entirely mid next year.

Apple announced the iPhone 5C just last year, using it to replace the iPhone 5. The 5C features a plastic colored back, rather than the all metal and glass design Apple usually goes for, it lacked the new Touch ID finger print sensor and utilized a slower CPU. Apple cut costs even further by introducing an 8GB version of the phone earlier this year.

There is currently no known specific reason for the halt in production but Apple does have a history of phasing out its lowest end devices eventually. Apple has previously admitted that sales of the 5C did not meet its expectations, which is likely down to the fact that all rumors suggested that it would launch at a much lower price point.

However, Apple has since clearly stated that it will never release a ‘cheap' iPhone and it never intended to do that with the 5C despite the pre-launch rumors.

KitGuru Says: The iPhone 5C was a bit of an experiment for Apple and it didn't really pay off. It will be interesting to see if they abandon the concept entirely next year or if it will introduce another plastic backed phone. What do you guys think? Was the 5C a bad idea? Did it need to be cheaper? Will Apple try releasing another plastic backed iPhone?

Leading up to the launch of the iPhone 5c, rumors were circulating that this would be Apple's first cheap alternative to the flagship iPhone. However, the plastic backed device turned out to still be fairly expensive and as a result, it didn't sell very well at all, at least at first.

Now Apple is confirming that it will never be releasing a budget class, cheap or mid-ranged iPhone. Speaking at Recode's mobile conference, Apple product marketing executive, Greg Joswiak explained why a more affordable iPhone isn't on the cards: “We were talking about some of the mistakes Apple made in the '90s, and some of it was trying to do things like making cheap products that were chasing market share instead of chasing a better experience.”

“You make that mistake once in your life, you're not going to make it happen twice”.

The iPhone 5c proves that Apple doesn't have any interest in a cheap iPhone, prior to its release, all rumors pointed to it being cheap so many were shocked when it released with a £450 price tag.

“Our goal is to make the best products with the best experience. We believe that if we make a better product and a better experience, there will always be a healthy market for that. And a healthy market doesn't mean we have to be market-share leader”.

While the iPhone 5c didn't meet Apple's expectations, high price tags certainly haven't hindered the company's success.

KitGuru Says: So there you have it, Apple has no plans to make a a more afforable iPhone, or any product by the sounds of it. Apple wants to be seen as a premium brand and won't be giving that up any time soon.
